With the playoffs rapidly approaching (only one week of the regular season left in my two main leagues,) many teams out there are probably in a “must win” situation this week. Hits & Misses - Week 10: Thursday Night Football Edition

This week the talent is really starting to fall off the cliff, with the only real interesting additions to the list being Texans’ running back Ryan Moats and Chargers’ receiver Malcom Floyd…but even they don’t raise all that much excitement. Anyways, here’s the guys that are still available out there in case you’re in desperate need of help at a position. Hopefully you don’t have to rely on these guys too much!

Tight end rankings for 2009

Here are my tight end rankings for this season. You can check out the other cheat sheets here.
- Jason Witten, DAL – With T.O. distractions out of the way, the Romo-to-Witten connection should be better than ever.
- Antonio Gates, SD – Looking for Gates to rebound from a season where he was hampered by injuries throughout and regain his spot near the top of this list.
- Tony Gonzalez, ATL – It’s hard to tell how Gonzo will do in Hot-lanta, but he gives Ryan a great new target and I can only see things going at least as well as they did in Kansas City for the veteran.
- Dallas Clark, IND – With Marvin Harrison leaving town, expect Peyton Manning to look Clark’s way a lot this season.
- Greg Olsen, CHI – Jay Cutler likes throwing to the tight end and he might have already found a new best friend in Olsen, especially given the weakness at the wide receiver position in Chicago.
- Chris Cooley, WAS – Hopefully they look to him in the end zone a bit more than they did last year when he only had ONE touchdown!
- Kellen Winslow, TB – He’s a “soldier” when he IS playing, but he’s got a new team with quarterback questions and there are always injury concerns. I’m optimistic though that the Bucs will make good use of him.
- Kevin Boss, NYG – With no Plaxico Burress in the picture, hopefully Eli can make better use out of Boss this year. He did have six touchdowns in only his second season, so that’s promising.
- Owen Daniels, HOU – Only two touchdowns last year, but racks up solid yardage.
- Zach Miller, OAK – Needs to become more of a red-zone factor.

As we head into the playoffs, there’s a pretty good chance that your team is already set and you are not in need of any desperation picks. Just in case though, here’s a look at the players to target on your league’s waiver wire this week. This list is ordered by the percentage of ESPN leagues in which the player is available, but even if you’re not a ESPN user, it’s a decent indication of how likely you are to find the player on waivers in your league. We also note here how strongly we feel about this pickup with three categories: Instant Starter, Grab ‘n’ Stash, or Desperation Pickup.
Domenik Hixon, WR, Giants (7.0% owned, Desperation Pickup) – With Plaxico’s accidental gun shot wound, combined with his legal troubles now, I think it’s safe to write him off for at least the fantasy football playoffs. His backups are seeing immediate dividends, including Domenik Hixon, who has caught 11 balls for nearly 130 yards over the past two games.
Devone Bess, WR, Dolphins (7.1% owned, Desperation Pickup) – With starter Greg Camarillo out for the season, it’s been Bess who is filling in for him and he has done pretty well lately. Over the past two games he, like Hixon above, has 11 catches, with his going for over 170 yards.
Mark Clayton, WR, Ravens (7.8% owned, Desperation Pickup) – More so than Davone Bess or Domenik Hixon above, Clayton has been a wild man the past two games, turning just seven receptions into 240 yards and two touchdowns. While you shouldn’t expect this kind of production each week, he could be worth a chance if you need some big time luck to win you a playoff game. (More …)

Here’s a look at the players to target on your league’s waiver wire this week. This list is ordered by the percentage of ESPN leagues in which the player is available, but even if you’re not a ESPN user, it’s a decent indication of how likely you are to find the player on waivers in your league. We also note here how strongly we feel about this pickup with three categories: Instant Starter, Grab ‘n’ Stash, or Desperation Pickup.
J.J. Arrington, RB, Cardinals (11.6% owned, Grab ‘n’ Stash) – Tim Hightower still has a hold on the “starter” designation, as well as the goal-line carries, but with the team passing the ball so much and Hightower running so ineffectively, it’s Arrington who could have the most value heading into the playoffs. If you’re a Hightower owner, you want Arrington on your roster for sure insurance if anything.
Maurice Morris, RB, Seahawks (15.7% owned, Desperation Pickup) – He had a big game on Sunday, but with a short week ahead it could be Julius Jones that gets the bulk of the carries. You should not be relying on a player like Morris to get you into the playoffs, but maybe you are… (More …)

J.J. Arrington, RB, Cardinals (1.8% owned, Grab ‘n’ Stash) – Rookie Tim Hightower just hasn’t gotten it done the past two weeks and we’re starting to wonder if he’s really starter-material. With Kurt Warner opening the field up dramatically with the passing game, Hightower should have all the room in the world to run the ball, but the numbers just aren’t there. On Sunday, J.J. Arrington was able to weasel some carries from Hightower (including a touchdown) and did fairly well with them. If Hightower continues to struggle, look for Arrington’s carries to increase steadily.
Deion Branch, WR, Seahawks (9.2% owned, Grab ‘n’ Stash) – Branch finally played another game this season…and survived! He ended up the game with over 50 yards and as he gets more playing time, he should get more comfortable in the offense and put up decent numbers down the home stretch. He’s probably not worth starting right away, but you might pick him up and hide him on your roster to see what he can do. (More …)

Mark Bradley, WR, Chiefs (2.4% owned, Desperation Pickup) – Over the past three games Bradley has really developed some good chemistry with quarterback Tyler Thigpen (see below) to the tune of 18 receptions for nearly 190 yards and two scores. While you probably don’t want him starting for your team come playoffs time, he makes a decent injury fill-in until that point.
Tatum Bell, RB, Broncos (7.0% owned, Desperation Pickup) – With the team running out of options at tailback, the Broncos have signed Bell and with the injury to Selvin Young, he could see touches immediately. I still don’t like the Broncos running game though and wouldn’t recommend you use anyone wearing orange/blue/white in your RB1 or RB2 position at this point, but if you’re REALLY desperate… (More …)

Power rankings updated: Look at all the pretty colors

The FFGeekBlog power rankings have again been adjusted to reflect the current state of the NFL; however, I have to apologize that I didn’t have the new tier color-coding set up earlier in the preseason. Hopefully they can still be helpful for a few of your drafts (I know at least one person to whom it will be helpful to!) If you head over to our power rankings page and check them out, you can see that all of the lists have been broken down into logical tiers that players can be grouped into, showing where drop offs in value are at each position.
Some of the players on the move in the latest round of updates include Jon Kitna, Michael Turner, Jonathan Stewart, Rashard Mendenhall, Chad Johnson, Robert Meachem, Dustin Keller and the New York Giants defense.

Best of the Rest: Leinart back in the doghouse

Continuing my previous article “Rising and Falling: The Barbarian Unleashed!”, here is a list of some of the players who saw the field over the weekend and how their play may or may not have affected their draft status…
Falling
Matt Leinart (QB-ARI): 4 of 12 for 24 yards, 3 INT - ESPN is reporting that Kurt Warner will be named the starter for Arizona on opening day after Leinart had another poor outing in preseason. Completing 25% of your passes and nearly having as many interceptions as completions is not the way to earn the coach’s trust. On the plus side, maybe Leinart can spend more time partying with all his celebrity friends now, while Warner studies game tape. At this point, Leinart should be no where near one of your cheat sheets going into draft day. (More …)
