Here are our “Hits” and “Misses” for week twelve, listing players you want to make sure are in your lineup, as well as those you might consider shelving for the week (or at least lowering your expectations!) With Turkey Day right around the corner and a record three games being played tomorrow, we needed to post the hits and misses ASAP this week. As usual, I left off a few obvious picks from the list, including Ricky Williams running over the Bills, Larry Fitzgerald smoking the Titans secondary and Greg Jennings beating up on the Lions, but there is still plenty of picks to go around. Hopefully everyone has a great holiday weekend, filled with lots of fantasy football points!
Quarterback
Hits
|
Misses
|
| Brett Favre, Vikings vs CHI – When he’s not throwing multiple touchdowns, he’s throwing for over 300 yards. Either way he’ll get you solid fantasy numbers against an overrated Bears defense that has recently given up five-touchdown performances to Kurt Warner and Carson Palmer. |
Eli Manning, Giants @ DEN – Even in their losing streak the Broncos haven’t allowed a 300 yard passer all year. Last week they held Philip Rivers to just 145 yards through the air and this week I expect the same against Rivers’ NFL draft-mate, Eli Manning. |
| Aaron Rodgers, Packers @ DET – Coming off a huge 344 yard, two score performance against the 49ers, Aaron Rodgers should be ready to go against arguably the worst pass defense in the NFL. |
Joe Flacco, Ravens vs PIT – Flacco started off the season with a bang, but recently he’s been less-than-mediocre (just ask me, I have him in my two biggest leagues!) Even though the Steelers let up two touchdowns to Matt Cassel last week, they hadn’t allowed a passing score in the three games prior to that (although that may have had something to do with Troy Polamalu being in the line-up.) Joe Flacco has been relegated to “game manager” these days and is not startable in fantasy leagues. |
| Josh Freeman, TB @ ATL – Call me crazy, but I have a good feeling about the rookie this week. The Falcons have given up 13 passing scores over the past six weeks and are coming off a pretty big beat down by Eli Manning, who put up 384 yards and three touchdowns. Freeman played poorly against the Saints last week, but if there was a team to turn it around against, the Falcons might be it. |
Matt Cassel, Chiefs @ SD – Just in case you were thinking of playing Cassel after this solid performance against the Steelers last week, don’t. The last time the the Chiefs and Chargers played, San Diego limited Matt Cassel to just 97 yards passing (1 TD, 3 INT) and that was IN Kansas City. |
Running Back
Hits
|
Misses
|
| Thomas Jones, Jets vs CAR – In the past two weeks, the Panthers have been burned by Michael Turner (111 yards) and Ricky Williams (119 yards, 2 TD.) T-Jones should hand out a third straight beating this Sunday. |
Matt Forte, Bears @ MIN – Let me just put out a few numbers here…Matt Forte over past three games: 33, 41, 34 yards rushing. Vikings against the run over the past three games: 38, 65, 9 (!!!) yards allowed. Doesn’t look good for one of the most disappointing players of the 2009 season. |
| Marion Barber, Cowboys vs OAK – Barber almost broke the century mark last week against a tough Redskins defense and gets to play the Raiders on Thanksgiving…a Raiders team that has been absolutely horrid against the run this year. |
LeSean McCoy, Eagles vs WAS – Last time the Eagles and Redskins played, Washington shut down Philly’s running game…and that was with Brian Westbrook in the line-up (at least temporarily.) McCoy should struggle again this week and there are probably better options for your team as you make a final push for a playoff spot. |
| All the waiver wire guys from last week – Jason Snelling, Falcons (vs TB); Justin Forsett, Seahawks (@ STL); Bernard Scott, Bengals vs (CLE.) If they all start, they make very appealing plays. |
Kevin Smith, Lions vs GB – Smith got lucky with a 63 yard reception last week. Otherwise, he’s been very mediocre most of the year. The Packers on the other hand have been one of the best teams in the league against the run these past few weeks and that shouldn’t change against the Lions tomorrow. |
Wide Receiver
Hits
|
Misses
|
| Vincent Jackson, Chargers vs KC – V-Jax hasn’t done a whole lot these past two weeks, but the last time he played the Chiefs, he had his best game (in terms of yardage) of the season (142 yards, TD.) He’ll return to being one of the top wide receivers in the league this week and needs to be in your line-up. |
Steve Smith, Panthers @ NYJ – Darrelle Revis is that good. He’s shutdown Randy Moss two times (along with a slew of other receivers) and Steve Smith should be his next victim. |
| Mike Sims-Walker, Jaguars @ SF – After a week on the “Misses” list, Sims-Walker makes his glorious return to the left side of the list with a match-up against the 49ers. San Francisco was recently abused by Greg Jennings and should have a tough time with Sims-Walker (who has a touchdown in three straight weeks) as well. |
Braylon Edwards, Jets vs CAR – The Panthers were one of the better teams in the league already against wide receivers and now they also have game tape of the Patriots last week, where they limited Edwards to just one catch for 10 yards. Carolina will be looking to do the same. |
| Michael Crabtree, 49ers vs JAX – The Jags are the second worst team in the league against wide receivers (in terms of fantasy points) and are coming off a humbling performance where they allowed T.O. to play like the T.O. of old (and make the Team of the Week!) They’ve given up at least one touchdown to an opposing wide receiver in every game this year and this week that trend should continue…hopefully with Crabtree finding the endzone. |
Mohamed Massaquoi, Browns @ CIN – Remember the last time Massaquoi blew up and was the top waiver pick-up of the week? If not, let me remind you of his numbers the following week: one catch for 16 yards. The Browns passing game is WAY too inconsistent for you to be starting any of their receivers, even if his first big game of the year was against this same Bengals team. |
Tight End
Hits
|
Misses
|
| Jermichael Finley, Packers @ DET – In his first game back from injury, Finley racked up seven catches for 54 yards. While the yardage wasn’t overwhelming, the fact that he caught seven passes means Aaron Rodgers was looking his way often. Playing on the main stage on Turkey Day, I expect a big game from Jermichael, similar to his week four performance against the Vikings. |
Kevin Boss, Giants @ DEN – The Broncos have been one of the best teams in the league against the tight end this season, giving up over 50 yards just twice (along with only two touchdowns.) They shut down Antonio Gates last week and should be able to contain the top TE waiver wire pick-up of week on Thanksgiving. |

I need 2 out of the following, Laurence Maroney, Robert Meachem, Cadillac Williams, Bernard Scott, Devin Hester
Shirley 11:04 am on 11/25/2009 Permalink |
I’d say Bernard Scott and Meacham/Cadillac.
Brandon 4:28 pm on 11/25/2009 Permalink |
Hey John, I have to disagree with Shirley slightly on this one. I agree with Bernard Scott (especially if Cedric Benson is ruled out again), but for your other spot I’d go with Laurence Maroney. I don’t trust Meachem against the Patriots defense, who has been pretty good at shutting down receivers this year.
Chandler 12:46 am on 11/26/2009 Permalink
how do you think Colston going to do?
Matt 4:20 pm on 11/26/2009 Permalink
Colston’s been facing a great deal of double coverage lately and has seen his red zone targets go to others (especially Meachem) who don’t get as much attention from defenses. Hopefully for Colston owners, defenses are soon going to realize that doubling Colston does little good since Brees isn’t particularly dependent on any one target. At this point, though, I’d consider him just a WR2 since Brees is more than happy to spread the ball around and take what defenses are giving him.
Shirley 11:07 am on 11/25/2009 Permalink |
I have a good dilemma, I need to start two RBs: Bernard Scott (vs. CLE), Jason Snelling (vs. TB), Ryan Grant (vs. DET).
I’m tempted to go Scott and Snelling because Scott’s going up against the Brownies and Snelling did great against the Giants last week. BUT Grant IS going up against the Lions…
Dennis 11:12 am on 11/25/2009 Permalink |
I would only start Scott if Benson is going to miss another game.
Shirley 11:28 am on 11/25/2009 Permalink
Sorry for the confusion, the question was posed with the assumption that Scott and Snelling would both start. I also have Michael Turner and Cedric Benson on my team.
e-roc 1:20 pm on 11/25/2009 Permalink |
IMO, you have to start Grant v. the Lions… then sit back and enjoy your turkey, stuffing, and apple pie while the Lions get the stuffing beat out of them again on Turkey Day sans Megatron and Stafford..
Jon 1:34 pm on 11/25/2009 Permalink
Have to start Grant. Great game against Sanfrancisco and only will be better against Detroit. Has been coming on as the season progresses
Brandon 4:26 pm on 11/25/2009 Permalink |
I’d go with Ryan Grant and Jason Snelling out of the three. At least you know Snelling and Grant will get the bulk of the carries, while it’s uncertain how the split will be in Cincinnati, especially if Benson plays.
Johnny 10:23 pm on 11/25/2009 Permalink
I have Snelling and was going to start him but I heard that Turner might play on Sun since he practiced today, should I start Beanie Wells or Reggi Bush?
Shirley 8:50 pm on 11/26/2009 Permalink
I think I read that Norwood may be coming back which would cut into Snelling’s carries.
Matt 7:33 pm on 11/25/2009 Permalink |
Scott’s a must-start if Benson’s out.
Dennis 11:11 am on 11/25/2009 Permalink |
Need help. Pick 2… Pierre Thomas, Smith(NYG), Bernard Scott, Hightower, or Cartwright
Better QB Hasselbeck or Alex Smith?
e-roc 1:18 pm on 11/25/2009 Permalink |
Hasselback has a juicy matchup v. the Rams, but the Seahawks don’t play very well on the road… I think Smith has more upside and is a sneaky start this week at home v. the Jags.
Dennis 2:54 pm on 11/25/2009 Permalink
What about the other part?
Brandon 4:20 pm on 11/25/2009 Permalink |
Hey Dennis, if it turns out that Cedric Benson won’t play, go with Bernard Scott and Pierre Thomas. Otherwise, plug Steve Smith in there. At quarterback, I’d go with Matt Hasselbeck and hope for a repeat of his week one performance against the Rams (minus the interceptions.)
e-roc 1:30 pm on 11/25/2009 Permalink |
@Brandon – was this your way of answering some of my AtG questions? Haha. I guess I’ll be starting T.Jones and stashing McCoy, K.Smith and Mighty Mouse this weekend.
The Crabtree recommendation confuses me because I’m already wondering if Alex Smith > McNabb this week.
Brandon 4:18 pm on 11/25/2009 Permalink |
Hah, no actually, but hopefully it can start answering peoples questions anyways! Anyhow, if it makes you feel better, I’d still start Steve Smith over Michael Crabtree (maybe it confuses more?) I put Steve Smith as a Miss, when compared to other WR1 and WR2’s, while Crabtree is a Hit, when compared to other WR3’s.
In terms of McNabb and Smith, it’s hard to bench McNabb when the team is so pass-oriented. I’d stick with Donovan, even with a tougher match-up.
Jon 1:30 pm on 11/25/2009 Permalink |
I need 1 – Greg Jennings, Steve Smith (NYG), Percy Harvin.
My other two receivers are sydney rice and desean Jackson.
Help.
Brandon 4:13 pm on 11/25/2009 Permalink |
Greg Jennings of course…he’s the one on my Hit list! (Update: He’s not on my hit list, but I mention him in the introduction as a great play!)
ryan 3:07 pm on 11/25/2009 Permalink |
K I have 2 questions this week.
First. Would you start maclin or cotchery?
second. Would you start Mendenhall or F. Jackson (they both have bad matchups)?
Brandon 4:10 pm on 11/25/2009 Permalink |
I’d go with Maclin, just because I think the Eagles will throw twice as much as the Jets (and twice as effectively as Sanchez!) At running back, go with Mendenhall, since there is still a chance Marshawn Lynch could play and steal carries from Jackson.
Mal 5:45 pm on 11/25/2009 Permalink |
Hmm just like one more opinion on these WR (they are waiver dregs)
S Moss (@PHI)
Floyd (KC)
Northcutt (if Megatron doesn’t play) (GB)
Bennett (@MIN)
Britt (ARI)
Brandon 8:30 pm on 11/28/2009 Permalink |
I’m up for taking the risk on Malcom Floyd against the Chiefs this weekend if you haven’t already made your decision.
Helplease 8:53 pm on 11/25/2009 Permalink |
I have a chance to pick up chris chambers off of the waiver wire. Im looking to drop breaston or moss. Im thinking moss this is definitely a smart move ?
Squish 10:10 am on 11/26/2009 Permalink |
I actually made the same move in several leagues. Go ahead and drop Moss and he’s definitely useless this year. Breaston could still have a few big games in him and we know Chambers should be solid the rest of the year thanks to the lack of options in KC.
Helplease 2:16 pm on 11/26/2009 Permalink
Thanks did it and also dropped Breaston while I was at it and grabbed Maclin. After seeing last week where they threw not one pass his way. So this is my team in a must win situation. PPR league where there’s 1 QB 2 RB 2 WR 1 FLEX 1 K 1 DE I went ahead and didn’t play Kevin Smith today against GB. How would you go with this line up. I feel my WRs are all good and have potential for big games it just comes down to match ups. Thanks.
QB Donovan McNabb
Eli Manning NYG
RB Maurice Jones-Drew
Jason Snelling
Kevin Smith DET
WR Chris Chambers
Santonio Holmes
Mike Sims-Walker
Michael Crabtree
Jeremy Maclin
TE Zach Miller
Fred Davis David Akers
DE Arizona Cardinals
Philadelphia Eagles
Thanks again and Happy Thanks Giving !
Sean 11:02 pm on 11/25/2009 Permalink |
1 PPR League for week 12…who would you start at my 2nd RB spot?
Benson, Scott (I realize Benson if he is healthy but could you give me scenarios for which I should avoid either one – i.e. – they are going to split carries), Forsett, Cartwright, B. Wells, Fargas
I really can’t screw this decision up. I’m in a four-way tie with 3 other teams at 6-5. We currently occupy spots 3-6 if the playoffs started today (we only get 6 in out of 12 teams). The team I’m playing is also 6-5.
Squish 10:09 am on 11/26/2009 Permalink |
I think you have to wait to here what’s going on in Cinci. If Benson and Scott both play, Forsett may end up being a better play than either of them. If Benson doesn’t play, definitely play Scott. You’ll have to wait to make your decision.
Allan 8:28 am on 11/26/2009 Permalink |
Help!!!!! Do I start Eli Manning or Warner?
Squish 10:08 am on 11/26/2009 Permalink |
I’d have to go with Warner. It looks like he’s fine to play and he has a great matchup.
Eli’s matchup isn’t too good against a great Denver pass rush that’s third in the league in pass defense.
Go with Warner

Man, I’m torn right now between playing the Eagles defense or Packers defense this week. I think I’ll probably just play the Packer’s defense so I have something to watch today (despite their injuries). They should do fine.
Brandon 8:22 pm on 11/28/2009 Permalink |
Hopefully you did indeed play the Packers, as they ended up with a pretty solid performance!
Trevor 3:01 pm on 11/26/2009 Permalink |
so i have a little dilema. witten who plays today or fred davis?? and another one Seattle or Giants DEF??
Brandon 8:21 pm on 11/28/2009 Permalink |
Who’d you end up playing? Witten had a solid game.
Trevor 11:05 pm on 11/28/2009 Permalink
i went with witten bro. im glad they looked his way often. keep up the good work guys
Brian 6:27 pm on 11/26/2009 Permalink |
I currently have Michael Crabtree. But I was wondering if Percy Harvin might have a better performance this week than him.
Brandon 8:19 pm on 11/28/2009 Permalink |
If your league awards points for return yards, I’d go with Percy Harvin. Otherwise though, I think Crabtree is in for a solid game against the Jaguars this Sunday.
ken 5:34 pm on 11/27/2009 Permalink |
i was hoping for a big game from finley too this week…and then donald lee showed up stealing points from him. GB loves to play “which guy is it going to be this week” with their TE and WR’s. Eff Driver and Lee for stealing points away from my guys Jennings and Finley lol.
Brandon 8:21 pm on 11/28/2009 Permalink |
Although I don’t have any of the Green Bay players on my team, I agree with your thoughts completely! They did their best to make my predictions look less-than-spectacular
Ken 3:39 am on 11/29/2009 Permalink
lol yea. There was no logical reason to see the game turn out that way. Def a shock to see Lee get as many plays and looks as he did with how well Finley played before his injury and after.
And Jennings is frustrating as all hell. I can understand when Rodgers sees pressure…but against the lions…argg
damn you donald driver for robbing greg of his deep passes
ken 3:36 am on 11/29/2009 Permalink |
any thoughts on chris chambers vs devin hester this week?
Brandon 7:48 am on 11/29/2009 Permalink |
Although the Bears offense is a constant source of frustration, I think you want to start Hester today, as his match-up is a lot better and the last time the Chargers/Chiefs played, Matt Cassel had a rough day.
DFonz 11:45 am on 11/29/2009 Permalink |
What do yall think? shoud I start Snelling or Turner?
Brandon 12:45 pm on 11/29/2009 Permalink |
Hard to not go with Turner when he’s playing. Go with The Burner and hope for the best.
