In case you hadn’t heard the news yet, recently the Denver Broncos top receiver, Brandon Marshall, was injured in a freak “fast food bag” incident. According to Stats.com:

Marshall could miss up to four months of off-season preparations after slicing his right forearm in a freak accident. Marshall said he slipped on a fast-food bag Saturday while wrestling with family members at a Florida resort and put his right arm through a home entertainment center.

In a statement, Broncos head athletic trainer Steve Antonopulos confirmed reports Marshall “sustained right forearm lacerations to one artery, one vein, one nerve, two tendons and three muscles.” Marshall might be ready to resume football activities in time for the start of training camp in late July.

We’re going with a somewhat more refined, cleaner look for our second season (which, by the way, is only 179 days away, not that I’m counting). Things seem to be working OK at the moment, but I’m sure we’re bound to run into problems in the near future. We’ll try and work out the kinks before the hordes of people Googling fantasy football cheat sheets zOMG start to show up around late July.

P.S. I know this has nothing to do with the topic of this blog but holy wtf the intarwebz are asploding!

  • Mock draft roundup

It’s still ridiculously early, but there are already a few published mock drafts for next year’s fantasy football season out there…

NFL.com: I find quite a few nits to pick with this one. One could certainly argue for Tom Brady as the top overall pick, but despite the terrible year for tailbacks that 2007 was, I’m still taking Tomlinson with the top pick. They’ve got A-Pete 2nd, and while he’s plenty tempting, I’ll take the sturdy LT over a guy as injury-prone as Peterson any day. Ronnie Brown (12) goes too late; I’d grab him mid-1st-round for sure. Same with Joseph Addai (8) – what in the world did he do this season that would make him anything but a top-5 pick?

The Hazean’s mock first round: Now this is more like it. Every pick makes sense to me. The only things I’d change would be to bump Addai (3) above Peterson (2), and to drop Peyton (8) down to 10 or so, which would slide Gore and Lynch up. To be honest, I really wouldn’t draft him in the first round at all this year. I truly believe he and Harrison had something special, and since Harrison doesn’t seem likely to ever be the threat he once was, I think Peyton’s numbers, while they’ll continue to be pretty great, won’t ever reach those astronomical 2004 levels again. • 2008 NFL Mock Draft - count us in

The Hazean is hosting a mock draft, and we’re bravely taking on the role of the Mangenius in this one. The Jets are one of those teams that has so many different needs, I think it’s almost pointless for them to target any specific position. They can use the help all over the field. The defense, though, was even more pathetic than the offense, so my instinct is to go for the best defensive player available when the #6 pick comes up. Chris Long would be the best-case scenario since he’s got the most experience in a 3-4. Vernon Gholston’s been jumping up draft boards lately and Mel Kiper’s got him as the Jets’ first-round pick on his mock draft. Sedrick Ellis and Glenn Dorsey are the other obvious names here, but I highly doubt that Dorsey will fall to #6, and Ellis isn’t a great fit in a 3-4 (though I read things like this and wonder if it matters).

Some positions I’d rule out right away in the first round:

    • Wide receiver: The Jets are OK with Coles and the Cotch Rocket for another year.
    • Running back: Unless McFadden’s available. You’ve gotta at least consider him. But this O-line is so bad, I don’t know that he’ll make much of a difference.
    • Quarterback: I like Kellen Clemens a lot. Don’t forget that he was in the running for the 2006 Heisman until he broke his ankle. Pennington, if he can stomach it, will serve as a better-than-average backup.

Jake Long’s the only OT worth taking at the #6 spot, but he won’t fall that far. Too many teams have a desperate need at that position, most notably the Rams (#2) and Chiefs (#5).

  • My finals matchup

If you’re not interested in my personal fantasy football situation, skip this post. Brandon’s got some info you can actually use in his waiver wire report for week 16. I find it easiest to get a handle on a fantasy situation I’m in when I explain it to someone else, and hey, what luck – I’ve got a blog on fantasy football! Crazy how these things work out sometimes. Details on my finals matchup after the jump.

As the fantasy football season is quickly drawing to a close, I just wanted to say a quick thank-you to our readers who have made our first season of blogging a whole lot of fun. When we started this blog, we didn’t know if anyone would care about what we had to say, and we definitely had no idea that we’d wind up with thousands of readers every week. Your participation and feedback in the comments and the Ask the Geeks columns have made this a whole lot of fun.

If you like the blog, are into betting on sports, and are feeling in the holiday spirit, we’d be really pumped if you signed up with one of our new sports betting affiliates. They’ve got some nice bonuses for new clients, and they give us an affiliate fee if you sign up after clicking on one of the offers below. So if you’re thinking about betting on the Super Bowl or something anyway, it would be awesome if you helped support our blog along the way. We’ve also got one for poker thrown in there for good measure.

If you’re still live in your playoffs, best of luck. If not – well… happy holidays! Thanks again for visiting. We’ll be posting throughout the rest of the fantasy playoffs, and we’re planning on posting regularly with news and updates during the offseason as well.

  • We keep winning things somehow

I was pretty pumped about our Draftmix Blogger Challenge victory a few weeks ago, though I have to admit feeling a little bad about winning something like that in our first season of blogging. Now I get word that the folks who run the Carnival of Fantasy Sports were nice enough to award the top prize to one of our posts in the first edition of their competition.

I’m really pleased to have our blog recognized, and even more pleased that it was one of my posts that took home the gold, and not one of Brandon’s. I believe the wisdom of Jack Black is particularly well-suited to this occasion: "Woohoo! I win! I win! One to nothing!"

  • What is going on in Oakland?!

    Brandon 4:22 pm on 11/13/2007 | 0 Permalink Reply

Can anyone explain to me why JaMarcus Russell is not the starting quarterback for the Oakland Raiders right now?

The Raiders are 2-7, with their final games @ MIN, @ KC, DEN, @ GB, IND, @ JAX, SDG. The chance of the team winning any of those games except the Minnesota one (since Adrian Peterson will not be playing) is about 0%. Daunte Culpepper has proven that he is not the answer. Josh McCown…DITTO (at least I think he has proven this…apparently coach Lane Kiffin doesn’t agree). You can see their stats for the season below:

Josh McCown: 59.5 QB rating, 5 TD, 9 INT, 8 fumbles (2 lost), completing 58.2% of his passes and throwing for 152 yards/game
Daunte Culpepper: 73.3 QB rating, 4 TD (plus 3 rush TD), 4 INT, 6 fumbles (2 lost), completing 56% of his passes and throwing for 163.4 yards/game

  • Year of the running back?

    Brandon 8:51 pm on 11/07/2007 | 0 Permalink Reply

If you were/are the owner of Ronnie Brown, Deuce McAllister, Travis Henry or Rudi Johnson (to name a few), you know that this season’s running back field has been hit hard by injuries and suspensions. Because I have fantasy squads with a few of those players, and because it’s around the half-way point in the NFL season, I decided it might be interesting to compare the top running backs around draft time this year with the actual rankings going into Week 10. This is what I discovered…

    Rank Draft Average Current
    1 LaDainian Tomlinson Adrian Peterson
    2 Steven Jackson Joseph Addai
    3 Larry Johnson LaDainian Tomlinson
    4 Shaun Alexander Brian Westbrook
    5 Joseph Addai Ronnie Brown
    6 Frank Gore Marshawn Lynch
7 Rudi Johnson Marion Barber III
    8 Brian Westbrook Clinton Portis
    9 Willie Parker Willis McGahee
    10 Laurence Maroney Reggie Bush

Note: Yahoo! rankings used for this comparison.

  • LaDainian Who?

    Brandon 9:37 am on 11/05/2007 | 0 Permalink Reply

For a weekend that was supposed to be completely dedicated to the Patriots vs Colts showdown, a certain running back did his best to steal the spotlight. As many websites are stating, Adrian Peterson was on a "Viking Quest" to break the single game rushing record…and he succeeded.

Adrian Peterson (RB-MIN): 296 rushing yards, 3 TD

Peterson broke the previous record of 295 yards, which was held by Jamal Lewis. Let’s also note that Adrian Peterson becomes the first rookie to rush for over 200 yards twice, as well as the first player to rush for over 1000 yards in his first 8 games. Peterson completely stole the show, making the opposing team’s running back, MVP LaDainian Tomlinson, nothing more than a footnote in the game summary. Apparently, Lewis took offense to this accomplishment and was determined to put up some head scratching stats of his own:

Jamal Lewis (RB-CLE): 20 attempts, 37 rushing yards, 4 TD, 4 receptions, 67 receiving yards

While averaging less than 2.0 yards a carry, Lewis managed to score a touchdown once every five times he carried the ball.

These weren’t the running backs to put up some amazing fantasy stats this weekend however…

Sorry, but before I go into football related topics, I have to give a shout out to the Boston Red Sox for their World Series victory last night. With a 4-3 win, they swept the Colorado Rockies for their second World Series Championship in four years. With most of their talent expected to return next season…do I hear DYNASTY?!

Not to be outdone though, the Patriots went out and completely destroyed the Washington Redskins 52-7. Fifty-two to seven?! Are you serious? While not the greatest team the NFC has to offer, the Redskins were supposed to be a solid team that could "match-up" well with the Patriots (or at least that’s what I heard at least one commentator say). Letting up fifty-two points is not matching-up well with anyone.

Tom Brady (QB-NE): 306 yards passing, 3 TD, 14 yards rushing, 2 TD
