As we head to the CHAMPIONSHIP, there’s a pretty good chance that your team is already set and you are not in need of any desperation picks. Just in case though, here’s a look at the players to target on your league’s waiver wire this week. This list is ordered by the percentage of ESPN leagues in which the player is available, but even if you’re not a ESPN user, it’s a decent indication of how likely you are to find the player on waivers in your league. We also note here how strongly we feel about this pickup with three categories: Instant Starter, Grab ‘n’ Stash, or Desperation Pickup.
LaMont Jordan, RB, Patriots (4.4% owned, Desperation Pickup) – Maybe it was the return to his old team that got him revved up for the game on Sunday, but he somehow racked up 97 yards and a touchdown on just 12 carries. Will he put up these numbers again while splitting carries with Sammy Morris and Kevin Faulk? Probably not. Is it possible? I guess anything’s possible.
DeSean Foster, RB, 49ers (11.4% owned, Desperation Pickup) – If you’re a Frank Gore owner, you should already have Foster on your roster. Otherwise, he’s worth a look as he could get another start this weekend against a bad Rams defense if they decide to rest Gore a little longer. Foster played pretty well last week when given the start, rushing and receiving for a combined 101 yards.
Deion Branch, WR, Seahawks (25.4% owned, Instant Starter) – While he didn’t have quite the game I expected, Branch did lead the team in catches and yards (both tied with tight end John Carlson), as well as targets, so they’re looking his way.
Tashard Choice, RB, Cowboys (30.5% owned, Instant Starter) – Marion has not been a barbarian the past few games and it looks like Choice could be in line for the bulk of the carries for the remainder of the season as Barber nurses a toe injury. Choice has been great in relief of Marion and led the team in rushing and receiving in last weekend’s game.
Cedric Benson, RB, Bengals (36.5% owned, Desperation Pickup) – He had a pretty big game last week against the Redskins, where he rushed/received for a combined 161 yards. Don’t expect this to happen again next week, but he’s worth a shot as an emergency start if somehow you made it deep in the playoffs with very little running back depth.
John Carlson, TE, Seahawks (57.8% owned, Instant Starter) – He’s the 7th best tight end in the league in terms of fantasy points and he has some pretty decent matches over the next two games. If you’re starting someone worse in the Championship game, you might consider checking to see if he’s a free agent.
Matt Schaub, QB, Texans (67.1% owned, Instant Starter) – Shaub has been solid since returning from injury and makes a decent start against an Oakland secondary that was just destroyed by Matt Cassel and the Patriots.
Pierre Thomas, RB, Saints (78.0% owned, Instant Starter) – I assume he’s owned in all competitive leagues out there, but it was another week and another big day for the Saints running back. He adds the straight ahead running style that Reggie Bush can’t offer to the position, but he also catches passes, making him very useful from a fantasy perspective.
Waiver wire DEFENSES of the week: New England (vs ARI), San Francisco (@ STL), Cleveland (vs CIN), and maybe Carolina (@ NYG…if Brandon Jacobs doesn’t play)
Waiver wire KICKERS of the week: John Carney (vs CAR), John Kasay (@ NYG), Joe Nedney (@ STL), Kris Brown (@ OAK)

Hey Brandon,
Thanks for your suggestions with my recievers last week. I made it to the bowl game. I was wondering if you think Torry Holt would be a good start this week. Like before I have Cotchery, Bruce, or Holt. Need 2!!! Let me know.. thanks bro.
e-roc 4:40 pm on 12/16/2008 Permalink |
@Brandon, watch, I’ll start Pierre Thomas this week and he’ll end up with 50 yards and no TDs. Just wait and see… On the bright side, I was able to limp into the Championship game and I’m assured “cash money!” (the way Wilmer Valderrama says it).
Would you start Antonio Bryant over Boldin, Marshall, or Wayne this week? Maybe if it’s snowing in Foxboro?
@Roger, I’m not a pro, but my vote would be for Holt & Bruce.
Brandon 9:15 pm on 12/16/2008 Permalink |
@Roger: I have to agree with e-roc above and recommend you start Torry Holt and Isaac Bruce. Even with the touchdown last weekend, Jericho Cotchery has just been too inconsistent to play at this important juncture in your fantasy season.
Brandon 9:37 pm on 12/16/2008 Permalink |
@e-roc: Hah, yeah…don’t worry, you won’t find Pierre Thomas on my “Miss” list this weekend. I’ve finally drunk the PT kool-aid and believe in him. In terms of which receivers you start, you got quite a crew there! It’s hard for me to recommend you bench any of them for Antonio Bryant, but if you had to pick one, I would say Anquan Boldin (gasp!) Even though Boldin was a machine early in the season, the past few weeks defenses have been keying in on him and his stats have been suffering because of it. Although the Patriots defense isn’t anything to write home about, I think they’ll have a game plan to stop both Boldin and Fitz and make the Cardinals try to run the ball. Bryant has been on fire as of late and it’s hard to bench someone who’s playing that well. So for the short answer, yes…I would bench Boldin for Bryant (and I’ll cross my fingers for you if you listen to my advice!)

Hey guys,
I have some tough decisions this week. For receivers, core is set but I need to choose for my W/T and W/R spots. My choices a D. Branch, D. Hixon, and D. Northcutt.
Also, in running backs, I am at a loss for who to start. I have J. Norwood, J.J. Arrington, T. Choice, M. Moore, and S. Morris. I have constantly been starting Norwood throughout the season and he has consistently produced for me. And I still want to start Arrington because he saved me in my game last week. But I just don’t know what to do after Choice’s strong performance last week and a possibly good matchup for Morris against Arizona D.
Lastly, I have Minnesota’s D, but I’m conidering picking up New Orleans D since they play Detroit this week. Your feelings?

@Pat: In terms of your receivers, I’d go with Branch and Hixon. Dennis Northcutt had a huge game last week, but before that, he hadn’t done anything all season. Also, this week Nortcutt plays a tough Colts pass defense.
For your running backs, I like Sammy Morris and Tashard Choice…especially if Choice gets the start. Norwood, Arrington and Moore all remain as backups used more in the passing game than the rushing game and it’s hard to predict what they’re going to do from week to week.
Finally, for your defense, go with Minnesota. Detroit has actually started putting up some points recently and for some reason I have a feeling that this could be their first win of the season this weekend against an inconsistent Saints team.

@Brandon – Thanks. I’ll be scouring Accuweather.com, Weather.com, and whdh.com (Boston) Sunday morning.
I’m already looking forward to next year’s season/draft.
Brandon 12:31 pm on 12/17/2008 Permalink |
@e-roc: As a Patriots fan, I’m hoping that the conditions are less-than-optimal for the passing game, as I’ll take the New England running game over the ferocious Tim Hightower/J.J. Arrington combo in Arizona any day.

Brandon,
I’ve never commented here, but have definitely used your advice. I’m in the champ. but have had a rough year in terms of RB’s, considering I drafted Addai and W. Parker. At this point my choices are:
K. Smith
S. Morris
J. Addai
W. Parker
T. Choice
D. Foster
Right now, I’m planning on playing Sammy Morris and Kevin Smith. After reading the blog I’m considering subbing one of these out for either T. Choice or D. Foster. What do you think?
Brandon 10:25 pm on 12/17/2008 Permalink |
@Muko: Glad my advice could help you make it to the Championship! In terms of your running backs, I agree with the two that you already were planning to play. Tashard Choice will still probably “backup” Marion Barber, so he’ll have to make the most of his carries, while I simply do not have enough faith in DeSean Foster to recommend you start him in such an important game. Go with Kevin Smith and Sammy Morris and hope they can both repeat their stats from last week.

PLEASE HELP…
I am in the championship game and I am in need of some help. I have Michael Turner and Matt Forte starting at running back, but my flex options are either Sammy Morris or Brandon Jacobs. I have LOVED Jacobs, but he could still be hurt against Carolina . Sammy is playing well, and he is against Arizona too. I can’t decided between the two…..
Brandon 9:08 am on 12/19/2008 Permalink |
@Johnny: At this point it looks like Brandon Jacobs will get the dreaded “game time decision” designation, which is going to be tough for you because the Giants play Sunday night, while the Patriots play Sunday afternoon (1 PM). As it’s the Championship, you really don’t want to gamble on a player to play when you won’t be able to replace him at the last minute (unless you have someone else from the Sunday or Monday night games). I’d go with Sammy Morris, who I think should do well…especially if the weather is detrimental to the passing game. Good luck!

I have another magical issue to ask of you guys… I am going with the Dallas Def at home Saturday night but also have Philly. Is this a good move to leave Dallas in? Also, does anyone see Kurt Warner having a bad game or sitting out some of the game in New England. I am from Boston and the snow is burying us now and Sunday will be messy. Garcia on bench. Throw some ideas if possible. Thanks
Brandon (FFGeekBlog) 5:57 pm on 12/19/2008 Permalink |
@Roger: As you know (I’m down here in CT), the snow is pretty nasty today and there’s supposed to be another storm coming through on Sunday. I’d wait till tomorrow to make the ultimate decision, because A) you want to know when the snow will hit on Sunday and B) you want to make for sure that Jeff Garcia will be starting (although at this point it looks pretty good for that). If the weather will be any factor in Foxboro, go with Garcia. If not, take the chance on Warner who should be able to handle the Patriots secondary quite handily if he can throw the ball.
In terms of your defense, I like both Dallas and Philly this week, but I think you can stick to Dallas at home. The Cowboys have been great on defense lately and we saw what Baltimore does against a good defense last week when they put up a big 9 spot against the Steelers. Good luck!
Brandon (FFGeekBlog) 8:30 pm on 12/19/2008 Permalink |
Looks like Anquan Boldin will not play this Sunday against the Patriots (at least that’s what ESPN just told me), so if you have an alternative, you better plug him into your lineup.

Hope it isn’t to late for some advice, but here goes. I have Rothlesburger, Matt Ryan and and Tyler Thigpen. Any advice on who I should start? I also have Dwanye Bowe on my bench so would it be smart to sit Brandon Jacobs since he is a game time decision and put in Tyler Thigpen and Dwanye Bowe? I am already down 30, opponent had Manning on Thursday. Any advice would be great.
Brandon (FFGeekBlog) 12:18 pm on 12/20/2008 Permalink |
@Mike: I’m not too high on any of those quarterbacks this week, but if I had to pick from the three, I’d go with Matt Ryan who should have a decent day against the Vikings. I don’t like the idea of playing Thigpen AND Bowe, so this will that up. In terms of Bowe or Jacobs, I’d wait until tomorrow morning and see if Jacobs is going to play for sure or not. If he is, I think he’s a better play than Bowe, as Jacobs is more likely to find the endzone.
Mike 10:43 am on 12/21/2008 Permalink |
Should I be starting Brandon Jacobs today. According to CBS, he is listed as questionable and most likely will be playing. My other options aren’t too great and I need to make up a large deficit and playing Jacobs on the off chance he has a great game is my best bet. Have you read anything about his status?
Brandon (FFGeekBlog) 12:14 pm on 12/21/2008 Permalink |
@Mike: According to Yahoo, which was reporting an ESPN news story:
Jacobs said Friday that he expects to play Sunday night against Carolina, Newsday reports. “Yes, I will be out there on the field come Sunday,” Jacobs told 1050 ESPN’s Michael Kay in his weekly spot.
Recommendation: Jacobs practiced well all week, so barring a setback he should be good to go. It’s still a slight risk, however, as the Giants play Sunday night, and any tweak even in warmups could be enough to keep him out. ”
So it looks like Jacobs should play this weekend. If you happen to have Ahmad Bradshaw or Derrick Ward, you could sub them in last minute if things change, but I think you’re safe putting Jacobs in your lineup this week. Good luck!
