Studs and Duds - Week 6: Cassel ready to break out?

After taking a sabbatical during week four, I got back on track last week and didn't fare too badly with my predictions. Although again my title pick didn't pan out all that great (the Detroit Lions passing game did NOT rebound after the bye week!), and my pick of Clinton Portis to have a rough go of it against the Eagles did not quite work out, big games from Matt Forte and Michael Turner, along with a weak performance (again!) by the Jacksonville running game led me to a pretty decent record for the week. As usual, I'll be looking to improve again this week, and who better to lead me there but my boy Matt Cassel of the Patriots. So without further ado, here are your studs and duds for week 6...

Ask the Geeks - Week 4

Atg ButtonWell it's week four and many of you are probably feeling the effect of poor planning when you took three starters that all had the same bye week (don't worry...you're not alone!) Anyways, hopefully we can offer you some advice to get you past the bye week blues and maintain your first place spot in the standings...

Sunday Wrap-up: Brandon Marshall is back!

While the Bronco's should definitely have lost their game with the Chargers (I have no clue what the officials where thinking when they blew that ball dead!), the most important thing to take away from the game for all of us non-Broncos/Chargers fans is that Brandon Marshall is back...and he's very pissed at anyone who discounted him in their league's draft. Marshall finished the game with the second most receptions for a game in NFL history with 18 (two shy of T.O.'s record of 20) and racked up 166 yards and a touchdown in the process. If you were in a PPR league that awards bonus points for breaking the 100 yard or 150 yard mark...and you had Marshall in your starting roster...you are very, very happy right now. Anyways, here are some other notes from the games this past weekend that you may find interesting...

Studs and Duds - Week 2: Ryan Grant ready to roll!

After all the dust has settled and the injury count has been tallied (bye bye Brady, Burleson, Alex Smith and for a little while, Colston), it's time to recount my predictions for the previous weekend and give you a few more for week two of the season. According to my slightly-biased count, I finished last week 13-7-6, which isn't all that bad I guess. Some of my better picks included Thomas Jones, who re-assumed his spot in fantasy football relevance with a strong showing against the Dolphins and Chris Perry, who did very little with his first chance to shine as the Bengals new starting running back, as expected. On the flip-side, I did miss a few picks, including Ricky Williams, who returned to his role as a deadbeat (in fantasy production that is) against the Jets, while Brandon "The Bruiser" Jacobs taught me (and LaRon Landry) never to doubt him again. Anyways, it's time for your week two studs and duds, so hopefully I can provide a little insight that can help your team this upcoming weekend...

Giants pound the Browns, 37-34

Alright, so maybe the score doesn't show that the Giants pounded the Browns, but if you watched the first quarter and a half, it was definitely a lopsided match. With all the "starters" in (I use the term loosely because the Giants were missing Plaxico Burress, Amani Toomer and Steve Smith, while Cleveland was without Braylon Edwards), Eli Manning showed that maybe the Superbowl victory was no fluke as he bombed two touchdown passes to receiver Domenik Hixon in the first quarter. Hixon, a third year receiver out of Akron who had only one reception for a measly five yards all of last season, looked like a Pro Bowl player in this one (4 catches for 63 yards and 2 TD), dragging his feet in the endzone on both touchdown grabs and also torching the Browns special teams for a kick off return touchdown. Even with the great game, at this point it doesn't appear that Hixon will be a relevant fantasy player this year...but if injury strikes one of the top three receives on the team, keep his name in mind as a possible late season sleeper.
