Five Potential Shockers for Week 8
If you haven't seen my previous "shocker" posts, my definition of a fantasy shocker is a player who comes out of relatively nowhere, has a gigantic, multi-touchdown game, becomes the hottest waiver commodity the following week, and then soon sinks back into the relative obscurity from whence he came. You might even call them "ultra-sleepers," but you'd be wrong. They're called "shockers." Can't you read?
Before I get into this week's shockers, let's take a look at how I did last week and see if I bagged any big 'uns. Remember, these are pie-in-the-sky, what-if scenarios, not really predictions per se:
Well, you know what they say - if at first you don't succeed, kill yourself in a grotesque manner try, try again.
Joe Jurevicius, WR, CLE: JJ's last big game came against a defense (Bungles) that's every bit as bad as the one he's facing this week (Rams). If he's got another 2-TD performance left in him, this is probably the week it'll happen.
Drew Bennett, WR, STL: I'm betting that St. Louis will fall behind early, given their terrible defense and the pretty-potent Cleveland passing game. Having Steven Jackson back will take some of the pressure off Bulger, and if they do fall behind, he'll be passing the ball quite a bit. Bennett's hammy is OK, and he could re-establish himself as a dangerous NFL receiver if Bulger resembles anything close to his usual self.
Cedric Benson, RB, CHI: Every NFL expert's favorite whipping boy has to have one big game this season, doesn't he? At home against the Lions, who gave up 191 total yards to Earnest Graham last week, Benson's got the best shot at doing so that he'll probably have all season. And speaking of the Bears...
Devin Hester, WR, CHI: If the Bears were ever going to try to get Hester more involved in the offense, they'd do it this week, at home against a divisional opponent with a weak defense. Just imagine what Soldier Field will be like if Hester turns a 10-yard reception into a 70-yard touchdown.
Josh Reed, WR, BUF: Lee Evans has been effectively shut down by opposing defenses thus far in the season, and maybe the Jets' god-awful secondary will be able to continue that trend. But I expect Trent Edwards, who played great in his NFL debut against the Jets in week 3, to have a good game either way, and Josh Reed will produce if the Jets focus on Evans.
