Here are our “Hits” and “Misses” for week eleven, listing players you want to make sure are in your lineup, as well as those you might consider shelving for the week (or at least lowering your expectations!) This week I returned to my previous ways of leaving the most obvious players off the list (Drew Brees @ TB, Maurice Jones-Drew vs BUF,) so we’re left with players you may actually have to think about starting or benching this week. In most leagues the playoffs are rapidly approaching, so this could be a huge week for your team and hopefully some of our advice can help you clinch a spot! Anyways, here we go with the hits and misses…
Quarterback
Hits
|
Misses
|
| Kurt Warner, Cardinals @ STL – This is the first of two dream match-ups Warner has against the Rams this season, with the other possibly coming during your league’s championship week (16.) In recent games against similar quality quarterbacks, St. Louis gave up 235 yards and three touchdowns to Peyton Manning and 223 yards and two scores to Drew Brees. Expect similar numbers from Kurt Warner. |
Tony Romo, Cowboys vs WAS – The Redskins gave up their first two touchdown game to an opposing quarterback last week (and it was Denver of all teams!) Even considering that, they haven’t given up a 300 yard passing game all year and I don’t expect this to be the first. |
| Eli Manning, Giants vs ATL – I’m expecting that the Giants used the BYE to figure out why they’ve been struggling so badly the past few games and should start to turn things around, beginning this weekend against the Falcons. Atlanta has given up major yardage and touchdowns to all sorts of quarterbacks over the past five weeks and the bleeding won’t stop this Sunday. |
Jay Cutler, Bears vs PHI – You know Cutler is not happy about having to follow up his disastrous performance against the 49ers last week with the Eagles. Philadelphia has been racking up the interceptions this year and what better guy to face then Cutler, who leads the league with 17! |
| Ben Roethlisberger, Steelers @ KC – After acquiring Big Ben in a trade for Peyton Manning (other players were also involved, don’t worry), he proceeded to go out and lay an egg against the Bengals. While a bit angry about that, he should redeem himself in a big way against a Chiefs defense that given up huge games to every decent quarterback they’ve played so far this year (Flacco, McNabb, Eli Manning, Romo, Rivers.) |
Joe Flacco, Ravens vs IND – If you forget last weeks game against the Patriots (who can stop Tom Brady anyways?) the Colts have featured one of the most dominant pass defenses in the league this year. Through the frst nine weeks of the season, they only allowed four passing touchdowns and considering Flacco’s recent struggles, he could be in for a long day. |
Running Back
Hits
|
Misses
|
| Rashard Mendenhall, Steelers @ KC – Over the past two weeks, the Chiefs have given up nearly 300 yards and three touchdowns to opposing running backs and only two teams all year haven’t reached the century mark against them. Mendenhall is in for a big day. |
Frank Gore, 49ers @ GB – It hasn’t been easy being a Frank Gore owner this year, but the past three games have been a nice change of pace. However, this week with the team heading to Lambeau, things could regress a bit. The Packers limited the Cowboys three-headed-monster (Barber, Jones, Choice) to just 45 yards last week and should do the same to Gore this weekend. |
| Pierre Thomas, Saints @ TB – Even with a great match-up against the Rams last week, the PT Cruiser wasn’t all that impressive. However, the Saints as a whole still ran the ball successfully. This week Thomas should get back in the groove, against a Tampa Bay team that seems to give up big game after big game to opposing tailbacks. |
Joseph Addai, Colts @ BAL – Addai isn’t racking up the yardage this season, but he does have six rushing and three receiving touchdowns this year. Unfortunately for him, the Ravens have been pretty good at keeping opposing runners out of the endzone and if Joseph can’t get at least a touchdown, his fantasy numbers might not be quite what you needed to make your final push towards the playoffs. |
| Ricky Williams, Dolphins @ CAR – With Ronnie Brown out of the picture, Ricky Williams will get to shoulder the load tonight against a Panthers defense that just got run over by Michael Turner and company. Expect a huge game from High Times’ player of the year. |
Laurence Maroney, Patriots vs Jets – I’m just not high on Maroney this week against a tough Jets defense. Maybe if he hadn’t fumbled away the ball against the Colts near the goal-line it would be a different story… |
Wide Receiver
Hits
|
Misses
|
| Andre Johnson, Texans vs TEN – The Titans have definitely improved since their BYE, but they’ve still given up four touchdowns to the wide receiver position over the past two weeks. Johnson had his way with Tennessee in week two (10 catches for 149 yards and two touchdowns!) and should have another solid game this weekend. |
Randy Moss, Patriots vs NYJ – It pains me to write this, but the Jets have been one of the few teams that were actually able to contain Moss so far this year, when they shut him down to four catches for a whopping 24 yards. While I expect bigger numbers from him this week (and who knows, maybe the team features him in the passing game just to humble Darrelle Revis), just keep your expectations to a minimum so that he doesn’t disappoint you. |
| Marques Colston, Saints @ TB – I assume there are a lot of unhappy Marques Colston owners out there after two straight sub-par games, but don’t bench him quite yet. Tampa Bay has given up huge games to a few big name receivers already this season and Colston should be the next in line. |
Mike Sims-Walker, Jaguars vs BUF – Another receiver I don’t like to downgrade, Sims-Walker has been a waiver-wire hero this year. However, he plays the Bills this weekend, meaning the team will be handing it off to Maurice Jones-Drew 50 times en route to the victory. If Sims-Walker can gain a lot of yards after the few catches he’ll make, he could have a decent day, but don’t get your hopes up. |
| Sidney Rice, Vikings vs SEA – Rice is coming off one of the best games of his career and gets to play one of the worst pass defenses in the league. Over the past four games, the Seahawks have given up eight touchdowns to receivers and a ton of yards. Expect a big day from Favre and his go-to receiver. |
Roy Williams, Cowboys vs WAS – I was going to list Miles Austin here, but due to his recent struggles and the fact that I recently traded for him, I put his partner in crime on the list instead. Williams has become the go-to receiver over the past two weeks, but that could change this week now that opposing defenses (especially one as good as the Redskins) realize that he still has something left in the tank. |
Tight End
Hits
|
Misses
|
| Greg Olsen, Bears vs PHI – With such an aggressive defense, opposing quarterbacks have looked to their tight ends as a safety outlet frequently against the Eagles and the same should happen with Jay Cutler on Sunday night. |
Antonio Gates, Chargers @ DEN – The Broncos have been one of the best teams in the league against the tight end this season, giving up over 50 yards just twice (along with only two touchdowns.) The last time the Chargers played Denver, Gates had five catches for 70 yards, but with the game being in Denver this time, I expect numbers slightly less. |

Have to start 2 RB non-PPR – Options areā¦
Turner
Betts
Portis
Wells
Forte
Thinking Forte + Wells/Betts?
Brandon 5:02 pm on 11/20/2009 Permalink |
Portis and Turner aren’t playing, so that narrows it down a bit. Go with Forte and Wells, who has a good match-up against the Rams.
Anthony 6:10 pm on 11/19/2009 Permalink |
I need three out of the following (atleast one WR): Devin Hester, Cadillac Williams, Laurence Maroney, Chester Taylor, Mike Sims Walker, Robert Meachem, Bernard Scott
I lost Ronnie Brown
Shirley 6:48 am on 11/20/2009 Permalink |
Bernard Scott (if Benson doesn’t play), MSW and I suppose Meachem?
Squish 10:30 am on 11/20/2009 Permalink |
I agree about Scott. If Benson doesn’t start, Scott is a great play against a porous Oakland defense and MSW is definitely your WR as Shirley said. If you start Scott and MSW as your WR, I’m leaning towards Maroney as your flex. If Scott doesn’t start, replace him with Cadillac Williams who has a pretty solid matchup this week at NO. If Scott and Cadillac don’t start, play Maroney MSW and Hester.
As I keep telling everyone, when in doubt play the RBs. Maroney and Cadillac thought not the hottest fantasy commodities will still have a better chance of putting up 10+ points than most WRs. Normally I think about giving Hester the start over them but with Cutler playing the way he is, I’d avoid him since you have roughly equal/better options.
craig 10:43 am on 11/20/2009 Permalink
Well I just woke up and got an interesting e-mail from squish who has no knowledge of football. He actually told you to start betts against dallas who are 7th in the league against the rush this year and betts is banged up. I’d go with Meachem as he is one of the biggest sleepers this week against Tampa Bay who will go way over his projected ending up with 6 to 7 receptions for around 75 yards and possibly a touchdown. If you want real fantasy football advice than go to http://www.thefantasyfootballguru.com. Oh yeah, and squish I’ll go toe to toe with you about football any day of the week you wanabe football analyst.
craig 10:50 am on 11/20/2009 Permalink
sorry i responded in the wrong section but i’d stillgo with meachem over hester or maroney this week as hester is going up against philly even though culter has had two 300 plus passing games in a row. and cadillac is going up against NO who has a banged up secondary so tampa bay will be passing more than running.
craig 11:02 am on 11/20/2009 Permalink
still half asleep, but as for maroney he’s going up against the jets who are 9th against the run this year so expect NE to be passing the ball as usual even in red zone situations. the most points maroney will get you will be around 8 to 11 depending on league and scoring. Remember that’s the most points he’ll get you. so if you want real advice then go to my site at http://www.thefantasyfootballguru.com where there is a link to my e-mail and i’ll answer your questions to the most depth possible with actual reasoning and logic behind it than telling you to start scott against a weak Raiders D that anyone could figure out even my mom who doesn’t watch football would start scott this week. As even if Benson plays he’ll only see about 12 carries other than his usual 28 to 35.

LOL! I love your site Craig! Is there any content under all that crap on the front page? Oh… I guess not, just a bunch of links to NFL.com/Yahoo/ESPN. It looks like a pre-schooler designed your site! Nevermind, even preschoolers know better than to steal content from other people.
BTW, “your” projections (which happen to on the same page as ESPN’s) agree with the advice I gave. Those same projections recommend starting both Cadillac and Maroney over Meachem. Interesting how that works. I guess you must have changed your mind after you made “your” projections.
To be serious though if you are going to link to decent sites at least make sure they are reasonably accurate ones. ESPN is bottom 10% this year in accuracy. Just for everyone’s information, the current most accurate sites on the net in all categories are as follows:

Good riddens! When you come back in a few minutes to respond to this post, it would be better for you if you know that I don’t own this site nor am I one of “the geeks”. I’m simply an active reader willing to help the guys out and provide a different point of view from time to time (though usually we agree).
As for your “threats”, you should educate yourself. As a law student, I’ll try to enlighten you. Slander is the term used for a spoken mistruth/unproven truth that damages someone’s character. The word you were looking for is “libel” which is a written statement doing the same thing. Either way, those suits only work if the information presented is not true which isn’t the case here. Secondly, you would also not be able to file such a suit since no one has damaged you or your character (since you are anonymous on the forum and nobody used your name) and since the site is not responsible for comments made on the forum. As for your site, well it doesn’t come into play at all since you do not own it (you’re officially a renter at your provider) or any of the material on it. You could get ESPN to try and sue somebody for example but you don’t have the option.
As for the e-mails, well quite honestly I’m not sure what you are even talking about! Who are the e-mails from? You may get e-mails when a topic you posted on is replied to but you agreed to have that happen when you agreed to the terms and conditions of the site by signing up then posting. I think you can go into your user settings and change that.
Either way, have a great rest of the year! Don’t feel as if you are unwelcome here! This site exists to provide advice to anyone who needs it. You aren’t excluded!
craig 12:14 pm on 11/20/2009 Permalink
you got me there squish as i am not the sharpest tool in the shed when it comes to law, and yes i did over react about you just stating your opinion. everyone is entitled to their opinion even if the almighty guru lol doesn’t like it. I do have more knowledge of football then i think you’re giving me credit for but that is here nor ther. But, hopefully one day I could even gain you as re-occuring member of my web page but by the looks of it i don’t think that’s going to happen. So good luck with your fantasy football this season and hopefully no hard feelings.
Squish 12:35 pm on 11/20/2009 Permalink
Definitely no hard feelings! And for the record I didn’t say anything about your fantasy football knowledge. I’m sure you know plenty. Everyone’s bound to disagree on at least a few start/sits. Just don’t attack the geeks for something I say. I’m just a lowly reader
As for my mocking your site, I apologize. I may have overreacted a bit. You do have a legitimately complete collection of content even if it isn’t yours. Some of my favorite sites do the same thing (FFNerd, FFLibrarian). The issue was that stolen content has been a hot topic in the community for awhile now. There has been a rash of people literally stealing entire posts from sites like this and posting them to their own site. Granted those sites are getting shutdown left and right but it was wrong to group you with them. You don’t steal literal content. You at least are reasonable enough to link to it. Just understand that content theft is a big deal right now.
It’s all good though. Do you play any other types of FF besides standard? I’ve got and NFL.com TD challenge team, a yahoo pickem (against the spread) team and salary cap team, a couple USAToday contest teams, a bestbuy.com team, and even a FF for charity team. Let me know if you’d like to make/join a group with me in any of those games.
BTW, one of my NE sources seems to believe Randy Moss missed practice Wednesday because he had a family issue believed to be illness or death related
Shirley 6:11 pm on 11/19/2009 Permalink |
Who do you think is likely to have a better fantasy game? Brett Favre (vs. SEA) or Kurt Warner (vs. STL)? I haven’t paid attention to whether Warner throws a lot when he plays an easy team. I know Favre has better games when he goes up against tough teams but not weak teams because MIN just lets AD run the ball.
Amir 6:38 pm on 11/19/2009 Permalink |
Warner should go off start him with confidence.
Squish 10:33 am on 11/20/2009 Permalink
I agree. Warner should go nuts this week. Even if it was close I’d still take Warner since Favre was limited in practice this week. I can assure you the Seahawk defense also heard the news and will likely go the immobile senior all day.
Brandon 5:04 pm on 11/20/2009 Permalink |
Go with Warner of course, he’s one of my “hits” this week! Favre should do alright too though, so either way you shouldn’t worry too much.
Squish 7:38 pm on 11/19/2009 Permalink |
Kinda last second here but would you guys go with Deangelo Williams or Ricky Williams tonight? I currently have Ricky Williams in mostly because Dwil has been limited this week plus Ricky has a great matchup.
Brandon 7:57 pm on 11/19/2009 Permalink |
I think you have to go with Ricky Williams. At least you know he’s healthy and will get the bulk of the carries. DeAngelo will be sharing carries with Jonathan Stewart and if he shows any sign of the injury coming back, I’m sure they’ll be quick to bench him.
Squish 11:16 pm on 11/19/2009 Permalink
Thanks for the quick response! Looks like we made the right decision. With Williams scoring two TDs already, I should really move up in the NFL.com TD challenge. Doesn’t hurt for my Yahoo salary cap team which is super TD heavy
Good call!

Urgent Help! Non- PPR – Choose a RB from: Snelling, Moats, McFadden, or LJ – I know, I know. Lineup sucks, but I’m still in 1st Place.
Shirley 6:50 am on 11/20/2009 Permalink |
I’d say Snelling. Very probable that Turner won’t start and so Snelling has the best chance to start out of all the guys you listed.
Squish 10:11 am on 11/20/2009 Permalink
Yeah, Snelling for sure. Turner is definitely out (I don’t care what he says) and Norwood is doubtful so he’s literally the only RB left. Turner seems to think he can play but nobody has ever played (outside the postseason) the week after a high ankle sprain which is what he has. If he decides to try, he’ll just end up limping off the field after a few carries. Either way, neither Norwood or Turner have practiced this week and that usually means they’ll be inactive. Start Snelling with confidence.
Brandon 5:05 pm on 11/20/2009 Permalink |
I agree with Shirley and Squish…Snelling is your man!
sal 2:12 pm on 11/21/2009 Permalink
change of plans – made a trade for Marion the (non)Barbarian – how do we feel now? snelling or marion anfd the RB by Committee (not to mention- unpredictable Jason Garrett)?
Squish 6:14 pm on 11/21/2009 Permalink
I still think you have to go with Snelling this week. However, if either Turner or Norwood end up playing this week, feel fre to go with Barber. As far as I’m concerned Snelling is only a good play if he starts. If he doesn’t start I like the Barber instead.
Jake 2:46 am on 11/20/2009 Permalink |
I need to start 3 of the 6 (at least 1 RB):
M. Sims-Walker
C. Chambers
M. Wallace
J. Maclin
J. Addai
L. Betts

Damn! At least when I link to ffgeek I at least answer the person’s question first! How rude! Besides everyone knows that the good FF players don’t consider themselves “gurus” so much as obsessed geeks and nerds. Guru is just a self-dedicated title to make a person feel more confident about their lack of skills.
Anyway…
I’d go with Betts, Addai and MSW. Addai may seem to have a bad matchup but Baltimore hasn’t stopped anyone good on the ground for awhile plus he’s great out the backfield and brown is still hurting. MSW is a beast and should do great at Buffalo. The rest of your list is kind of a pick of who’s more consistent. Betts is your best bet there (say that 5 times fast). The WRs are just too inconsistent. Betts will get plenty of carries and be relied on and should be good for 10+ points in standard scoring.
craig 11:20 am on 11/20/2009 Permalink
This is the only time I do agree with squish as if you read one of my earlier posts I don’t usually. but besides the subject you guys who run this site have no heart as your hits and misses are so obvious. grow some balls and tell us the answer to some hard questions. Oh ricky williams was really hard to pick as all of their other backs are injured. By the way Gore, Moss, and Addai will have good games making you guys look like idiots come monday.
Brandon 5:08 pm on 11/20/2009 Permalink
If they’re so obvious, why will those guys have a good day and make us look like idiots? Plus, I think we do plenty of “hard question” answering in our Ask the Geeks segments, not to mention all of the comments on our posts. Thanks for the input though!
Brandon 5:11 pm on 11/20/2009 Permalink |
Although I’m not high on Addai this week, I like him more than Betts. As for the other two, Maclin and Wallace are good high risk/high reward players with solid match-ups, but I’m not sure I can recommend you play both as that may set you up for a low scoring week if both don’t live up to their billing. Go with Jeremy Maclin (especially if your league awards for kick returns) and Mike Sims-Walker and hope he can have a decent game against a tough Bills pass defense.
craig 11:21 am on 11/20/2009 Permalink |
they’re called must starts for a reason!
Squish 11:30 am on 11/20/2009 Permalink |
We’ll see if Moss can beat Revis this week. Revis completely shut him down last time and still hasn’t let a WR he’s covered gain more than 50 yards in any game to date this year. He’s shutdown Moss, AJ, Colston, and other than a short TD catch, MSW.
I got a question for you craig since you are a self-proclaimed fantasy god. Any idea why Moss missed practice Wednesday?

Brandon 5:14 pm on 11/20/2009 Permalink |
Even with a tough match-up, I can’t recommend you bench Frank Gore for the likes of Driver or McCoy. Stick with Gore and hope he proves my “miss” designation wrong.

R. Wayne

R. Rice
B. Scott

Brandon 5:15 pm on 11/20/2009 Permalink |
At wide receiver, go with your top four guys: Wayne, Johnson, Rice and Colston. For your running back, I like all of those guys (except Forte) this week, but I’d go with Ray Rice and take a chance on Bernard Scott, who has a dream match-up with the Raiders. Good luck!

I need some good advice as my opponent this week played Ricky Williams & has a nice head start. PPR league & I need to start 2 of 3:
Thomas Jones vs. NE
LeSean McCoy vs. CHI
Jason Snelling vs. NYG
I’m think of benching Jones, in favor of Snelling. Jones doesn’t catch many passes, whereas Snelling is a gifted receiver. Furthermore, NE’s run defense is tougher than the G-Men. Lastly, I expect the Jets to fall behind early & resort to an aerial attack, thus limiting Jones’ touches.
Please let me know what you think! Thanks
Brandon 5:19 pm on 11/20/2009 Permalink |
T-Jones is playing too good these days to bench. Go with him and hope he picks up a few big runs early in the game (or a short touchdown or two.) For your other RB, go with McCoy, who has a much better match-up and is a bit more of a proven commodity than Snelling.
Scotty 8:57 pm on 11/20/2009 Permalink

I’m looking for a solid WR3:
1) B. Marshall vs. SD
2) S. Breaston @ STL
3) D. Hester vs. PHI
I’m also deciding between these two for a good RB2:
1) F. Gore @ GB
2) K. Smith vs. CLE
Also, between these two defenses:
1) New Orleans @ TB
2) Dallas vs. WAS
Squish 10:50 am on 11/21/2009 Permalink |
Brandon Marshall is a must start in most formats so go with him at WR. Breaston definitely could do very well but Marshall gets too many looks to bench. Hester is worth avoiding with the way Cutler is playing.
You have to go with Gore at RB. Smith may have a great matchup but Gore is a beast and should have a big day regardless of matchup during most weeks.
For the defenses, it’s really up to you but NO is probably the way to go. They force too many turnovers to bench. Dallas will likely allow less points. But the chance that NO’s defense scores a TD is way too high to bench them in my opinion.
Matt 5:02 pm on 11/21/2009 Permalink
Thanks for the advice.
Should I still go with Marshall even if Orton is out?
Squish 6:16 pm on 11/21/2009 Permalink
It’s a tough call but I think you still have to play him. However, I don’t think it would be a mistake to error on the side of safety and just play Hester or Breaston instead if Orton is out. I think if you want to make a safe play that should be good for 9 or so points, you’d be best off playing Hester. But if Orton goes, definitely play Marshall.

im having trouble filling my 2 flex spots for this week any help would be greatly appreciated!
WR/TE and WR/RB are the slots i need to fill and my flex players are:
desean jackson, steve smith (NYG), lesean mccoy, l. coles and jamaal charles
i always have trouble benching desean but he has not done anything in the past 2 weeks warranting a start, steve smith is coming off a bye but the giants are struggling, lesean mccoy is an enigma in andy reid’s tard offense, coles is coles and jamaal charles is facing pittsburgh……………….decisions decisions!
my regular starters are as follows
carson palmer over romo at QB
andre johnson and vincent jackson at WR
maurice jones-drew and ray rice at RB
heath miller at TE
cincinatti over new orleans at DEF
Squish 10:58 am on 11/21/2009 Permalink |
Well your lineup as is looks good don’t change anything on the current lineup.
For your flex slots, you have to start Djax. I don’t know what you are complaining about! He had 8 receptions for 91 yards last week! He may not have gotten in the endzone in awhile but you have to know it’s coming with the number of targets he gets. Steve Smith other than a TD last week has actually done less over the past 4 games than DJax.
For your WR/RB flex, I think McCoy is your best play since Westbrook is out. Smith could be played here too but stay away from Charles this week.
Matt 12:39 pm on 11/21/2009 Permalink |
DeSean Jackson’s a WR1 every week regardless of matchup. He’s the best receiver on a team that passes more than any other squad in the league, and talent-wise is showing that he belongs in the conversation with the best in the business.

I’d go with Devin Hester at wide receiver and Bernard Scott as your running back.

Brandon,
you have mendenhall on your hit list. Would you start him over s Jackson?

I can’t speak for Brandon but I personally like Mendenhall over Jackson this week. He has a monster matchup against a team giving up almost 15 points on average to opposing RBs. Pittsburgh should be way ahead all day and he’ll get fed a large meal of carries.
Steven Jackson mostly is projected to have a good week simply because of who he is. He has a horrible matchup at Arizona and judging from the last couple weeks, I think STL is learning they might need to lean on the pass to get anywhere. They should be down early and go away from the run.
I feel like Mendenthal is a lock for a big game whereas Jackson has only a decent chance. If I had Mendenthal in any league I’d probably start him over Ray Rice, Frank Gore, and Steven Jackson. This is his week, I’d start him for sure!

I agree with Squish here, go with Mendenhall. However, who are you starting that requires you to bench one of them in the first place?

PPR League, should I start Steve Breaston or Derrick Mason. Mason has been pretty consistent and is the clear #1 WR on Baltimore, but Breaston has been hot recently, and I also get points for punt/kickoff returns.

And a follow up! Greg Olsen or Tony Gonzalez?

It’s close, but I like Derrick Mason just because he’s the primary target in the Ravens passing game. At tight end, Greg Olsen is your man this week.

Beanie Wells or Laurence Maroney?
Thanks

Wells has a much better match-up…go with him.

Been playing Todd Heap as my TE this season. Has proven pretty useless- other waiver options are
Scheffler
Finley
Davis
Pettigrew
Lewis

Scheffler could be a sneaky play this week, considering he had a huge game the last time the Broncos played the Chargers. However, his quarterback position has some issues.

I guess Pettigrew was the guy to play here…who would have known?!

Marshawn or F. Jackson?
Brandon 11:41 am on 11/22/2009 Permalink |
Pretty much a coin flip here, but I’d go with Lynch and hope he gets some goal line carries.

Lee Evans or Hester?

Hester
