Here are our waiver wire candidates for week thirteen. As usual, you’ll find players who are either [Startable], a [Stopgap] to get you past a BYE or injury, [Worth a look] and spot on your bench, or [One-week-wonder]s who don’t warrant a roster spot, so you make your roster moves accordingly. You’ll also see the percent owned in parenthesis. With the playoffs rapidly approaching (only one week of the regular season left in my two main leagues,) many teams out there are probably in a “must win” situation this week. Hopefully some of the players below can get you a much needed victory and give you a chance at that championship trophy (or pride, cash, whatever else you get for winning a fantasy football league.) Anyways, let’s get to the waiver wire picks for this week, starting with a few wide receivers that could help your cause…
Wide Receivers
- [Startable] Pierre Garcon, IND (75%) – Garcon continues to get looks each game and has two touchdowns in the past three games. He makes a solid WR3 and should see some extra snaps if the team decides to rest Reggie Wayne and Dallas Clark down the stretch.
- [Startable] Chris Chambers, SD (72%) – Although match-ups with Denver and Buffalo don’t look that appealing, Chambers does play Cleveland in week 15 and could be there in a big spot for your team during the playoffs.
- [Startable] Robert Meachem, NO (61%) – I’m finding it hard to write anything nice about a guy who helped dismember the Patriots last night, but he does have five touchdowns in the past four games and is a home run threat for sure.
- [Stopgap] Devery Henderson, NO (62%) – “Consistency” is not a word Henderson is familiar with, but he definitely rebounded from his -2 yard performance last week in a big way en route to stomping my New England Patriots last night.
- [Stopgap] Laveranues Coles, CIN (58%) – Coles was supposed to put up big numbers against the Browns last weekend, but I’ll give him a mulligan, as he plays the Lions this Sunday and should put up solid numbers.
- [Stopgap] Donnie Avery, STL (56%) – Four catches in each of the past three games and three touchdowns over that same span. Avery makes a decent WR3/flex play from here on out.
- [Stopgap] Kenny Britt, TEN (26%) – He’s a “must own” in keeper leagues, but Britt has a touchdown in two straight games and is becoming one of Vince Young’s favorite targets.
- [Stopgap] Jason Avant, PHI (19%) – Starter DeSean Jackson could miss this weekend’s game with a concussion, which means more playing time for Avant, who was already putting up solid numbers these past few weeks.
- [Worth a look] Antonio Bryant, TB (53%) – Josh Freeman is coming into his own and Bryant could get more looks as the rookie quarterback feels more and more confident throwing the ball downfield.
- [Worth a look] Michael Jenkins, ATL (21%) – Jenkins got a lot of looks with Redman at the helm and could get a lot more this weekend.
- [Worth a look] James Jones, GB (11%) – He’s getting looks each game and if you’re willing/able to put up with his inconsistencies, Jones might be the guy you’re looking for.
- [One-week-wonder] Mark Clayton, BAL (37%) – Just look at his numbers in the four weeks leading up to Sunday…then leave him in the free agent pool.
- [One-week-wonder] Darrius Heyward-Bey, OAK (2%) – Just wanted to give the number one drafted wide receiver this year props for making the first touchdown catch of his career. Don’t start him though.
- [One-week-wonder] Sam Aiken, NE (1%) – Aiken hadn’t caught a pass in two weeks leading up to last night’s game. Don’t expect seven catches for him in another game all year.
Quarterbacks
- [Stopgap] Kyle Orton, DEN (71%) – Orton wasn’t great against the Giants on Thanksgiving, but he didn’t re-injure himself and now has decent potential against a bad Chiefs defense.
- [Stopgap] David Garrard, JAX (71%) – Last time Garrard played Houston, he threw for 214 yards and zero touchdowns. Let’s hope he puts up better numbers this weekend if you roll the dice on him.
- [Stopgap] Matt Cassel, KC (52%) – I’m not diggin’ his chances against the Broncos, but Cassel is usually good for 200 yards and a score if that helps your team.
- [Stopgap] Alex Smith, SF (43%) – Smith is doing his best to shake the “bust” tag and has five touchdowns over his past two games. He won’t put up a ton of yards, but if he can find Frank Gore or Vernon Davis on a short touchdown pass or two, he should put up decent fantasy stats for a third straight week.
- [Stopgap] / [Worth a look] Vince Young, TEN (43%) – Who knew Vince Young could throw the ball? Don’t expect 387 yards against the Colts this weekend, but Tennessee has as good a chance as anyone to knock Indy from the ranks of the unbeaten and finally get to .500 for the first time all year. Young has more value in keeper leagues at this point, but could fill in for a desperate team somewhere.
- [Stopgap] / [Worth a look] Josh Freeman, TB (10%) – Don’t call me Nostradamus or anything, but I called that big game from Freeman last week. He has a tougher match-up with the Panthers this weekend though, but similar to Young above, he has a big potential in keeper leagues.
- [One-week-wonder] Ryan Fitzpatrick, BUF (6%) – Don’t expect a repeat performance from Fitzpatrick versus Darrelle Revis and the Jets this weekend.
- [One-week-wonder] Chris Redman, ATL (3%) – He played admirably in Matt Ryan’s absence, but with the Eagles on the horizon, I’m in no hurry to get him in my QB spot this week.
Running Backs
- [Stopgap] Mike Bell, NO (68%) – Bell seems to get a lot of his carries when it comes to mop-up time, which is worth something on a team that can score as much as the Saints. I don’t like his chances against a tough Washington team this weekend though.
- [Stopgap] Rock Cartwright, WAS (67%) – The Redskins offense just isn’t good enough to make Cartwright an appealing option and a game against the Saints isn’t going to help the situation. Expect Washington to abandon the ground game early in this one and limit Rock’s effectiveness.
- [Stopgap] Jerious Norwood, ATL (31%) – With Michael Turner back in the line-up last weekend, it was Norwood (not Snelling) who got the backup carries. With Turner re-injuring himself though, expect Norwood to get the bulk of the carries this weekend against the Eagles.
- [Stopgap] Chris Brown, HOU (11%) – The Texans seem to like the split between Steve Slaton and Chris Brown at the moment and when the game is on the line, Brown is the guy they’re handing the ball to. He has a solid match-up against the Jaguars this coming week as well.
- [Worth a look] Felix Jones, DAL (73%) – It seems that it’s going to take more than owner Jerry Jones’ campaigning to get Felix the carries he needs to be an effective fantasy running back, but he’s doing the best he can with what he gets. Last week he put up solid numbers on just seven carries and even found the endzone.
- [Worth a look] Larry Johnson, CIN (70%) – LJ racked up 107 yards against the Browns and would have another appealing match-up this week against the Lions if it weren’t for the fact that Cedric Benson will return to the starting role. Playing Detroit though, there could be enough scraps for Johnson to put up some serviceable numbers still.
- [Worth a look] Sammy Morris, NE (25%) – Morris made his return from injury last night, but it was still Laurence Maroney that saw the bulk of the carries. With Maroney running half-way decent, Morris has little fantasy value these days.
Tight Ends
- [Stopgap] Kevin Boss, NYG (61%) – After a two score performance in week 11, Boss disappeared off the map against Denver this past weekend. Expect him to rebound a bit against the Cowboys though.
- [Stopgap] Zach Miller, OAK (58%) – In the two games since Bruce Gradkowski has taken over as quarterback, Miller has racked up 10 catches for 138 yards and a score.
- [Stopgap] Dustin Keller, NYJ (51%) – Keller now has 21 catches over the past four games and has established himself as one of Mark Sanchez’s favorite targets.
- [Stopgap] Fred Davis, WAS (25%) – With Chris Cooley out for the season, Davis will continue to get looks from Jason Campbell on a regular basis (hopefully more touchdowns too!)
- [Worth a look] Bo Scaife, TEN (9%) – As Vince Young gets more and more adept as a passer, he’s looking more and more to his safety outlet, Bo Scaife.
- [One-week-wonder] Anthony Fasano, MIA (7%) – He didn’t have a catch in the previous two games leading up to Sunday’s contest with Buffalo.

Wondering what you guys think about:
- swapping Rock Cartwright for Fred Jackson (other RBs are Sjax, Wells, Forsett, Charles). I like Jackson, Rock has OAK in wk 14, but…not impressive Sunday, and unless Jackson is hurt vs TEN, probably wouldn’t start him then anyway….
- Swapping one of my receivers (SmithNYG or Ochocinco?) for Chambers (also have Welker, Austin, SimsWalker). Now questioning whether to even start Ocho vs DET, he’s really stunk lately.
- Which D/ST(s) are best to hold for rest of season, playoffs start wk14, can hold 2 if necessary: CIN, BAL, GB, DEN, BUF, ARI, ATL, SEA
- we start 2 RB/WR, no flex, non ppr. Thanks, guys, your advice is always stellar.

Keep Cincinatti and Green Bay on Defense.
For this week stay in the NFC West and start Sjax and Forsett. They have both been solid lately. At WR start Austin and SimsWalker.
Chambers wont pan out long run and FJack is more reliable moving forward. Anyone on Was is a tough start every week.
TJ 8:52 pm on 12/02/2009 Permalink
Thanks Shane, I didn’t have much faith in Rock, nice to hear it from someone else.
Brandon 8:38 pm on 12/02/2009 Permalink |
I’d grab Fred Jackson for sure, as it looks like he could get the bulk of the carries for Buffalo down the stretch. Cartwright plays for a Redskins offense that is just too terrible to rely on.
For your receivers, I’d stick with Ochocinco and Smith and start Ochocinco this week. He just complained about the offense not passing enough and I figure that will be worth at least a few extra looks.
Finally, for defense I agree with Shane, go with Cincinnati and Green Bay.
TJ 9:02 pm on 12/02/2009 Permalink
I guess you guys don’t think much of Welkers this week…… Now do you really think Cincy’s going to actually try to pass the ball vs Detroit Lately they seem to be saving Palmer’s arm for the postseason. MSW, Austin, and Ocho all look good this week, I can start 2…
Brandon 9:12 pm on 12/02/2009 Permalink
Oops, I was confused there. I thought you meant you were going to drop Ochocinco or Smith for Chambers. If you can only start two of those receivers, I’d go with Steve Smith and Mike Sims-Walker.
Rom3o 4:14 pm on 12/01/2009 Permalink |
Who do you think to start this week? Laverrneous Coles,Jason Avant, or Marrio Manningham? I already got Welker and Burleson starting
Brandon 8:35 pm on 12/02/2009 Permalink |
Go with Jason Avant, who should have a big day with DeSean Jackson possibly sidelined. If Jackson plays though, go with Manningham.

Need help have two weeks left to clinch playoffs and this week is my toughest match up. I need 3 WR, 2 RB, and 2 FLEX. Here are my players; Sims-Walker, Roddy White, Smith (NYG), Smith (Car), Crabtree, TO, Chambers, Hightower, Pierre Thomas, Norwood, and Larry Johnson.
Please help me out. With TO finally putting up good numbers and Chambers becoming KC’s number 1, I’m not sure who to start.
Dennis 9:55 am on 12/02/2009 Permalink |
I also have Antonio Bryant.
Brandon 8:43 pm on 12/02/2009 Permalink |
At running back, go with Pierre Thomas and Jerious Norwood. For your receivers and flex, go with Mike Sims-Walker, Steve Smith (NYG), Roddy White, Michael Crabtree and take the gamble on Steve Smith (CAR). I know he was shut down last week, but he gets a match-up with Tampa Bay and even if Delhomme is out, backup Matt Moore has experience throwing to Smith and should look his way often.
Duncan 1:02 pm on 12/02/2009 Permalink |
I need to start two: Steve Smith (NYG), Chris Chambers, and/or Jason Avant.
It’s tough because while Avant has been putting up reasonable numbers and has great sleeper potential with DJax out it’s hard to start him over Smith or Chambers. On the other hand, Dallas’s pass defense has stepped up over the last few weeks (not to mention Eli’s struggles) and I’m still not sold on Chambers especially against a decent defense in Denver coming off a strong game and a few extra days of rest.
Any thoughts?
Brandon 8:34 pm on 12/02/2009 Permalink |
Last time the G-Men played Dallas, Smith had a huge game, so I’d leave him in there and hope he can do the same. For your other receiver, I like Jason Avant this week as it appears DeSean Jackson will sit this one out.

I’m sharing in Duncan’s dilemma…
To all: would you pick up D.Bowe or Meachem in exchange for S.Smith (NYG) or Cotchery?
Brandon 8:32 pm on 12/02/2009 Permalink |
Meachem is higher risk, but has a potential for higher reward over Cotchery. However, I’d stick with what you have just because Jerricho is still a number one receiver in the Jets offense. Also, what are the odds that Meachem, the teams third receiver, keeps catching touchdowns every game?! Stick with what you got.

Hi, I would really appreciate some help….
Steelers or Saints Defense?
I need three: Benson, Slaton, Norwood, Pierre Thomas, Chris Brown
I need two: Calvin Johnson, Marques Colston, Pierre Garcon, Hakeem Nicks
Also I have Kurt Warner….if he cant play who makes for a better pickup Chris Redman, Vince Young or David Garrad?
Thanks for the help!
Brandon 2:59 pm on 12/04/2009 Permalink |
Go with the Saints for your defense. They’ve been good and have a great match-up with a terrible Redskins offense. At running back, go with Thomas, Benson, and Norwood. For your receivers, start Calvin Johnson (as long as he’s playing, which it appears he should be at this point) and Marques Colston. Finally, for your quarterback, if Warner is a no-go, your best bet is probably Garrard against the Texans. Good luck!
Sal 5:00 am on 12/03/2009 Permalink |
Need to start 3: SmithNYG, Sims-Walker, Burleson, Garcon, Avant and Crabtree.
Thanks for the help!
Brandon 2:47 pm on 12/04/2009 Permalink |
I’d go with Sims-Walker, Smith and Avant
Dennis 9:44 am on 12/03/2009 Permalink |
Cartwright or Norwood?
Brandon 2:29 pm on 12/04/2009 Permalink |
Norwood.

Not sure who to start. I need to start 1QB, 2 WRs, 2RBs, 1 TE and a flex. Please help. Here is my roster
Cutler
Garrard
Sims-Walker
Andre Johnson
Larry Fitzgerald
Sid Rice
Ray Rice
Rashard Mendenhall
Joseph Addai
Jamaal Charles
Visanthe Shiancoe
Antonio Gates
Brandon 3:06 pm on 12/04/2009 Permalink |
Cutler (I know it’s tough, but bear with him for at least this one week!), Andre Johnson, Larry Fitzgerald, Sidney Rice (flex), Ray Rice, Rashard Mendenhall, and Antonio Gates.
Great team (besides Cutler,) by the way.

Hey Brandon!
Running Short on RB’s this week due to Bernard Scott’s turf toe and Cedric Benson now playing. Should I drop him or does he still warrant a roster spot? My other RB’s are Ricky Williams and Brandon Jacobs, but I really think I need to bench Jacobs because he hasn’t done anything worth starting him so far. With Dallas as a matchup this week it isn’t worth the risk in my opinion. As far as RB’s available to pick up in my league, I have a choice between Felix Jones, Chris Brown, or Sammy Morris. I could drop Scott and pick up any of these RB’s for this week. What do you think? I need to start two RB’s Sunday and Ricky Williams will obviously be one of them.
BTW- Thanks for the advice on picking up Avant, Meachem, and Henderson last week as well as starting Donald Driver! Started Henderson and Driver which was good, but wish I would have started Meachum too! Breaston didn’t get crap and I forgot to check if Warner was out- oops! This week I think I will start Avant, Driver, and Meachum. Do you agree?
I won in my league last week too and beat the guy in 1st place! YEAH! Thanks!!!!
Brandon 2:33 pm on 12/04/2009 Permalink |
Hey Natalie, congrats on the victory! It’s probably safe to ditch Bernard Scott at this point. In terms of who to start at running back, he’s a bit of a risk, but I like Felix Jones. The Giants run defense isn’t that great and Jones has played very well the past few games when given the chances.
As for your receivers, it’s hard to guess between Henderson and Meachem, but go with what you have there (Avant, Driver, and Meachem) and you should do alright.
Patrick 4:16 pm on 12/04/2009 Permalink |
I have a big week this week and team is in shambles. I have to chose a WR and a WR/RB flex option. Players to choose from are cadilac williams, rock cartwrite, pierre garcon, and donnie avery. Not sure on which two should play here. Any help is appreciated
Brandon 10:19 am on 12/06/2009 Permalink |
I’d go with your two wide receivers, Garcon and Avery, who have much higher potential than the other two, who will be lucky to run for 80 yards or so.
