More notes from the preseason

As the Olympics started with bang last night (and as I write this, we already lead in the medal count!), the NFL preseason kept rolling with a few more games. Here are a few of the notable stats from those exhibitions:

  • Oakland 18, San Francisco 6: The only thing interesting/relevant to the fantasy football world in this one was the play of the Raiders three-headed monster at running back, which didn't disappoint. Justin Fargas (5 rush for 25 yards), Darren McFadden (12 rush for 48 yards) and Michael Bush (8 rush for 27 yards and a TD, plus 2 catches for 29 yards), lead the team, which rushed for a whopping 248 yards. The team only passed for a bit over 100 yards and JaMarcus Russell didn't look that sharp. It looks like the Raiders are going to be a run first team for sure, so expect a big dose of all three running backs this season, making all three draftable in some form. However, it does bring up the question of whether any of them will get the touches to be a top tier running back this season, but maybe that will change as the preseason continues. For the 49er's...no one played well, even Frank Gore (2 rush for 6 yards), so stay away from this sinkhole until further notice.
  • Pittsburgh 16, Philadelphia 8: Good play from the quarterback position in this one should have you feeling good about targeting either Donovan McNabb (10/13 for 97 yards and a TD) or Ben Roethlisberger (2/2 for 38 yards and a TD) in your draft. While Brian Westbrook sat out of the game for the Eagles, the running game also looked good for the Steelers, as Rashard Mendenhall rushed for 34 yards on seven carries and Willie Parker rushed for 20 yards on three carries. Also of note, rookie wide receiver Limas Sweed of the Steelers looked good in his debut, catching three passes for 23 yards, while Santonio Holmes caught a 19 yard touchdown pass. Keep an eye on Sweed throughout the preseason, as he could make for a nice sleeper pick late in your draft it it turns out that he is targeted consistently by Steelers quarterbacks.
  • Seattle 34, Minnesota 17: So they didn't end up getting Brett Favre, but maybe the Vikings won't need him this year as quarterback Tarvaris Jackson (8/11 for 118 yards and a TD) seems to be making some strides already this year. He already seems to take a liking to recently acquired receiver Bernard Berrian, who caught two catches for 43 yards, and should be a guy you look to target in the middle of your draft as a value pick that could pay some big dividends. For Seattle, Maurice Morris rushed six times for 62 yards, while Julius Jones (4 rush for 15 yards) failed to impress in his first game as a Seahawk. The Seahawks seem alright at the quarterback position, where starter Matt Hasselbeck went 7 of 8 for 70 yards and a touchdown, while backup Seneca Wallace went 15 of 20 for 165 yards and three touchdowns.
