With the weather absolutely terrible here in the Northeast, I figured it was a good time to answer some of the Ask the Geeks questions that have come in over the past few days. We’ll most likely get one more post up before game time tomorrow, so if you have any last minute questions, make sure to get them in here or leave them as comments on this post!

Also, make sure to leave your feedback on our commenting system here at FFGeekBlog.com so we can figure out if we need to revise the system or not. Anyways, let’s get to the questions…

    Wolf asks…

Who would you put your money on…

    Brent Celek @SD
    Shockey @StL
    Carlson @Ari
    Shiancoe @Det

They’ve all been inconsistent.. who hits the mark with a good matchup.

Hey, guys! Would you trade your Christopher Johnson OR Ronald Brown for a Matthew Forte/Tony Gonzalez package?

My other tight end is Gregory Olsen and my accessory RBs are Bradshaw, Greene, Charles, Moats, and Bell.

      Thank you in advance!

      • Matt 5:15 pm on 11/14/2009 Permalink Reply

I definitely wouldn’t trade Chris Johnson for Forte + Gonzo in any case, and I don’t really like the Ronnie Brown trade either given Forte’s upcoming schedule – two games against the Vikings, plus the Ravens and Eagles. Pretty tough sledding.

Greg Olsen should be more than adequate at TE – despite Cutler’s struggles (or because of them?), Olsen appears to have finally hit his stride.

        • Squish 7:26 pm on 11/14/2009 Permalink

Agreed. Stand pat. Olsen should be solid the rest of the year.

Really struggling in deciding my Jacobs replacement RB, HELP PLEASE! It’s a MUST WIN week.

      Betts (vs DEN)
      C Williams (vs MIA)
      Fargas/Bush/McFadden (vs KC)
      Buckhalter (vs WAS)
      Bell (vs STL)
      Sproles (vs PHI)

      • Squish 11:59 pm on 11/14/2009 Permalink Reply

I think you have to go with Betts this week. The rest of those backs are all in committees and Betts will be too but with how poor their passing game is, he’ll get plenty of touches. So I’d definitely go with him. He’s questionable right now for his game so keep an eye on that. If it turns out he doesn’t play, go ahead and play Fargas since he’ll still have a large role on the first week of McFaddens’s return and has a good matchup.

You’ll be more successful if you consider every week a must win week ;)

        • Mal 12:30 am on 11/15/2009 Permalink

thanks Squish, I’ll slot in Betts for now and wake up early just before kick off (as am an Aussie) and if Betts is still looking injured I’ll drop him and pick up Fargas

Would Shonn Greene change this equation at all?

Hey, guys! I’m in desperate need of a flex this week: Charles, Avery, Greene, or Bell?

      You guys are the best!

      • Brandon 11:30 am on 11/15/2009 Permalink Reply

Jamaal Charles is likely to get the most attempts out of that group and has a great match-up against the Raiders. Shonn Greene is my second choice though and is the higher risk/higher reward play.

      Guys,

Mendenhall or Steven Jackson? I’m leaning towards Mendenhall because I’m thinking the NO game will be a blow-out early and they will not be using the running game all that much. What do you think?

      • Brandon 11:33 am on 11/15/2009 Permalink Reply

I’d still go with Steven Jackson. Mendenhall has a tough match-up with the Bengals and Roethlisberger will most likely take matters into his hands for a majority of the game. You know the Rams are going to get the ball to their only offensive weapon a ton of times (at least early in the game.)

As The Fantasy Football Geek Blog continues to grow, Matt and I are noticing a lot more activity from our awesome readers. On certain posts, we’ve gotten upwards of 40-50 comments and with the current format we use, this means that all those comments show up on the main page (FFGeekBlog.com.) This may cause some readers a bit of frustration if they’re searching for a specific post that we’ve published. We’ve already mentioned the “Hide Threads” button, which allows you to collapse all comments on the page, as well as added a new sidebar section (“Latest Posts”) that allows you to view the five most recent posts, but maybe this isn’t enough. We’re interested to how our readers feel about our current commenting format and see if anyone had suggestions on how we could possibly improve it. We definitely don’t want to discourage anyone from commenting, so if you feel that hiding comments on the main page will prevent you from responding to our posts, please let us know. Please let us know what you think and thanks in advance for the input!

I think at this point people are used to seeing comments in blogs only after clicking on the entry. This is one of the only sites I know that shows comments on the front page – and I find it very distracting. Great site otherwise.

      Thanks!

      • Brandon 8:34 pm on 11/13/2009 Permalink Reply

Thanks for the input Adam. In the meantime, I recommend you use the “Hide Threads” button. It’s not perfect, as you have to do it every time you come back to the main page, but it’s a start until we see what the masses prefer.

        • Wolf 9:38 pm on 11/13/2009 Permalink

I personally like having the comments on the first page right away because I keep up with the site enough to see when a new thread starts… and I just use the Hide button when I want to find an old thread. However, I think enough people read through here that having the comments only on the threads themselves is fine (and the usual way to set it up). Most people’s comments are directed towards you guys anyways!!

Can someone please explain this for me please??? Tommy Harris from the Chicago Bears is fined $7,500 for punching a cardinals player ( I don’t know his name) in the face, with malicous intent. Chad Ochocinco Johnson is fined $20,000 for clearly kidding around by holding a $1 bill in his hand pretending to tip off a ref to decide a challenged call in his favor, are you kidding me?? I think Roger Godell is a good commissioner, but what is the deal?? Does he have something against Chad? Should’nt the fines be flipped flopped?? What do think??

This is what happens when you establish blanket rules that cover very broad categories of “misconduct.”

        • Squish 9:05 am on 11/18/2009 Permalink

Add in that that Bud Adams got fined $250k for flipping the bird in the owners box. Can we go back to defenses being able to put QBs in the hospital and helmet to helmet hits being encouraged?

I apologize in advance for “extending” the comments on posts. I tend to be a lot longer winded than I would like. Seems every comment I mean to be a sentence or two has multiple paragraphs shortly following. What can I say? When you have a passion you have a passion lol. I try to present all the evidence I have so that the inquirer may make a decision giving all the information available.

I’ll try to cut down a bit since I’m sure I’m at least a quarter the problem lately. On a related note, I’m all for just having the most recent comments show as most often the other comments have already been addressed.

P.S. Be aware of a possible incoming traffic increase. I’ve been spreading the word on the Yahoo discussion forums of this sites great ability to answer questions fast and accurately. Most of the guys asking advice on those forums have been sorely disappointed and I figured it was a great place to “recruit” a few more followers ;)

Absolutely no need to apologize for your well-thought-out, detailed comments. They add a lot to the discussion and Brandon and I appreciate all the time you spend on them. And thanks for spreading the word!

The good news for Jay Cutler, who last night threw five picks to take the NFL lead with 17 total INTs: At least your backup is Caleb Hanie. If you’ve never heard that name before, he’s an undrafted free agent out of Colorado State. I don’t mean to be rude, I’m sure he’s a nice guy, but Jay Cutler would have to intentionally score a touchdown for the other team before they’d put this guy in.

Woohoo, I get to create the “caleb haney” tag in Wordpress now!

Ah I forgot about the Thursday game! I’m not affected HOWEVER it makes sense why my Jacobs-Forte trade was accepted (the 24 hours would allow for Forte to be still in his team for the game) although i’m not sure if that’s a bad thing. I know you guys did recommend keeping Jacobs, but splitting carries with Bradshaw is a killer + it is becoming more and more apparent that they are going to Bradshaw for the goal line carries- at least Forte is a definite.

RB: Betts or Cad Williams? (Jacobs on bye)

      Cheers

As I mentioned in an earlier post, make sure to check your rosters before the game tonight so that you don’t get screwed with a starter on your bench (or even worse if there are leagues out there that lock rosters after the first game of the week starts!) Anyways, I wanted to get this post out with time to spare before game-time tonight in case any of the 49ers or Bears players made the list. Here are our “Hits” and “Misses” for week ten, listing players you want to make sure are in your lineup, as well as those you might consider shelving for the week (or at least lowering your expectations!) My fear isn’t that he won’t play, it’s that he’ll do exactly what he did last year – play through an injury that slowly ruins his performance.

So I have both Brett Favre and Tom Brady on my FF team. Farve looks like the better match-up this week but Im worried that the Vikings will stomp all over the Lions early thus taking Farve out of the game early. Brady will be playing all game but a very tough game…. What should I do?!

        • Squish 9:16 pm on 11/12/2009 Permalink

Go with Brady. Why waste one of your studs? Favre may have performed well so far but there is no way he can be deemed on the level of Brady. You know Brady will toss a few tDs no matter who he’s playing so play him for sure.

Which 2 WRs should I start, Mike Sims Walker, Devin Hester, Santana Moss, or Robert Meachem?

      • Brandon 5:50 pm on 11/12/2009 Permalink Reply

Although Sims-Walker has a tough match-up, go with him and Devin Hester. Moss made my “Miss” list this week and Meachem is too risky.

        • Squish 8:04 pm on 11/12/2009 Permalink

Agreed. If Hester can still play the way he did last week injured then he’s a legitimate fantasy WR now. I learned the consequences of benching MSW last week. Don’t make yourself go through that Anthony.

In a debacle this week. Should I start: Which one?

Austin Collie-Colts WR vs. New England
      Devery Henderson-Saints WR vs. Rams

      • Brandon 10:03 am on 11/13/2009 Permalink Reply

Go with Henderson for sure. Better match-up and he’s been solid the past few games.

    • Scotty 5:11 pm on 11/13/2009 Permalink Reply

Hey Brandon, I’m in a PPR leauge & I’m wondering who I should start: Kevin Smith vs. Minn or Lesean McCoy vs. SD? Minn def is stout & will be rested coming off a bye; however, Smith will undoubtedly get the lion’s share of touches (& he performed ok against Minn earlier this season). Whereas McCoy has an easier matchup, he will be sharing time with Westbrook, according to Andy Reid. What do you think?

      • Brandon 5:31 pm on 11/13/2009 Permalink Reply

Even with Kevin Smith getting “the lion’s share” (pun intended), I still like LeSean McCoy against a suspect Chargers run defense. There’s still a chance Brian Westbrook doesn’t play, so McCoy would be a definite start in that case.

    • Jojo 6:38 pm on 11/13/2009 Permalink Reply

OK. I have Cutler and only him…moment of silence please. On the waiver my choices are limited moving forward. Sanchez, Freeman, T. Edwards, and J. Campbell. Which one is the best pick moving forward for possible matchup play??

      • Brandon 10:13 pm on 11/13/2009 Permalink Reply

Let’s not go too crazy on thinking Jay Cutler is a lost cause…just two games ago he threw for 369 yards and three touchdowns against the Cardinals (although a lot was in garbage time I guess.) Either way, none of those QB’s you’ve listed strike my fancy, but if I had to pick any of them right now I’d say Mark Sanchez. Josh Freeman is a wildcard though. Watch him over the next game or so and see what kind of numbers he puts up.

    • Ken 1:25 am on 11/14/2009 Permalink Reply

Normally a no brainer but seeing the numbers guys like Randy moss and Andre Johnson put up against the jets I’m worried about starting simswalker.

You like msw or breaston better this week? I’m leaning tiwards breaston but a second opinion always helps.

      Thanks!

      • Squish 7:08 am on 11/14/2009 Permalink Reply

I can answer the question for everyone on this board I think. Brandon and Mike will definitely say go with MSW despite his poor matchup. I am more or less in agreement with them. But, I will go out on a limb and say that if Boldin is out this week, Breaston should be the better play this week for sure.

    • Ken 9:23 am on 11/14/2009 Permalink Reply

Thanks squish. Yea, I mean the cardinals usually score well against seatle and breaston pulled in 17 points in my ppr league last time. But i got this nagging feeling that’s not going to happen again. I think seatle’s def is gonna step up a bit this week.

But man, the only time I saw Revis eff up was his booboo against ted ginn in miami’s Jet’s first match. Otherwise he’s shut down every receiver, and I doubt MSW is gonna be amy dif. So its a tough call.

      • Brandon 1:29 pm on 11/14/2009 Permalink Reply

Hah, Squish called me out I guess…and he’s right. Although Sims-Walker’s good games this season have all come at the expense of less-than-spectacular defenses, I can’t recommend you bench him for the likes of Steve Breaston. I’m not necessarily a “never bench your start player” kind of guy, but in this case, I wouldn’t bench your star guy. :-)

If D. Williams is out this weekend, who is the better play J. Stewart or Mendenhall?

      • Squish 12:05 am on 11/15/2009 Permalink Reply

If Williams is out I think Mendenthal is the better option. Carolina is facing a reasonable defense and Stewart really hasn’t looked good all season plus he’s been on the injury list for a majority of it. Mendenthal is clearly now the primary carrier in PIT and they’ll use him plenty against a Cincinatti team who’s DL is still hurting from the loss of Odom. Look for Pittsburgh’s OL to establish themselves early and often. Even if Mendenthal doesn’t get a big load of carries, he’ll do plenty with what he does get. I think you can count on at least a couple long runs by him and like a TD or two.

      • Brandon 11:26 am on 11/15/2009 Permalink Reply

I have to disagree with Squish here. If DeAngelo Williams is out, Stewart makes a great play against the Falcons. Minus his last game (against a tough Saints defense), he was running the ball pretty well and the last time he played the Falcons, he had a 7.2 ypc average on nine carries. I’d go with Stewart (IF DeAngelo Williams is out that is :-) )

      Hey Brandon,
I’ve been waffling back and forth (just call me Favre) about which QB to start. I’ve got Flacco with a great matchup or the always consistent Rivers with a not so great matchup against Philly. What do you think?

      • Squish 1:46 am on 11/15/2009 Permalink Reply

I like Rivers this week better than Flacco despite the matchup differences. All my most accurate sources have Rivers slightly ahead as well. The going consensus is that Baltimore won’t have to pass much against the Browns and because of that the great passing game matchup is more or less superficial. Rivers on the other hand will likely have to pass often in the competitive game he’s playing in and thus should accrue more fantasy points.

      • Brandon 11:28 am on 11/15/2009 Permalink Reply

I agree with Squish on this one. There are very few match-ups now where you would start Flacco over Rivers. Rivers’ upside is just too high with the weapons he has at his disposal.

Thank you both of you. Well articulated and sound reasoning. Looks like i’m going with Rivers!

    David asks…

I’m doing well in my league right now but I made a pretty big mistake early in the season, trading Addai, and others, for an injured McFadden, and others. I dropped McFadden but picked him up off waivers last week. With Jacobs out this week on bye, I need a second RB, and my other options include Buckhalter and Donald Brown. (I have MJD as my RB1). I’m in first place in my league, so no hope for a waiver pick-up and I’m not willing to trade anyone decent away at this point. My gut says that McFadden will have a decent RB2 game against KC. What do you think? Many thanks for the great site.

Great site. Very informative stuff. This is a make or break week for me in my league. It’s a non-PPR 12-team league. I have a few position questions for you.

WR – Start 2 – I have Reggie Wayne, Mike Sims-Walker, Steve Breaston, & Roy Williams. Who to start?

RB – Start 2 – I am starting Forte (By default). Who should be the other starter? I have Kevin Smith, Julius Jones, Kolby Smith, Correll Buckhalter.

WR/RB – Start 1. Whoever is not starting from any above, who should be the flex option?

      Thank you!

WR – No question about this one… Wayne and MSW are every-week WR1s while Breaston and Williams are more like low-end WR2s.

RB – I’m benching Kevin Smith this week; he’s been a huge disappointment and I’m only planning on using him once or twice over the rest of the season (definitely against Cleveland but that’s the only sure thing) unless something changes. I think Julius Jones’ skills as a receiver will be put to good use by the Seahawks quite often this week, making him a sneaky play despite the very solid Arizona rush defense.

        • b @ 12stepdrop.com 5:41 pm on 11/12/2009 Permalink

Jamey Eisenberg @ CBSSports just called MSW his sit of the week. Breaston (with Boldin back) and Williams are very iffy candidates for replacement though. Just temper your expectations with an MSW start …

          http://fantasynews.cbssports.com/fantasyfootball/story/12507320/start-em-and-sit-em—week-10/rss

        • Squish 8:22 pm on 11/12/2009 Permalink

The Geeks have had a huge MSW crush for awhile now but if I had listened to them last week about him I would have won an extra 2 games.

I’m a bit more tempered. I like to look at about 12 sources before I make a decision. To be perfectly honest, CBS is not a reliable source especially on WRs. They are useful mainly for QB and Kicker advice. I normally can’t argue with Yahoo but they have had one of the most accurate WR rankings/advice the last two years and are the single most accurate source this year at the position (thought they blow at all others).

That being said, your/their caution on MSW is well placed. Many of my sources have knocked him down a couple notches too. Yahoo, who normally loves him has him down at the 28th ranked WR this week. FFbreakdown has him at 28th too as do several other sources. I can’t find one where he is ranked better than 20th at WR.

Whether he performs better than his projections is TBD but either way, he’s still the best start in this case as b said since the other two WRs simply aren’t on the same level. Breaston and Williams are ranked 3-15 spots behind him on the accurate sites. But like b said, definitely temper your expectations. With Revis covering him, I’d be surprised to see him cross the 60 yard mark. He’s held AJ, R. Moss, and Colston to just over 30 yards each. He may be the best shutdown CB in the NFL this year.

        • Matt 10:10 am on 11/13/2009 Permalink

It’ll be an interesting clash of two newborn titans, that’s for sure. While Revis has been impressive this season and I don’t dispute that he’s already one of the best in the game, the sample size is pretty small in terms of top-flight WR talent he’s faced so far. The A. Johnson, Moss and Colston takedowns were impressive to be sure, but since then he’s had four straight games against offenses that can’t throw the ball (MIA, BUF, OAK, MIA), which has given coaches and players like MSW plenty of time to study tape on him.

That said – point taken. I do tend to lean pretty heavily on my mantra of start your stars, and this is one of those exceptional situations where that philosophy may be called into question. I still would start MSW over Breaston or Williams, but it’s not as much of a no-brainer as I said earlier.

      • Squish 8:28 pm on 11/12/2009 Permalink Reply

Woops! Forgot the rest of the question! For RB, I’d definitely go with Smith. I’d say go with Buckhalter for your Flex. Denver will likely be on the ground a lot against Washington enough so that both Buckhalter and Moreno should both have productive games.

        • Robb 11:48 pm on 11/12/2009 Permalink

I fear Revis. He’s such a beast but I really have no other option at WR. Roy Williams and Forte have let me down this year immensely. It seems that people are mixed about Kevin Smith. As a former UCF alumni, it pains me to say he has disappointed. Forte is playing well in the receiving game tonight against the 49ers, which could be a good sign in the future! Thanks for the help everyone.

    • Amir 12:38 pm on 11/12/2009 Permalink Reply

I would start –Wayne, MSW, Roy Williams, Forte and K Smith

      • Robb 1:39 pm on 11/12/2009 Permalink Reply

I think I have to start Kev. Smith. Julius only gained 5 yards total against Arizona in their last match-up and the other two are not even starters (even though Buckhalter started against the Steelers).

You think Roy will continue his production from last week going forward?

    • Lindsay 1:44 pm on 11/12/2009 Permalink Reply

Thanks for all the awesome info. I come here each week to get insight on my team. This is my first year playing ff since my bros sort of forced me into it…Don’t get me wrong, I love football, but I definitely don’t know enough about all the different players yet. I am learning for sure. Anyway, used your picks last week, except for a sudden gut feeling to switch out Portis for Moats at the very last second which payed off since he got a concussion in the first quarter…lucky break I guess…so I won my matchup and am back to 3rd place in a 10 team league. So I need some help again this week. I am really lacking with WRs and RBs. Need 3 WRs and 2RBs and a flex…here are the options…

WRs…Colston, Collie, Evans, Knox, and Floyd
      RBs…Forte, R. Williams, Buckhalter, L. Betts

      on waivers…Mcfadden, Fargas, Choice, Faulk
Mark Clayton, N. Washington, Bennet…if any of these would be better!

Also for my defense I had been using GB, but dropped them and should I pick up ATL, TEN, ARI?

I am thinking QB Romo over Orton for sure and Celek is my current TE.

      Thanks for all the help!!!

      • Robb 1:57 pm on 11/12/2009 Permalink Reply

Welcome to the world of fantasy football! I’d start..

WR – Colston, Collie, and Floyd
RB – Forte and Ricky Williams (terrible Tampa run defense)
Flex – Buckhalter. He is involved in the passing game and still gets touches.
DEF – I’d go with either TEN or ARI. TEN is playing BUF, who has no offense. Arizona is one of the best teams in stopping the run and might be a good source of sacks this and INTs this week against the Seahawks.

For a waiver claim, think about Kolby Smith from KC. I know KC is a black hole for offense but he could be the starter soon and KC is playing better. Also, think about Sammy Morris from NE (if someone dropped him early). He will return from injury soon.

        Good luck!

        • Lindsay 3:43 pm on 11/12/2009 Permalink

Thanks so much for the input…I really feel at a loss this week for who to play, although I normally do this anyway…go back and forth. Regularly though I would have Smith(nyg) to put in my WR slot, but he is on bye. My concerns are that Floyd is playing PHI and I am not sure if he can get it done. Not that Evans or Know can get it done any better, but really who will pull the biggest number for me? My opponent pulled 202 pts. last week and I am scared. I beat him the last time we had a matchup, but this week my options are more limited…AHHHH!! I hate this. I am too competitive and who likes to loss?

      • Squish 8:40 pm on 11/12/2009 Permalink Reply

For WR I’d definitely go with Colston and Collie. For the third spot I suggest you take a flier. My most trusted source has Lee Evans ranked ahead of all your Wrs but Colston and for good reason. TO is likely going to be hampered if not out in their game and Edwards is likely to start at this point. Edwards favorite target has always been Evans and it’s more than likely that relationship will establish itself again.

At RB I agree with Robb. At Flex however, I’d consider grabbing Fargas and dropping Knox, then playing Fargas this week at flex. He’s the primary carrier in Oakland until McFadden gets comfortable again. I like him better than Buckhalter this week.

At defense, I’ve been totting Arizona all week because of their success against Seattle earlier in the season. That being said, I think Atlanta is the safe play this week.

    • sal 2:05 pm on 11/12/2009 Permalink Reply

i am screwed at RB, but somehow still in first place – I am starting DeAngelo Williams – who should start with him? the running back formerly known as “fast” willie or Run DMC (McFadden)?- Moats is on a BYE and I’m waiting to see if LJ lands anywhere worthwhile…thanks for the assistance :)

      • Matt 4:18 pm on 11/12/2009 Permalink Reply

You aren’t all that screwed at RB if you’ve got DeAngelo Williams. :) As for your other options – yikes. Nobody useful on the waiver wire, huh? Willie’s useless. McFadden’s a huge gamble. Take the gamble.

Wow! There is honestly nobody better on your waiver wire?! What is this a rapiddraft team? All of these guys are better starts this week and may be available:

        Justin Fargas vs. KC
        Jamaal Charles at OAK
        Mike Bell at STL
        Kolby Smith at OAK
        Correll Buckhalter at WAS
        Jamal Lewis vs. BAL
        Felix Jones at GB
        Derrick Ward at MIA
        Carnell Williams at MIA
        Rock Cartwright vs. DEN
        Darren Sproles vs. PHI
        Tashard Choice at GB
        Chester Taylor vs. DET

If you absolutely have to, go with Run DMC.

    • Shirley 2:39 pm on 11/12/2009 Permalink Reply

If DMC is active on Sunday, then I’d go with him. I think Parker’s like third string on the Steelers now? I think I read that he had no touches and Mewelde Moore had a couple but the majority went to Mendenhall. Any other guys on the waiver wire?

I like this trade a lot actually. You’re giving up a quarterback you would have benched all year anyways (unless *knock on wood* Brady got hurt) and getting a huge upgrade at the WR position. Go for it!

I think I commented on a similar situation on another post, but I still don’t recommend benching Sims-Walker. It looks like Anquan Boldin will play, meaning Breaston becomes the third option on the team. Collie has a tough match-up with the Patriots. If you definitely plan to sit MSW though, go with Steve Breaston, who gets a bunch of looks as his team throws the ball a ton.

        • Matt 10:16 am on 11/13/2009 Permalink

I for one am glad you started Cutler. This week’s FFGeekBlogger smackdown in our League of Champions:

Brandon: Cutler, Derrick Mason, Ochocinco, Randy Moss, Frank Gore, Shonn Greene, Kellen Winslow, Nate Kaeding, Miami.
Matt: McNabb, Miles Austin, Houshmanzilly, Crabtree, Tim Hightower, Steven Jackson, Greg Olsen, Dan Carpenter, Denver.

I feel the need to point out that Andre Johnson is on a bye for my team. Still, should be a pretty even matchup.

        • Brandon 10:33 am on 11/13/2009 Permalink

Luckily Crabtree and Olsen didn’t play out of their minds and Frank Gore had a good enough game that if I average he and Cutler’s scores, it equals a crappy-to-moderate performance from each. I’m just hoping for another breakout performance from Shonn Greene to carry me to victory…

Plenty of fantasy intrigue around the league in week 10. Here are a few situations I’ll definitely be keeping an eye on.

Joe Flacco @ Cleveland: Wacko Flacco (sorry) has been shaky lately, so it’ll be interesting to see him take on a team that he played well against earlier in the season (342 yards, 1 TD, 0 INT, 111.8 passer rating in week 3). If Flacco can repeat or improve upon that performance, he’ll reestablish himself as a startable fantasy QB when the matchup’s right.

LeSean McCoy/Brian Westbrook vs. San Diego: How shaky is Westbrook’s ankle? Will McCoy continue to make a convincing case for more touches? Andy Reid just watched the division lead get ripped away from him by the surging Cowboys, so it’ll be interesting to see which running back he favors when push comes to shove.

      • Matt 10:57 am on 11/12/2009 Permalink Reply

Dan! Knew you’d find the blog eventually. :)

I’ve been wrong about Witten all season (not that anyone’s been right about him), so at this point I don’t know what to say. Benching Witten in fantasy football feels like benching Chris Paul in fantasy basketball – they both should be the best at their position, so it’s puzzling to see Witten fall off the planet and a guy like Miles Austin take center stage. Thing is, he continues to catch passes – seven receptions last week – which usually is what you look for in a tight end. He just hasn’t broken any big plays or been a major factor in the end zone this year.

Would I start Zach Miller in his place? No. He’s a Raider. ‘Nuff said. But there are several other decent tight ends who would make a better start than Witten at this point (off the top of my head, Olsen, Celek, the other Miller, Gates, Gonzo, V. Davis, Clark, Shockey).

    • Squish 2:24 am on 11/12/2009 Permalink Reply

Flacco the person to watch against Cleveland?! He doesn’t even have to play that game. Give Ray Rice the ball in the wildcat every play of the game and they’ll win by 40.

In my mind Flacoo’s already legitimately start-able. However, with how weak half their schedule is, I don’t pretend they need to pass the ball to win games like this one.

      • Matt 10:49 am on 11/12/2009 Permalink Reply

That’s actually a large part of what I’m getting at. The Ravens are in flux right now after losing four of their last five, and it will be interesting to see whether they focus more on the run or the pass as they try to rediscover their winning ways.

    • Ken 2:44 am on 11/12/2009 Permalink Reply

it would be a blast if CJ topped his week 2 performance in buffalo. If its possible for him to top that game, buffalo’s the team to do it against.

I wish my rb situation was anywhere near to that productive haha. Finally managed to get a trade off…traded Nicks, Knox and Sammy Morris for Addai. Considering my depth at WR, I think I got a steal. (fitzgerald, sims-walker, jennings, devin hester, steve breaston)

Although Im still left with a choice between Mike Bell and Shon Greene as my RB2. Any suggestions? I think Greene has the potential for more touches overall, and the Jags don’t have a great rush def. But if the saints pop out early, and go to run for most of the game, I’m thinking Bell could get a lot of 3rd and 4th qtr work.

Think its worth putting Bell in over Greene despite him losing the battle to PT?

      • Squish 3:26 am on 11/12/2009 Permalink Reply

Yeah Ken, you got a steal there. You gave up 3 guys with barely any fantasy relavance for an all intensive purposes stud. WTG!

I’d say definitely play Green at RB this week over Bell. Bell has dropped to 3rd on NOs depth chart at RB and he lost a key fumble last week. I wouldn’t expect much out of him this year now that the rest of the rB core there is healthy. Green should at least get 13 or so touches guaranteed and will be most useful in the receiving game I think. If it’s PPR Green looks even better but I’d say play him either way as he’ll be used at least twice as much as Bell.

      • e-roc 9:07 am on 11/12/2009 Permalink Reply

IMO, I think you’ll get the same amount of production/points out of either player.

      • Matt 4:32 pm on 11/12/2009 Permalink Reply

Yep, nice trade. Sounds like you found an Addai hater who just wanted to dump him and be done with him.

Bell and Greene are both risky in the same way – neither is the starter, both have talent and a good matchup this week, and for both of them their production will depend largely upon how the game goes and what the defense is giving up. If one of them has a big game, it’ll be because he broke off a big play, not because he touched the ball 20 times.

I can’t call this one. Go with your gut.

Which of these WRs do I start: Crabtree, Breaston or Cotchery?
      Crabtree has a game today.
Boldin should be playing this week which brings Breaston back down to a WR3 but Breaston had 77 yards and a touchdown earlier this season against SEA.
Cotchery is doing pretty well when he’s not injured and he’s going up against JAC which has a bad pass defense.

I think my main question is do I start Crabtree or the other guys? I really hate it when I have players that have games on Thursdays because you’re really forced to make a quick decision. *sigh*

With nine weeks of data in the books on this year’s NFL team defenses, it’s now pretty clear which matchups you should absolutely love to see on your players’ schedules for the remainder of the season.

    Passing Defense

    Worst of the Worst:

Detroit Lions: They allow a whopping 263 passing yards per game, including games where they gave up 358 to Brees, 340 to Campbell, 358 to Rodgers, and 329 to Hasselbeck. And only the Titans (who I’ll get to in a minute) have allowed more passing TDs.

Kansas City Chiefs: Only ten sacks on the season, second-worst in the league, and only three interceptions, which is obviously the worst. (Interesting aside – the Redskins, who give up the fewest yards per game, are tied with the Browns for the second-fewest INTs – just four.)

A lot of my sources like Sidney Rice this week so think about taking him. Kevin Smith is the obvious option to me but I like taking a chance on Rice this week. You can’t expect much from Marshall against Washington’s pass defense and they should be WAY ahead all day. CJ hasn’t shown he’s fully healed yet so I’d wait to begin starting him again.

So your real choices are Sidney Rice or Kevin Smith. The problem is that both of them have a downside. Rice won’t be getting too many looks because his team won’t need to pass and he’s got all kinds of competition at WR on his own team.. Kevin Smith gets looks but has done next to nothing with them. He has only 1 run over 20 yards all season and is averaging only 3.3 YPC. In the end I’d say take Smith if you only need 8 or 9 points (the highest projection I’ve seen for him in PPR is 16 with a low of 4) and Rice if you’d like more upside (I’ve seen PPR projections as a high as 24 points with a low of 7.8).

My personal pick is Rice in both standard and PPR.

Great post Matt. I’ve been tracking things more in my head but it’s really nice to see it all spelled out on the same page! I’ve definitely been planning to have these playoff matchups anywhere I can.

As I said a few weeks ago it was a good idea to target Hightower who was low value then. I traded for him in several leagues and now my mouth is watering over his SF, DET, STL series of matchups which have Arizona as a team ranked in the top 5 of projected playoff fantasy scoring in every standard FF position.

As it is now, for weeks 14-16 the top 5 at each position for projected (based on the average points given up by the teams on their schedule those weeks) are:
QB – Hard to be able to do anything here. All the good QBs are already taken. However, Henne may be a viable fill-in down the stretch for Ryan and Orton owner’s (ranked 32nd worst and 27th worst playoff QB schedules respectively)
      1. SD
      2. MIA
      3. STL
      4. ARI
      5. NO

RB – Watch the Jamaal Charles/Kolby Smith situation very closely. Go after Hightower if you can. I guarantee he pays off down the stretch. Also be the first to jump on Fred Taylor if he comes back.
      1. KC
      2. NE
      3. WAS
      4. ATL
      5. ARI

WR – I’m ignoring STL and MIA because their offenses suck but at this point consider trading AJ or R. Moss for VJ or Fitz for a matchup upgrade down the stretch.
      1. MIA
      2. STL
      3. SD
      4. NO
      5. ARI

TE – More or less doesn’t mean anything since they don’t have reliable options (save SF)
      1. TEN
      2. CIN
      3. SF
      4. ARI
      5. HOU

DEF – Keep these in mind especially because a lot of them are available. I’ve had defenses in the Championship game win me as many titles as any other position.
      1. NYG
      2. NE
      3. ARI
      4. BAL
      5. OAK

Anyway, just thought I’d add some stuff in. For a wider range of values go here:

I dropped the Falcons and picked up the Titans v. Buffalo… they have another juicy match-up in Week 14…

I’m not high on ATL in facing the solid Carolina RBs after allowing 17 pts to the hapless and hopeless Redskins.

I normally played Phili or GB as my defenses.. but GB has let me down in too many “easy” games… I may go with Baltimore vs Cleveland this week as all the other top matchups are taken.

What do you think of the Cardinals D/ST going up against the Seahawks this week? I wanted to pick up the Dolphins because they should beat the Bucs but the Bucs could still score at least a TD or two and get a decent amount of yards.

      • Brandon 2:39 pm on 11/11/2009 Permalink Reply

I’d go with Miami. Even if they give up some points, Josh Freeman isn’t experienced enough and is almost guarenteed to make a mistake or two, which could lead to a defensive touchdown. Plus, if your league awards for special teams scores, you have Ted Ginn returning the ball.

        • Shirley 3:19 pm on 11/11/2009 Permalink

Thanks, Brandon. You’ve yet to steer me wrong :D

        • Squish 9:53 pm on 11/11/2009 Permalink

I’d have to disagree. The Cardinals as a team have forced 3 more TOs than Miami and are a threat to block a kick every week as well as giving up far less points than Miami. Sure Miami will outscore them if they get ST TDs but with 2 on the year, you can’t count on it. I do agree that freeman merely was a fluke but I think the DST upside goes to the Cardinals anyway.

The great part about Arizona’s matchup this week is that we know they have a huge advantage on the line. When they played Seattle earlier this year (27-3) they had Hasselbeck running around like a chicken without a head. Hasselbeck got sacked 5 times (and near sacked another 8) lost a fumble and threw an INT. He had a completion % of only 34 and the team as a whole only had 128 yards. And this was when Warner was in a slump.

Add in the fact that Hasselbeck re-injured himself against the Lions and now has a sore shoulder to go with his broken ribs. The coach himself stated that Hasselbeck is currently too sore to throw downfield (as his stats from last game show). I mean he didn’t even crack 100 QB rating against the freakin’ Lions! He still hasn’t finished a full practice since his injury. Look for Arizona to blitz like madmen the whole game.

As a team, Seattle has played 5 different OL lineups in its last 8 games. The left side of their OL is in complete shambles with their two best tackles out for the season. They simply can’t protect Hasselbeck as is. Add the fact that they have a 30th ranked rushing offense in the league and I’ll be surprised if they can even get 200 yards against Arizona.

Also, since both Miami and Arizona are at home it is a good idea to look at how well the teams they are playing do on the road. The Seahawks have lost all their road games on the year and have only had more than 300 net yards in one of them. TB has also lost their 3 road games but have scored more points and averaged more yards in their losses.

In short, I think Miami’s DST is the safe play but I think Arizona has way more upside.

Here are our waiver wire candidates for week ten. As usual, you’ll find players who are either [Startable], a [Stopgap] to get you past a BYE or injury, [Worth a look] and spot on your bench, or [One-week-wonder]s who don’t warrant a roster spot, so you make your roster moves accordingly. You’ll also see the percent owned in parenthesis (and if you see an asterisk by the players name, it means they’re on a BYE this week.)

I usually don’t include players that are already owned in around 80% of the Yahoo leagues out there and Charles is owned in 79%. Plus, he only got six carries (and caught three passes) with LJ out this past weekend…so he’s not a strong play anyways.

        • Amir 12:12 pm on 11/10/2009 Permalink

With LJs departure are they just not gonna run the ball anymore? Any chance Kolby Smith sees action if Charles is ineffective?

Smith could very well see action right away, but I don’t think it’s going to make much of a difference. If you’re looking for 3-4 points out of the RB position, then feel free to take a chance on him.

      • Matt 10:02 am on 11/10/2009 Permalink Reply

Depends on your needs, really – Portis will probably be back in a week or two, so if you need points right now (because your team is only borderline for the playoffs and every week is important), then it might be smart to pick up Betts and get what you can out of him before Portis returns. If you aren’t desperate for short-term points, Chambers is a better bet to continue to produce later in the season.

The Bears still have to face Minnesota twice and Philly and Green Bay once each. I wouldn’t start them in any of those games, so that doesn’t leave you with much reason to hold onto them. Green Bay’s upcoming schedule is better but not stellar.

The Bengals, on the other hand, have Oakland, Cleveland, Detroit and Kansas City on the menu in coming weeks. All juicy matchups. They’re by far a better bet than the two you have now.

        • Squish 10:24 pm on 11/11/2009 Permalink

I agree with Matt. Though if Arizona is available grab them since they have a ridiculously good playoff schedule. And they shouldn’t be too shabby against a Seattle team they literally destroyed last time either.

I own Jason Witten and no other tight ends. He gets a lot of targets every week but is currently the 15th ranked TE in my 10 team league. Do I keep taking my chances with him? There are some free agent TEs that beat him but none of them are consistant? Pick them up? Blah blah blah — whats you take on his fantasy season?

      • Brandon 2:31 pm on 11/11/2009 Permalink Reply

I still like Jason Witten down the stretch. He is getting looks from Romo every week, which is more than you can say for a bunch of the borderline TE’s out there. it would be nice if he saw some more looks in the redzone, but hopefully that will happen over the second half of the season.

      • Squish 12:01 am on 11/12/2009 Permalink Reply

I’m in a similar situation in a couple leagues. Unfortunately, unless you were lucky enough to grab Celek early on, you’re probably stuck starting Witten the rest of the year. Unlike Brandon though, I don’t see him getting any better. Dallas has the 28th toughest TE schedule for the rest of the year. It’s unlikely they’ll get any better for TE scoring if they haven’t done it so far. That being said, your TE wire is likely slim pickings so you’ll want to stay with Witten who constantly outperforms his matchups. He might have a few big games in him down the stretch.

Now if you have a roster spot free, it may be worth picking up Pettigrew as a insurance policy that might turn into a borderline starter. Once Calvin Johnson is back in form in Detroit, Pettigrew will likely get less coverage applied to him. It’s a longshot but probably worth a look.

Gates over Celek..Really?? IDK, I can go Henderson over Meachem, but why Gates, he had two huge drops against NY and Celek has been $$ last two weeks.

        • Brandon 4:10 pm on 11/11/2009 Permalink

Celek has only been money the past two weeks because he’s found the endzone in each. Even with his dropped passes, Antonio Gates isn’t going to be ignored when the Chargers get in the redzone. The Eagles are the second worst team in the league when it comes to points allowed to the tight end position.

      • Squish 10:20 pm on 11/11/2009 Permalink Reply

In a ppr league I’d have to go with Jennings. Jennings is historically very good against Dallas and has averaged almost 20 points per game in his 2 outings against them. The Ocho is averaged only about 14 points per game against the Steelers in his last 4 against them. He plays particularly poorly against them on the road so I wouldn’t look for him to have too big a day this week @ PIT.

I like Henderson straight up but I do think Collie will have a far bigger role in the game than he will. The only thing knocking Henderson above Collie is the fact that Collie has an injury of sorts from last week. It may be healed already but I’ll still take Henderson over him for that reason.

      • Brandon 9:59 am on 11/12/2009 Permalink Reply

Go with Henderson this week, who has a great match-up with the Rams and should get a few looks on deep routes from Drew Brees.

need help…who should I start in my OP this week…Matt Forte or hope Kyle Orton rebounds??? Also, should I go with the Saints @ STL. or Vikings vs. DET for defense???

      • Squish 10:02 pm on 11/11/2009 Permalink Reply

If the scoring is standard, Orton should be a better play than Forte this week. Forte has a better matchup but QBs are always good for more points since their chance of scoring TDs is much higher.

As for the defense, it’s really a toss up. I personally like the Saints. they aren’t the best in ground defense but they should be ahead all day forcing a horrible STL passing offense to be very active all day. The Vikings are a good play too but their passing defense scares me. Sure they won’t allow much on the ground but how much will Detroit really be running the ball? I’d say NO is your best bet this week. They may not get many sacks but they get turnovers like nobody else and almost 3rd of their TOs go for TDs. I like their chances.

        • MattyIce02 11:17 pm on 11/11/2009 Permalink

thanks squish…the scoring is standard by the way, I feel like Forte has a tough matchup with the niners (which is why I’m undecided) but I feel like the Broncos will run..run…run….all day not giving Orton many attempts?? what do you think…still go with Orton??

        • Squish 11:49 pm on 11/11/2009 Permalink

I’d say yes. In standard scoring, Orton is predicted to have slightly more points and I think everyone can agree that he has a much bigger upside simply from being a QB. On the other hand, Forte faces a top 5 rush defense and Chicago has more or less become a passing team.

I like Orton more because his defense should get him more chances to score TDs. Even if they run a lot, I still think he’ll get more red zone chances than Chicago will have against SF. Chicago’s defense on the other hand is shoddy at best right now. I have them losing that game which doesn’t bode well for Forte since Chicago will likely be down all game.

It’s really up to you. The projected scoring for the two players is about the same. It’s just my personal rule to play a QB in a flex when you can even if that QB has a horrible matchup. In one league I’ll be playing Alex Smith over Tomlinson this week. I’ve done similar things all year and am leading the league in scoring. But that’s just my rule. You can do what you want. I don’t think it will make too big a difference (in this situation) either way.

      • Brandon 10:32 am on 11/12/2009 Permalink Reply

I have to agree with Squish here on the Orton/Forte debate. I don’t think the Broncos offense is good enough to get them into a position where they can completely abandon the pass. Orton will throw plenty and should get a touchdown or two (hopefully to my boy Brandon Marshall!)

As for your defense, both are great plays. I like the Saints this week though against Marc Bulger and the Rams, who are almost guaranteed to throw a pick or two against New Orleans. If they can take one back to the house, all the better!

Oh yeah one more question. Would you play Chargers defense or the titans defense this week? Seems to me the Titans have a easy opponent in the bills. The chargers play the eagles. What do you think?

        • Brandon 10:36 am on 11/12/2009 Permalink

Go with Shockey and the Titans. If you’re worried about the Saints running the ball a lot, just remember, they have to score a few touchdowns first (most likely through the passing game) before feeling safe and switching to the PT Cruiser and the running game.

      • Squish 11:54 pm on 11/11/2009 Permalink Reply

Shockey is definitely the safer play. Wait another game to see how Freeman plays before you put your trust completely in Winslow.

I’ve got to go with Tennessee for your defense. Like you said, they have a far better matchup. They also have gotten some key players back recently and should hit their real form in a week or two. The Chargers are facing an Eagle’s offense that is really starting to hit its stride. Play the Titans defense for sure!

We’d be able to announce the winner of the $50 NFL.com gift card contest today if it weren’t for the two folks who picked Ben Roethlisberger (nobody picked Orton, which is shocking, simply shocking). Thanks a lot guys! ;) Buy hey, maybe you’re right and Big Ben will be too much for the usually-stifling Denver D.

If Ben doesn’t have a huge game, the winner will be randomly selected from the four contestants who picked Kurt Warner, who went from five INTs last week to five touchdowns (and zero picks) this week. Pretty embarrassing for the Chicago D, but a very nice pick by the four of you who were willing to give him a shot at redemption.

Early thoughts on Chris Chambers? Is he really a threat to Bowe’s fantasy value? They pretty much had the same numbers except for (ahem) 2 TDs…

      • Brandon 5:46 pm on 11/09/2009 Permalink Reply

I don’t think he’s a direct threat to Bowe and if anything, should help him by taking some of the defense’s focus off him. Chambers did great this past weekend, but like Braylon Edwards in New York, he could put up a few stinkers once defenses have a little game tape to look at. As I mention in The Wire this week though, keep an eye on him and see if Matt Cassel takes a liking to him.

In the Blogger League, I just accepted a trade, giving up Peyton Manning (gasp!) and Bernard Berrian for Ben Roethlisberger and Miles Austin. What does everyone think? I also have Matt Ryan as my backup quarterback, so I wasn’t too worried about depth there. My only real good receiver though was Chad Ochocinco, so now I have a solid duo there.

Anyways, good luck everyone this week!

Would need to see who your other WRs are.

      • Squish 1:22 pm on 11/08/2009 Permalink Reply

I like it! No real depreciated value at QB and l what looks to be a huge upgrade at WR. Nice trade!

      • Brandon 9:30 am on 11/09/2009 Permalink Reply

It’s a strange league where you only have to start 2 WR if you want…but you can start another in the flex spot. I also have Santana Moss, Mario Manningham, and Malcom Floyd on my team, so if necessary they can fill the flex spot.

    • Jason 1:30 pm on 11/08/2009 Permalink Reply

In the flex today could use some help, Jonathan Stewart, Steve Smith(NyG), McCoy or Holmes? thanks fellas!

      • Squish 1:36 pm on 11/08/2009 Permalink Reply

With Westbrook unlikely to play, I like McCoy as your flex option. Steve Smith is a decent play too but normally it’s good to take an RB instead of a WR if only for the extra touches.

        • Squish 1:53 pm on 11/08/2009 Permalink

Actually now that I think of it just go with Steve Smith. NYG is struggling but he’s still a better play than Moss or Moats.

Woops! That post was supposed to go in the next set of questions, disregard it! Sorry!

    • Matt 2:00 pm on 11/08/2009 Permalink Reply

Good move overall. It’s a one-tier downgrade at QB and a two- or three-tier upgrade at WR. Austin’s the real deal.

    • Mal 10:09 pm on 11/08/2009 Permalink Reply

Yeah if you need WR do it, that’s a good one. I just dropped Roy Williams on the waiver a week or two ago because he is next to useless. After watching Jacobs today, he can never churn out that many points with Bradshaw right there- I am really going to consider a Forte trade if the person is still willing to do it. I wish Jacobs had TD’d when he came up 1yd short. I hope I don’t lose after Turner posting me 29 points. Thanks for the 2 points Megatron…sigh.

I missed Austin leaving the field- hope his injury isn’t bad for your sake

my bad was looking at Austin Collie leaving the field

Just read this comment this morning…and it scared the crap out of me! Good thing you meant Austin Collie though.

Again, before we get started with the questions, I just wanted to remind everyone that we’re running a contest for a $50 NFL.com gift card, which you can win by simply picking the quarterback who will score the most fantasy points this week. The entries will be cut off soon, so get your pick in quickly!

Anyways, here are our final Ask the Geek questions for week nine. If you have any more questions, you can leave them as comments on the post and hopefully some of our excellent readers can help you out (if we’re not able to get to them.)

    Shirley asks…

I have both Slaton & Moats in one league (non-PPR, start 2 RBs, one flex spot). Coach Kubiak announced that Moats would be the starter so should I start Moats and sit Slaton? My other RBs are Frank Gore, Ricky Williams and Beanie Wells.

would you start jamal charles or steve slaton? non ppr

      • Squish 1:24 pm on 11/08/2009 Permalink Reply

Charles for sure. Slaton lost the starting job for this week.

Brandon, I’ve got the Pats DST vs MIA or 49ers vs Ten. Who do you like? Thanks!!

      • Shirley 1:01 pm on 11/08/2009 Permalink Reply

I think you’d have a better shot with the Niners defense. It’s possible Chris Johnson might run up a lot of yards on you (not quite as much as he did on JAX) but I don’t think Vince Young will be able to do all that much against the Niners. But Nate Clements is also out so it decreases the Niners D/ST value a bit.

        • Squish 1:23 pm on 11/08/2009 Permalink

Play the 49ers. The Patriots just named their top two run stoppers inactive against a run happy team. Look for Miami to have a big day on the ground.

        • Squish 1:27 pm on 11/08/2009 Permalink

Scratch that, I read it wrong, Miami is the one losing their two best run stoppers. I still like SF though since they make more big plays.

    • Shirley 1:04 pm on 11/08/2009 Permalink Reply

Brandon, I can start 2 RBs and a RB/WR in a flex spot. I was already going to start Gore and have Williams as a flex but I was wondering whether I should start Moats or Slaton in the other RB spot which you answered for me. My only other WR sitting on the bench (that’s not injured or on a bye) is Laveraneus Coles.

      • Squish 1:24 pm on 11/08/2009 Permalink Reply

Moats is starting over Slaton this week so go with him.

        • Matt 1:56 pm on 11/08/2009 Permalink

Yep. I wouldn’t trust Slaton at all – he’s in the doghouse.

    • Squish 1:30 pm on 11/08/2009 Permalink Reply

Maroney becomes a new sleeper this week with Miami naming two of their best run stoppers inactive (LB Channing Chowder and DT Jason Ferguson). Get him in there if you still tossing up the idea of playing him or another second rate back/WR. He’ll be a great flex play this week.

    • Jones 1:40 pm on 11/08/2009 Permalink Reply

Westbrook is looking doubtful to play. How does that change your answer to me above? I also have Moats.

      • Squish 1:44 pm on 11/08/2009 Permalink Reply

I’m not one of the Geeks but given your time crunch I’d say take a chance on Santan Moss instead of Moats to replace Westbrook. Moats is a bit of a risk and Moss is playing in an offense that should have to pass a ton today.

        • Squish 1:46 pm on 11/08/2009 Permalink

Steve Smith is an even play too. NYG is struggling but he’ll be a reasonable play too. But definitely replace Westbrook. Who you replace him with is up to you but go with one of those two WRs. For reference, most have Steve Smith ahead in the projections.

      First off, some huge news!

“RB Steve Slaton has lost his starting job to Ryan Moats for Sunday’s game at Indianapolis, according to a report by ESPN citing coach Gary Kubiak. Slaton was benched last Sunday after losing his fifth fumble of the season.”
      (Yahoo! Sports)

      Secondly, some questions:

      Pick 1WR+1 Flex (PPR):
WR Santana Moss – Consistency issues
WR Hakeem Nicks – Not enough targets for my taste but gets a long ball or two per game minimum. Hurts that Manningham will likely play this week.
WR Devin Hester – His injury pretty much counts him out but he’s still an option for my team however bad
RB Laurence Maroney – Will definitely get the workload and NE should be ahead early…
RB Ryan Moats – Given the info above, could be more plausible than Maroney this week

      - Currently leaning Moss, and either Maroney (safe) or Moats (risky).

      Pick 1 QB:
Hasselbeck – Can’t beat Detroit for a matchup but will he be protected if Detroit brings the pain?
McNabb – Always plays well against Dallas and is definitely on a hot streak
Schaub – 3 of IND’s 5 starting DBs are out and they will be starting two rookie CBs. If ever there was a situation ripe for a big game it’s here. But is it worth the risk?

      - I’m leaning toward taking a risk on Schaub (mostly so I can root for him in multiple leagues)

Pick 1 WR (0.5PPR, 20 Return yards per point) :
Nate Burleson – He’s an undervalued monster in my book. Should get at least 4 for 60 and has a great matchup. Could get a few punt return yards as well
Mike Sims-Walker – Worth the risk? Should be good for 4 for 60 minimum. Definitely a flier.
Johnny Knox – Should get at least 75 return yards but no more than 4 receptions for 40. The question is will one of those receptions be a TD?

      - I’m definitely leaning Burleson for consistency but the other two are great options as well. Not too big a deal since I have a huge advantage in matchup currently with Rodgers, Rice, Pierre Thomas, Dallas Clark, Welker, Tynes and GB defense starting.

      Here’s a fun one. Pick 1WR, 1RB and 2Flex (standard):
QB Chad Henne – I’m not actually thinking of starting him.
QB Alex Smith – Technically QBs in standard formats score more points than other positions.
RB Ladainian Tomlinson – 2TDs last week. Back or not? Either way he plays the Giants defense.
RB Cedric Benson – Against Baltimore but for the most part I have faith.
RB Ray Rice – It’d be stupid to bench him after his role has increased.
WR Miles Austin – Reliance on long balls worries me.
WR Brandon Marshall – Not the best in his last two outings plus Polamalu is back.
WR Housh – Great matchup but how much will they need to pass?

      - Let’s just say it’s a weird freakin’ league. Currently leaning Benson, Rice, Smith, Austin but was wondering mostly whether to replace Smith or Benson with Tomlinson or Housh.

Pick 1RB, 1 WR and 1 Flex (standard 9 team league):
RB Ray Rice – God in a football uniform
RB Ryan Grant – Can’t beat the matchup even if an NFL team was playing a Europa team.
RB Michael Turner – only a normal matchup
      WR Colston -
      WR Welker
      WR White – injured?

      - Currently leaning Rice, Grant and Welker. WR slot is the real issue.

Anyway, didn’t want you guys getting bored tomorrow morning while waiting for games to start!

I was just thinking, with the holiday season coming up, a $50 NFL.com gift card would make a great present for any football fan out there. Coincidentally, we’re still running our contest to win a free one, so make sure to head over and pick the top fantasy quarterback of the week for your chance to win it!

Also, if you’re looking for some additional start/sit advice for this week’s games (maybe FFGeekBlog’s wasn’t enough for some crazy reason?!), try heading over to our friend the Fantasy Football Librarian’s site for some more suggestions.
