Here are our waiver wire candidates for week nine. As usual, you’ll find players who are either [Startable], a [Stopgap] to get you past a BYE or injury, [Worth a look] and spot on your bench, or [One-week-wonder]s who don’t warrant a roster spot, so you make your roster moves accordingly. You’ll also see the percent owned in parenthesis (and if you see an asterisk by the players name, it means they’re on a BYE this week.)
Before we start, don’t forget to enter in our contest to win a $50 NFL.com gift card!
This week the talent is really starting to fall off the cliff, with the only real interesting additions to the list being Texans’ running back Ryan Moats and Chargers’ receiver Malcom Floyd…but even they don’t raise all that much excitement. Anyways, here’s the guys that are still available out there in case you’re in desperate need of help at a position. Hopefully you don’t have to rely on these guys too much!
Quarterbacks
- [Worth a look] Mark Sanchez, NYJ (48%) – Everyone loved Sanchez’s “poise” when he started the season, but now I’d say the word to describe him is “INCONSISTENT.” He’s more of a keeper league prospect at this point.
- [Worth a look] Alex Smith, SF (34%) – He didn’t get three touchdowns again this weekend and probably won’t very often, but I guess he’s a possibility if you’re really in a bind at the position.
- [Worth a look] Vince Young, TEN (14%) – Just someone to watch and see how he performs as he gets back into the swing of things. By no means should you start him.
- [Stopgap] Matt Hasselbeck, SEA (76%) – Coming off the BYE, Hasselbeck had another solid performance (like week 5, NOT like week 6!) and is worth a start if your QB is on a BYE.
Running Backs
- [Worth a look] Beanie Wells, ARI (75%) – Wells had a rough go of it last week, but he is getting at least 50% of the carries for the Cardinals and that number should increase as the season goes on.
- [Worth a look] Jamaal Charles, KC (61%) – With the suspension of Larry Johnson, Charles will take over as the staring running back in Kansas City. Just remember, it’s Kansas City.
- [Worth a look] Ryan Moats, HOU (37%) – He was the top scoring RB of last weekend, but don’t expect that to ever happen again. Moats will probably get carries (especially if Slaton fumbles early again), but he is a risky play unless the team commits to him as the starter.
- [Stopgap] Mike Bell, NO (76%) – He was outperformed by Pierre Thomas last night (and Reggie Bush got the red-zone score!) but Mike Bell will still get carries for an explosive Saints offense and is worth a spot start here and there if you’re in a tough spot.
- [Stopgap] Laurence Maroney, NE (70%) – Maroney scored in the two games leading up to the BYE, but besides a long run in the snow against the Titans, he hasn’t been all that effective. He might be worth the risk this weekend though if you need someone to fill-in for Adrian Peterson or something…just don’t expect him to match A-Pete’s numbers!
- [Stopgap] Correll Buckhalter, DEN (67%) – He’s losing more and more carries to Knowshon Moreno, but Buckhalter is still the tailback of choice when it comes to the passing game. He’s usually good for around 10 points or so if you’re in a bind.
- [Stopgap] Jamal Lewis, CLE (61%) – Bad team, but he gets the bulk of the carries…he just can’t seem to find the endzone this year.
- [Stopgap] Justin Fargas, OAK (36%) – Owned in only a third of the leagues out there, Fargas is putting up better numbers than Jamal Lewis and actually found the endzone last week! However, he plays for the Raiders…
- [One-week-wonder] Maurice Morris, DET (4%) – Filling in for Kevin Smith, Morris did alright…but it was against the Rams. When Smith returns, Morris has no fantasy value.
- [One-week-wonder] Leonard Weaver, PHI (1%) – Take away his 41 yard touchdown scamper last weekend and you’ll get the type of numbers you can expect from Weaver while Brian Westbrook is out.
- [One-week-wonder] LaRod Stephens-Howling, ARI (1%) – He had a touchdown, but the real reason he’s on here is because his name is awesome.
Wide Receivers
- [Startable] Jeremy Maclin, PHI (69%) – Maclin is clearly the number two receiver in Philly at this point and should be owned in nearly all leagues (especially keeper leagues!)
- [Startable] Mike Wallace, PIT (54%) – With Ben Roethlisberger throwing the ball better than most quarterbacks in the league, his number three receiver is putting up solid numbers as well. He only catches two or three balls a week, but he turns those into 50-70 yards and is good for a touchdown every once in a while. I especially love Wallace in keeper leagues.
- [Worth a look] Lance Moore, NO (63%) – After two straight sub-par games, it’s hard for me to say anything good about Moore, but I have a feeling he’ll make a late-season push and put up some decent numbers down the stretch.
- [Worth a look] Malcom Floyd, SD (15%) – With Chris Chambers being cut from the team, Malcom Floyd takes over as the starter alongside Vincent Jackson. In last week’s game (his first game as a starter) he had two catches for 64 yards. I think you can expect a bit more production from him over the rest of the season, as he gets more comfortable with Philip Rivers.
- [Worth a look] Mike Thomas, JAX (5%) – Thomas now has 11 catches for 107 yards in the past two games AND he’s been handling some kick/punt returns. Probably not a good start quite yet, but someone to keep an eye on.
- [Worth a look] Sammie Stroughter, TB (5%) – Like Thomas (above), Stroughter is a double threat, getting some looks at receiver, as well as some action in the return game.
- [Stopgap] Antonio Bryant, TB (60%) – He is getting healthier as the weeks go by, but with a new (rookie) quarterback, he’s an even more risky play now.
- [Stopgap] Patrick Crayton, DAL (57%) – Worth a lot more in leagues that award for kick returns, but he’s the fourth or fifth option in the passing game at this point.
- [Stopgap] Laveranues Coles, CIN (36%) – He had a touchdown in two straight games heading into the BYE…let’s see if he can pick up where he left off.
- [One-week-wonder] Ted Ginn, MIA (40%) – Unless your league awards points for kick returns (where he is pretty nasty!), Ginn seems to have been completely phased out of the Dolphins passing game.
- [One-week-wonder] Deion Branch, SEA (8%) – Branch is the fourth or fifth option in the Seahawks passing game.
Tight Ends
- [Worth a look] Fred Davis, WAS (15%) – With Chris Cooley out, Davis will be the primary recipient of the passes that would have went his way. He ended up 78 yards and a touchdown on eight receptions and is someone to keep an eye on…and who could possibly start for your team against Atlanta in week nine.
- [Worth a look] Joel Dreessen, HOU (2%) – Like Davis and Cooley, Dreessen will be the Texans’ replacement for Owen Daniels.
- [Stopgap] Zach Miller, OAK (65%) – He’s JaMarcus Russell’s #1 target in the passing game, but he still plays for the Raiders and should only be used in an emergency.
- [Stopgap] Tony Scheffler, DEN (50%) – Coming off the BYE, I expected Scheffler to pick up where he left off…where he was putting up big numbers and seemed to be one of Orton’s favorite targets. However, he did not live up to expectations and seems to be an inconsistent play at best.
- [Stopgap] Dustin Keller, NYj (47%) – Keller obviously has talent, but he only has two games all season where he caught for over 31 yards. He’s a risky play, but maybe you’re willing to roll the dice.
- [Stopgap] Kevin Boss, NYG (30%) – Boss is in the same boat as Keller (above.)
- [One-week-wonder] Daniel Fells, STL (3%) – He catches one or two passes a game (three of which have now gone for touchdowns), but he’s no where near consistent enough to be in your line-up.

@Brandon – In a non-keeper, would you rather own Cotchery, Maclin, or Wallace?
Brandon 4:23 pm on 11/03/2009 Permalink |
I think Maclin has the most upside of that group. He’s liable to put up a crappy game every once in a while, but he’s getting plenty of looks each game and has big play potential.
Amir 4:07 pm on 11/03/2009 Permalink |
I was reading some blogs on ESPN and it said Kevin Walter might be the biggest benefactor with Owen Daniels going down — any thoughts on that? and do you think hes worth going out there and trying to trade for?
Matt 4:22 pm on 11/03/2009 Permalink |
I wouldn’t say that it definitely means Walter’s production will increase. Sure, Schaub will be paying more attention to him, but so will opposing defenses. Walter’s been extremely inconsistent throughout his career, so I don’t think the loss of Daniels is going to make him a fantasy star or even a reliable every-week starter. If you’re thinking of him as a backup and bye-week plugin then yeah, he might be a slightly better one of those with Daniels gone.
Squish 8:49 pm on 11/04/2009 Permalink
A lot of people seem to think that someone always benefits when a great receiver goes down. I find this to be a poor thought process. If anything a team obviously gets worse when a guy goes down. Some other player may get more targets than normal but the chains won’t be moved like normal.
I mean, did you see any viable benefactors arise in Detroit while CJ was out? Any big benefactors in NE because Welker was out (well Edelman had 1 good game I guess).
I don’t see Walter doing much this week either way and you’ll know more about his role next week and you’ll still be able to pick him up. If you already have him then feel free to hang on. Problem is AJ and Slaton are still the most targeted active players on the team. I don’t see that changing.
Glory Hog 7:21 pm on 11/03/2009 Permalink |
@Brandon: Should I trade: Frank Gore/Glen Coffee/Jerome Harrison for Mendenhall/Lesean McCoy/Derrick Mason?
It’s a non-ppr league and I have:
RB: Deangelo Williams, Mike Bell
WR: Randy Moss, Greg Jennings, Brent Celek, Percy Harvin
Brandon 4:48 pm on 11/04/2009 Permalink |
I like this trade. Basically you’re trading Gore for Mendenhall, McCoy and Mason…sounds like a good deal to me! Gore is solid, but won’t get you a whole lot more points from week to week than Mendenhall and the rest of the guys are just a bonus.
Squish 8:52 pm on 11/04/2009 Permalink
Watch out here. You are getting the obvious better deal but… backups tend to be a hot commodity down the stretch since they frequently start during playoff weeks. I’d say go for it but only because Harrison will be useless regardless of whether he start or not and because McCoy should start during the playoff weeks. Mendenthal is near equal value for Gore so you won’t lose much there. I’d say go for it.
GloryHog 7:29 pm on 11/03/2009 Permalink |
In a Non-PPR league that starts 2 RB, 2 WR, 1 FLEX, should I trade:
Frank Gore/Glen Coffee/Jerome Harrison for Mendenhall/Lesean Mccoy/Derrick Mason.
I have at RB: Deangelo Williams, Mike Bell
I have WR: Randy Moss, Gregg Jennings, Brent Celek, Percy Harvin

Just can’t wait for the start or sit thread!
Brown, McCoy, Wells, Moreno.
Need 2
what would you do?
GloryHog 12:23 am on 11/04/2009 Permalink |
Moreno, Brown
Brandon 5:24 pm on 11/04/2009 Permalink |
I agree with Glory Hog…go with Ronnie Brown and Knowshon Moreno.
apk42 6:19 pm on 11/04/2009 Permalink
Even though Ronnie is @NewEngland?
Squish 8:56 pm on 11/04/2009 Permalink
Brown is a wild card this week since nobody really knows how NE will stack up against the wildcat. that being said, if you have him you pretty much must start him. I’d say stay away from Moreno as he’s not even the primary back in Denver in terms of touches and he’s facing the second best run defense in the league.
I’d play Brown and McCoy if McCoy starts and Brown and Moreno if he doesn’t.
apk42 9:27 pm on 11/03/2009 Permalink |
re: Hey Ya’ll
(ronnie brown)
Squish 8:57 pm on 11/04/2009 Permalink |
See my post above. Don’t sweat Brown’s matchup. NE’s giving up an average of 110 yards on the ground (17th) from week to week.
Mal 8:28 am on 11/04/2009 Permalink |
Hey guys I’ve got Jacobs Turner Portis as my RB (have to start 2 each week) and being offered Forte for Jacobs- thoughts???
Jacobs splits carries which is painful and Forte doesn’t? I think? However Bears struggle? hmmm?
B Cole 9:20 am on 11/04/2009 Permalink |
That’s funny, I was just about to offer that trade to someone. Jacobs has a much easier schedule down the stretch — only top 10 run defenses he faces are the Broncos and Vikings (in wk 17). Forte on the other hand goes up against the Vikings twice, the 49ers, the Cardinals, the Packers, and the Ravens and, given the way Forte’s been playing, I’d prefer Jacobs.
Mal 10:56 am on 11/04/2009 Permalink |
Thanks for your input B, I did notice that- it’s just so painful with Jacobs splitting carries 50/50 with bradshaw and I was livid when bradshaw took the goal line carry when it was jacob’s drive =[
Mal 10:58 am on 11/04/2009 Permalink |
yeah very valid point- Jacobs splitting 50/50 with bradshaw is killer + losing that goal line carry on the weekend when it was jacobs drive was cut throat- i was livid!
Matt 11:22 am on 11/04/2009 Permalink |
Tough call Mal. I’d lean toward Forte just because of my preference for feature backs. If it’s a PPR league, then I think Forte’s the clear pick. The matchups do stink for Forte going forward, but I still think he’ll be more consistent down the stretch.
B Cole 12:55 pm on 11/04/2009 Permalink
Matt,
What if it’s not a PPR league?
I am trying to get rid of Forte while his rare double-digit performance is fresh in everyone’s minds. How would you compare him to, say, Marion Barber? Who else would be a reasonable one-for-one?
Matt 2:38 pm on 11/04/2009 Permalink
@B Cole – It isn’t a bad idea to shop Forte around this week after a big game. I wouldn’t give him away for Barber, though. In our non-PPR League of Champions, Forte has 78 fantasy points to Barber’s 72, and Forte’s ceiling is higher given that he gets his hands on the ball more than Barber (16.9 carries per game vs. 14.3 for Barber) and more importantly has crossed the 25-carry threshold twice this season, while Barber has had 15 or fewer carries in all but one game.
If you’re going to trade him, do it now – he’s not likely to look good against the tough Cards rush D. But get something better for him than Barber.
Matt 2:46 pm on 11/04/2009 Permalink
Also, remember that the Bears offense is still figuring itself out with Cutler at the helm. They’ve got some talented pieces but haven’t put it all together yet. A blowout win over a JV team like the Browns might be exactly what the doctor ordered. Forte’s performance is 100% tied to the offensive line figuring out the whole pass-protection thing, thus allowing Cutler to be Cutler, thus forcing defenses to respect the pass, thus opening up some room for Forte to operate. I’m relatively confident that just by virtue of time and experience, the offense will look better in the second half of the season, and Forte’s numbers will improve.
Mal 7:03 pm on 11/04/2009 Permalink
Apologies for the double post the first one said there was an error so I thought it didn’t post :S
As for Forte-Jacobs this is a real doozy and some of those comments Matt I hadn’t considered but are very relevant. Being in Australia I haven’t caught a Bears game on tv all year so I haven’t seen Forte truck it up in the flesh either.
It’s a non PPR league- what are your thoughts Brandon?
Squish 9:03 pm on 11/04/2009 Permalink
I’m still not touching Forte with a 10 foot stick. He has a horrible playoff stretch and should be benched the whole way. For most leagues his final 3 match-ups are GB, @Balt, Minn. Trust me when I say you don’t want any of that. My grandma is a better start during that stretch.
meany1413 1:04 pm on 11/04/2009 Permalink |
Hey guys
I’m once again stuck on who i should start at wide receiver this week. I have steve smith (nyg), Brandon Marshall, Derrick Mason, Mike Sims-Walker, Steve Breaston and Jeremy Maclin. I need to start 3. What do you think? Thanks
Squish 9:12 pm on 11/04/2009 Permalink |
I’d have to say Marshall, Mason and MSW (as hard as it might be to start him again). Maclin is a flier but he doesn’t get the amount of targets the others do. Breaston is only really viable on your team if Boldin or Fitz are out and they look to be healthy again for the most part.
Brandon 2:42 pm on 11/05/2009 Permalink |
I agree with Squish here, go with Marshall, Mason and Sims-Walker. Steve Smith is a close fourth, but he has a tough match-up against the Chargers and I think the Giants will rely heavily on the running game this week.
meany1413 8:22 pm on 11/05/2009 Permalink
Thanks for the advice guys
LT 8:07 pm on 11/04/2009 Permalink |
Hey Brandon/Matt! I survived week 8 (thanks btw), a very, very close one. I need help on my flex spot (non-PPR)… my options are:
Ryan Moats (one week wonder???)
Ricky Williams
Steve Smith (NYG)
Austin Collie
A. Bradshaw
Thanks!
Squish 9:07 pm on 11/04/2009 Permalink |
I gotta go with Ricky Williams there. Steve Smith is a roughly equal play but in equal situations you always go with the RB since they are guaranteed more touches.
LT 2:24 pm on 11/05/2009 Permalink
thanks man!
Brandon 2:44 pm on 11/05/2009 Permalink |
I agree with Squish. Steve Smith is a close second, but I don’t like his match-up this week (although honestly I hope Ricky Williams has a bad day, as he’s playing the Patriots!)
Stone 10:21 pm on 11/04/2009 Permalink |
I’m offering to trade Barber + (L Coles, K Walter, or M Wallace) for any Tier 1 receiver. This will leave me with no backup RBs to R Rice and M Turner. Good idea/bad idea? Welker and S Smith (car) are my other WR starts.
Squish 4:35 am on 11/05/2009 Permalink |
What kind of format league are you in? Is there a flex position and how many WRs do you start?
Normally I’d say go for it. If you could get Fitz or Wayne for Barber and Coles, it would be a steal especially if it’s a PPR league. What does your waiver wire look like? What are some of the top RB prospects on it? As long as someone decent is on it to grab in an emergency, you should be fine. I say you go for it. Maybe afterward try to shop around Steve Smith or the WR you acquired for another first rate RB.
Stone 1:42 pm on 11/05/2009 Permalink
Thanks. It’s a 3WR non-PPR league, no flex. RBs left include J Stewart, J Charles, L Maroney, D Sproles. If there are no takers, do you recommend Wallace over Coles or Walter this week?
Brandon 2:48 pm on 11/05/2009 Permalink |
Depending on the receiver you get, this can be a good trade. I’d scoop up Jonathan Stewart in the meantime to give you some depth at running back. As for which receiver to go with this week, I like Kevin Walter the best out of that group as I think he’ll see a few more targets with Owen Daniels out of the line-up.
Squish 6:01 am on 11/07/2009 Permalink
It’s your choice of who to pick up off waivers as your RB but definitely go ahead with the trade. A good one week fill-in at RB is Charles but long term it’s likely Stewart or Sproles. I’d also recommend Walter this week. He’ll be guaranteed more looks than Wallace or Coles this week which is all that really counts in my book.
Frank 1:12 am on 11/05/2009 Permalink |
I could really use some trade advice, I’m in a league that starts 3 WR, 2RB and a flex, my receivers are Roddy White, Maclin, Knox, Roy Williams, Coles and Andre Caldwell and my running backs are Michael Turner, Ryan Grant, Felix Jones, Mewelde Moore, and Derrick Ward. I have been offered Ricky Williams and Nate Burleson for Roddy White. I’m looking at plugging in Burleson with Maclin and the better matchup the rest of the way among roy williams, coles, and knox and playing Ricky Williams, Grant and Turner as my 2 RB and flex. Should I pull the trigger on the trade? I worry being left without an elite WR.
Brandon 2:51 pm on 11/05/2009 Permalink |
I wouldn’t do this trade. You’re trading away a must-start receiver each week for a WR and RB that you may not even start from week to week. I think with Felix Jones healthy, he should provide enough fantasy points to hold down the flex position, then you can start White, Maclin and whoever else you think has a good match-up.
DJ 2:46 pm on 11/05/2009 Permalink |
For QB this weekend-Warner or A. Smith?
2RBs-F Gore, R Brown, A Bradshaw, Or L Maroney?
3 WRs- A Johnson, S Holmes, N Burleson, S Breaston?
Have had some really crummy weeks. Hoping to change this.
Brandon 2:53 pm on 11/05/2009 Permalink |
Kurt Warner at QB; Gore and Brown at RB; Johnson, Burleson and Breaston at WR. Santonio Holmes and Laurence Maroney make my “miss” list this week.
Bobby Triplett 10:04 am on 11/06/2009 Permalink |
Brandon, First time reading the blog… i like it bro, well done. Question for you: For my 3rd recieving option who do you like? Antonio Bryant, Lance Moore, Issac Bruce or S Straughter?
Brandon 10:30 am on 11/06/2009 Permalink |
That’s quite a group of guys you have there Bobby, but I think you’re going to want to go with Isaac Bruce (although Straughter is an option if your league awards points for kick returns.) With Bryant and Straughter competing for catches, it’s hard to go with either of them. Lance Moore might not even play this weekend due to an ankle injury. Go with Bruce and hope he can get some open looks with Michael Crabtree distracting defenses.
ryan 4:32 pm on 11/07/2009 Permalink |
Hey guys,
Who would you start mike wallace or torry holt????
Brandon 4:43 pm on 11/07/2009 Permalink |
I would usually say Mike Wallace, but Holt is playing at home and has a much easier match-up. Go with Torry Holt this week.
ryan 8:30 pm on 11/07/2009 Permalink
Yah I think Holt is the better play but he burned me last week haha with a great matchup. Thanks for your help.
