Here are our “Hits” and “Misses” for week eleven, listing players you want to make sure are in your lineup, as well as those you might consider shelving for the week (or at least lowering your expectations!) This week I returned to my previous ways of leaving the most obvious players off the list (Drew Brees @ TB, Maurice Jones-Drew vs BUF,) so we’re left with players you may actually have to think about starting or benching this week. In most leagues the playoffs are rapidly approaching, so this could be a huge week for your team and hopefully some of our advice can help you clinch a spot! Anyways, here we go with the hits and misses…

Hits & Misses - Week 7: New England heads to Old England

Here are our “Hits” and “Misses” for week seven, listing players you want to make sure are in your lineup, as well as those you might consider shelving for the week (or at least lowering your expectations!) This week I’ve again tried to leave off the most obvious picks, such as Peyton Manning’s dream match-up against the Rams, so that the list only includes players you may have been scratching your head about starting this week. Also, not to get too far off topic, but the Patriots head to London this week to play the Buccaneers, which got me thinking…is the team name “New England Patriots” offensive to the British? I mean, they ARE the nation that we were being patriots against in the first place! With Roy Williams unlikely to play, Miles Austin will get the first start of his career. He’s a borderline WR3 this week (I’m actually giving him a shot in one of my leagues where I’m thin at WR due to byes), but his performance could have long-term fantasy implications if he plays well and gives Wade Phillips a reason to give him additional playing time in the future. He’s definitely a player to watch this week.

Last minute hits and misses heading into your draft

If your league hasn’t had it’s draft yet (such as the two Matt and I are in), I felt it necessary to share my last minute thoughts on some key players at each position. I’ve created two teams, The Hits and The Misses, that include players you should target or avoid in your league’s draft. Keep in mind that I’ve intentionally left out some of the most obvious guys and focused on the players that you might not have thought about as much.
The Hits
QB: Aaron Rodgers, Packers – Rodgers quietly had one of the best years of any fantasy quarterback last season, throwing for over 4,000 yards and 28 touchdowns. The offense returns intact (and a bit healthier overall) and should allow Aaron to put up even better numbers this year. In many leagues, he’s being drafted after Peyton Manning, Philip Rivers and Kurt Warner, but when all is said and done, he could have better numbers than all three of them. (More …)

Wide receiver Roy Williams traded to Cowboys

After proclaiming that wide receiver Roy Williams was not on the trading block for the past few weeks, it appears that the Detroit Lions have given in and completed a trade that will send Williams to Dallas for a first, third and sixth round draft pick.
This would have pretty huge news in the fantasy football world if it weren’t for the fact that star quarterback Tony Romo will miss upwards of a month with a broken finger. Instead of having Jon Kitna or Dan Orlovsky throwing Williams the ball, you’ll now have 40 year old Brad Johnson flinging it his way. I honestly can’t see all that much of an improvement in his stats until Romo returns. (More …)

Studs and Duds - Week 5: Don't pass on the Lions

Well after a good set of predictions for week two, maybe I should have taken another week off before putting up my next Studs/Duds post. In week four I ended up with only a 9-6-7 (correct-incorrect-push) record as the non-existent Jacksonville rushing attack and Selvin Young did their best to sabotage me. David Garrard’s solid day didn’t help either, but luckily a huge day from Greg Jennings and a good game from Earnest Graham helped me stay above water. As always, I’m hoping to do much better this week, so here you go with your “studs” and “duds” for week five:
Studs
- Jon Kitna, QB, DET: Coming into this season, I had big hopes for Jon Kitna and his dynamic receiving duo, Roy Williams and Calvin Johnson. However, the first few games didn’t quite live up to my expectations. Luckily the team had a bye week to think about their game play and I expect to see them come out in a big way at home against a Chicago Bears defense that is allowing nearly 250 passing yards a game. A touchdown to each of his favorite targets and 275 yards doesn’t seem out of reach.

Ask the Geeks - Week 5

Here are our responses to the first couple of questions for the week. Remember, you can always ask us questions by clicking the Ask the Geeks logo on the left sidebar (or this link).Jeff asks: I am in a league where QB TDs count as 6 points. My current QBs are Garrard, Bulger and Griese. I have been offered Aaron Rodgers and Jacksonville DEF for my Tennessee DEF. Should I make the trade?
Brandon’s take: Jeff, I’m not all that high on your quarterbacks right now and having Rodgers in there (assuming he’s healthy) would be a pretty decent upgrade. However, I just took a look at my league and the difference in fantasy points between the Titans and Jags is pretty staggering. Tennessee leads the NFL with 66 fantasy points through four weeks, while Jacksonville only has 23…a difference of 43 points (over 10 a week!) Looking at the schedules of both “players” (Rodgers/Titans), the Titans seem to have the easier road ahead. I also think David Garrard will rebound from a rough first couple games (he did alright last week) and should hold down your quarterback position. In short, don’t make the trade. Keep the Titans and have faith in Garrard.
Matt’s take: What are you doing with Bulger still on your roster? I don’t think Rodgers is necessarily a huge upgrade from Garrard, especially since Garrard’s numbers will only improve as his o-line slowly returns to health. (More …)

Notes from last night's preseason games

I realize that it’s only the first week of the preseason and teams are still trying to figure out what their opening day rosters are going to look like, but there are already some interesting things taking place that you might want to be aware of.
- Ravens 16, Patriots 15: Obviously the score to this game means absolutely nothing, with Tom Brady, Randy Moss, Wes Welker and Willis McGahee not seeing the field. However, what was interesting was the stat lines for the Patriots running backs, Laurence Maroney (6 rushes for 6 yards) and LaMont Jordan (19 rushes for 76 yards and TD). While Maroney had limited playing time against some starters and Jordan most likely played against second and third stringers, I’m still starting to doubt that Maroney should be drafted as high as we have him on our power rankings. If Jordan runs well throughout the preseason, I expect to see a pretty even split of carries at the tailback position in New England this year, but of course it’s only one game and maybe I’m getting ahead of myself, but maybe I’m not… (More …)
