Ask the Geeks

Chris:Who would you give the nod to this weekend, Jerricho Cotchery or Santana Moss as my #3 WR?

Matt's take: Moss is hard to judge and tends to occasionally explode with a huge game, so I can't blame anyone for starting him on a weekly basis, but the 'Skins offense looks gawdawful at this point. While the Miami defense's weak spot is its secondary, they will be able to double-team Moss because he's the only viable downfield target on the team. Miami's offense is just as bad as Washington's; this has all the makings of a low-scoring, grind-it-out affair that won't favor a big-play receiver like Moss.

Fantasy Game of the Week: NO @ IND

As the beginning of the 2007-08 NFL season begins tomorrow, and due to the fact that tomorrow's game has so much relevance to fantasy football, we've decided to publish a new weekly article called "Fantasy Game of the Week". This article will not necessarily focus on the most relevant game in terms of the standings or playoff races. It will analyze the game that will have the biggest effect on the fantasy world. An example of this would be, maybe...New Orleans vs. Indianapolis. In fact, I can't think of another match-up that could take place that would have more fantasy relevance.

Ask the Geeks

Now that the fantasy draft season is just about over (except for you very pathetic people who couldn't get it together before week 1 and will be starting your seasons late), you can throw your cheat sheets out the window and focus instead on the day-to-day mechanics of maintaining a solid fantasy squad.

Patriots take a couple hits on defense

A few months ago, the Patriots defense looked primed to be one of the top defenses in the NFL. Asante Samuel would return after his almost Pro-Bowl season. Adalius Thomas was brought in from Baltimore to add some spark to an aging linebacker core. Rodney Harrison was finally healed and expected to play the entire season after missing portions of the last two years with injuries. Add coach Bill Belichick's master defensive scheming to the mix and you have the forming of a perfect defensive storm (a good version though...not this one).

Bears TE Greg Olsen: Knee just a sprain

Olsen didn't look so hot leaving the field on Thursday, but it sounds like he'll be OK. That said, the fact that he'll be rehabbing a injury for a while, and splitting time even when he's healthy, takes some of the luster away from this potential sleeper.

Let's get this season started!

Only three nights left till the moment you've been waiting about 7 months for...opening day of the 2007-08 NFL season. What a game it should be too, with enormous fantasy implications as the New Orleans Saints visit Indianapolis to battle the reigning Superbowl champ Colts. Just some of the names you'll be watching: Peyton Manning, Reggie Bush, Joseph Addai, Marques Colston, Marvin Harrison, Reggie Wayne (need I say any more?). With almost everyone's fantasy drafts over at this point, here's a couple recent updates to players that may be on your roster:

Platoon in Miami?

Apparently, backup running back Jesse Chatman has been really stepping it up this preseason. He's averaging 6.4 yards per carry on 18 attempts, while Ronnie Brown is only averaging 3.1 yards per carry on 27 attempts. While Brown will most likely start the season as the starter, this situation is looking closer and closer like a platoon in the making. With question marks surrounding Miami's entire offense this season, you might want to drop Ronnie Brown down a couple spots on your cheat sheet, as losing some carries will obviously not help his cause.

A few player updates worth noting

Seahawks DEF: DT Marcus Tubbs is out for the season with a torn ACL, so if you have the Seattle D, drop them now. Seriously? Yeah, seriously:

Attention IDP league players: Harrison suspended four games

I don't do IDP. I don't see defensive players as being consistent enough, nor their stat categories interesting enough on an individual basis, to make it worth my time. Football (the American kind, not the kind where you're supposed to writhe in pretend agony on the turf every time you make contact with another player), as I'm sure you've heard many times, truly is the ultimate team sport, and that's even more the case on the defensive side of the ball. For sure, there are some individual players, your Urlachers, Strahans, and Ray "Probably Killed a Guy" Lewises out there who are interesting from a fantasy standpoint, but by and large I just think IDP sounds pretty boring.

What's with the green dot on QB helmets?

I was wondering this myself, but my mighty google-fu found the answer for me. As a service to our readers for whom the force is not as strong, I present the knowledge you seek (from here):
