Here is the first edition of The Wire, our weekly waiver wire list. The Wire is organized into four categories: Get ‘em in there, Pick up and hold, Stopgaps, and Pretenders. “Get ‘em in there” are the players worth of a start right away, while “Stopgaps” are the players who will get you through a short-term injury or bye week. “Pick up and hold” is just what is sounds like and “Pretenders” are those players who might have had one good week and immediately picked up in every Yahoo Public league out there…don’t waste a roster spot and waiver claim on them. As it’s early in the season, this list is fairly long at the moment because a bunch of undrafted players come away with some unexpected stats. As the season progresses though, the law of averages will come into play and the cream will rise to the top, so this list will get shorter and more useful. Anyways, here are some players to check out as we move into week two of the fantasy football season:
Get ‘em in there
- Carnell “Cadillac” Williams, RB, Buccaneers – While he might not run for 97 yards and a touchdown every week in this running-back-by-committee system (especially once Earnest Graham decides he’s warmed the bench enough), it looks like Cadillac is healthy once again and should put up decent numbers as long as he stays that way. He makes for a good RB3 candidate to keep in rotation during tough match-ups, bye weeks and injuries.
- Jeremy Shockey, TE, Saints – The difference between Shockey and Ben Watson is that we know Shockey is capable of putting up the kind of numbers he did this weekend on a consistent basis if he can keep his head on straight and stay healthy. He won’t get the most yardage of any tight end out there, but he’s always a threat in the red-zone, something you want from the TE spot on your roster. With the Saints passing game already running on all cylinders, Shockey makes a decent play as your teams tight end…as long as you’re not replacing Gates, Witten, etc.
Stopgaps
- Davone Bess, WR, Dolphins – Bess won’t get a lot of touchdowns, but he should rack up receptions as Pennington uses him heavily in the short passing game. He’s a decent play depending on the
- Washington DEF – They get the honor of playing St. Louis this weekend, who were blanked by the Seahawks on Sunday. Enough said.
- Mike Bell, RB, Saints – If no one needed his services during week one, there is a chance that he’ll be a free agent still. Until Pierre Thomas comes back and regains the top spot in the Saints rushing game, Bell has fantasy value.
- Kevin Kolb, QB, Eagles – Although the team has signed Jeff Garcia, it looks like Kolb will be the quarterback for the Eagles this weekend against the Saints if McNabb doesn’t play. Kolb wasn’t anything special in the preseason, but if you’re struggling to find a startable quarterback and you want to gamble…
- Ricky Williams, RB, Dolphins – Williams will get a few carries each week and the team has no problem using him in the passing game and around the goalline. Ronnie Brown is still the main man in Miami though.
- Fred Jackson, RB, Bills – I’m not sure if he’s a free agent in your league, as he should have been handcuffed to Marshawn Lynch in the draft, but if he is he’s worth a pickup until Lynch returns. Even then, he should continue to get a decent amount of work as long as he remains productive. He makes a decent flex play for your team while Marshawn is out.
Pick up and hold
- Joe Flacco, QB, Ravens – Flacco had a great first game, throwing for over 300 yards and three touchdowns, but he needs to show me one or two more good performances before I go plugging him into my lineup. Grab him as your backup if you had the likes of Jake Delhomme, Chad Pennington or Brady Quinn on your bench.
- Nate Burleson, WR, Seahawks – Looks like Burleson will be one of the top targets in the Seahawks passing game, with seven receptions for 74 yards and a touchdown on Sunday. Not a bad guy to add to your bench to provide some depth.
- Patrick Crayton, WR, Cowboys – Looks like Crayton is the primary deep threat in the Cowboys offense, reeling in four catches for 135 yards and a score. The touchdown was an 80 yard bomb, so don’t expect that every week, but he’s still getting some attention from Romo and could help your team out if you’re in a bind.
- Todd Heap, TE, Ravens – Is this the resurrection of Heap? Let him put up at least two weeks worth of stats before you sticking him into your lineup.
- Mark Clayton, WR, Ravens – Seems that everyone on the Ravens saw a boost in their numbers this weekend. Is Flacco maturing rapidly or did he get lucky? If the passing game continues like it did this weekend, Clayton should see a lot of looks.
- Devery Henderson, WR, Saints – He’s one of the main deep threats in the Saints passing game, but don’t expect 103 yards and a touchdown every week (remember, they were playing the Lions.) If he can become more consistent, he might be worthy of a start at some point in the season.
- Robert Meachem, WR, Saints – Same as Henderson.
- Antwaan Randle El, WR, Redskins – While he ended up third on the WR depth chart coming into the season, he was Jason Campbell’s favorite target (other than Chris Cooley), catching seven passes for 98 yards. Probably worth a bit more in PPR leagues.
- Justin Gage, WR, Titans – When the Titans decided to throw the ball, Gage was the primary target. Don’t expect a touchdown every week, but if the ground game is held in check, expect Tennessee to air it out frequently and Gage get a lot of looks.
- Kenny Britt, WR, Titans – The rookie had a great game, catching four passes for 85 yards, including a 57 yard bomb. He will most likely provide the deep threat for Tennessee this season and is a good candidate for a keeper league.
- Laurent Robinson, WR, Rams – Possibly the lone bright spot in the Rams disaster this weekend. Make him prove his consistency before you add him to your roster.
- Louis Murphy, WR, Raiders – He seemed to be one of JaMarcus Russell’s favorite targets, but as a rookie it’ll be interesting if he can stay consistent. Once Chaz Schilens returns, will he still be the go-to guy in the passing game? Too many questions now to put him in your lineup.
Pretenders
- Benjamin Watson, TE, Patriots – As a Patriots fan I have to give Watson props on last night’s game, but I can’t recommend you pick him up yet. He’s always had the potential, but consistency was never one of Watson’s strong spots.
- Mark Sanchez, QB, Jets – As a Patriots fan I have to recommend you don’t add Sanchez to your roster…I mean, I’d wait to see what he can do against the Patriots this weekend before making any rash decisions on the rookie. If you’re in a keeper league, he has more value of course.
- Brandon Stokley, WR, Broncos – He had a single once-in-a-lifetime catch and has no fantasy value until Kyle Orton can prove that he even knows how to throw the ball to his primary receivers (Brandon Marshall and Eddie Royal.)
- Miles Austin, WR, Cowboys
- Robert Royal, TE, Browns
- Mario Manningham, WR, Giants – I’m not convinced that this won’t be a revolving door in terms of which receiver catches a touchdown each week. Once one of them can become a consistent threat, I’ll think about adding them to my roster.

Good solid list you’ve got there! You hit about every major waiver target!
I’m still not buying into Cadillac Williams in that offense. I mean he only got 13 carries which is not enough to make him a useful back against most defenses. I’d much rather have Fred Jackson right now as he is poised to keep the starting role after Lynch gets back (if he continues to impress). Leon Washington should also be grabbed if he’s available. And keep an eye on the situation in SD. Sproles may just end up having a much larger role in that offense than anyone predicted.
I’m not investing in the TEs quite yet. Sure Shockey had 2 TDs but they played the Lions. I have to think he won’t duplicate the feat. Ditto for Heap who basically had the most receiving yards in a game week 1 that he has ever had since 2007.
In the same sense, the WRs aren’t really exciting me yet. Crayton only had one big play and wasn’t targeted enough for my taste. Same goes for Manningham and Meachem. I feel like Randle El won’ duplicate his performance either. He’s only hit the 7 reception mark once in his career so this week can be considered a fluke.
Some legitimate WR pickups in my mind are Bess, Burleson, Clayton, Robinson, Gage and Henderson all who got plenty of targets. I’m still on the fence of Britt but I’d definitely pick up others before him. A pick not mentioned that I’d at least watch is Louis Murphy who is looking like Russell’s only WR target in Oakland.
As for QBs, definitely grab Flacco if available but I doubt he will be in most leagues. Think about taking a chance on Jeff Garcia (not Kolb) who may start for the Eagles in next week’s high flying shootout against NO. Also, I think Sanchez maybe be worth watching (not picking up yet). As of right now, Sanchez schedule alone makes in useless to own him but things change quick in defenses.
For the defense crowd, I like grabbing Atlanta for next week because they’ll be playing a Carolina offense that looked like the next Detroit Lions against the Eagles. Atlanta won’t get that kind of output but they will do well. Washington and Denver are also worth adds for their matchups next week.
As for kickers, Prater may just be this year’s Bironas. He looked great on two long FGs this week and should be expected to put up even better numbers this week.
Anyway, that’s my take!

I had Anthony Gonzalez as a starter this week but with his injury, I’m thinking about dropping him for someone on the waiver wire. My other WRs are Lance Moore, Derrick Mason, Roddy White, and Earl Bennett.
Free agents consist of Kenny Britt, Michael Clayton, Michael Jenkins, Chansi Stuckey, Devery Henderson, Louis Murphy, and all other Colts WRs except Wayne & Gonzalez.
Or instead of dropping Gonzalez, should I consider dropping Bennett for one of the players I listed above?
Thanks guys!

It looks like Gonzalez will be out for about half the fantasy season at a minimum, so it probably doesn’t make sense to keep him on your roster. Definitely don’t get of Earl Bennett at this point, as Cutler was looking his way ALL day long on Sunday. Of the free agents you mention, I’d go with Michael Clayton, who seems to be a favorite target of Byron Leftwich.

I am trying to find my team identity. In my 12-team league we start 1 QB, 2 RB’s, 3 WR’s, 1 TE, 1 Kicker, 1 Team D, and 1 Defensive player and have three bench spots for any position.. My team now consists of:
QB Peyton Manning
RB Clinton Portis
RB Ray Rice
WR Chad Ochocinco
WR Devery Henderson
WR Braylon Edwards
TE Ben Watson
K Rob Bironas
TD San Diego
D Eric Weddle
(Bench)
RB Steven Jackson
WR Justin Gage
WR Donnie Avery
Now, I am looking to improve my WR’s and possibly TE position.
Notable Free Agent TE’s available are V. Shiancoe, Heath Miller, Brent Celek, Keven Boss, Robert Royal, Bo Scaife and Vernon Davis.
Notable WR’s are:
Michael Clayton, Earl Bennett, Antwan Randal El, Josh Morgan, Laurent Robinson, Mike Jenkins, Bryant Johnson, Davone Bess, Legedu Naanee, Marc Bradley, Issac Bruce, Pierre Gracon and Austin Collie …. Also, I have a trade offer I am contemplating where I would send Braylon Edwards in exchange for Don Driver.
Would you add anyone on this list and drop anyone from my team if this was your squad? I have good feelings about Bennett, Clayton, Shiancoe, Collie and/or Garcon (whoever fills in for Gonzalez, really).
Also, Dareen Spoles is available and even though I have three pretty solid RB’s in my mind and can only start two, I was thinking of grabbing him as a backup and possibly dealing Jackson or Portis.
Thanks for your feedback.

J, I wouldn’t give up on your WR situation yet. It looks fine to me. Hang onto Watson at TE too just to see if the first game was a fluke or not. Your Rb situation is fine and doesn’t need improvement.
The one change I would make is at your defensive position. If you can play any defender, the choice should always be to go with an LB be cause they make more plays than DBs or DLs. I’d drop Weddle and try to grab one teams MLB. I’m thinking Ruud, Beason, Ryans, Willis, Harrison, Ware, or London Fletcher unless you have some wacky defensive scoring system

Of the free agent wide receivers in your league, I really like Earl Bennett, as Cutler seems to love throwing his way. Davone Bess will get a lot of receptions as well, but won’t find the endzone very often, so he’s really only useful in PPR leagues for the most part. I like Bennett better than Devery Henderson, who has never been the most consistent receiver out there (and the team has plenty of other options.) You might keep Henderson around another week to see if he is indeed the real deal this year though before you make any moves with your WR corps.
For your tight end, I like Kevin Boss more than Ben Watson, who I’m convinced is a one game wonder based on his history with the Patriots, while Boss should be a consistent target for Eli Manning.
If Darren Sproles is available, definitely grab him. I’m not hearing anything good about Tomlinson and his injury and Sproles will get a lot of carries/catches throughout the season even if LT is healthy. I wouldn’t deal Jackson or Portis at this point unless you can get a good deal, as the other guy will probably be looking to rip you off based on their week one performances.
Hope this helps!

Curious also to what you guys think of this…. Someone has offered me Braylon Edwards for Donald Driver. I am very tempted to do so because I don’t look at Braylon as the type guy who caught 16 TDs two years ago, but still wondering if it is worth to wait it out a bit becuase he is technically a number one guy in Cleveland and still has potential I guess. On the flip side, GB has a few nice matchups against what should be weak defensive teams in the next few weeks, but is a number 2 guy.. Thanks for your advice.
Squish 8:43 pm on 9/16/2009 Permalink |
That’s a toughie. Braylon definitely has more upside but Driver should still be good for 70 receptions this year. It’s really a matter of personal preference. Keep bye weeks in mind when considering the trade.

Sorry, I have Braylon and they are offering me Driver… But yes, I agree, it is a tough one, and it may come down to personal preferance. I may just stick it out for a bit and see how Braylon does this week against Denver. Have an urge to trade one of my RB’s, maybe Jackson for Greg Jennings, but again, may wait it out.. I still feel I need that ‘dynamic’ receiver on my roster to give me a shot at ultimately competing for the title.. I did pick up Sproles as an insurance guy. Again, I only start two RB;s and I now have Portis, Rice, Jackson and Sproles. Ahh, the fun of decision making in fantasy football is great, isn’t it!?

News out of Cleveland is that Quinn has been having all kinds of chemistry problems for Edwards and that it shouldn’t be expected that he’ll match his stats from two years ago with Anderson at the helm (who had better chemistry with him). Hang on to Driver.
