Throughout most of his NFL career, I wouldn’t have cared a whole lot whether Reggie Bush played or not. However, now that I actually have him on my best fantasy football squad AND because he’s actually putting up decent numbers these days, I’m very nervous about the thought of him not occupying the W/R spot on my roster this weekend. It’s looking more and more like it’s heading that way too, with Reggie nursing a knee bruise. Not helping the situation is the fact that the Saints are undefeated and have no need to risk injuring one of their most dynamic players any further. Keep an eye on this situation until he’s ruled out for sure, but with such an enticing match-up against Tampa Bay, I won’t be happy if he takes the week off.

Reggie Bush out this Sunday?
Brandon

Brandon
Just a few thoughts off the top of my head based on the performance of my fantasy teams (and those that were against me)…
- Drew Brees is ridiculous. This was one of those match-ups that seemed too good (or bad, if you were playing against him like I was) to be true, but in the end somehow Brees played even better than expected and pretty much won the week for a team that had him playing.
- With Pierre Thomas out, Reggie Bush ran the ball just seven times. What?
- After his awful first half performance, Jay Cutler looked 200% better in the second half (besides that last interception!) I was regretting having drafted him for most of the game, but I was able to sleep a bit better after he at least threw one touchdown pass.
- Devin Hester and Earl Bennett should have solid seasons with Cutler…but what happened to Greg Olsen?!
- Felix Jones underwhelmed in the first game of the season.
- Carson Palmer couldn’t throw a touchdown pass against the Broncos?
- Is Julius Jones that good? Or is St. Louis that bad?
- Jake Delhomme is making my Steve Smith draft pick look pretty scary right now.
- While the Jets defense looks solid, the Eagles defense went crazy. (In one of my leagues, my opponent had Philly DEF, Drew Brees and Julius Jones. I lost.)
- Randy Moss needs to go HUGE tonight so the Patriots can beat T.O. and the Bills…and I can pull off the win in my other league!

Brandon
Finally we’ve reached that day you’ve all been waiting for…the first Sunday of the 2009-10 NFL season. Good luck to everyone! Before game time though, I wanted to share a few last minute notes that may affect your team…
- For all of you who took a chance on Cleveland backup running back James Davis, you might have to wait another week to see what you really drafted. He is listed as questionable for today’s game after suffering a minor head injury (in which he was briefly hospitalized) in a car accident yesterday. Keep him on your bench until he proves that he’s the real deal (and healthy.)
- I was one of the people who were under the impression that Reggie Bush was fully healthy and ready to roll this week, but apparently that might not be the case. Scout.com is reporting that he might not be fully healthy and that it’ll be backup Mike Bell who will get the majority of the carries, although Bush should still get around 15 touches. I’m still starting Reggie in my PPR league, as I think he’ll still be used in the passing game, but I’m hoping this news is bogus and he rips off some big runs today.

Hits & Misses - Week 1: Let the games begin!
Brandon
With tomorrow already being opening day of the 2009-10 NFL season, it’s time for the first Hits & Misses post of the year. I’m trying a new table-based formatting this year, which should make it a little easier to distinguish between players at each position, so let me know what you think. With the Hit list, I usually try to pick players that aren’t the most obvious, so you’ll rarely see a player with the name Adrian Peterson, Randy Moss, or Tom Brady (although I did include Drew Brees this week!) For the Misses list I try to include only players that are fantasy relevant, so while it’s probably a given that a fourth string receiver on the Raiders will have a bad day, you won’t see his name on the list. Anyways, let’s get to the good stuff… (More …)

Ask the Geeks: Countdown to Opening Day
Brandon
With opening day rapidly approaching, it’s high time for some more Ask the Geeks. Send us your burning questions here.
Brian asks: Hey Geeks, I have two flex positions to fill with six choices and am stuck. 12 man league and we get individual return yards keep in mind. Players are Ryan Grant, Santonio Holmes, Felix Jones, Willie Parker, Joseph Addai and X-factor Stefan Logan who is doing punt and kickoff returns for Pitt. Which two do you recommend?

Brandon
- Hopefully managers who drafted Pierre Thomas to be one of their starting running backs had a Plan B for at least week one, as he now has a laceration that required stitches in addition to the knee injury that he’s been suffering from for the past few weeks. Even if he plays, it might not be at the level you are expecting from one of your top draft picks. If he doesn’t play, expect a lot more work for backup Mike Bell and Reggie Bush.
- While the running back committee in Tampa Bay is sure to cause headaches for fantasy team managers all season, the latest update is that Cadillac Williams, not Derrick Ward, has been named the team’s starter. Pretty amazing stuff considering the injury he is returning from, but apparently they will still rotate all three running backs (Earnest Graham being the other) all season, so good guess on who to start if you have one of these guys on your team.

Matt
Could things be lined up any more perfectly for Drew Brees to have a season for the history books? Colston’s 100% healthy and looking great in camp. Bush is healthy (false alarm on the knee). Shockey doesn’t have any nagging injuries for what seems like the first time in years, and could be a sleeper now that everyone’s finally given up on him.
After a season in which Brees racked up over 5,000 passing yards despite injuries to Bush and Colston, it’s hard to be any more bullish on him. He’s the only fantasy QB without any notable caveats. Brandon might put him at #2, but my lack of a Brady man-crush enables me to see the world as it truly is; thus, for me he’s on his own in Tier 1, with Manning and Brady below him in Tier 2.

Week 14 Wrap-Up: Reggie Bush is back
Brandon
With the playoffs in action in many of the fantasy leagues out there, let’s just jump into the action that took place this weekend, starting with the Saints and their resurgent ground game…
- New Orleans 29, Atlanta 25: This is supposed to be the year that the Falcons win the division (after ending up in last place last season), but with a loss to the Saints, they now find themselves in third place and will be two games behind whoever wins tonight’s game between the Panthers and Buccaneers. For Atlanta, Roddy White put up another big effort with 10 receptions for 164 yards, but it wasn’t enough to counter the Saints dominant passing rushing game (?) Pierre Thomas broke the century mark and scored two touchdowns, while Reggie Bush (106 combined yards, TD) seems to be back in action, which can only mean good things for the Saints. (More …)

Top 25 fantasy football players after nine weeks
Brandon
It’s been nine weeks since the season started, and three since my last posting of the top 25 fantasy football players in the game. As I mentioned last time, this list is based on a non-PPR league that Matt and I are in, which follows pretty standard scoring rules. At this point, most teams have had their bye, so the stats paint a pretty accurate picture of the players effectiveness this season.
Note: The number in parenthesis is the ranking of the player after week 6.
1 (1). Philip Rivers, QB, SD: It’s pretty amazing, but at the three, six and now the nine week mark, Rivers is STILL the top fantasy football player in the league.
2 (7). Clinton Portis, RB, WAS: Portis has been solid all season long and now that all the aberations are starting to fall off the list, the greats are shining through.
3 (6). Kurt Warner, QB, ARI: Warner keeps getting it done and now that receiver Anquan Boldin is back and in action, Warner shouldn’t stray too far from the top of this list.
4 (2). Drew Brees, QB, NO: The bye week dropped him down a few spots, but he’ll stay at the top of the list for the duration.
5 (3). Aaron Rodgers, QB, GB: Rodgers continues to prove that Green Bay made the right decision in letting Favre go. (More …) -
Ask the Geeks - Week 8
Brandon
Here are our responses to the first couple of questions for the week. Remember, you can always ask us questions by clicking the Ask the Geeks logo on the left sidebar (or this link).Alan asks: Receiving Steve Slaton and Anquan Boldin for Bernard Berrian and Ryan Grant. Yay or nay, fantasy geeks.
Brandon’s take: Alan, at first glance, it appears you would be getting the better of this trade. In terms of fantasy point average per game, right now Steve Slaton (11*) and Anquan Boldin (16.6) are a good deal ahead of Ryan Grant (7.5) and Bernard Berrian (11.6). However, looking at their schedules for the remainder of the season, Grant and Berrian actually have the easier path to the playoffs. Their schedules, coupled with A) the fear that Steve Slaton could hit the infamous “rookie wall”, B) the question of how effective Boldin will be when coming back from his pretty serious injury a couple weeks ago, and C) the fact that Cardinals wide receiver Steve Breaston has played well in relief of Boldin, leads me to recommend you do NOT make the trade. Last season Ryan Grant came on strong towards the middle of the season and I expect the same to happen this year. I also think the Frerotte-to-Berrian connection in Minnesota should hold up for the rest of the season and pay you solid dividends. Good luck…hopefully this helps!

Top 25 fantasy football players after six weeks
Brandon
Well, it’s been six weeks since the season started, and three since my last posting of the top 25 fantasy football players in the game. As I mentioned last time, this list is based on a non-PPR league that Matt and I are in, which follows pretty standard scoring rules. You’ll want to keep in mind that only about half the teams have had their bye week so far, so some of the numbers might be slightly askew, but it still gives a pretty decent representation of the production levels of the players mentioned.
Note: The number in parenthesis is the ranking of the player after week 3. An asterisk means the player has already had their bye week.
1 (1). Philip Rivers, QB, SD: Rivers is still the number one fantasy player in the league and you have to give him props considering the receiving corps he’s throwing to.
2 (9). Drew Brees, QB, NO: Drew takes a pretty good leap forward since week three and he should only get better once he gets Marques Colston and Jeremy Shockey back.
3 (5). Aaron Rodgers, QB, GB: Brett who? Rodgers has been all that Green Bay could ask for in a Favre replacement…but it’d be nice to see the stats translate into something better than a 3-3 record.
4 (2). Jay Cutler, QB, DEN: He’s fallen off a bit in the past few weeks, but a big showing against a weak New England defense could work wonders for him.
5 (18). Tony Romo, QB, DAL: Romo tore the list up the past few weeks, moving 13 spots in the rankings. However, a broken finger that sidelines him for upwards of a month could be enough to take him off the list completely…but maybe he’ll play through the pain. (More …) -
Sell High, Buy Low: Trade ideas for Week 5 2008
Matt
Last week I advised you to sell high on Reggie Bush, Chris Chambers and Ronnie Brown while you still could. The jury’s out on Ronnie Brown since he was on a bye, but I’m going to pull an “I told you so” on Bush (38 total yards, 0 TD, and Deuce is back in action) and Chambers (2 catches, 45 yards, 0 TD).I suggested that you buy low on Ocho Cinco; little did I suspect that Carson Palmer’s injury would turn out to be worse than everyone thought. As long as Palmer’s OK (looks like he is), I still think the OC will be putting up AOK numbers very soon, and could return to elite status by the second half. I advised trading for Ryan Grant, who had another rough game, but I still think he’ll be fine. And Brandon Jacobs had a bye week.
Here are the players I recommend wheeling and dealing this week:
Sell High
Kurt Warner - When does a 472-yard, two-touchdown game spark a debate among fans and commentators over whether you should be benched? When you also throw three interceptions and fumble the ball four times. Warner is the sixth-best QB in the league from a purely statistical perspective, but his shaky play against the Jets has to have the coaches wondering whether they made the right call in benching Leinart. Any trade you offer will look impressive – Warner’s gleaming fantasy numbers are sure to make any owner at least think about it, especially if they’re desperate for QB help. But I’ve got my doubts as to whether Warner will be keeping his job for much longer, so I’d unload him while you still can. The key here is finding an owner who needs a QB so badly that he or she is willing to take the risk that Warner gets benched. (More …)

Sell high, buy low: Trade ideas for week 4 2008
Matt
What’d I tell you about Carson Palmer? He might have only thrown one TD pass, but 286 yards and a 98.9 QB rating against the Giants defense should tell you that the reports of his demise were exaggerated indeed. Just wait to see what he does this week with Cleveland in town. If you were in need of QB help last week, I hope you listened to me and did your best to wrench him away from his dejected owner. Now that we’ve all learned an important lesson (I am infallible and questioning me puts you at risk of looking as silly as the dissenters in last week’s Sell High, Buy Low comments section), we’re on to this week’s trade ideas:
Sell High
Reggie Bush, RB, Saints – He’s a must-start for now and – as long as he stays healthy – should continue to be a top fantasy rusher. But Deuce McAllister’s healthy again, and coach Payton says “his time is coming.” With the Saints struggling to run the ball (most of Bush’s production has come in the passing game), count on Payton to dramatically increase Deuce’s workload in the weeks to come, which will cut down on the number of plays that Bush is involved in. As far as fantasy football value is concerned, Bush will likely go back to being more of an RB2 than an RB1. If you’re a Bush owner, find the member of your league who’s most likely to be enamored with Bush’s famous name and thus-far stellar production and see if you can swap him for a feature back like Joseph Addai, Marshawn Lynch, or Clinton Portis. Top 25 fantasy football players after three weeks
Brandon
Now that the first three weeks of the NFL season are in the books and starting the official bye weeks, I figured it might be interesting to take a look at the top 25 players (based on the scoring system for one of the leagues that Matt and I are in – non-PPR) and see if there were any surprises in the mix…of which there were a few. Keep in mind that it’s only been three weeks, but it’s interesting to note that potential first round picks LaDainian Tomlinson, Steven Jackson, Randy Moss, Peyton Manning, and Tom Brady (a little different situation for Brady than for the others though) are no where to be found…
1. Philip Rivers, QB, SD – First of two young quarterbacks leading the league so far…
2. Jay Cutler, QB, DEN – …and the second. And to think, Cutler is here after missing his top receiving option for the first game. Expect to see these two quarterbacks on this list for a while.
3. Michael Turner, RB, ATL – Turner has been all that you could ever have hoped for through the first three games. While he probably won’t finish this high, I wouldn’t be surprised to see him in the top 15 at the end of the season.
4. Marion Barber, RB, DAL – The Barbarion is living up to his first round draft pick status.
5. Aaron Rodgers, QB, GB – Bet you didn’t expect to see Rodgers this high on the list, huh? (More …)
