  • First fantasy football team of the year and draft results

As I mentioned previously, last night was my first fantasy football draft of the year, as I traditionally sign up for a Public league as soon as Yahoo opens for sign-ups. Anyways, I just wanted to share the team I ended up with. You’ll notice this league has an interesting twist, as it’s a 12-team league with no Defense or Kicker, but with extra position players. I’ll add some analysis later this evening if I can, but just know that this draft was done with a beer, no cheat sheets and the primary purpose of giving people an idea of how the drafts might go this season…

So naturally I had to sign up for a league with a live draft…TONIGHT! The league is named “only the best2″, so the assumption is that I have my work cut out for me. My team name for the year will be Real BrandonMarshall, since Yahoo cuts the name off at 20 characters and Will the real Brandon Marshall please stand up? wouldn’t fit.

At first glimpse, a few of the changes Yahoo! Fantasy Football has implemented this year include:

    • Message Board update e-mail notifications – Could be useful for leagues with very little trash talk, so you don’t have to constantly check when no one is posting any messages. Might end up being annoying for leagues where there is constant chatter though.
    • Emphasis on Team Slogans – For some reason there’s a whole tab devoted to Team Slogan changes, in case you were someone who enjoys that kind of thing. Currently, I have mine set to “Whoop. There it is.” Quoting the classic Jock Jams tune.

I’ll attempt to update this list as I navigate the site a bit more, but will definitely have it updated once the draft is over.

Update: Here’s the draft room. Same as last year if I’m not mistaken…

  • 2010 NFL Draft starts tonight!

In case you’re living under a rock, we just wanted to remind you that the first round of the NFL Draft is tonight, with the second and third rounds on Friday, while the final rounds will be on Saturday. Here’s hoping the Patriots put their 12 draft picks (four in the first two rounds) to good use. There are a lot of holes to fill and the Jets and Dolphins aren’t taking it easy this off-season!

P.S. I’m still trying to decide how I feel about the Patriots signing Torry Holt. Hopefully he’s not the next Joey Galloway!

It’s a sad day when a player with your name (you’re obligated to root for him right?) is traded to a division rival of your favorite team :-( There’s no way I will be buying a Brandon Marshall – Miami Dolphins jersey!

Anyways, I have to think that this move makes Chad Henne a viable fantasy quarterback next season…although it would still be best to have him as a back-up until you see what he’s capable of with a serious wide receiver in the mix. The Broncos passing game is downgraded tremendously unless Eddie Royal can figure out how to play football again. Poor Brady Quinn…just when he thought he might have a chance to succeed.

Why would the Jets let a fairly-productive Thomas Jones go and then sign LT? Tomlinson has mentioned publicly that he’s OK with being a third-down specialist…something the Jets already have with Leon Washington! Am I missing something here? Thomas Jones could have split carries with a potentially fragile Shonn Greene, while Leon Washington handled third down duties. If they get LT now, they get an aging running back who will split carries with Leon Washington on third down? Please explain.

P.S. Hello, Patriots? Instead of just watching a bunch of your guys leave in free agency, how about you make some moves to help a team with some serious holes at this point?!

With all regular season fantasy football leagues now finished, Matt and I just wanted to thank all of our great readers for their comments and for helping us reach record traffic levels for a third straight year. We already have plans at a site redesign this offseason, so hopefully the site is even better with the next revision. If you have recommendations for next year, please feel free to reply to this post and we’ll add them to the list of potential changes for the next version of the site. Hopefully everyone held their own in their league and maybe even a few of you won thanks to some of our advice. To everyone who continues feeding their addiction with some playoffs fantasy football, good luck…and to everyone else though, we’ll see you next season!

Just a few of the early INACTIVES reported by NFL.com

    • Michael Turner (ATL) out; Jason Snelling makes a solid play against the Bills and their NFL-worst run defense
    • DeAngelo Williams (CAR) out; Jonathan Stewart will get a ton of carries.
    • Nate Burleson is out.

Here are our waiver wire candidates for week 16. As usual, you’ll find players who are either [Startable], a [Stopgap] to get you past a BYE or injury, [Worth a look] and spot on your bench, or [One-week-wonder]s who don’t warrant a roster spot, so you make your roster moves accordingly. You’ll also see the percent owned in parenthesis. With your league championship in sight, I’ve simplified the list a bit this week, as I figure there is a lot less competition for the top waiver wire players this week. If you have any additional questions though, please feel free to ask away and I’ll try to get them before the end of the day so you can finalize your roster as soon as possible. Good luck!

  • Team of the Week - Week 15: Jerome Harrison.

Here is the fantasy football “Team of the Week,” listing the players that scored the most points (using standard scoring) over the course of Sunday’s games. This week you’ll notice a few oddities about the list, the first being the existence of two quarterbacks, both who kicked some serious behind and who couldn’t be left off the list. The second is the existence of Jerome Harrison, who rushed for an insane 286 yards (the third highest single game rushing total of all time!) Anyways, with the Monday Night Football game yet to take place (New York Giants @ Washington Redskins) this list may be a bit premature, but here is your team of the week nonetheless…

    Pos.

    Stats

QB-A Ben Roethlisberger (PIT) 503 passing yards, 7 rushing yards, 3 TD
QB-B Aaron Rodgers (GB) 383 passing yards, 22 rushing yards, 3 TD, 2-pt conversion
RB Jerome Harrison (CLE) 286 (!!!) rushing yards, 12 receiving yards, 3 TD
RB Maurice Jones-Drew (JAX) 110 rushing yards, 30 receiving yards, 2 TD
WR Vincent Jackson (SD) 108 receiving yards, 2 TD
WR Steve Smith (CAR) 157 receiving yards, -6 rushing yards, 1 TD
WR DeSean Jackson (PHI) 140 receiving yards, 9 rushing yards, 1 TD
TE Dallas Clark (IND) 95 receiving yards, 2 TD
    K Matt Prater (DEN) Kicks – 20-29 (2), 30-39 (0), 40-49 (1), 50+ (1), PAT (1)
DEF Baltimore 7 points allowed, 2 sack, 4 interceptions, 2 fumble recoveries

Here are our “Hits” and “Misses” for this week. I didn’t have much time over these past few days, so right now all you have to go on are the players names, their opponents and your good faith in the FF geeks. Tonight or tomorrow I’ll try to add some descriptions to explain my picks a bit more. Remember to leave any hit/miss questions you have as a comment on this post (or any other post for that matter) and good luck!

  • Thursday Night Football: IND @ JAX

Although everyone probably already knows (but just in case!), the Colts head to Jacksonville to play the Jaguars on Thursday Night Football tonight. For at least this game it seems that Indianapolis doesn’t plan to do sit any of their stars (unless the score gets lop-sided early I assume.) This means it’s pretty safe to keep Peyton Manning, Reggie Wayne and Dallas Clark in your line-ups as usual. I’m not as confident with Joseph Addai though, as he’s had injury troubles in the past and the team may be more apt to get him to the bench early to ensure he’s healthy down the stretch.

For the Jaguars, Maurice Jones-Drew could have a tough go of it, but you can’t really bench him unless you have an running back corps and can replace him. Mike Sims-Walker has a pretty decent match-up with the Colts coming off a game in which they allowed a 21 reception, 200 yard, two touchdown performance to his old UCF teammate, Brandon Marshall. No one else on the roster is really up for consideration, so I’ll leave it at that. Good luck!

This weekend I have a semi-final match-up with one of my fantasy football arch-nemesis’s and definitely need a win. I figured I’d run the rosters by our readers and see if they could help boost my confidence…or not. Either way, I’m just curious what everyone thinks.

Here is the fantasy football “Team of the Week,” listing the players that scored the most points (using standard scoring) over the course of Sunday’s games. This week’s team is led by the man who shares my name, Denver Broncos receiver Brandon Marshall, who broke the single season record for receptions with 21 in a losing effort to the Colts. Anyways, with the Monday Night Football game yet to take place (Arizona @ San Francisco) this list may be a bit premature, but here is your team of the week nonetheless…
