The Wire - Week 4: Time to wake up and smell the Coffee
Brandon
Here’s our waiver wire recommendations heading into week four, leading off with a guy who should have been a mandatory handcuff heading into the season, but apparently was not. As usual, The Wire is organized into four categories: Get ‘em in there, Pick up and hold, Stopgaps, and Pretenders. “Get ‘em in there” are the players worth of a start right away, while “Stopgaps” are the players who will get you through a short-term injury or bye week. “Pick up and hold” is just what is sounds like and “Pretenders” are those players who might have had one good week and immediately picked up in every Yahoo Public league out there…don’t waste a roster spot and waiver claim on them. In addition, you’ll find the Yahoo! ownership rank (in parenthesis) for each player so you know which guys have a better chance of being available in your league.
UPDATE! I’ve added Tashard Choice and Dante Rosario to this list after last night’s game, just to let you know.
Get ‘em in there
- Glen Coffee, RB, 49ers (48%) – It looks like Frank Gore will be out a week or two, so all of you who handcuffed Coffee to him in the draft are happy right now…the others, not so much. Glen didn’t play all that well, but he was going against a tough Vikings defense. He should put up decent numbers in Gore’s absense, as the team plays the Rams and Falcons in their next two games.
- Denver DEF (64%) – Who ever thought they’d be the top ranked defense after three weeks?! Seems that they’re the real deal.
- Correll Buckhalter, RB, Broncos (67%) – He had 108 yards on Sunday and while he splits carries with Knowshon Moreno, he makes for a decent injury fill-in RB2 or flex play from week-to-week.
- Mike Sims-Walker, WR, Jaguars (69%) – Sims-Walker is trying his hardest to wrestle the WR1 role away from Torry Holt and now has 12 receptions over his past two games. He makes a decent WR3 or flex play at this point.
- Brent Celek, TE, Eagles (79%) – This guy is one of the best tight ends in the league so far this season and is still only owned in 79% of the leagues out there. I assume he’ll be taken in at least 95% after Sunday’s 104 yard and a touchdown performance.

The Wire - Week 3: Plaxico who?
Brandon
Here’s our waiver wire recommendations for week two, starting with a pair of receivers who seemed to have solved the questions the Giants had at the position. As I mentioned last week, The Wire is organized into four categories: Get ‘em in there, Pick up and hold, Stopgaps, and Pretenders. This week I’ve added the Yahoo! ownership rank (in parenthesis) for each player so you know which guys have a better chance of being available in your league. Anyways, here we go…
Get ‘em in there
- Mario Manningham, WR, Giants (58%) – He’s rocketed up from being a “Pretender” to having me believe he and Smith will be the Giants top receivers this season.
- Steve Smith, WR, Giants (70%) – Looks like he’s become Plaxico Burress’ replacement and should be Eli’s top target all year.
- Correll Buckhalter, RB, Broncos (48%) – As long as he stays healthy, it looks like Buckhalter is the man in Denver. He’s worth starting as a borderline RB2 or flex play based on the match-up.
- Brent Celek, TE, Eagles (49%) – Celek showed some skills last season and it has apparently carried over, as he’s now put up solid numbers in two straight weeks. If you’re not getting production out of your current tight end, give Celek a try.

Broncos receiver Brandon Marshall has been suspended by the team, although the duration has not been specified yet, reports Mike Florio from ProFootballTalk. The maximum length of the suspension can be up to four games and if that is the case, his fantasy football stock takes a major hit. However, Eddie Royal and Brandon Stokley’s stock should be boosted quite a bit. Our wide receiver cheat sheet has been updated accordingly.
Update: Looks like his suspension is only for the remainder of the preseason, but I’m not quite sure how that benefits the team at all unless they simply want to prevent him from distracting the rest of the team. He’s just going to know less of the playbook and have ZERO chemistry with Kyle Orton. Maybe he’ll get traded? I can’t move him up our rankings until some positive news comes out regarding Mr. Marshall.

When I read Mike Florio’s (from PFT) headline, “Brandon Marshall officially is an idiot”, I was slightly offended. I never like someone mentioning my name and being “an idiot” in the same sentence…even if it’s not actually me being referred to. However, after watching the video he linked to on TheDenverChannel.com, I might have to agree with his statement about the disgruntled Broncos wide receiver. If you were considering drafting Brandon Marshall as your top receiver, you better have a good backup plan for when that blows up in your face.

Some quick notes from the past day or so…
- Looks like Broncos wide receiver Brandon Marshall may have had a good conversation with his agent or something, because he’s wisely returned to practice with the team’s offense (he previously was running with the scout team, mimicking opposing team’s star receivers.) The team has moved him back to the number one spot on the depth chart as well and as long as he can get some reps during one of these final preseason games, it’s probably safe to move him back up a few notches on your cheat sheet.
- Given the fact that Browns’ running back Jamal Lewis isn’t getting any younger and rookie James Davis has been outstanding this preseason, we could see more of a committee situation in Cleveland than at first expected.
- If you were hand-cuffing Bills running back Fred Jackson to Marshawn Lynch (out with a suspension for first three games), unfortunately he’s suffering from finger/wrist pain and there is now some question as to how much he’ll be able to play in the first game of the season. If he can’t play, Dominic Rhodes would get the bulk of the carries for the team. Just in case this situation wasn’t messy enough…

This Brandon Marshall vs Denver Broncos situation just seems to keep getting worse. One day he wants a trade, the next day he wants more money. He still doesn’t know the playbook and is practicing with the scout team. How much more can this guy tarnish the Brandon Marshall name?! Naturally, I’ve dropped him down slightly on the wide receiver cheat sheet.

Which teams don't want Terrell Owens - and which teams might
Matt
It’s the web page Drew Rosenhaus hopes you never see – ProFootballTalk.com is maintaining a running list of teams that have (wisely) stated they have no interest in signing Terrell Owens. I’m not going to copy and paste it here since it seems kind of douche-ish to copy the entirety of someone else’s work instead of linking to it. I was somewhat surprised that the list includes the Raiders, who were the first team that came to everyone’s mind when they wondered, “Who would drop a boatload of cash on a notorious locker room cancer who has gotten along with precisely nobody in his career and has at most two more productive seasons left in him?” It’s also interesting to see the that none of the three of the other teams in the NFC East are interested, which means T.O. won’t get the chance to avenge his ouster wearing the uniform of a division rival.
Of course, just because a team isn’t on this list doesn’t mean they’re thinking about acquiring him. Some teams might even consider the prospect of hiring T.O. so preposterous that they don’t even think it’s worth stating the obvious. Of the remaining NFL teams that might be interested, which ones might actually give him a chance? (More …)

Desperation is a Stinky Cologne: Extreme Sleepers for Week 6 2008
Matt
In a bind? This column is for those of you who, due to injury or other circumstances, find yourselves with a gaping hole at QB, RB or WR. It’s crunch time – let’s head to the free agent pool and see what we can dig up! There’s gotta be a few diamonds in the rough who might be able to help us out this week.
Remember, this differs from this week’s waiver wire post in that I’m not advising you to pick these players up if you’re seeking long-term production. Thanks to matchups, injuries, or other favorable conditions, these usually useless players are legitimately startable this week if you really need them, but in most cases aren’t worth a long-term roster spot. I’d make some joke about how they’re like the fat chick at the bar – they’re obviously available and they’ll do in a pinch – but that would make me a horrible person so I’ll exercise some restraint. Broncos' Brandon Marshall to be suspended two or three games
Brandon
Although no website I visit seems to be able to give an official report on the situation, all of them are reporting that Denver wide receiver Brandon Marshall will be suspended for three games due to his offseason issues. The three games can potentially be reduced to two games, if Marshall agrees to counseling during his suspension. I’m going to go out on a limb and assume that he’s not that arrogant that he would turn down the counseling, so let’s assume he’ll be out for the first two games of the season (possibly hanging out with Steve Smith or something).
We all knew this was coming, but we just weren’t sure of the details. While Steve Smith’s suspension came out of the blue, our power rankings for Marshall had already been adjusted accordingly, so even with this two or three game suspension, he still ranks as the 14th wide receiver, right before Wes Welker and the Detoit boys (Roy Williams and Calvin Johnson).

Cedric Benson waived by Chicago Bears
Brandon
After his second alcohol related incident in a month, the Chicago Bears have parted ways with their “supposed to be a superstar” running back:
“Cedric displayed a pattern of behavior we will not tolerate,” general manager Jerry Angelo said in a statement. “As I said this past weekend, you have to protect your job. Everyone in this organization is held accountable for their actions.”
It probably didn’t help that the Bears were probably already looking for alternatives at the position as Benson has been a massive disappointment since entering the league in 2005, averaging under four yards a carry and fifty yards a game throughout his career at this point. Note to players: If you’re sucking, don’t go and start screwing up off the field, or you’re likely to be canned…
