Here are our waiver wire candidates for week ten. As usual, you’ll find players who are either [Startable], a [Stopgap] to get you past a BYE or injury, [Worth a look] and spot on your bench, or [One-week-wonder]s who don’t warrant a roster spot, so you make your roster moves accordingly. You’ll also see the percent owned in parenthesis (and if you see an asterisk by the players name, it means they’re on a BYE this week.)
As with last week, there aren’t a lot of new names on the list…but maybe Chris Chambers, Devery Henderson and Brandon Pettigrew can help your team if you’re in a bind…
Quarterbacks
- [Stopgap] Matt Cassel, KC (50%) – In the two games leading to the BYE, Cassel looked absolutely terrible. This past weekend though he seemed to find his poise once again (the addition of Chris Chambers apparently helped!) Cassel is a little risky, but when he’s throwing the ball well, he can put up decent numbers for your fantasy team.
- [Stopgap] Mark Sanchez, NYJ (47%) – Before going into the BYE, Sanchez put up some good numbers against the Dolphins. He has a nice match-up with the Jaguars in week 10 as well.
- [Stopgap] Alex Smith, SF (37%) – It wasn’t pretty against the Titans (3 INT, 1 fumble lost), but he ended the game with 286 yards and two touchdown passes. Smith isn’t the most accurate quarterback out there, but he should be safe to get you a touchdown or two each week.
- [Worth a look] Vince Young, TEN (16%) – Vince Young’s numbers won’t blow you away, but he has the Titans on a two game winning streak as the team’s starting quarterback and has a touchdown (and no interceptions) in each game.
- [Worth a look] Josh Freeman, TB (6%) – Not sure if Freeman or a lousy Green Bay defense deserve more credit for his 205 yard, three touchdown performance. Don’t start him quite yet, but keep an eye out and see how he does in the upcoming weeks.
Running Backs
- [Stopgap] Beanie Wells, ARI (72%) – Wells had one of his best games as a pro against the Bears this past Sunday and if the team can rack up big leads like they did on a regular basis, Beanie should get more opportunities.
- [Stopgap] Correll Buckhalter, DEN (66%) – He’s losing more and more carries to Knowshon Moreno, but Buckhalter is still the tailback of choice when it comes to the passing game. He’s usually good for around 10 points or so if you’re in a bind.
- [Stopgap] Jamal Lewis, CLE (54%) – Lewis should be rested and ready to go following the BYE…but he still plays for Cleveland.
- [Stopgap] Justin Fargas, OAK (35%) – It looks like Darren McFadden could be returning after the team’s BYE week, but Fargas is still the starter for now.
- [Stopgap] Ladell Betts, WAS (19%) – Clinton Portis left Sunday’s game with a concussion and if he’s not able to play for a week or so, Betts will be the guy running it for Washington.
- [One-week-wonder] Derrick Ward, TB (39%) – He had a few catches for 54 yards and a score, but did absolutely nothing in the run game.
Wide Receivers
- [Startable] Devery Henderson, NO (61%) – He’s probably more of a “Worth a look” candidate, but both he and Robert Meachem (below) have such great match-ups the next two weeks (Rams, Bucs.) Henderson isn’t find the endzone consistently this year, but he’s got 11 catches for 210 yards over the past three games.
- [Startable] Mike Wallace, PIT (60%) – With Ben Roethlisberger throwing the ball better than most quarterbacks in the league, his number three receiver is putting up solid numbers as well. He only catches two or three balls a week, but he turns those into 50-70 yards and is good for a touchdown every once in a while. I especially love Wallace in keeper leagues.
- [Stopgap] Patrick Crayton, DAL (59%) – Worth a lot more in leagues that award for kick returns, but he’s the fourth or fifth option in the passing game at this point.
- [Stopgap] Laveranues Coles, CIN (45%) – With Chris Henry done for the season with a broken arm, Coles should see even more looks.
- [Stopgap] Earl Bennett, CHI (34%) – If Devin Hester is not 100% for next week’s game, Bennett will be the beneficiary.
- [Worth a look] Malcom Floyd, SD (50%) – With Chris Chambers’ departure, Floyd is getting an opportunity to prove he has what it takes to be a starter in the NFL. Let’s hope this past Sunday’s performance isn’t an indication of what he has to offer.
- [Worth a look] Andre Caldwell, CIN (42%) – As with Coles (above), Caldwell will see more action with Chris Henry out for the season.
- [Worth a look] Chris Chambers, KC (24%) – Wow, talk about a waiver claim paying immediate dividends! Chambers will not score two touchdowns on a weekly-basis, but it’ll be interesting to see how many looks he gets from Cassel in the next few weeks.
- [Worth a look] Robert Meachem, NO (21%) – I wanted to list him as a One-week-wonder, but he racked up some receptions this past weekend and has some awesome match-ups the next two weeks.
- [Worth a look] Sammie Stroughter, TB (6%) – He now has three catches in each of the past four games and had a touchdown this Sunday. If Antonio Bryant is forced to miss more time, Stroughter should continue to see more looks in the Tampa Bay passing game.
- [One-week-wonder] James Jones, GB (7%) – If you’re a big risk taker, maybe Jones is the guy for you. He has a touchdown in three of the past four games, but has done so on a very low number of catches and usually finds the endzone only if he breaks a really long touchdown reception.
- [One-week-wonder] Jason Hill, SF (0%) – Apparently quarterback Alex Smith picks a receiver and proceeds to throw all his touchdowns to that one guy for the entire game. This week it was Jason Hill (two TD’s.) Next week it will not be Jason Hill…that is for sure.
Tight Ends
- [Stopgap] Zach Miller, OAK (52%) – He’s JaMarcus Russell’s #1 target in the passing game, but he still plays for the Raiders and should only be used in an emergency.
- [Stopgap] Dustin Keller, NYJ (47%) – He should be all rested up following the BYE and ready to pick up where he left off against the Dolphins in week eight (where he had 76 yards and a score.)
- [Stopgap] * Kevin Boss, NYG (44%) – The Boss Man is on a BYE in week 10, but he had a touchdown in the past two games and seems to be one of Eli’s favorite targets in the redzone at the moment.
- [Worth a look] Brandon Pettigrew, DET (8%) – Pettigrew had the best game of his career on Sunday, catching seven passes for 70 yards and his first career touchdown. This is the type of game he was drafted for and he should only get better as he and Matt Stafford get more experienced.
- [One-week-wonder] Joey Haynos, MIA (0%) – He has a touchdown in two straight weeks…and should remain a free agent.

Jamaal Charles?
Brandon 5:43 pm on 11/09/2009 Permalink |
I usually don’t include players that are already owned in around 80% of the Yahoo leagues out there and Charles is owned in 79%. Plus, he only got six carries (and caught three passes) with LJ out this past weekend…so he’s not a strong play anyways.
Amir 12:12 pm on 11/10/2009 Permalink
With LJs departure are they just not gonna run the ball anymore? Any chance Kolby Smith sees action if Charles is ineffective?
Brandon 2:43 pm on 11/11/2009 Permalink
Smith could very well see action right away, but I don’t think it’s going to make much of a difference. If you’re looking for 3-4 points out of the RB position, then feel free to take a chance on him.
F Chuck 9:55 am on 11/10/2009 Permalink |
Chris Chambers or Ladell Betts? I have the 1st. pick this week on the waiver wire?
Matt 10:02 am on 11/10/2009 Permalink |
Depends on your needs, really – Portis will probably be back in a week or two, so if you need points right now (because your team is only borderline for the playoffs and every week is important), then it might be smart to pick up Betts and get what you can out of him before Portis returns. If you aren’t desperate for short-term points, Chambers is a better bet to continue to produce later in the season.
F Chuck 10:13 am on 11/10/2009 Permalink
It is a keeper league but I wouldn’t keep either one. In reality it is more about “sticking it to” my competitors as I have a losing record in this league. Thanks for the “take”, F CHUCK…
Squish 10:25 pm on 11/11/2009 Permalink |
If you’re only interested in pissing off then Betts is the better grab since he’ll likely be the most coveted of the week.
Jojo 11:26 am on 11/10/2009 Permalink |
Looking ahead I have CHI def and GB def..I know?? Who should I cut ties with and which defense should I look to pick up moving forward? Is Cincy worth a look?
Matt 10:01 am on 11/11/2009 Permalink |
The Bears still have to face Minnesota twice and Philly and Green Bay once each. I wouldn’t start them in any of those games, so that doesn’t leave you with much reason to hold onto them. Green Bay’s upcoming schedule is better but not stellar.
The Bengals, on the other hand, have Oakland, Cleveland, Detroit and Kansas City on the menu in coming weeks. All juicy matchups. They’re by far a better bet than the two you have now.
Squish 10:24 pm on 11/11/2009 Permalink
I agree with Matt. Though if Arizona is available grab them since they have a ridiculously good playoff schedule. And they shouldn’t be too shabby against a Seattle team they literally destroyed last time either.
Jojo 11:30 am on 11/10/2009 Permalink |
Also, I have J. Cutler and only him. Should I pick up Sanchez, Freeman or T. Edwards for matchups?
Brandon 2:27 pm on 11/11/2009 Permalink |
I wouldn’t play any of those QB’s over Cutler.
Squish 11:55 pm on 11/11/2009 Permalink
I could almost lean towards Sanchez but with Cutler facing such a good run defense, he’ll be airing it out all day and thus has to be played here.
Trevor 1:52 pm on 11/10/2009 Permalink |
On a different not i need to pick up a defense to start since the NYG are on a bye. available are TEN vs. buf, CAR vs. atl, KC vs. oak, OAK vs. kc,
Brandon 2:29 pm on 11/11/2009 Permalink |
I’m high on Tennessee vs Buffalo this weekend. I think the Titans are starting to put it together and who knows what Trent Edwards is going to do for the Bills in his first game back from injury.
Squish 10:23 pm on 11/11/2009 Permalink
Yeah, I think Tennessee is getting it together too and Buffalo is as good a matchup as any.
Brandon 9:52 am on 11/16/2009 Permalink |
You go with Tennessee? Defense of the week.
Trevor 2:08 pm on 11/16/2009 Permalink
yep i went with the titans my best friends team btw haha it was a good choice. thanks for the advice guys. this website rules
Brandon 2:18 pm on 11/16/2009 Permalink
Nice! Glad we could help. However, I’m not sure I can predict the defense that scores two touchdowns every week…but I’ll do my best!
Amir 5:02 pm on 11/10/2009 Permalink |
I own Jason Witten and no other tight ends. He gets a lot of targets every week but is currently the 15th ranked TE in my 10 team league. Do I keep taking my chances with him? There are some free agent TEs that beat him but none of them are consistant? Pick them up? Blah blah blah — whats you take on his fantasy season?
Brandon 2:31 pm on 11/11/2009 Permalink |
I still like Jason Witten down the stretch. He is getting looks from Romo every week, which is more than you can say for a bunch of the borderline TE’s out there. it would be nice if he saw some more looks in the redzone, but hopefully that will happen over the second half of the season.
Squish 12:01 am on 11/12/2009 Permalink |
I’m in a similar situation in a couple leagues. Unfortunately, unless you were lucky enough to grab Celek early on, you’re probably stuck starting Witten the rest of the year. Unlike Brandon though, I don’t see him getting any better. Dallas has the 28th toughest TE schedule for the rest of the year. It’s unlikely they’ll get any better for TE scoring if they haven’t done it so far. That being said, your TE wire is likely slim pickings so you’ll want to stay with Witten who constantly outperforms his matchups. He might have a few big games in him down the stretch.
Now if you have a roster spot free, it may be worth picking up Pettigrew as a insurance policy that might turn into a borderline starter. Once Calvin Johnson is back in form in Detroit, Pettigrew will likely get less coverage applied to him. It’s a longshot but probably worth a look.

Brandon 2:37 pm on 11/11/2009 Permalink |
I like Henderson over Meachem and Gates over Celek this week. As for dropping anyone, I’d stick with what you got.
Porter 4:00 pm on 11/11/2009 Permalink
Gates over Celek..Really?? IDK, I can go Henderson over Meachem, but why Gates, he had two huge drops against NY and Celek has been $$ last two weeks.
Brandon 4:10 pm on 11/11/2009 Permalink
Celek has only been money the past two weeks because he’s found the endzone in each. Even with his dropped passes, Antonio Gates isn’t going to be ignored when the Chargers get in the redzone. The Eagles are the second worst team in the league when it comes to points allowed to the tight end position.
Porter 4:16 pm on 11/11/2009 Permalink
OK, and you think Henderson and Burleson over Holmes at WR?
Brandon 5:25 pm on 11/11/2009 Permalink
Yeah, they have better match-ups.
Jojo 12:05 pm on 11/11/2009 Permalink |
Housh or B. Edwards this week??
Brandon 2:33 pm on 11/11/2009 Permalink |
Braylon Edwards is a higher risk, but higher reward play this week against the Jaguars. Go with him and hope he catches a touchdown.
Squish 10:21 pm on 11/11/2009 Permalink
I agree, I just can’t trust any Seattle WR against Arizona this week after their outing last time against them.
Luke 12:39 pm on 11/11/2009 Permalink |
Hey, Ochocinco or Greg Jennings this week?? Ocho didnt do much against the steelers in week 3 but then Jennings hasnt done much all season! What do you think? Its PPR league. thanks
Brandon 2:35 pm on 11/11/2009 Permalink |
Tough one there, as you’d like to get both of them into your line-up. I’m leaning towards Chad Ochocinco though to avenge himself against the Steelers this time.
Squish 10:20 pm on 11/11/2009 Permalink |
In a ppr league I’d have to go with Jennings. Jennings is historically very good against Dallas and has averaged almost 20 points per game in his 2 outings against them. The Ocho is averaged only about 14 points per game against the Steelers in his last 4 against them. He plays particularly poorly against them on the road so I wouldn’t look for him to have too big a day this week @ PIT.
LT 8:00 pm on 11/11/2009 Permalink |
Hey Brandon! Mr. Andre Johnson is on bye… who should I start, Devery Henderson or Austin Collie? My other wide is Reggie Wayne…
Squish 10:06 pm on 11/11/2009 Permalink |
I like Henderson straight up but I do think Collie will have a far bigger role in the game than he will. The only thing knocking Henderson above Collie is the fact that Collie has an injury of sorts from last week. It may be healed already but I’ll still take Henderson over him for that reason.
Brandon 9:59 am on 11/12/2009 Permalink |
Go with Henderson this week, who has a great match-up with the Rams and should get a few looks on deep routes from Drew Brees.
MattyIce02 9:17 pm on 11/11/2009 Permalink |
need help…who should I start in my OP this week…Matt Forte or hope Kyle Orton rebounds??? Also, should I go with the Saints @ STL. or Vikings vs. DET for defense???
Squish 10:02 pm on 11/11/2009 Permalink |
If the scoring is standard, Orton should be a better play than Forte this week. Forte has a better matchup but QBs are always good for more points since their chance of scoring TDs is much higher.
As for the defense, it’s really a toss up. I personally like the Saints. they aren’t the best in ground defense but they should be ahead all day forcing a horrible STL passing offense to be very active all day. The Vikings are a good play too but their passing defense scares me. Sure they won’t allow much on the ground but how much will Detroit really be running the ball? I’d say NO is your best bet this week. They may not get many sacks but they get turnovers like nobody else and almost 3rd of their TOs go for TDs. I like their chances.
MattyIce02 11:17 pm on 11/11/2009 Permalink
thanks squish…the scoring is standard by the way, I feel like Forte has a tough matchup with the niners (which is why I’m undecided) but I feel like the Broncos will run..run…run….all day not giving Orton many attempts?? what do you think…still go with Orton??
Squish 11:49 pm on 11/11/2009 Permalink
I’d say yes. In standard scoring, Orton is predicted to have slightly more points and I think everyone can agree that he has a much bigger upside simply from being a QB. On the other hand, Forte faces a top 5 rush defense and Chicago has more or less become a passing team.
I like Orton more because his defense should get him more chances to score TDs. Even if they run a lot, I still think he’ll get more red zone chances than Chicago will have against SF. Chicago’s defense on the other hand is shoddy at best right now. I have them losing that game which doesn’t bode well for Forte since Chicago will likely be down all game.
It’s really up to you. The projected scoring for the two players is about the same. It’s just my personal rule to play a QB in a flex when you can even if that QB has a horrible matchup. In one league I’ll be playing Alex Smith over Tomlinson this week. I’ve done similar things all year and am leading the league in scoring. But that’s just my rule. You can do what you want. I don’t think it will make too big a difference (in this situation) either way.
Brandon 10:32 am on 11/12/2009 Permalink |
I have to agree with Squish here on the Orton/Forte debate. I don’t think the Broncos offense is good enough to get them into a position where they can completely abandon the pass. Orton will throw plenty and should get a touchdown or two (hopefully to my boy Brandon Marshall!)
As for your defense, both are great plays. I like the Saints this week though against Marc Bulger and the Rams, who are almost guaranteed to throw a pick or two against New Orleans. If they can take one back to the house, all the better!
Mattyice02 11:08 am on 11/12/2009 Permalink
Thanks..Squish/Brandon, Orton it is
Ryan 11:14 pm on 11/11/2009 Permalink |
Who should I start at TE this week. Jeremy shockey or Winslow. I am worried that shockey is playing a easy team and they may not air it to much. Winslow on the other hand is a roller coaster. Shockey the safer play?
Ryan 11:21 pm on 11/11/2009 Permalink |
Oh yeah one more question. Would you play Chargers defense or the titans defense this week? Seems to me the Titans have a easy opponent in the bills. The chargers play the eagles. What do you think?
Brandon 10:36 am on 11/12/2009 Permalink
Go with Shockey and the Titans. If you’re worried about the Saints running the ball a lot, just remember, they have to score a few touchdowns first (most likely through the passing game) before feeling safe and switching to the PT Cruiser and the running game.
Squish 11:54 pm on 11/11/2009 Permalink |
Shockey is definitely the safer play. Wait another game to see how Freeman plays before you put your trust completely in Winslow.
I’ve got to go with Tennessee for your defense. Like you said, they have a far better matchup. They also have gotten some key players back recently and should hit their real form in a week or two. The Chargers are facing an Eagle’s offense that is really starting to hit its stride. Play the Titans defense for sure!
ryan 4:17 pm on 11/12/2009 Permalink
Ok I will toss another question in here. Should I trade winslow for maclin. My other WR’s are randy moss, wallace, and cotchery. I am working on a rb but it does not look like that is going to happen. Would you make this trade winslow for maclin?????
Brandon 10:27 am on 11/13/2009 Permalink
This trade seems pretty fair, just to provide you with some depth at the WR position. You start three receivers and only have three on your roster?
ryan 10:37 pm on 11/13/2009 Permalink |
I actually start only 2 usually. Randy moss or wallace/cotchery. I start 3 rbs in Frank Gore, mendehall, and addai. I will put one WR incase of a bye or something.
mike 1:05 pm on 11/15/2009 Permalink |
hopefully someones still here helping… got a confused WR slot im trying to fill. It literally comes down to me playing devery henderson or mike wallace…with my other WR being larry Fitz… any help would be nice…. i could also put in braylon edwards in the WR role.
now for QB, I have Matt Cassel, Matt Ryan and Kyle Orton and they all seem strong…though i do seem to be leaning to start Matt Cassel over the other two.
Thanks for anything even though its a little late on the notice
Brandon 1:27 pm on 11/15/2009 Permalink |
Hey Mike, at wide receiver I’d go with Devery Henderson, who has a much better match-up and has been solid the past few weeks.
At quarterback, I’m not high on any of those guys this week, but if I had to pick one, I’d go with Matt Ryan, with Roddy White scheduled to start and provide a big target for him. Good luck!
mike 1:40 pm on 11/15/2009 Permalink
yeah im not high on any of those QBs either but if life gives you lemonade…..
Mike 2:38 pm on 11/15/2009 Permalink
guess going with Orton wouldnt have been too bad of an idea…lol
