Proceed With Caution - Weak Plays for Week 5

These are the guys you might normally start, but may want to reconsider this week for one reason or another. This week, let me start out by saying this: I seriously almost decided to add Steve Smith to the list this week, simply because with David Carr throwing the ball, he's just plain screwed. Carr sucks - SUCKS - and so will Smith, DeShaun Foster, and every other part of that offense as long as Carr's running the show.

Five potential fantasy shockers this week

Every week in fantasy football for as long as it has existed, there has always been one constant: Some player comes out of relatively nowhere, has a gigantic, multiple-touchdown game, becomes the league's hottest waiver or trade commodity, and then generally sinks back to his normal level of production the following week. If you could predict who that guy would be each week... well, you'd have a lot of trouble convincing your friends to let you into their fantasy leagues. So it's a good thing that I'm probably going to be way, way wrong here, but here goes: These are the five guys who I think could shock everyone with a monster game this week.

The Frerotte era in St. Louis?

Although it is obviously not the "Gus Frerotte Era" in St. Louis, it will be Frerotte's team for the next couple weeks while Bulger rides the pine, trying to heal some of his wounds (broken ribs, sore knee, hurt shoulder, etc). Bulger has been a sitting duck the past few weeks with the offensive line in disarray, something you don't want to say about a quarterback your team just gave a huge contract extension to. Frerotte has been a journeyman throughout his career and has proven to be a decent backup in his time with Washington, Detroit, Denver, Cincinnati, Minnesota, Miami, and now St. Louis, but he's probably most famous for his self-caused concussion while playing for the Redskins.

Cut Your Losses: Players to Drop, Week 5

As always, here are the guys who have outlived their usefulness completely in shallower leagues, and should be at least heading toward your chopping block in deeper leagues.

Waiver-Wire Pickups, Keeper Sleepers and Spot Starts: Week 5

Let me warn you that when you read the names on the Quarterback section of this column, you're going to start laughing. I make no promises on the success of these players, but they have a chance to help your team in some way or another. As for the WR and RB's though, they should make solid additions to your team, so here are your waiver wire, spot start and keeper sleeper alerts for week 6...

We're so stupid, we're so smart: A look back at week 4

  • I declared that Lee Evans is to be considered nothing more than a spot start from this point on, but that one of those spots was in week 4 against the Jets. I've got 72 yards here who say I was right.
  • Brandon said that Andre Davis "should be a satisfactory 3rd receiver for your team if you’re looking for a spot-start." 117 yards and a TD is more than satisfactory, if you ask me.
  • Brandon said that Roddy White "should fill in nicely as a third WR for the remainder of the season." 64 yards is just OK for a #3 WR, but he looked like the #1 target again and should continue to put up decent numbers.
  • Of Daunte Culpepper, Brandon said: "Although at first I’d eye him as a spot-start quarterback, keep him in your sights in case he starts playing well." If you viewed last week as a spot to start him in, you're a lucky son of a bitch and I hate your dog.

Some things we've learned today

Ronnie Brown has the talent to be a #1 fantasy RB. Now it's just a matter of whether he can maintain the motivation to perform to his potential all season on a bad team.

I likes me some Ronnie Brown

This is why you don't trade guys on the basis of two bad games. It looks like Cam Cameron's Jesse Chatman bluff is paying off; Brown's finally running like a man with a job to lose.

Walker, Ward: Out

In case you were too lazy to check our Injury Report (or any site's report for that matter), you need to be aware the Javon Walker and Hines Ward are both OUT this week. Both are suffering from knee injuries and will be unavailable for this week, so look for an immediate replacement. On their respective teams, the players that will benefit the most are WR Brandon Marshall (woot! woot!), WR Brandon Stokely (Denver) and WR Santonio Holmes, TE Heath Miller and WR Nate Washington (PIT). Let's see how my boy B. Marshall performs as the number one receiver in the offense...maybe he won't give it back to Walker! As of now, both Walker and Ward are expected to play next week, but check back to see their status after this weekend.

Ask the Geeks: Week 4

Chris asks: Okay guys I'm stuck... My 3rd round pick this year was Drew Brees (unfortunately) and my backup is J.P. (once again unfortunately). Brees has a bye week next week and so I have no one. I am in a keeper league that charges $$ to pick up players. My options are Favre, Harrington, Pennington, and Edwards. What advice do you give me for my disaster QB position. I'm thinking about picking up two QBs and spending about $8 between the two.

Matt's take: I don't really see Harrington or Edwards as viable fantasy options right now, so cross them off the list. I'm surprised Favre's still available, and he's the obvious pickup if you can get him; he looks better now than he has in years (though I'm still waiting for the other shoe to drop and for him to throw four picks in a half). Pennington's an option against Buffalo in week 4, but most weeks you wouldn't want him in there.
