Fantasy Game of the Week: SD @ NE

After stomping the New York Jets at home last week, you would think that the talk around the NFL would be how the Patriots are clearly the Superbowl favorites this season. Apparently though, due to a little on-field espionage incident, everyone is focused on how bad of cheaters the Patriots and coach Bill Belichick are. Not that they shouldn't be focused on it, but it takes away from a matchup that should be billed with as high a regard as last week's Indy/New Orleans game was supposed to be. That's alright...the players won't care who's videotaping who once they're on the field and we should be in store for a good one at Gillette this weekend.

Proceed With Caution - weak plays for week 2

Welcome to the first edition of yet another weekly feature (see what we're up to here? Hey, on a completely unrelated note, did you know it's free to subscribe and have our genius bequeathed unto you automagically via RSS or e-mail?). These are the guys who you probably consider to be start-worthy, but I'm telling you that it might be worth taking a look at your bench and seeing if you have another guy you can plug in instead. Essentially, I'm here to introduce doubt and anxiety into your life. You're welcome.

Ask the Geeks

Cory: Week 2 and beyond I have Romo, Big Ben and Donovan McNabb as QB options. Who should I go with week 2 and beyond? Who should I dangle as trade bait?

Brandon's take: For week 2, you're going to want to start Tony Romo. Although you probably can't expect another 5 touchdown, 300+ yard performance from him again, he should put up solid numbers against a Miami team that was beaten by Jason Campbell last week. McNabb would usually have been the pick here, but given his 184 yard performance against Green Bay last week, it's hard to recommend him until he has at least one solid game under his belt.

Is it the Kellen Clemens era in NY?

It appears that Chad Pennington is taking a seat for the team's next game against the Baltimore Ravens and I can't say I blame him. First of all, he just got abused by the Patriots and was boo'ed by the home crowd when he tried to hobble off the field to save the team from using a time out (usually considered a noble thing to do, but apparently not to the New York fans). His ankle is no doubt still hurting from how painful it appeared on Sunday. Secondly, his next game is against the Baltimore Ravens. I'm pretty sure the last thing he wants is Ray Lewis ripping his head off as he tries to limp out of the way. He'll gladly "pass the torch" for this game to the young Clemens. Nothing bad can really come out of this for Pennington, as Clemens will be made to look like crap against Baltimore, Pennington will be able to heal, and the fans will want a QB that can lead them to victory the week afterwards when the Jets play an easier Miami defense (can you say "Pennington to the rescue!").

My first impressions of ScreamingSports.com

Screaming SportsScreamingSports is a relatively new web site for sports fans and fantasy sports players in particular, which I actually am only aware of because their banner started appearing on this blog today (our advertising is all context-sensitive and managed by Google's algorithms; we never know what'll show up there and are often amused by what does). According to TechCrunch, this is the niche they're aiming to fill:

Cut Your Losses: Week 2

Every week, I'll be letting you know which borderline players I think have dropped so far in value that they are no longer relevant in the world of fantasy football and seem unlikely to become worthy of a roster spot again this season. As we've only got one week of information to go on so far, there aren't many guys who fit into that category yet, but there are a few...

3, 2, 1...Brady Quinn!

The Cleveland Browns took the first step to getting Brady Quinn under center when they traded week 1 starter Charlie Frye to the Seattle Seahawks yesterday. Now all that lies in the way of Quinn's promotion is the poor play of Derek Anderson against a surprisingly good defense of the Cincinnati Bengals (last week at least). This whole situation is becoming quite a mess for Cleveland and coach Romeo Crennel (who I don't predict lasting beyond this season unless Quinn proves to be the savior that the team has been looking for). It was obvious that Frye was not the answer, as it is obvious that Anderson is not either. It's time to start Brady Quinn and see what he's got...who cares if he takes a beating.

Week 2: Waiver-Wire Pickups, Keeper Sleepers and Spot Starts

Now that the first week is over, you may find that your team isn't in quite the same shape that you thought it was to begin the season. You might have lost a player to injury or realized that your veteran might not be playing at the same level he has in the past. You might realize that your player just won't be a good fit for the new team he's playing on or you might just want to start planning for next year (with a keeper league Post-Draft Draft). In any case, my new weekly post should help you out in these areas. I'll provide a list of good waiver-wire pickups that should be able to help you out throughout the season. I'll also provide a list of the recent players that you might want to start looking at for the future of your keeper league team. Finally, I'll provide a list of a couple players that will make good bye week or injury plug-and-plays to get you from week to week. So here we go with the Week 1 selections...

The Great (fill in the blank), coming to a field near you!

Over the weekend, I was checking on one of my rosters after the 1:00 games had finished and noticed that one of my starters had gotten me ZERO points. I was confused at first, as this player was supposed to be the number one wide receiver on a pretty decent passing team. Quickly I thought to myself, maybe they play at 4:00 or something. After checking that, I was wrong. Deion Branch had played the entire game against Tampa Bay and finished with 0 receptions for 0 yards. I then started to notice a trend of some pretty high caliber players pulling off great disappearing acts on my other rosters or on the rosters of other teams in my leagues. Below you will see a list of these players that went AWOL, along with my immediate analysis of whether or not this will be a continuing trend to be worried with, or something to shake off and give them another shot in Week 2...

We're so stupid, we're so smart

Really, you can predict damn near anything before week 1 of the regular season and it'll sound at least plausible. But once the games actually count and coaches turn past page 1 of the playbook, you quickly learn that what you said in the preseason can easily sound downright retarded after week 1.
