Here are our waiver wire candidates going into week six. As usual, you’ll find players who are either [Startable], a [Stopgap] to get you past a BYE or injury, [Worth a look] and spot on your bench, or [One-week-wonder]s who don’t warrant a roster spot, so you make your roster moves accordingly. You’ll also see the percent owned in parenthesis (and if you see an asterisk by the players name, it means they’re on a BYE this week.) We begin with a whole slew of wide receivers, a few of which racked up some serious stats (Miles Austin, Austin Collie, Jeremy Maclin) this past weekend.
UPDATE: Added Chad Henne to the list (Oct-13)
Wide Receivers
- [Startable] Antonio Bryant, TB (69%) – He seems to be getting healthier with each week and at this point I’m fairly confident putting him as my WR3, even with their inexperienced quarterback.
- [Startable] Sidney Rice, MIN (67%) – Rice continues to be one of Favre’s favorite targets and is good for around five receptions, 60 yards or so and maybe a touchdown. He’s worth playing as a WR3 if you don’t have better options.
- [Worth a look] * Michael Crabtree, SF (70%) – With the performance San Francisco put on display this weekend, I’m sure the team’s management will be strongly considering making some changes to key positions…including wide receiver? He’s still more of a keeper league prospect, but he could be worth the gamble if you have a roster spot.
- [Worth a look] Mohamed Massaquoi, CLE (60%) – Don’t give up on Massaquoi already if you were one of those who snatched him off waivers last week. Sunday’s game with the Bills was very windy and neither side could throw the ball with any success. Keep him on your bench for now, but don’t be surprised to be putting him back in your lineup in a week or two.
- [Worth a look] Eddie Royal, DEN (60%) – Royal was finally involved in the offense and while he didn’t find the endzone, he still had 10 catches for 90 yards. He’s a borderline WR3 until he can prove that he’s a consistent part of the offense though.
- [Worth a look] * Miles Austin, DAL (54%) – Unfortunately he has a BYE this coming week, because with Roy Williams out on Sunday, Austin took it upon himself to single-handedly beat the Chiefs. I’m not sure he repeats his 250 yard, two touchdown performance ever again, but he still could have some value if Williams misses any more time or because Romo will fight to get him in the line-up on a weekly basis.
- [Worth a look] Kenny Britt, TEN (43%) – For the remainder of the season, it appears the Titans passing game is going to be very inconsistent, so Britt doesn’t really make a strong play. He’s a great keeper league prospect though if you have a roster spot to spare.
- [Worth a look] Donnie Avery, STL (34%) – Not sure you can play a Rams receiver (or any player) with much confidence, but Avery has 11 catches over the past three games and is obviously a big part of the passing game in St. Louis.
- [Worth a look] Lance Moore, NO (33%) – He’s had the BYE week to heal his injuries and should now begin his re-integration process into the Saints passing game, which hasn’t looked all that spectacular over their past two games. It was only last season that he racked up over 900 yards and 10 touchdowns.
- [Worth a look] * Austin Collie, IND (32%) – While I picked Pierre Garcon to have a big game last night, it was his teammate Austin Collie who ended up with the big night. He’s still rotating with Garcon, but if he continues to build up chemistry with Peyton Manning, he’ll become a solid WR3 play.
- [Worth a look] Jeremy Maclin, PHI (30%) – For some reason Maclin took over the role that DeSean Jackson usually plays and ended up with a HUGE day, catching passes for 142 yards and two scores. Don’t expect Jackson to have zero catches very often and while Maclin obviously has some talent, I’m not sure he becomes “startable” until he can string a few good games together.
- [Worth a look] Andre Caldwell, CIN (28%) – Strangely, Caldwell seems to see the most action when the game is on the line. I’m not sure exactly why that is, but it doesn’t help fantasy manager’s sanity all that much when they have to wait over three quarters for him to make a touchdown grab and actually put up some fantasy stats.
- [Worth a look] Hakeem Nicks, NYG (24%) – Nicks now has two scores in the past two games and is showing some of the skills he put on display in the preseason. Mario Manningham suffered a chest contusion in the game and while he’s not expected to miss any time, it could open the door for some more reps for Nicks.
- [Worth a look] Mike Wallace, PIT (13%) – He’s a risky play from week-to-week, but great in a keeper league. I took the gamble on him this week and it paid off, but I won’t recommend you start him all that often unless the matchup is really good.
- [Stopgap] Nate Washington, TEN (49%) – He ended his three game touchdown streak this weekend, but he’s still one of the top targets in the Titans passing game.
- [Stopgap] Chris Henry, CIN (18%) – His reception numbers aren’t anything to write home about, but he’s putting up decent numbers with what he can get.
- [One-week-wonder] Dennis Northcutt, DET (1%) – Nortcutt saw more reps with Calvin Johnson out (knee injury.) Don’t expect that this will be a regular thing.
Quarterbacks
- [Startable] Matt Hasselbeck, SEA (74%) – Hasselbeck returned in a BIG way (241 yards, 4 TD) against the Jaguars and makes a great backup (or starter depending on how hurtin’ you are at the position!)
- [Startable] Kyle Orton, DEN (73%) – He continues to win AND put up numbers on a Broncos team that appeared to be in shambles at the beginning of the season. You now need to consider starting Orton on a weekly basis depending on who your alternatives are.
- [Worth a look] * Chad Henne (8%) – He looked like a seasoned veteran against the vaunted Jets defense last night. I’m not sure he’ll keep up that level of play over the next few games, but it’s worth keeping an eye on him to see if he can (although he has a BYE this week.)
- [Worth a look] Josh Johnson, TB (7%) – Minus the three interceptions this weekend, it seems as if Johnson is improving drastically each week. While he’s still working on the passing aspect of the job, he’s been very productive running the ball when necessary, with almost 100 yards over three games. He might be the one bright spot to come out of the team’s 0-5 start.
- [Stopgap] Jake Delhomme, CAR (28%) – He’s only good for about 200-250 yards and a touchdown, but maybe that’s better than what you’re currently getting out of your backup.
Running Backs
- [Startable] Jamal Lewis, CLE (57%) – I struggled to assign the “startable” label to Lewis, but with his performance on Sunday (which probably pissed off a lot of Jerome Harrison owners out there!) there was no way I couldn’t. He should be the main man once again in Cleveland…just remember that he does play for the Browns.
- [Worth a look] Shonn Greene, NYJ (17%) – Keep an eye on this guy tonight to see if he’s waiver-worthy or just a keeper league prospect.
- [Stopgap] Sammy Morris, NE (45%) – With Fred Taylor out and Laurence Maroney dancing around ineffectively (as usual), Morris is once again the primary tailback in New England. He’s only worth starting as a BYE week or injury filler, or possibly in the flex spot if necessary though.
Tight Ends
- [Worth a look] Jermichael Finley, GB (20%) – Before the Packers BYE, Finley had a huge 128 yard, one touchdown performance. He’s definitely someone to consider this week against the Lions.
- [Worth a look] Tony Scheffler, DEN (17%) – With the Broncos passing game improving on a weekly basis, Scheffler is finally seeing some more looks. Keep an eye on him and see if Orton grows to like throwing to the tight end, which is something he never did too often in Chicago.
- [Stopgap] Visanthe Shiancoe, MIN (64%) – One of Favre’s favorite targets in the red zone. Shiancoe is right in there with Todd Heap with guys who are border-line startable/stopgap guys each week.
- [Stopgap] Benjamin Watson, NE (55%) – I thought Watson would disappear into the fantasy-depths after his two touchdown performance in week one, but he’s still hanging around and scored a touchdown this Sunday. He seems to be Tom Brady’s first target in the red zone with Randy Moss seeing loads of coverage, but he still isn’t putting up numbers worthy of a weekly start.
- [Stopgap] Marcedes Lewis, JAX (16%) – He’s still getting a few receptions a game and if your really hurting for depth at the TE position, he could fill in for a while.
- [One-week-wonder] Jeff King, CAR (0%) – He’s not consistent enough to start, hence the 0% ownership prior to this past weekend.

I love your waiver reports! It’s like anyone I can possibly think of and 20 more have their own description here!
I’m an Andre Caldwell owner and quite honestly I don’t think he’s worth a look unless you’re in a league with return yardage. Eventually his TD streak will end and when it does, so will his fantasy viability. That being said, I’ve looked like a genius playing him the last two weeks in a return yardage league. Now that my main bye weeks are passed, I don’t see him getting the start on my team again anytime soon.

Matt, Brandon, you guys are awesome! Would you guys trade your Tony Throw-mo and Ronnie Brown for Philip Rivers and Deangelo Williams, or has the ship sailed on Carolina RB? We play in a standard Yahoo league and my other RBs are Chris Johnson, LJ, and Bradshaw. Thanks in advance for the advice!
Brandon 11:25 am on 10/13/2009 Permalink |
Although you’d be upgrading at the quarterback position, I can’t recommend trading away Ronnie Brown, even if it’s for a guy who’s preseason rank was a bit higher. Brown looks great running in the wildcat offense and is racking up touchdowns like Williams did last year. I’d keep Romo and Brown and hope that the Romo-to-Miles Austin connection is for real and his stats improve from here on out.

should i trade my calvin johnson and pierre garcon for randy moss and mark clayton? my wr1 is andre johnson and have devery henderson and eddie royal on the bench. i need your psychic powers!
Brandon 11:33 am on 10/13/2009 Permalink |
Stick with Megatron and Garcon, as you’d basically be trading both for Randy Moss (Clayton seems like a throw in to make the numbers work.) Johnson’s injury doesn’t appear to be anything serious and Garcon’s potential makes him more valuable than Clayton. So far this season, opposing teams have been doubling up on Moss in a big way and his numbers are suffering.
Shirley 8:24 am on 10/13/2009 Permalink |
I know you said not to give up on Massaquoi but I need a win. Currently my WRs are Pierre Garcon (BYE), Derrick Mason, Roddy White, Mohamed Massaquoi, and Mario Manningham.
Miles Austin, Austin Collie, Jeremy Maclin, Andrew Caldwell, Torry Holt, and Josh Morgan are some of the guys available on the waiver wire.
I’m thinking about dropping Massaquoi for Maclin. Thoughts?
Brandon 11:41 am on 10/13/2009 Permalink |
It’s tough with a lot of these guys, because they’ve all (Massaquoi, Austin, Collie, Garcon, Maclin) had one or two break out games. I still like Massaquoi and last weeks stats shouldn’t scare you off this soon. Cleveland was playing in very windy conditions and Derek Anderson had the worst game of his career. This week the ship should right itself somewhat and I think he still has value. You might drop Garcon this week if you’re looking to start one of those guys, as he’s on a BYE and would be available next week most likely if you wanted to pick him up again. Maclin is going to be very hit or miss this season, so if you’re up for the mood swings, feel free to grab him and drop Garcon. In the long term, Collie might have a bit more value than Garcon as he seems more consistent, so if you just want to swap players on a BYE, you might consider that. Did any of that make sense?

Yet another bit of advice I seek from you legends….
OK, I play NFL.com fantasy and require 3 WR to start each week
I have 5 (bye week)
C Johnson (7)
B Marshall (7)
R Williams (6)
M Sims Walker (7)
K Britt (7)
My problem is pretty easy to see. I only have 5 bench spots and atm they belong to 2 WR, 2 RB (Bradshaw + Hightower) and a TE (J Finley/T Heap).
I can try ride out week 7 by playing Williams + dropping K Britt (7) picking up someone off the waivers, ditching my TE reserve and picking up someone off the waivers. OR I will have to consider trading at least one of my big guys away. Jennings is a top WR who hasn’t been scoring too well maybe try for someone like him? What do you guys think and if you think try a trade what WR do you like? Keeping in mind the people offered trades are usually sceptical they are getting screwed over. Thanks once again guys!
Brandon 11:45 am on 10/13/2009 Permalink |
Orchestrating a successful trade is one of the toughest parts of fantasy football, but if possible, Greg Jennings makes a great buy low candidate. I’d definitely drop Britt and pick up someone off waivers if there are decent offerings there. Keep Megatron and Brandon Marshall and consider trading Mike Sims-Walker (who I’m pretty sure has reached his potential in the Jacksonville offense) or Britt if anyone wants him. Maybe package Sims-Walker and Britt for Jennings? Hopefully this helps.
Squish 4:16 pm on 10/13/2009 Permalink |
I second what Brandon said.
Though I also have Roy Williams on a few teams and I’ve been contemplating dropping him for Miles Austin. Seems risky but I don’t see Williams having too big an upside whereas Austin has a ton. Thoughts?
Mal 6:45 pm on 10/13/2009 Permalink |
I have Britt for Maclin and Britt for Caldwell as pending waiver transactions. However, someone did accept my trade of Britt for Garcon, so the question is should I cancel my pending waiver transactions?
Colts have a great match up wk 7 vs the Rams, although with that in mind they also did this week vs the titans to which garcon saw no action. Anthony Gonzalez is also on the waiver, perhaps I should try pick him up, however if he’s not ready for wk7 I’m in trouble, thoughts? Cheers!
Brandon 8:43 am on 10/14/2009 Permalink
I think long term Maclin should have the most value out of the bunch. However, since the trade was already accepted, can you still back out of it?

First off, to the Geeks, sorry I’ve been MIA. Corporate America has blocked me from the Fantasy Football world, but specifically your website. “Games” are not allowed.
Secondarily. I’m playing WR5 roulette between Nate Washington and potentially Avery or Maclin. Avery is explosive enough to score some points and STL has some decent match-ups later this season.
On the RB front, I was screwed by a Cleveland Brownie (surprised??) as I dropped Bradshaw (went for 40+ in our league) for Harrison (went for 1.6). You do the math.
Keep up the good work!
Brandon 8:46 am on 10/14/2009 Permalink |
Good to have you back E-roc! How doe they know FFGeekBlog.com is associated with “games”?
Anyways, I like Jeremy Maclin out of the group of receivers you mention there. Avery plays for an offense that is terrible and it’s hard for me to get excited about him.
For your running back, that’s rough about Bradshaw. Who knew he’d get his first touchdowns of the year AND Jamal Lewis would make his glorious return to the gridiron in the same week! Can you scoop Bradshaw back up off waivers/free agency?

I need a Plug n Play TE this week to take Witten’s spot in my lineup… Available TE’s are Watson, Pettigrew, Scheffler, Rosario, Z. Miller, Donald Lee and Scaife. It is a TD heavy league. My first thought is Watson due to NE seeming to like him near the redzone, but I think Pettigrew may have a huge week against the Packers if Calvin Johnson is out. Any Suggestions??
Brandon 8:48 am on 10/14/2009 Permalink |
Pettigrew hasn’t done enough this year so far to convince me that he’s a viable fantasy starter. Go with Ben Watson and hope Brady finds him in the endzone this week against a week Titans secondary.
Jennifer Lopez 11:21 am on 10/14/2009 Permalink |
If you were in a standard fantasy league with 11-man rosters, and you had a terrible WR situation (Nate Burleson, Santonio Holmes, and Terrell Owens) and someone in your league just dropped Ravens S/T, would you drop T.O. in favor of the Ravens S/T?
Brandon 11:27 am on 10/14/2009 Permalink |
I didn’t know J-Lo was into fantasy football…I guess her purchase of a stake in the Dolphins has really got her into the sport! Anyways, I’m not ready to give up on T.O. just yet, as there are rumors that he could be traded before the deadline at the end of the week. The Ravens defense/special teams unit hasn’t been good this year, but not good enough to warrant this type of move.

Which side gets the better deal:
A. Steven Jackson
B. Percy Harvin + T.O
Thanks
Brandon 3:34 pm on 10/14/2009 Permalink |
Seems like a fairly even trade, but it all depends on the situation (i.e. what WR/RB each team has)
bryan 1:39 pm on 10/14/2009 Permalink |
im having a hard time deciding what WRs to start this week. I need to play 3. I have Greg Jennings, Santana Moss, Braylon Edwards, Nate Burleson and Mike Sims-Walker. Which 3 should I start?
Brandon 3:33 pm on 10/14/2009 Permalink |
Greg Jennings (vs DET), Santana Moss (vs KC) and Mike Sims-Walker (vs STL) have the best match-ups. However, the Jets will most likely be without Jericho Cotchery this weekend, meaning lots of looks for Braylon Edwards. I’d still start Jennings, Moss and Sims-Walker though and hope all of them do well so you don’t regret benching anyone!

I realize the uncertainty surrounding the RB picture in Cleveland, Dallas & (to a lesser extent) Carolina. However, I desperately need to pick-up a RB….& I was wondering which of the following RB’s you believe will put up the best stats through the remainder of the season:
Jerome Harrison
Felix Jones
Jonathan Stewart
Thanks for all your great advice!
Brandon 3:26 pm on 10/14/2009 Permalink |
With Jamal Lewis back in the picture, Harrison has very little value as it was hard enough when Lewis was out to put up stats in such a bad offense. As for the other two, they’ve both struggled through injuries this season and neither is the starter in their offense even when healthy. However, I think Felix Jones has the most value when he actually plays, as he gets plenty of carries in relief of Marion Barber and I have more hope that the Cowboys offense will improve than the Panthers. Tashard Choice’s role in the offense scares me slightly if Dallas goes the way of a three-headed monster, but I still like Felix Jones more than Harrison or Stewart.

I start 2 rbs and a flex, should I waive Mewelde Moore for Shonn Greene? I have $1 left for free agents so this would be my final move. My other rbs are: Gore, Coffee, Michael Bush, Harrison, Mike Bell.
Thanks
Brandon 8:41 am on 10/15/2009 Permalink |
I wouldn’t waste your final $1 for Shonn Greene, who I see having very little fantasy impact this season (unless Thomas Jones got hurt.) Keep your money for another week when a more interesting free agent appears.
Jim 8:21 pm on 10/14/2009 Permalink |
ok im in kind of a bind here i need to start 3 WRs but dont know which to choose. the candidates are:
Santana Moss
Brandon Marshal
Hakeem Nicks
Steve Breaston
and Megatron(but hes “hurt”)
and also would you drop any of those for Sidney Rice?
Brandon 8:39 am on 10/15/2009 Permalink |
I’d think about dropping Steve Breaston for Sidney Rice, just because Rice seems to find the endzone more often, but don’t do it this week (Breaston has a better match-up.) When Calvin Johnson is healthy, you’ll be starting him, Moss and Marshall anyways, so it’s just a matter of bench players. This week go with Moss, Marshall and if you’re feeling risky, take a gamble on Hakeem Nicks and hope he finds the endzone for a third straight week. If you’re more conservative, go with Breaston.
Andrew 8:32 pm on 10/14/2009 Permalink |
Start Philip RIvers or Kyle Orton?
Brandon 8:32 am on 10/15/2009 Permalink |
I wouldn’t have expected to say this at the start of the season, but I’d start Kyle Orton. The Broncos passing game has been improving and their defense was good enough to limit Tom Brady last week, so I’m thinking it might do the same against Rivers.
Farve$FootLong 1:39 am on 10/16/2009 Permalink |
I’m in a league that really devalues RB’s(one point for every 25 yards compared to receivers one point for every 10 yards). So I have had to really stock up and load up my team with wide outs.
My question is- Is my wideout postion strong enough?(i have Schaub, MJD, A. Gates at the other postions so i feel good there)
Wide Receivers:
Roddy White
Anquan Boldin
Nate Burelson
Sidney Rice
Pierre Garcon
Donny Avery
And who would you start this week??
Brandon 8:25 am on 10/16/2009 Permalink |
That group doesn’t look too bad if it’s a 12 team league or something. As far as who to start this week, I’d go with your top three guys there (White, Boldin and Burleson.) Nate Burleson has a great match-up this week against the Cardinals, who have been pretty bad against the pass, while Boldin and White are just much better options over the rest of your crew…even with mediocre match-ups.
