Here are our waiver wire candidates for week twelve. As usual, you’ll find players who are either [Startable], a [Stopgap] to get you past a BYE or injury, [Worth a look] and spot on your bench, or [One-week-wonder]s who don’t warrant a roster spot, so you make your roster moves accordingly. You’ll also see the percent owned (in Yahoo! leagues) in parenthesis. All I can say about the cast of characters on this week’s list is that hopefully you don’t have to rely on them too much…otherwise you’re in big trouble.
Wide Receivers
- [Startable] Chris Chambers, SD (64%) – Chambers has been just what the doctor ordered for the Chiefs. The team is now on a two game win streak, in large part due to his solid play the last few weeks.
- [Startable] Laveranues Coles, CIN (58%) – Coles has either scored a touchdown or caught for over 60 yards in each of his past five games. He now plays the following teams: Cleveland, Detroit, Minnesota, San Diego and Kansas City. Can you say JACKPOT?!
- [Stopgap] Pierre Garcon, IND (66%) – After a few poor games from week five to eight, I’ll admit that Pierre Garcon fell off my radar. However, his 108 yard performance against the Ravens yesterday snapped me back to reality to realize that he has 18 catches for 271 yards and a touchdown over his past four games.
- [Stopgap] Devery Henderson, NO (66%) – As soon as I give him the “startable” tag, he goes and catches one pass for negative yardage! He’s still a member of the high-flying Saints offense though and should rebound next week, even if it’s against the Patriots.
- [Stopgap] Patrick Crayton, DAL (58%) – He’s still only really useful in leagues that award for kick returns, but he did have the only touchdown in the Cowboys 7-6 domination (note: sarcasm) of the Redskins on Sunday.
- [Stopgap] Donnie Avery, STL (56%) – He’s the top receiver in a bad passing offense, for whatever that’s worth to you.
- [Worth a look] Robert Meachem, NO (48%) – I crazily recommended someone start Meachem over Mike Sims-Walker this past weekend and thankfully he scored two touchdowns, because his 10 yards receiving were going to make me look like a complete idiot. However, Robert Meachem now has six touchdowns this year and is slowly proving that he’s not just a guy who catches long touchdown passes.
- [Worth a look] Joshua Cribbs, CLE (22%) – Remember, he played against the Lions, but he has value in leagues that award for kick returns.
- [Worth a look] Davone Bess, MIA (11%) – I think he’s the number one receiver on the Dolphins, but who really knows. He hasn’t found the endzone all year, but Bess does have some value in PPR leagues, as he has 46 catches this year.
- [Worth a look] Jason Avant, PHI (7%) – Avant had 156 yards receiving in week ten and caught a touchdown this past weekend. He’s still the third most valuable receiver on the team (fourth if you include Brent Celek), but the Eagles throw the ball A LOT.
- [Worth a look] Brandon Gibson, STL (5%) – Maybe I underestimated the rookie, who now has 12 catches for 154 yards in two games for the Rams. Don’t start him this week, but he does have some favorable match-ups in the near future (13-CHI, 14-TEN, 15-HOU.)
- [One-week-wonder] Mohamed Massaquoi, CLE (16%) – Welcome back to The Wire Mr. Massaquoi. Will you be staying long this time? Most likely not, as you racked up major yardage against the lowly Lions.
- [One-week-wonder] Chansi Stuckey, CLE (2%) – See Mohamed Massaquoi.
Running Backs
- [Startable] Jason Snelling, ATL (79%) – If you’re a Michael Turner owner and didn’t pick up Snelling last week, you’re screwed. It looks like Turner will miss at least three more games (leading right into the playoffs!) and there is a potential he won’t be back for over a month. Snelling racked up two scores yesterday and looks to be a decent RB2 for a while.
- [Startable] / [Stopgap] Fred Jackson, BUF (83%) – I don’t usually include players that are already owned in the bulk of the leagues out there, but with Marshawn Lynch’s shoulder injury on Sunday, I figured it was worth listing Jackson here in case he was available in your league. He’s worth a lot more if Lynch misses some action obviously.
- [Stopgap] Mike Bell, NO (64%) – I’d like to know how annoyed all the Pierre Thomas owners were with Bell’s two touchdown performance on Sunday? Mike Bell isn’t consistent, but he’s always a threat to score some decent points for your squad and if you’re really struggling, maybe he fills in the RB2 or flex spot for your team.
- [Stopgap] Jamal Lewis, CLE (61%) – Against the worst defense he’ll face this season, Lewis racked up 88 combined yards. He’s only an emergency play at this point, as his team is horrible.
- [Stopgap] Bernard Scott, CIN (59%) – He delivered in the absence of Cedric Benson, rushing for 119 yards and catching three passes for another 32 yards. If Benson doesn’t return in week 12, look for Bernard Scott to get the bulk of the carries again as the team slowly works Larry Johnson into the line-up.
- [Stopgap] Rock Cartwright, WAS (19%) – If Portis misses another game due to his concussion, Cartwright will continue to start for the team now that Ladell Betts is out for the year.
- [Worth a look] Larry Johnson, KC (72%) – He had a whopping two carries for five yards in his first game as a Bengal. I doubt he has much fantasy value this year, but just keep an eye on the situation.
- [Worth a look] Kahlil Bell, CHI (1%) – With starter Matt Forte running poorly this year, Bell is someone to keep an eye on, after he racked up 81 yards on just four carries in the Bears loss to the Eagles.
- [One-week-wonder] Mike Tolbert, SD (0%) – The Chargers got all of their running backs involved in the action while dominating the Broncos on Sunday. Don’t expect a repeat performance when they play a team that remembers how to play football.
Quarterbacks
- [Stopgap] David Garrard, JAX (67%) – You don’t want to start him, but if you’re in a two quarterback league and really struggling to find someone…
- [Stopgap] Matt Cassel, KC (49%) – Cassel seems to appear, disappear, then re-appear on this list every couple weeks. He’s on here this time due to a solid near-250 yard, two touchdown performance against the Steelers. I like him more than Garrard at this point.
- [Stopgap] Alex Smith, SF (28%) – Three touchdown passes AT Green Bay is pretty impressive. He now has nine touchdowns and seven interceptions over the five games he’s been the team’s starter.
- [Worth a look] Vince Young, TEN (21%) – Let’s see if he can keep up his winning ways tonight against the Texans.
- [Worth a look] Matthew Stafford, DET (17%) – It was against the Brownies, but 422 yards and five touchdowns is impressive against any NFL team in my book. If he was good enough to make the famous “Team of the Week”, he’s good enough to keep an eye on. He’s definitely someone to look at in a keeper league.
- [One-week-wonder] Brady Quinn, CLE (5%) – It was against the Lions, but 304 yards and four touchdowns is impressive…you know, never mind. Quinn has had his chances and hasn’t done anything to warrant consideration in any fantasy football league.
Tight Ends
- [Startable] Kevin Boss, NYG (43%) – After a huge 76 yard, two touchdown performance, The Boss Man now has four touchdowns in the past three games. He’s definitely startable, especially in touchdown-heavy leagues.
- [Stopgap] Dustin Keller, NYJ (53%) – He didn’t do anything special against the Patriots (who does?!) but he’s still getting looks each week and can put up numbers for your team if you’re struggling to fill the TE spot.
- [Stopgap] Jermichael Finley, GB (20%) – Finley, returning from injury this past weekend, was one of Aaron Rodgers main targets and caught seven passes for 54 yards. He hasn’t earned the consistency tag yet, but he’s definitely shown potential in the limited number of games he’s played this year.
- [Stopgap] Brandon Pettigrew, DET (14%) – He now has 15 catches for 165 yards and two touchdowns over his past three games and is worth a look in most leagues out there, especially keeper leagues.
- [One-week-wonder] David Thomas, NO (0%) – Jeremy Shockey.
- [One-week-wonder] Tom Santi, IND (0%) – Dallas Clark.

Hey all: I am thinking about picking up kevin boss and dropping antonio gates. I am reading that the giants are going to keep looking toward the tight end more while it appears that the chargers are not. What do you think? rob
Matt 8:49 am on 11/24/2009 Permalink |
I definitely wouldn’t drop a TE with 52 receptions for 709 yards in order to pick up one with 24 catches for 359 yards. Gates might only have two TDs, but Boss just has four. If defenses adjust and key in on Boss the way they often do on Gates, Eli’s just going to go to one of his many, many other options.

hey the news this week out of detroit doesn’t look well, who should i start this week, Megatron vs. GB or Housh vs STL?
Brandon 9:11 am on 11/24/2009 Permalink |
If Calvin Johnson actually plays, then I’d go with him, even with Daunte Culpepper likely to start. However, it looks like Johnson won’t be playing either at the moment, making your decision a bit easier

I swear that these questions start coming in earlier and earlier every week. At what point can we just say “It’s too early to tell”.

Here is my team and it needs help! Don’t have WR stars and it’s killing me every week against others who are stacked. Any advice? Meachem is available, Jason Avant, but that’s about it. Who should l hold onto, get rid of, pick up? Snelling is available and tempting to pick up, but I think I am ok with RB’s. PPR in my league and we are only allowed to start 2 RB’s and 3 WR’s. (R)= Reserve
B Jacobs
R Williams
B Scott (R)

D Driver
S Breaston

Natalie 12:05 pm on 11/24/2009 Permalink |
BTW- Peyton Manning is my QB (I didn’t see him listed)
Brandon 4:03 pm on 11/24/2009 Permalink |
Feel free to ditch Earl Bennett and Nate Washington (especially with Vince Young at quarterback.) While Washington has found the endzone recently, his upside isn’t high enough to warrant the limited catches he gets each week. I’d actually drop Todd Heap as well so you could grab Meachem, Avant and Snelling (if only to keep other teams from getting him for the time being.)
No other receivers off my waiver wire list is a free agent in your league? Coles, Wallace, Henderson, etc?
Natalie 4:57 pm on 11/24/2009 Permalink
I had Coles in the draft and dropped him (dumb now I know) and someone else picked him up. Wallace is unavailable, but Henderson is available.
Natalie 4:58 pm on 11/24/2009 Permalink
Oh, and which do you think most will try and pick up? I think Snelling so should I go for him first or get a receiver for sure?
Brandon 3:39 pm on 11/25/2009 Permalink
Did your waivers already clear? Grab Snelling for sure if you have a chance and Henderson as well. You can drop Bennett and/or Washington for them.
Shirley 12:18 pm on 11/24/2009 Permalink |
Should I try to get Rock Cartwright or Bernard Scott?
I have Ryan Moats on my bench on a team with Gore, Ricky Wiliams, Beanie Wells & Slaton. Since Moats didn’t do anything last night, I’d like to replace him with someone to compete with Wells and Slaton for the possible flex slot.
Or should I also drop Wells so that I can get both Cartwright and Scott?
Shirley 1:13 pm on 11/24/2009 Permalink |
Oh and I just noticed that Justin Forsett is available. I’m thinking he should be at the top of my list? His next 3 games look pretty good (STL, SF, HOU).
Brandon 3:59 pm on 11/24/2009 Permalink
Hey Shirley, I’d keep Beanie Wells, since you know he’s going to see action every week. As for the other guys, Rock Cartwright will start for the Redskins for the rest of the year, as long as he’s healthy, so he’s probably the best add of the group. Justin Forsett and Bernard Scott both have good match-ups on the horizon, but it’s not quite clear what the status of Cedric Benson or Julius Jones are at this point. Keep on eye on the health of those two, as they would make excellent plays if they are named the starters. Long story short, if you need to make a waiver move, the safest is to drop Ryan Moats for Rock Cartwright, with your backup waiver claims being Bernard Scott and Justin Forsett.

Hey Brandon, should I start Lesean McCoy vs. WAS or Kevin Smith vs. GB (in a PPR League)?
LeSean has an easier matchup & I feel as if Philly will build an early lead & feed him the rock! Smith catches more passes, & puts up decent #s in our PPR League. Everytime I bench Smith, he inevitably finds the endzone & puts up big #s. I realize Stafford & Megatron may be on the shelf, which would allow GB to load the box & key in on Smith. Do you see any reason to start Smith over McCoy?
Thanks
Brandon 3:41 pm on 11/25/2009 Permalink |
I honestly have no reason to start him…although I’d prefer you could start someone other than LeSean McCoy instead! However, I’d definitely go with McCoy…if only so you don’t have to sit and stare at a bad score from Smith all the way until Sunday.

Brandon: Here is my team now after waivers this morning. Unfortunately the guy that beat me last week ended up getting J. Snelling before I could grab him.
With this lineup who would you start for RB’s and WR’s? I can have 2 RB’s and 3 WR’s starting. PPR league with 1 pt. for every 10 yrds. 5 pts for TD. RB’s are scored same way. Thanks for your help!
P Manning QB

B Jacobs RB

Brandon 3:36 pm on 11/25/2009 Permalink |
Did you list Ricky Williams twice? Anyways, I’d go with Ricky Williams and Brandon Jacobs (with Ahmad Bradshaw out) for your running backs. At wide receiver, go with Devery Henderson, Donald Driver and Steve Breaston.
Natalie 5:09 pm on 11/25/2009 Permalink
Thanks Brandon! Yes, I did list Ricky Williams twice, maybe in hope that he will give me another double digit showing like last week. Can’t beat 30 pts from one player!
Jo 12:23 pm on 11/25/2009 Permalink |
I need one of these RBs..Mendenhall, P. Thomas, or J. Stewart?? And one WR..Housh(good matchup but he’s killing me), Meachem, B. Edwards, or Manningham? CIN D or DAL D? Thanks. Happy Turkey Day.
Brandon 3:32 pm on 11/25/2009 Permalink |
I’d go with Mendenhall, Housh (just hope he gets one of his big yardage or touchdown games) and Cincinnati.
jago 1:28 am on 11/26/2009 Permalink |
I am a little concerned with Mcnabb this week. I just picked up Alex Smith. Should I start him over Mcnabb. All common sense tells me no, but the way that the skins held him down last time, I am not sure
Brandon 7:54 am on 11/29/2009 Permalink |
I know common sense (and a lot of other experts) tell you to go with McNabb, I’m leaning towards Alex Smith actually. The Jaguars defense is a heck of a lot worse than the Redskins at slowing down opposing quarterbacks and the last time McNabb faced Washington, he had one of his worst games of the season. I know the Eagles will throw a lot, but I’m thinking the 49ers will as well and Smith could be in for one of his three touchdown games.
Lindsay 2:40 am on 11/26/2009 Permalink |
SO I am concerned about all my positions this week. I have Romo as my QB and he has been seriously lacking the past 2 weeks. My B/U is Orton, but I don’t really want to play him either. I could pick up Hasselback or A. Smith?
Also for receivers, I need 3, I have Colston, Smith (nyg), L. Evans, Collie, Meacham, Floyd, Bess…I can also get D. Avery of the FA list.
For RBs I need 2…I have R. Williams(obvious), Forte, R. Cartwright…there isn’t anything on waivers or the FA list except J. Lewis, C. Taylor, K. Faulk and Buckhalter.
I also need a flex option from the above names.
I am in a PPR league, so that is the only consolation for Forte since he catches passes more than he runs!
And for defense I had Arizona, but am looking to pick up another one…Atlanta or Seattle? THX a bunch!
Brandon 8:00 am on 11/29/2009 Permalink |
Sorry we didn’t get to this before the Thursday games Lindsay, but who did you end up playing? I’d start Rock Cartwright over Matt Forte if that is an option. At receiver, go with Marques Colston and Donnie Avery if you can get him still (I’m assuming you already played Steve Smith? For your flex spot, go with Matt Forte and hope he has another 8 catch, 120 yard performance to compliment his 30 yards or so he gets on the ground. For your defense, go with Seattle against Kyle Boller and the Rams for sure.
Lindsay 1:04 pm on 11/29/2009 Permalink
No problem…I know you guys are busy…Thx for the response though. I did end up playing ROmo and thankfully he did well. I also played Smith. I picked up Avery but couldn’t get him in my lineup in time, so hopefully both Meacham and Colston pull some good numbers, cause those are the other WRs I have in my lineup besides Smith. I also used Seattle, so we’ll see how that goes too. Thx
