As I mentioned in an earlier post, make sure to check your rosters before the game tonight so that you don’t get screwed with a starter on your bench (or even worse if there are leagues out there that lock rosters after the first game of the week starts!) Anyways, I wanted to get this post out with time to spare before game-time tonight in case any of the 49ers or Bears players made the list. Here are our “Hits” and “Misses” for week ten, listing players you want to make sure are in your lineup, as well as those you might consider shelving for the week (or at least lowering your expectations!) Hits & Misses - Week 8: Happy Halloween!
Brandon
With Halloween right around the corner, hopefully your fantasy teams are in for more treats than tricks! While there is no game on Sunday night due to the World Series, I’m excited for the treat we’ll all get on Monday night when we actually get to see a good football game (Falcons @ Saints), instead of what we were forced to witness last week. Make sure to set your rosters early on Saturday so that you don’t forget while you’re nursing that post-party hangover on Sunday!Anyways, here are our “Hits” and “Misses” for week eight, listing players you want to make sure are in your lineup, as well as those you might consider shelving for the week (or at least lowering your expectations!) We start it off with a few big name running backs that you may be concerned about… (More …)

Hits & Misses - Week 6: Brady Back in Business
Brandon
Here are our “Hits” and “Misses” for week six, listing players you want to make sure are in your lineup, as well as those you might consider shelving for the week (or at least lowering your expectations!) Normally I would leave off the most obvious picks, such as Tom Brady against the Titans. However, the Patriots passing game hasn’t lived up to it’s billing so far this year and there are managers who are probably considering benching this week, so I’ve included him as a reminder to get him in your line-ups! Anyways, here we go with the hits and misses for the week… (More …)

Hits & Misses - Week 4: Cutler to the Rescue!
Brandon
Here are our “Hits” and “Misses” for week four, listing players you want to make sure are in your lineup, as well as those you might consider shelving for the week (or at least lowering your expectations!) This week I didn’t even have to worry about skipping the most obvious choices, as most of the top ranked players have some pretty tough match-ups (Brees/Colston vs Jets, MJD vs Titans, Brady vs Ravens, Purple Jesus vs Packers, etc), so here is your unfiltered hits and misses for the week, starting with the Savior of Chicago… (More …)

Hits & Misses - Week 3: Bring out your Steve Smiths!
Brandon
Here are our “Hits” and “Misses” for week three, listing players who you want to make sure are in your lineup, as well as those who you might consider shelving for the week (or at least lowering your expectations!) As usual, I tried to keep the most obvious players off the list, such as Drew Brees against a Bills defense that is allowing over 330 yards per game through the air (make sure to have him in your lineup this week though.) Anyways, let’s get to the good stuff, starting with a pair of receivers who share a name… (More …)

Just a few thoughts off the top of my head based on the performance of my fantasy teams (and those that were against me)…
- Drew Brees is ridiculous. This was one of those match-ups that seemed too good (or bad, if you were playing against him like I was) to be true, but in the end somehow Brees played even better than expected and pretty much won the week for a team that had him playing.
- With Pierre Thomas out, Reggie Bush ran the ball just seven times. What?
- After his awful first half performance, Jay Cutler looked 200% better in the second half (besides that last interception!) I was regretting having drafted him for most of the game, but I was able to sleep a bit better after he at least threw one touchdown pass.
- Devin Hester and Earl Bennett should have solid seasons with Cutler…but what happened to Greg Olsen?!
- Felix Jones underwhelmed in the first game of the season.
- Carson Palmer couldn’t throw a touchdown pass against the Broncos?
- Is Julius Jones that good? Or is St. Louis that bad?
- Jake Delhomme is making my Steve Smith draft pick look pretty scary right now.
- While the Jets defense looks solid, the Eagles defense went crazy. (In one of my leagues, my opponent had Philly DEF, Drew Brees and Julius Jones. I lost.)
- Randy Moss needs to go HUGE tonight so the Patriots can beat T.O. and the Bills…and I can pull off the win in my other league!

Last minute hits and misses heading into your draft
Brandon
If your league hasn’t had it’s draft yet (such as the two Matt and I are in), I felt it necessary to share my last minute thoughts on some key players at each position. I’ve created two teams, The Hits and The Misses, that include players you should target or avoid in your league’s draft. Keep in mind that I’ve intentionally left out some of the most obvious guys and focused on the players that you might not have thought about as much.
The Hits
QB: Aaron Rodgers, Packers – Rodgers quietly had one of the best years of any fantasy quarterback last season, throwing for over 4,000 yards and 28 touchdowns. The offense returns intact (and a bit healthier overall) and should allow Aaron to put up even better numbers this year. In many leagues, he’s being drafted after Peyton Manning, Philip Rivers and Kurt Warner, but when all is said and done, he could have better numbers than all three of them. (More …)

Looks like the Jay Cutler and Devin Hester are already working well together and Matt Snyder from Fanhouse writes:
“You’ll still be able to get Hester as a WR3 in the majority of fantasy leagues, and it’s looking like he’ll be an absolute steal.”
I agree with Snyder and will definitely be targeting Hester in my draft this year, as I have a lot of faith that Cutler will get him the ball a lot. In the same article, Snyder writes about Darrius Heyward-Bey:
“(he) is already dealing with his second training camp injury. First, it was a tweaked hamstring, and now it’s a bum toe. Even if he exits camp healthy, he’s got fantasy bust written all over him for 2009. Teammates Chaz Schilens and Johnnie Lee Higgins are being drafted later but will both have better seasons.”
Seems he is pretty confident that Heyward-Bey will NOT be contributing to your fantasy team this year. While I’m not quite as pessimistic, it’s very hard to expect anything from Raiders receivers (besides TE Zach Miller) until we’ve seen that JaMarcus Russell has improved dramatically this preseason.

The Wire: Waiver Wire pickups for week 7, 2008
Brandon
Here’s a look at the players to target on your league’s waiver wire this week. This list is ordered by the percentage of ESPN leagues in which the player is available; even if you’re not a ESPN user, it’s a decent indication of how likely you are to find the player on waivers in your league. We also note here how strongly we feel about this pickup with three categories: Instant Starter, Grab ‘n’ Stash, or Desperation Pickup.
Brad Johnson, QB, Cowboys (0.5% owned, Instant Starter) – Adding injury to insult, it appears that Tony Romo will be out for up to four weeks with a broken finger that he suffered in the loss to the Cardinals on Sunday. Brad Johnson will start for Dallas while Romo is out and he climbs into the driver seat of a very nice ride…but he hasn’t started in over a year and is 40 years old. If you are a Romo owner, or are just desperate for a quarterback, Johnson could be your man in the short term.
Donnie Avery, WR, Rams (2.4% owned, Grab ‘n’ Stash) – Avery was the first wide receiver taken in the draft this year, but it took him a few weeks to get his first catch in the NFL. Since week four however, he’s racked up 10 catches for 119 yards. While Torry Holt gets double covered, it seems that Avery is starting to step up and make the best of his opportunities. Don’t start him right away, but in keeper leagues, or in a deep league where you can afford to use a bench spot on him, you might think about scooping up Donnie and hoping this offense can improve a bit over the course of the season. (Due to technical difficulties, only the names of the week 6 players are on the list now…and by technical difficulties I mean I deleted it by accident! Anyways, you should be looking at the week 7 waiver pick-ups now anyways.) (More …)

Late-round wide receiver sleepers
Brandon
After participating in a few drafts so far, I just wanted to list a few wide receivers that I’ve either drafted, or seen drafted in the last few rounds that could help your fantasy team this year (or in future years if you’re in a keeper league):
- Ted Ginn, Jr. (MIA): Should be the number one target for Chad Pennington in Miami, which means a lot more than it would have meant last season when the team was in complete disarray. Around 900 yards and five scores doesn’t seem out of the picture.
- DeSean Jackson (PHI): With number one receiver Kevin Curtis out for an extended period of time undergoing surgery for a sports hernia and number two receiver Reggie Brown already having hamstring issues, Jackson will be thrust into the action to start the season. He’s looked good in preseason and if that carries over to the regular season, expect quarterback Donovan McNabb to look his way all year long.
- Eddie Royal (DEN): Teammate Darrell Jackson was brought in to be the number two receiver alongside Brandon Marshall, but then the team drafted Royal, who has worked his way into a starting role this preseason. Expect Royal to put up some decent numbers in an offense that should be a lot better passing the ball this year, as Cutler will be a lot healthier after taming his diabetes and Marshall draws loads of attention from opposing defenses.
