The Rams D/ST against the Bears? Seriously? Or is it just because you expect Cutler to throw a few picks?

      • Brandon 1:24 pm on 12/01/2009 Permalink Reply

Hah, yeah I should have put a disclaimer on that one. It’s only to be used if ABSOLUTELY necessary. I do expect Cutler to throw a few picks though, so that should get you 2-4 points from that.

        • beepdude 8:03 pm on 12/01/2009 Permalink

Which would you start in a wr/rb spot, Hightower against Min or T.O. against NYJ, in a non-PPR league, T.O. has stunk for most of the season but he seems like he is heating up

        • Shirley 8:21 pm on 12/01/2009 Permalink

I would go with T.O. simply because MIN’s defense is so much better than NYJ’s. I don’t see the Cardinals doing much against the Vikings.

        • beepdude 9:35 pm on 12/01/2009 Permalink

Thanks, I also have Hakeem Nicks vs DAL, would you consider him to be the better play over T.O.?

        • Matt 3:33 pm on 12/02/2009 Permalink

I don’t think you can sit T.O. right now. He’s been far more effective now that he’s got a coach who’s doing everything he can to get him the ball.

        • David 6:30 pm on 12/02/2009 Permalink

Respectfully, if the Jets secondary can reign in Randy Moss, they can do the same to T.O. The Giants are going to have to throw the ball this weekend in Dallas, I’d start Nicks.

        • David 6:31 pm on 12/02/2009 Permalink

Wow, that should have been rein in, not reign in. Yikes. It might be time to go home for the night!

        • Brandon 8:24 pm on 12/02/2009 Permalink

Hard to go with Hakeem Nicks over Terrell Owens, even if Darrelle Revis is on the job. Nicks has gotten about 5 points the past four games and doesn’t have the potential that T.O. has at this point. Just keep your fingers crossed!

Any preferences between Cincy and Denver? Both have sweet matchups. Cincy’s been a little dissapointing lately in terms of point production against weak teams.

      • Brandon 2:28 pm on 12/04/2009 Permalink Reply

Even though they haven’t quite lived up to the potential, I still like Cincy this weekend, at home, against the Lions. The Bengals are good against the run and should force Detroit to air the ball out, leading to a few interceptions I have to imagine.

        • Ken 3:45 pm on 12/04/2009 Permalink

yea i was leaning towards them too. but they dissapointed me in points the past two weeks. Just needed the little push. hah. Thanks!

  • The Wire - Week 13: The Hunt for the Playoffs

Here are our waiver wire candidates for week thirteen. As usual, you’ll find players who are either [Startable], a [Stopgap] to get you past a BYE or injury, [Worth a look] and spot on your bench, or [One-week-wonder]s who don’t warrant a roster spot, so you make your roster moves accordingly. You’ll also see the percent owned in parenthesis. With the playoffs rapidly approaching (only one week of the regular season left in my two main leagues,) many teams out there are probably in a “must win” situation this week. Hopefully some of the players below can get you a much needed victory and give you a chance at that championship trophy (or pride, cash, whatever else you get for winning a fantasy football league.) Anyways, let’s get to the waiver wire picks for this week, starting with a few wide receivers that could help your cause… (More …)

Wondering what you guys think about:
      - swapping Rock Cartwright for Fred Jackson (other RBs are Sjax, Wells, Forsett, Charles). I like Jackson, Rock has OAK in wk 14, but…not impressive Sunday, and unless Jackson is hurt vs TEN, probably wouldn’t start him then anyway….
      - Swapping one of my receivers (SmithNYG or Ochocinco?) for Chambers (also have Welker, Austin, SimsWalker). Now questioning whether to even start Ocho vs DET, he’s really stunk lately.
      - Which D/ST(s) are best to hold for rest of season, playoffs start wk14, can hold 2 if necessary: CIN, BAL, GB, DEN, BUF, ARI, ATL, SEA

      - we start 2 RB/WR, no flex, non ppr. Thanks, guys, your advice is always stellar.

      • Shane 6:13 pm on 12/02/2009 Permalink Reply

Keep Cincinatti and Green Bay on Defense.
For this week stay in the NFC West and start Sjax and Forsett. They have both been solid lately. At WR start Austin and SimsWalker.
Chambers wont pan out long run and FJack is more reliable moving forward. Anyone on Was is a tough start every week.

        • TJ 8:52 pm on 12/02/2009 Permalink

Thanks Shane, I didn’t have much faith in Rock, nice to hear it from someone else.

      • Brandon 8:38 pm on 12/02/2009 Permalink Reply

I’d grab Fred Jackson for sure, as it looks like he could get the bulk of the carries for Buffalo down the stretch. Cartwright plays for a Redskins offense that is just too terrible to rely on.

For your receivers, I’d stick with Ochocinco and Smith and start Ochocinco this week. He just complained about the offense not passing enough and I figure that will be worth at least a few extra looks.

Finally, for defense I agree with Shane, go with Cincinnati and Green Bay.

        • TJ 9:02 pm on 12/02/2009 Permalink

I guess you guys don’t think much of Welkers this week…… Now do you really think Cincy’s going to actually try to pass the ball vs Detroit Lately they seem to be saving Palmer’s arm for the postseason. MSW, Austin, and Ocho all look good this week, I can start 2…

        • Brandon 9:12 pm on 12/02/2009 Permalink

Oops, I was confused there. I thought you meant you were going to drop Ochocinco or Smith for Chambers. If you can only start two of those receivers, I’d go with Steve Smith and Mike Sims-Walker.

    • Rom3o 4:14 pm on 12/01/2009 Permalink Reply

Who do you think to start this week? Laverrneous Coles,Jason Avant, or Marrio Manningham? I already got Welker and Burleson starting

      • Brandon 8:35 pm on 12/02/2009 Permalink Reply

Go with Jason Avant, who should have a big day with DeSean Jackson possibly sidelined. If Jackson plays though, go with Manningham.

Need help have two weeks left to clinch playoffs and this week is my toughest match up. I need 3 WR, 2 RB, and 2 FLEX. Here are my players; Sims-Walker, Roddy White, Smith (NYG), Smith (Car), Crabtree, TO, Chambers, Hightower, Pierre Thomas, Norwood, and Larry Johnson.

Please help me out. With TO finally putting up good numbers and Chambers becoming KC’s number 1, I’m not sure who to start.

      • Dennis 9:55 am on 12/02/2009 Permalink Reply

        I also have Antonio Bryant.

      • Brandon 8:43 pm on 12/02/2009 Permalink Reply

At running back, go with Pierre Thomas and Jerious Norwood. For your receivers and flex, go with Mike Sims-Walker, Steve Smith (NYG), Roddy White, Michael Crabtree and take the gamble on Steve Smith (CAR). I know he was shut down last week, but he gets a match-up with Tampa Bay and even if Delhomme is out, backup Matt Moore has experience throwing to Smith and should look his way often.

    • Duncan 1:02 pm on 12/02/2009 Permalink Reply

I need to start two: Steve Smith (NYG), Chris Chambers, and/or Jason Avant.

It’s tough because while Avant has been putting up reasonable numbers and has great sleeper potential with DJax out it’s hard to start him over Smith or Chambers. On the other hand, Dallas’s pass defense has stepped up over the last few weeks (not to mention Eli’s struggles) and I’m still not sold on Chambers especially against a decent defense in Denver coming off a strong game and a few extra days of rest.

      Any thoughts?

      • Brandon 8:34 pm on 12/02/2009 Permalink Reply

Last time the G-Men played Dallas, Smith had a huge game, so I’d leave him in there and hope he can do the same. For your other receiver, I like Jason Avant this week as it appears DeSean Jackson will sit this one out.

      I’m sharing in Duncan’s dilemma…

To all: would you pick up D.Bowe or Meachem in exchange for S.Smith (NYG) or Cotchery?

      • Brandon 8:32 pm on 12/02/2009 Permalink Reply

Meachem is higher risk, but has a potential for higher reward over Cotchery. However, I’d stick with what you have just because Jerricho is still a number one receiver in the Jets offense. Also, what are the odds that Meachem, the teams third receiver, keeps catching touchdowns every game?! Stick with what you got.

Hi, I would really appreciate some help….

      Steelers or Saints Defense?
I need three: Benson, Slaton, Norwood, Pierre Thomas, Chris Brown
I need two: Calvin Johnson, Marques Colston, Pierre Garcon, Hakeem Nicks

Also I have Kurt Warner….if he cant play who makes for a better pickup Chris Redman, Vince Young or David Garrad?
      Thanks for the help!

      • Brandon 2:59 pm on 12/04/2009 Permalink Reply

Go with the Saints for your defense. They’ve been good and have a great match-up with a terrible Redskins offense. At running back, go with Thomas, Benson, and Norwood. For your receivers, start Calvin Johnson (as long as he’s playing, which it appears he should be at this point) and Marques Colston. Finally, for your quarterback, if Warner is a no-go, your best bet is probably Garrard against the Texans. Good luck!

Cutler (I know it’s tough, but bear with him for at least this one week!), Andre Johnson, Larry Fitzgerald, Sidney Rice (flex), Ray Rice, Rashard Mendenhall, and Antonio Gates.

Great team (besides Cutler,) by the way.

      Hey Brandon!

Running Short on RB’s this week due to Bernard Scott’s turf toe and Cedric Benson now playing. Should I drop him or does he still warrant a roster spot? My other RB’s are Ricky Williams and Brandon Jacobs, but I really think I need to bench Jacobs because he hasn’t done anything worth starting him so far. With Dallas as a matchup this week it isn’t worth the risk in my opinion. As far as RB’s available to pick up in my league, I have a choice between Felix Jones, Chris Brown, or Sammy Morris. I could drop Scott and pick up any of these RB’s for this week. What do you think? I need to start two RB’s Sunday and Ricky Williams will obviously be one of them.

BTW- Thanks for the advice on picking up Avant, Meachem, and Henderson last week as well as starting Donald Driver! Started Henderson and Driver which was good, but wish I would have started Meachum too! Breaston didn’t get crap and I forgot to check if Warner was out- oops! This week I think I will start Avant, Driver, and Meachum. Do you agree?

I won in my league last week too and beat the guy in 1st place! YEAH! Thanks!!!!

      • Brandon 2:33 pm on 12/04/2009 Permalink Reply

Hey Natalie, congrats on the victory! It’s probably safe to ditch Bernard Scott at this point. In terms of who to start at running back, he’s a bit of a risk, but I like Felix Jones. The Giants run defense isn’t that great and Jones has played very well the past few games when given the chances.

As for your receivers, it’s hard to guess between Henderson and Meachem, but go with what you have there (Avant, Driver, and Meachem) and you should do alright.

    • Patrick 4:16 pm on 12/04/2009 Permalink Reply

I have a big week this week and team is in shambles. I have to chose a WR and a WR/RB flex option. Players to choose from are cadilac williams, rock cartwrite, pierre garcon, and donnie avery. Not sure on which two should play here. Any help is appreciated

      • Brandon 10:19 am on 12/06/2009 Permalink Reply

I’d go with your two wide receivers, Garcon and Avery, who have much higher potential than the other two, who will be lucky to run for 80 yards or so.

  • The Titans are Terrifying

    Matt 12:32 pm on 11/30/2009 | 0 Permalink Reply
    Tags: , ,

Let’s just make it official: It’s time to throw out everything bad we ever said about the Titans this year. Earlier in the season, we frequently urged you to start your players against their defense and start your DSTs against their offense. No more. The Titans are the scariest team in football right now.

Vince Young’s previously fragile psyche was slowly nursed back to health by four straight solid performances in weeks 7-11, and yesterday’s 387-yard, 0-turnover performance and 99-Yard Drive Heard ‘Round the World prove he’s in a good place now. And he’s not even the best player on the team: Chris Johnson is easily the most dynamic playmaker in the league. (Anyone care to argue with that statement? I don’t even know how you can make a case for anyone else right now.)

Meanwhile, the defense no longer resembles the banged-up, ineffective unit that started the season: Over the past five weeks, the Tennessee D has been the second-best in fantasy football (using FFToday‘s base scoring), and are tied for third in sacks, third in interceptions, 12th in rushing yards allowed, and 16th in passing yards allowed. They’ve only got one really attractive matchup left on the schedule (at home vs. St. Louis in week 14), but they’re still worth picking up if you need DST depth (though it’s obviously not a great idea to start them this week at Indy).

All that said, I won’t be putting in a waiver claim for Vince Young any time soon. That isn’t a knock on him – I’m as impressed as anyone else with what he’s accomplished over the past five weeks – but I think true fantasy relevance is still a couple of years away for Young. He hasn’t had a multi-touchdown game yet this year, has never thrown for more than two TDs in his entire NFL career, and has three games with fewer than 175 yards this season (including a 116-yard performance in week 11). True, he’s capable of making things happen with his legs, but he has only one game this season with more than 30 yards rushing. I’d consider him a borderline QB2 in the week 14 St. Louis game, and that’s about it for this season, unless you’re in a keeper league.

I just felt like sharing a couple of my less-than-spectacular roster moves this week and give a forum to anyone else who felt like complaining…

In one of Matt and my “League of Champions”, where I have Steve Smith (CAR) as a receiver (so I was already at a disadvantage,) I had the awesome foresight to pick up Titans running back Chris Brown as a plug-in for the week. However, at the last minute I panicked and decided to leave in Jason Snelling instead. Snelling proceeded to score me an excellent -1.2 points! Adding insult to injury, I also had Felix Jones on my bench, but apparently thought the third-string Snelling was the smart play…awesome.

Similarly, in the Blogger League I picked up Bills running back Fred Jackson, but in the end decided to leave him and his two touchdowns on the bench (started Bernard Scott and Chad Ochocinco instead.) I also started Matt Ryan (0.6 points before his injury) in place of the concussed Ben Roethlisberger. Luckily this one didn’t matter much, as our opponent, [cough] Bruno Boys [cough], started Kurt Warner and Mike Wallace, amongst others.

I was also going to start Roy Williams but benched him and started Driver, good choices

Just accidentally discovered that I get NFL Network for free through Dec. 25 thanks to a Dish Network “free preview.” Did I miss a memo? No complaints, of course – especially since my Bills are on this coming Thursday and they finally found a way to win a game in convincing fashion for the first time this season.

Just thought I’d give a heads-up to any other Dish customers who, like me, had no idea they were running this promo. It’s channel 154.

Looks like Larry Johnson is poised to become the second second-rate RB to come alive in Cinci.

I can’t believe Houston blew that lead!

My rapidraft team had a great start to the week with the Packers defense (thank you mid-season defense hoarding!) . Then Schaub and Clark kept me on the board with big performances at their positions. Normally I’d be in great shape but with Benson out (my flex), I made the decision to play Shiancoe which looks to hurt me. Of course it’s not like I had a choice as my two replacements were Cadillac, Buckhalter, LJ, Coles, or Henderson. I’m crossing my fingers for s Shiancoe TD catch today. Looks like the week will come down to how well Chris Johnson finishes the day as he is the only ace up my sleeve. He needs to outscore what Forsett did earlier today for me to really gain any ground.

Sorry I wasn’t around to answer many questions this week but with Thanksgiving I didn’t have much access to a computer. I’ll be sure to get back on the horse next week!

As usual, I left off a few obvious picks from the list, including Ricky Williams running over the Bills, Larry Fitzgerald smoking the Titans secondary and Greg Jennings beating up on the Lions, but there is still plenty of picks to go around. Hopefully everyone has a great holiday weekend, filled with lots of fantasy football points!

I’d say Bernard Scott and Meacham/Cadillac.

Hey John, I have to disagree with Shirley slightly on this one. I agree with Bernard Scott (especially if Cedric Benson is ruled out again), but for your other spot I’d go with Laurence Maroney. I don’t trust Meachem against the Patriots defense, who has been pretty good at shutting down receivers this year.

how do you think Colston going to do?

        • Matt 4:20 pm on 11/26/2009 Permalink

Colston’s been facing a great deal of double coverage lately and has seen his red zone targets go to others (especially Meachem) who don’t get as much attention from defenses. Hopefully for Colston owners, defenses are soon going to realize that doubling Colston does little good since Brees isn’t particularly dependent on any one target. At this point, though, I’d consider him just a WR2 since Brees is more than happy to spread the ball around and take what defenses are giving him.

I have a good dilemma, I need to start two RBs: Bernard Scott (vs. CLE), Jason Snelling (vs. TB), Ryan Grant (vs. DET).

I’m tempted to go Scott and Snelling because Scott’s going up against the Brownies and Snelling did great against the Giants last week. BUT Grant IS going up against the Lions…

      • Dennis 11:12 am on 11/25/2009 Permalink Reply

I would only start Scott if Benson is going to miss another game.

        • Shirley 11:28 am on 11/25/2009 Permalink

Sorry for the confusion, the question was posed with the assumption that Scott and Snelling would both start. I also have Michael Turner and Cedric Benson on my team.

      • e-roc 1:20 pm on 11/25/2009 Permalink Reply

IMO, you have to start Grant v. the Lions… then sit back and enjoy your turkey, stuffing, and apple pie while the Lions get the stuffing beat out of them again on Turkey Day sans Megatron and Stafford..

        • Jon 1:34 pm on 11/25/2009 Permalink

Have to start Grant. Great game against Sanfrancisco and only will be better against Detroit. Has been coming on as the season progresses

      • Brandon 4:26 pm on 11/25/2009 Permalink Reply

I’d go with Ryan Grant and Jason Snelling out of the three. At least you know Snelling and Grant will get the bulk of the carries, while it’s uncertain how the split will be in Cincinnati, especially if Benson plays.

        • Johnny 10:23 pm on 11/25/2009 Permalink

Hasselback has a juicy matchup v. the Rams, but the Seahawks don’t play very well on the road… I think Smith has more upside and is a sneaky start this week at home v. the Jags.

Hey Dennis, if it turns out that Cedric Benson won’t play, go with Bernard Scott and Pierre Thomas. Otherwise, plug Steve Smith in there. At quarterback, I’d go with Matt Hasselbeck and hope for a repeat of his week one performance against the Rams (minus the interceptions.)

@Brandon – was this your way of answering some of my AtG questions? Haha. I guess I’ll be starting T.Jones and stashing McCoy, K.Smith and Mighty Mouse this weekend.

The Crabtree recommendation confuses me because I’m already wondering if Alex Smith > McNabb this week.

      • Brandon 4:18 pm on 11/25/2009 Permalink Reply

Hah, no actually, but hopefully it can start answering peoples questions anyways! Anyhow, if it makes you feel better, I’d still start Steve Smith over Michael Crabtree (maybe it confuses more?) I put Steve Smith as a Miss, when compared to other WR1 and WR2′s, while Crabtree is a Hit, when compared to other WR3′s.

In terms of McNabb and Smith, it’s hard to bench McNabb when the team is so pass-oriented. I’d stick with Donovan, even with a tougher match-up.

      K I have 2 questions this week.

First. Would you start maclin or cotchery?

second. Would you start Mendenhall or F. Jackson (they both have bad matchups)?

      • Brandon 4:10 pm on 11/25/2009 Permalink Reply

I’d go with Maclin, just because I think the Eagles will throw twice as much as the Jets (and twice as effectively as Sanchez!) At running back, go with Mendenhall, since there is still a chance Marshawn Lynch could play and steal carries from Jackson.

I actually made the same move in several leagues. Go ahead and drop Moss and he’s definitely useless this year. Breaston could still have a few big games in him and we know Chambers should be solid the rest of the year thanks to the lack of options in KC.

Thanks did it and also dropped Breaston while I was at it and grabbed Maclin. After seeing last week where they threw not one pass his way. So this is my team in a must win situation. 1 PPR League for week 12…who would you start at my 2nd RB spot?

Benson, Scott (I realize Benson if he is healthy but could you give me scenarios for which I should avoid either one – i.e. – they are going to split carries), Forsett, Cartwright, B. Wells, Fargas

I really can’t screw this decision up. I’m in a four-way tie with 3 other teams at 6-5. We currently occupy spots 3-6 if the playoffs started today (we only get 6 in out of 12 teams). The team I’m playing is also 6-5.

I think you have to wait to here what’s going on in Cinci. If Benson and Scott both play, Forsett may end up being a better play than either of them. If Benson doesn’t play, definitely play Scott. You’ll have to wait to make your decision.

I gotta go with Baltimore at Pittsburgh too. Pittsburgh has given up the most points in the league per game to opposing defenses by miles. The order of best teams to start a defense against goes like this:

      1. PIT (far and away the most productive team to play a defense against with teams playing against them averaging OVER DOUBLE their season average in defensive FP production)
      2. NYJ
      3. WAS
      4. DEN
      5. CLE/BUF (tie)

And the worst teams to date to start a defense against are:

      1. TEN
      2. SD
      3. IND
      4. CIN
      5. BAL

Interesting to note that team defenses are actually scoring below their season average against KC and OAK who most have pegged as a great teams to play a defense against. The season stats to date show otherwise. So definitely lower your expectations for Dallas and SD defenses this week, especially Dallas since they couldn’t force a turnover if it was given to them wrapped as a Christmas gift (at 12TOs forced this year they are tied for dead last with WAS)

On the other hand, it wouldn’t be wrong to expect good/above average performances out of the defenses of BAL, CAR, and NYG this week as they face the teams giving up the top 5 most fantasy points to opposing defenses (1st, 2nd, and 4th most respectively).

        • Matt 10:13 pm on 11/24/2009 Permalink

This is one limitation of the P2 theme I based our design on. The P2 theme is what enables us to have all these “live” front-page comments and other features that go above and beyond a normal blog, but it also interferes with a number of WordPress plugins that would normally let us do things like let users edit their own comments.

There’s good news, though – looks like WordPress just released a new version of P2 which fixes a lot of the issues with this one. I’ll probably have to wait until the offseason to upgrade, though, since I so heavily customized this one and will need to do it all over again after the upgrade. I wouldn’t want to make major modifications during the season, since this isn’t really the time to be exposing users to bugs and any other problems that might emerge.

        • Squish 9:00 am on 11/25/2009 Permalink

No rush, I’m so used to sounding like a babbling idiot because I don’t proofread my posts that it really doesn’t make too much difference.

I’ll look forward to trying out the new fixes next season ;)

BTW, you guys are FF only right? I’m just curious because I need to figure out what to do in the offseason still and I honestly decided I couldn’t last through another entire fantasy golf season if I tried. I guess fantasy Adirondack is an option again…

        • Matt 9:16 am on 11/25/2009 Permalink

Yeah, at this point we’re just FF, and I doubt that’ll change much… I can’t speak for Brandon but I know my sports knowledge is really NFL-heavy. I don’t even really like watching baseball or basketball to be honest, so I wouldn’t really be a great source of fantasy insight for either sport.

      - Andre Johnson, Nate Burleson, Donnie Avery, Brandon Gibson
      - Chris Johnson, Jamaal Charles, Ahmad Bradshaw, Mike Bell, Bernard Scott, Shonn Greene

Also, is old-man Warner okay or should I steal Leinart from the waiver pool?

At receiver, go with Andre Johnson (obviously) and Nate Burleson. At running back and flex, go with Chris Johnson (obviously) and Bernard Scott (as long as he gets the start.) At the flex spot, I’d take the gamble on Jamaal Charles.

As for Kurt Warner, they’re awaiting the results of some neurological tests before making a decision, so you should do the same. Who is your backup QB? He’s gotta be better than Leinart. Otherwise though, feel free to grab him at the expense of Shonn Greene just in case.

Hey guys – some early advice if you can, got to travel this week (Non-ppr).

      Need 2 each from:
      - Welker, Ochocinco, Sims-Walker, Smith-NYG, Austin
      - SJax, Forsett, Wells, Charles, Cartwright

D/ST: Hanging on to CIN for now, BAL, GB, DAL, ATL, SEA available, CIN should be ok vs CLE, but after the Oak game & CLeveland lighting them up earlier this year, now I’m not so sure.

And, the eternal TE debate: your advice on Shiancoe this SUnday was perfect, thanks!. Going forward, I’m tempted to pick up Boss (or possibly Finley), but right now Witten looks like a better drop than VS. If you happen to see the article on Lester’s Legend’s about productivity from the 3 “top” TEs, Witten’s trends compared to the other 2 (I think it was Gonzo & Gates) were disturbing, particularly the one about him being used for blocking in 46 pass plays vs under 10 for the other 2 guys – if Dallas’ O-line needs that much help, he may not be counted on for receiving much going forward. Any thoughts?

      Thanks again!!

      • Brandon 4:54 pm on 11/24/2009 Permalink Reply

Hey TJ, as usual, your receiver question is tough because you have so many good ones. This week though, I’d go with Wes Welker and Mike Sims-Walker. At running back, Steven Jackson and Justin Forsett (if he gets the start again…otherwise Rock Cartwright.) At defense, I like Green Bay against the Lions on Thanksgiving, especially with Matt Stafford and Calvin Johnson likely sitting the game out. Finally, for your tight end, it’s going to be tough to make a call/guess each week on who will do the best. Shiancoe is a solid option because Favre loves him in the redzone. I like Jermichael Finley this week against the Lions, especially after hearing news that the team has been (and will continue) lining him up in the slot as well to catch more passes. At this point in the season, Witten has become a five catch/50 yard guy with very little red zone targets. I doubt Boss will have any more two touchdown games this year and with all the options in the Giants passing game, he could be a bit inconsistent. Does this help at all?

        • TJ 12:45 pm on 11/26/2009 Permalink

Thanks, Brandon, you are always a help. Unfortunately, due to holiday travel & distractions, I was about 60 seconds too late to pick up Finley for the game, so I hope Shiancoe comes through for me again. Looks like Forsett will not be the starter this week, but Jones isn’t 100%….. still move to Cartwright, you think, or even Charles?

MSW is suddenly “questionable” for Sunday….what’s your take?

        • Brandon 8:41 pm on 11/28/2009 Permalink

Don’t worry about Sims-Walker, he’ll play. As for the running back, Charles has a really good match-up and is worth a start if Julius Jones ends up playing. Good luck dude!

I’ve got to credit both of these finds to my iPhone – more specifically, the fantastic (and free) Stitcher Radio app, which has a fantasy football channel. This is how I first encountered the ESPN Fantasy Focus podcast, which has become a regular companion on my dog’s nightly after-dinner walk.

focusFootball_v2_300Hosted by Matthew Berry and Nate Ravitz, Fantasy Focus is great once you get past the obligatory five-minute warm-up, which generally consists of personal anecdotes you won’t care about and jokes you won’t laugh at (no matter how many times you repeat the line, “That is factually correct,” it still isn’t funny). Thankfully, Berry and Ravitz more than make up for it with their knowledge of and obvious love for fantasy football – I almost always learn something important that I didn’t know before, and their enthusiasm is contagious.

A frequent guest on the show is Stephania Bell, an orthopedic clinical specialist and fantasy football geek whose blog is easily the most thorough resource for NFL player injury info. Definitely one to add to your feed reader.

I’ve been listening to Fantasy Focus for the past 2 years and I totally agree that their enthusiasm and love for fantasy is quite infectious. Also when you combine Fantasy Focus with ESPN Football Today, you’ve pretty much got the NFL covered from reality and fantasy.

        That is factually correct.

Here are our waiver wire candidates for week twelve. As usual, you’ll find players who are either [Startable], a [Stopgap] to get you past a BYE or injury, [Worth a look] and spot on your bench, or [One-week-wonder]s who don’t warrant a roster spot, so you make your roster moves accordingly. You’ll also see the percent owned (in Yahoo! leagues) in parenthesis. All I can say about the cast of characters on this week’s list is that hopefully you don’t have to rely on them too much…otherwise you’re in big trouble.

Hey all: I am thinking about picking up kevin boss and dropping antonio gates. I am reading that the giants are going to keep looking toward the tight end more while it appears that the chargers are not. What do you think? rob

      • Matt 8:49 am on 11/24/2009 Permalink Reply

I definitely wouldn’t drop a TE with 52 receptions for 709 yards in order to pick up one with 24 catches for 359 yards. Gates might only have two TDs, but Boss just has four. If defenses adjust and key in on Boss the way they often do on Gates, Eli’s just going to go to one of his many, many other options.

If Calvin Johnson actually plays, then I’d go with him, even with Daunte Culpepper likely to start. However, it looks like Johnson won’t be playing either at the moment, making your decision a bit easier :-)

      • Brandon 4:03 pm on 11/24/2009 Permalink Reply

Feel free to ditch Earl Bennett and Nate Washington (especially with Vince Young at quarterback.) While Washington has found the endzone recently, his upside isn’t high enough to warrant the limited catches he gets each week. I’d actually drop Todd Heap as well so you could grab Meachem, Avant and Snelling (if only to keep other teams from getting him for the time being.)

No other receivers off my waiver wire list is a free agent in your league? Coles, Wallace, Henderson, etc?

        • Natalie 4:57 pm on 11/24/2009 Permalink

I had Coles in the draft and dropped him (dumb now I know) and someone else picked him up. Wallace is unavailable, but Henderson is available.

Oh, and which do you think most will try and pick up? I think Snelling so should I go for him first or get a receiver for sure?

        • Brandon 3:39 pm on 11/25/2009 Permalink

Did your waivers already clear? Grab Snelling for sure if you have a chance and Henderson as well. You can drop Bennett and/or Washington for them.

Should I try to get Rock Cartwright or Bernard Scott?

I have Ryan Moats on my bench on a team with Gore, Ricky Wiliams, Beanie Wells & Slaton. Since Moats didn’t do anything last night, I’d like to replace him with someone to compete with Wells and Slaton for the possible flex slot.
Or should I also drop Wells so that I can get both Cartwright and Scott?

      • Shirley 1:13 pm on 11/24/2009 Permalink Reply

Oh and I just noticed that Justin Forsett is available. I’m thinking he should be at the top of my list? His next 3 games look pretty good (STL, SF, HOU).

        • Brandon 3:59 pm on 11/24/2009 Permalink

Hey Shirley, I’d keep Beanie Wells, since you know he’s going to see action every week. As for the other guys, Rock Cartwright will start for the Redskins for the rest of the year, as long as he’s healthy, so he’s probably the best add of the group. Justin Forsett and Bernard Scott both have good match-ups on the horizon, but it’s not quite clear what the status of Cedric Benson or Julius Jones are at this point. Keep on eye on the health of those two, as they would make excellent plays if they are named the starters. Long story short, if you need to make a waiver move, the safest is to drop Ryan Moats for Rock Cartwright, with your backup waiver claims being Bernard Scott and Justin Forsett.

Hey Brandon, should I start Lesean McCoy vs. WAS or Kevin Smith vs. GB (in a PPR League)?

LeSean has an easier matchup & I feel as if Philly will build an early lead & feed him the rock! Smith catches more passes, & puts up decent #s in our PPR League. Everytime I bench Smith, he inevitably finds the endzone & puts up big #s. I realize Stafford & Megatron may be on the shelf, which would allow GB to load the box & key in on Smith. Do you see any reason to start Smith over McCoy?

      Thanks

      • Brandon 3:41 pm on 11/25/2009 Permalink Reply

I honestly have no reason to start him…although I’d prefer you could start someone other than LeSean McCoy instead! However, I’d definitely go with McCoy…if only so you don’t have to sit and stare at a bad score from Smith all the way until Sunday.

I am a little concerned with Mcnabb this week. I just picked up Alex Smith. Should I start him over Mcnabb. All common sense tells me no, but the way that the skins held him down last time, I am not sure

      • Brandon 7:54 am on 11/29/2009 Permalink Reply

I know common sense (and a lot of other experts) tell you to go with McNabb, I’m leaning towards Alex Smith actually. The Jaguars defense is a heck of a lot worse than the Redskins at slowing down opposing quarterbacks and the last time McNabb faced Washington, he had one of his worst games of the season. I know the Eagles will throw a lot, but I’m thinking the 49ers will as well and Smith could be in for one of his three touchdown games.

    • Lindsay 2:40 am on 11/26/2009 Permalink Reply

SO I am concerned about all my positions this week. I have Romo as my QB and he has been seriously lacking the past 2 weeks. My B/U is Orton, but I don’t really want to play him either. I could pick up Hasselback or A. Smith?

Also for receivers, I need 3, I have Colston, Smith (nyg), L. Evans, Collie, Meacham, Floyd, Bess…I can also get D. Avery of the FA list.
For RBs I need 2…I have R. Williams(obvious), Forte, R. Cartwright…there isn’t anything on waivers or the FA list except J. Lewis, C. Taylor, K. Faulk and Buckhalter.
I also need a flex option from the above names.
I am in a PPR league, so that is the only consolation for Forte since he catches passes more than he runs!
And for defense I had Arizona, but am looking to pick up another one…Atlanta or Seattle? THX a bunch!

      • Brandon 8:00 am on 11/29/2009 Permalink Reply

Sorry we didn’t get to this before the Thursday games Lindsay, but who did you end up playing? I’d start Rock Cartwright over Matt Forte if that is an option. At receiver, go with Marques Colston and Donnie Avery if you can get him still (I’m assuming you already played Steve Smith? For your flex spot, go with Matt Forte and hope he has another 8 catch, 120 yard performance to compliment his 30 yards or so he gets on the ground. For your defense, go with Seattle against Kyle Boller and the Rams for sure.

        • Lindsay 1:04 pm on 11/29/2009 Permalink

No problem…I know you guys are busy…Thx for the response though. I did end up playing ROmo and thankfully he did well. I also played Smith. I picked up Avery but couldn’t get him in my lineup in time, so hopefully both Meacham and Colston pull some good numbers, cause those are the other WRs I have in my lineup besides Smith. I also used Seattle, so we’ll see how that goes too. Thx

Here is the fantasy football “Team of the Week” for week eleven, listing the players that scored the most points (using standard scoring) over the course of Sunday’s games. While last weekend’s Team of the Week featured the regulars (Brady, Chris Johnson, Peterson, Randy Moss, etc), this weekend featured some of the most unlikely performances of the season. You know the fantasy world has been turned on its head when the first name you read on this list is Matthew Stafford! Anyways, let’s get to the list…a list which contains players that were possibly on A) someone’s bench or B) free agency…

    Pos.

QB Matthew Stafford (DET) 422 passing yards, 5 TD, 2 INT
RB Ricky Williams (MIA) 119 rushing yards, 19 receiving yards, 3 TD

Yeah, tough one there. Hard to predict Smith would have over 100 yards receiving (and a touchdown!) On the ground, it tied for his third worst rushing performance of the season.

Didn’t realize until now that McCoy still had 99 yards and a score (but a fumble too.) Hard to complain too much about that performance from your RB2.

I don’t think there’s any question now: The “problem with Brady” early in the season was simply the lack of Wes Welker’s services.

    • Brandon 7:22 pm on 11/23/2009 Permalink

In case you were wondering, the most likely situation in tonight’s game is Chris Johnson hurting himself on the first running play, fumbling the ball, then Matt Schaub throwing for 400 yards and 5 touchdowns. At least that’s what I need to happen for me to win in one of my leagues! :-)

I think you have to start Thomas Jones every week. Same goes for Frank Gore when he’s healthy (which he is).

Ward’s going to eat the Chiefs alive and do it with a goofy grin (because he does everything with a goofy grin). I like Housh in the other spot – the Seahawks are doing everything in their power to get him the ball, and that’ll be doubly true against the Vikings, who tend to force opposing offenses to pass more than usual.

Throughout most of his NFL career, I wouldn’t have cared a whole lot whether Reggie Bush played or not. However, now that I actually have him on my best fantasy football squad AND because he’s actually putting up decent numbers these days, I’m very nervous about the thought of him not occupying the W/R spot on my roster this weekend. It’s looking more and more like it’s heading that way too, with Reggie nursing a knee bruise. Not helping the situation is the fact that the Saints are undefeated and have no need to risk injuring one of their most dynamic players any further. Keep an eye on this situation until he’s ruled out for sure, but with such an enticing match-up against Tampa Bay, I won’t be happy if he takes the week off.

Does that mean Bell becomes a decent option, or do you think PT still sees the majority of carries? (have Bell on my Bench)

      • Brandon 9:58 am on 11/22/2009 Permalink Reply

I still think the PT Cruiser sees the bulk of the carries. Mike Bell and Reggie Bush are very different in their skill sets and the fact that Bush is out just means other receivers will see the ball more often…not necessarily that Mike Bell will. It all depends on your other options though.

As a pt owner, I won’t be happy if he takes off… I’ll be ecstatic!

Bush is now officially out for the game. He didn’t get on the plane with the rest of the team.

Tight ends, I think I’m going with Celek over Shockey this week, Good Idea? I have to pick up another RB, Options are Shonn Greene, Donald Brown or a couple others, but I don’t know who, most of them 2nd backs to the starters, any suggestions? thanks Jason

Stick with the hot hand and go with Celek. He’s got three touchdowns in three weeks and has a good chance at a fourth this week. As for your running back options, I’m not high on Shonn Greene, who hasn’t done anything since his huge week seven game. Brown hasn’t done much of anything either with all his injuries and the fact that Addai still gets the bulk of the carries. None of the big pick-ups this week are available (Bernard Scott, Jason Snelling, Justin Forsett?)

Here’s to hoping that Mike Wallace holds down the flex spot for me in Reggie’s absence!

Not that it has any impact on fantasy football at this point, but it appears that the Buffalo’s recently-made-backup quarterback Trent Edwards could be on his way out of town soon. I just imagine him signing with a UFL team, then, along with J.P. Losman, causing the league to fold as everyone realizes that quarterbacks not good enough to play for the Bills are starting for half the league’s teams.

  • Update: How valuable is Ricky Williams from here on out?

A followup to yesterday’s post on Ricky, where I concluded:

What it all boils down to is this: tonight is huge for Ricky Williams owners. Carolina’s defense is fairly representative of the kind of mediocre opponent Ricky will get to face from here on out. If he goes out there and parties like it’s 1999 (when he was 22), I think we can all agree that he’ll belong in that top tier with the rest of the elite fantasy RBs for the rest of the ‘09 season. If Carolina shuts him down, we’ll know that Ricky can’t hack it on his own, and his owners had better hope the Dolphins can find a free agent capable of doing a halfway decent Ronnie Brown impression for the rest of the season.

22 carries for 119 yards (5.4 YPC), two rushing touchdowns, and two receptions for 19 yards and another touchdown all add up to a pretty convincing argument: Ricky’s an elite RB1 for the rest of 2009. Like I pointed out yesterday, the Dolphins are built to run the ball, and the schedule is very favorable, with zero matchups against tough run defenses until week 17 (PIT).

Maybe you’re a little biased because you have him in one of our leagues? Just sayin’.

I bumped him up to top 10 after Ronnie Brown got put on the IR. He has more value than Ronnie Brown has ever had this year because he is the sole RB and it’s no longer a committee. With the 10th most favorable RB schedule of all RBs, and being on a run happy team, he has a chance to really put some points up. I wouldn’t be at all surprised to see him finish top 5 on the year.
