As I mentioned in an earlier post, make sure to check your rosters before the game tonight so that you don’t get screwed with a starter on your bench (or even worse if there are leagues out there that lock rosters after the first game of the week starts!) Anyways, I wanted to get this post out with time to spare before game-time tonight in case any of the 49ers or Bears players made the list. Here are our “Hits” and “Misses” for week ten, listing players you want to make sure are in your lineup, as well as those you might consider shelving for the week (or at least lowering your expectations!)
Quarterback

Misses
|
| Drew Brees, Saints @ STL – I’ve mentioned before that I don’t usually include match-ups on here that are too obvious, but I took the lazy route this week and wanted to highlight Brees’ dream game against the Rams. A few weeks ago Peyton Manning went to St. Louis and threw for 235 yards and three touchdowns…expect similar numbers from Drew Brees this weekend. |
Donovan McNabb, Eagles @ SD – McNabb has been very hit or miss this year and it’s usually dependent on whether he can get DeSean Jackson or Jeremy Maclin to catch one of his long bombs. The Chargers have been solid against the pass though and if they can protect against the deep ball, McNabb will have a long day. |
| Brett Favre, Vikings vs DET – The first time the Vikings played the Lions, Favre had a mediocre game, throwing for just 169 yards and two touchdowns. I expect a pretty big improvement over those numbers this weekend, with the game in Minnesota and Favre coming off a four touchdown domination of the Packers. |
Kyle Orton, Broncos @ WAS – Since the BYE week, Orton has played terrible (or should I say, very Orton-like) football. He just threw three interceptions to the Steelers on Monday Night Football and while the Redskins are not the Steelers, the outcome might be pretty similar. |
| Mark Sanchez, Jets vs JAX – Last week the Jaguars gave up 262 yards and two touchdowns to Matt Cassel, in Jacksonville. Similar numbers are likely from New York’s Golden Boy. |
David Garrard, Jaguars @ NYJ – The Jets held Drew Brees, Tom Brady and Matt Schaub to a combined ZERO touchdowns this season. Enough said. |
Running Back
Hits
|
Misses
|
| Chris Johnson, Titans vs BUF – As with Drew Brees (above), Johnson’s match-up with the Bills this weekend was almost too easy to even list here, but it was so favorable I just couldn’t resist. The Bills have given up 12 touchdowns on the ground to opposing running backs this season and over the past six games are allowing over 190 yards per game on average! |
Cedric Benson, Bengals @ PIT – Benson continues to prove anyone who knew anything about football coming into this season wrong, as he’s racking up some serious yardage and is already approaching the 1,000 yard mark. However, having to play against the Steelers IN Pittsburgh, I find it hard to believe he’ll break one thousand yards this weekend. |
| Ray Rice, Ravens @ CLE – As with the Bills, the Browns have also given up 12 touchdowns to opposing RB’s this season. Ray Rice has been solid in both the run and pass game all year and this game will not be any different. |
Knowshon Moreno, Broncos @ WAS – I’m not sure what happened last week, when Moreno racked up a whopping three yards on five carries, but you can safely say that he’ll do better than that this weekend…the question though is how much better? Probably not enough for you to want him in your line-up. |
| Pierre Thomas, Saints @ STL – Minus a little hiccup last week (against the Lions), the Rams were successfully allowing opposing running backs to have free reign over their endzone. Adrian Peterson, Maurice Jones-Drew and Joseph Addai racked up eight rushing touchdowns against St. Louis from weeks five to seven and I see the PT Cruiser doing the same this week. |
Joseph Addai, Colts vs NE – The Patriots run defense is even better than the numbers show, as a flukey 195 yard performance by the Titans (in a game that they got smoked 59-0!) is raising the average quite a bit. They’ve allowed two rushing scores all year to running backs and that has been against some pretty good players (Thomas Jones, Michael Turner, Ray Rice, Ronnie Brown, etc.) |
Wide Receiver
Hits
|
Misses
|
| Sidney Rice, Vikings vs DET – The Lions continue to be one of the worst teams in the league at stopping wide receivers and this week Brett Favre and the Vikings come to town. Detroit is giving up around a touchdown per game to opposing wide receivers and this week it should be Sidney Rice that comes up with the score. |
Roddy White, Falcons @ CAR – While Drew Brees was able to inflict some damage on the Panthers secondary last week, Carolina has otherwise been pretty good against the wide receiver position (and gets to play at home this week.) The last time these teams played, Roddy White had just 53 yards (although he did have a touchdown.) |
| Derrick Mason, Ravens @ CLE – The Browns were torched by Joe Flacco and the Ravens receivers in week three, allowing 219 yards and a score to Derrick Mason and crew. Expect a similar outcome this weekend. |
Brandon Marshall, Broncos @ WAS – Marshall had a huge day last weekend, catching 11 passes for over 100 yards. This Sunday though he faces a Redskins defense that is the only thing Washington has going for itself at the moment. |
| Devin Hester, Bears @ SF – The 49ers have been Jekyll/Hyde this year when it comes to stopping the other teams wide receivers. According to schedule, this is an “off” game…not to mention Hester has been on fire as of late, catching 27 passes for 359 yards and a touchdown over the past four games. |
Santana Moss, Redskins vs DEN – While the Redskins have been tough against wide receivers, their opponents this weekend have been nearly as good. Moss really only has two good games all season anyways, so this shouldn’t be that heartbreaking of a decision to make. |
Tight End
Hits
|
Misses
|
| Antonio Gates, Chargers vs PHI – Maybe it’s a credit to their secondary, as they’re able to slow down opposing wide receivers, but the Eagles are giving up a lot of receptions, yards and touchdowns to the tight end position so far this year. Forget about the drops he had last week, as Gates is usually one of the more sure-handed tight ends out there. He’ll get a lot of looks from Philip Rivers this weekend and should put up solid numbers. |
Dustin Keller, Jets vs JAX – With the Jaguars, it seems to be the opposite situation of the Eagles. Their secondary has a lot of trouble slowing down opposing wide receivers and therefor the tight end isn’t used as much. Either way though, tight ends haven’t had a lot of success against Jacksonville this season and I don’t see Keller as being the one to change that trend. |

One note of caution on Favre – the groin injury I discuss here.
Brandon 4:25 pm on 11/12/2009 Permalink |
All reports I’ve seen say he should be fine, but it’s always a good idea to watch these situations all the way until game day.
Amir 4:30 pm on 11/12/2009 Permalink
hes good to play — active game streak — unless his arm or leg actually fell off hell play — come on boys your better than that!
Matt 4:39 pm on 11/12/2009 Permalink
My fear isn’t that he won’t play, it’s that he’ll do exactly what he did last year – play through an injury that slowly ruins his performance.
Colin 8:48 pm on 11/12/2009 Permalink |
So I have both Brett Favre and Tom Brady on my FF team. Farve looks like the better match-up this week but Im worried that the Vikings will stomp all over the Lions early thus taking Farve out of the game early. Brady will be playing all game but a very tough game…. What should I do?!
Squish 9:16 pm on 11/12/2009 Permalink
Go with Brady. Why waste one of your studs? Favre may have performed well so far but there is no way he can be deemed on the level of Brady. You know Brady will toss a few tDs no matter who he’s playing so play him for sure.
Anthony 5:47 pm on 11/12/2009 Permalink |
Which 2 WRs should I start, Mike Sims Walker, Devin Hester, Santana Moss, or Robert Meachem?
Brandon 5:50 pm on 11/12/2009 Permalink |
Although Sims-Walker has a tough match-up, go with him and Devin Hester. Moss made my “Miss” list this week and Meachem is too risky.
Squish 8:04 pm on 11/12/2009 Permalink
Agreed. If Hester can still play the way he did last week injured then he’s a legitimate fantasy WR now. I learned the consequences of benching MSW last week. Don’t make yourself go through that Anthony.
Jonathan 8:27 pm on 11/12/2009 Permalink |
In a debacle this week. Should I start: Which one?
Austin Collie-Colts WR vs. New England
Devery Henderson-Saints WR vs. Rams
Brandon 10:03 am on 11/13/2009 Permalink |
Go with Henderson for sure. Better match-up and he’s been solid the past few games.
Scotty 5:11 pm on 11/13/2009 Permalink |
Hey Brandon, I’m in a PPR leauge & I’m wondering who I should start: Kevin Smith vs. Minn or Lesean McCoy vs. SD? Minn def is stout & will be rested coming off a bye; however, Smith will undoubtedly get the lion’s share of touches (& he performed ok against Minn earlier this season). Whereas McCoy has an easier matchup, he will be sharing time with Westbrook, according to Andy Reid. What do you think?
Brandon 5:31 pm on 11/13/2009 Permalink |
Even with Kevin Smith getting “the lion’s share” (pun intended), I still like LeSean McCoy against a suspect Chargers run defense. There’s still a chance Brian Westbrook doesn’t play, so McCoy would be a definite start in that case.
Jojo 6:38 pm on 11/13/2009 Permalink |
OK. I have Cutler and only him…moment of silence please. On the waiver my choices are limited moving forward. Sanchez, Freeman, T. Edwards, and J. Campbell. Which one is the best pick moving forward for possible matchup play??
Brandon 10:13 pm on 11/13/2009 Permalink |
Let’s not go too crazy on thinking Jay Cutler is a lost cause…just two games ago he threw for 369 yards and three touchdowns against the Cardinals (although a lot was in garbage time I guess.) Either way, none of those QB’s you’ve listed strike my fancy, but if I had to pick any of them right now I’d say Mark Sanchez. Josh Freeman is a wildcard though. Watch him over the next game or so and see what kind of numbers he puts up.
Ken 1:25 am on 11/14/2009 Permalink |
Normally a no brainer but seeing the numbers guys like Randy moss and Andre Johnson put up against the jets I’m worried about starting simswalker.
You like msw or breaston better this week? I’m leaning tiwards breaston but a second opinion always helps.
Thanks!
Squish 7:08 am on 11/14/2009 Permalink |
I can answer the question for everyone on this board I think. Brandon and Mike will definitely say go with MSW despite his poor matchup. I am more or less in agreement with them. But, I will go out on a limb and say that if Boldin is out this week, Breaston should be the better play this week for sure.
Ken 9:23 am on 11/14/2009 Permalink |
Thanks squish. Yea, I mean the cardinals usually score well against seatle and breaston pulled in 17 points in my ppr league last time. But i got this nagging feeling that’s not going to happen again. I think seatle’s def is gonna step up a bit this week.
But man, the only time I saw Revis eff up was his booboo against ted ginn in miami’s Jet’s first match. Otherwise he’s shut down every receiver, and I doubt MSW is gonna be amy dif. So its a tough call.
Brandon 1:29 pm on 11/14/2009 Permalink |
Hah, Squish called me out I guess…and he’s right. Although Sims-Walker’s good games this season have all come at the expense of less-than-spectacular defenses, I can’t recommend you bench him for the likes of Steve Breaston. I’m not necessarily a “never bench your start player” kind of guy, but in this case, I wouldn’t bench your star guy.
Jojo 2:52 pm on 11/14/2009 Permalink |
If D. Williams is out this weekend, who is the better play J. Stewart or Mendenhall?
Squish 12:05 am on 11/15/2009 Permalink |
If Williams is out I think Mendenthal is the better option. Carolina is facing a reasonable defense and Stewart really hasn’t looked good all season plus he’s been on the injury list for a majority of it. Mendenthal is clearly now the primary carrier in PIT and they’ll use him plenty against a Cincinatti team who’s DL is still hurting from the loss of Odom. Look for Pittsburgh’s OL to establish themselves early and often. Even if Mendenthal doesn’t get a big load of carries, he’ll do plenty with what he does get. I think you can count on at least a couple long runs by him and like a TD or two.
Brandon 11:26 am on 11/15/2009 Permalink |
I have to disagree with Squish here. If DeAngelo Williams is out, Stewart makes a great play against the Falcons. Minus his last game (against a tough Saints defense), he was running the ball pretty well and the last time he played the Falcons, he had a 7.2 ypc average on nine carries. I’d go with Stewart (IF DeAngelo Williams is out that is
)

Hey Brandon,
I’ve been waffling back and forth (just call me Favre) about which QB to start. I’ve got Flacco with a great matchup or the always consistent Rivers with a not so great matchup against Philly. What do you think?
Squish 1:46 am on 11/15/2009 Permalink |
I like Rivers this week better than Flacco despite the matchup differences. All my most accurate sources have Rivers slightly ahead as well. The going consensus is that Baltimore won’t have to pass much against the Browns and because of that the great passing game matchup is more or less superficial. Rivers on the other hand will likely have to pass often in the competitive game he’s playing in and thus should accrue more fantasy points.
Brandon 11:28 am on 11/15/2009 Permalink |
I agree with Squish on this one. There are very few match-ups now where you would start Flacco over Rivers. Rivers’ upside is just too high with the weapons he has at his disposal.
Brian 12:57 pm on 11/15/2009 Permalink
Thank you both of you. Well articulated and sound reasoning. Looks like i’m going with Rivers!
