Obligatory explanatory introduction for the uninitiated: If you haven’t seen my previous “shocker” posts, my definition of a fantasy shocker is a player who comes out of relatively nowhere, has a gigantic, multi-touchdown game, becomes the hottest waiver commodity the following week, and then soon sinks back into the relative obscurity from whence he came.

With that out of the way, let’s see if I had any success with last week’s picks…

Last Week’s Shocker Picks

Chris Henry, RB, TEN: I said, “Look for White to come back to Earth this week, and for Henry to get 8-10 carries against Carolina, turn them into 60-70 yards and a TD (or two?) and become one of the top waiver-wire commodities going into week 10." The coaches fed it consistently to LenDale White, so Henry didn’t get a chance to make anything happen.

Brandon Jones, WR, TEN: I said, “Why couldn’t the best receiver on the Titans have a big game against a team that gives up an average of 232 yards through the air? Guess I had a little too much faith in Vince Young, who only threw for 110 yards on the day (less than half of the average yardage allowed to QBs by Carolina all season).

D.J. Hackett, WR, SEA: I said, “If there was ever a player who could have a monster game out of nowhere, it’s Hackett in week 9. Hackett had a nice game (6 rec, 58 yards, 1 TD), but not a monster. I still like him a lot when Branch is hurt.

Vincent Jackson, WR, SD: I said, “Jackson’s still as talented as he ever was, and Minnesota’s NFL-worst passing defense will forget about him at their peril. Philip Rivers’ inexplicably horrible day against Minnesota ruined Jackson’s chances of putting up any numbers.

Joe Jurevicius, WR, CLE: I said, “You know what? I liked him last week, and I like him even more this week against the 29th-ranked Seattle pass defense.” 4 catches, 69 yards, but no end zone.

Here are my shocker picks for week 10.

Amani Toomer, WR, NYG: This game has shootout written all over it. All of the other options are probably on starting lineups in your league, but Toomer may be the forgotten man. He’s a great speculative plug-in this week.

Isaac Bruce, WR, STL: This team desperately needed the bye week to nurse their wounds. Their pathetic, girly-man, 0-8 wounds. What they needed after the bye week is exactly what they got: A game against a team they match up well with. St. Louis can’t run the ball, but that’s OK, they don’t need to against the Saints’ gawdawful secondary. Bruce will have all the work his petrified bones can handle.

Priest Holmes, RB, KC: Everyone’s eyes are on the Priest, but it gets a lot more interesting when you consider that the rushing defense he’s taking on this season is ranked dead last in the NFL. What if he has a 4-touchdown day, just like old times? Will you shed a tear?

Devery Henderson, WR, NO: Henderson hasn’t gotten his piece of the Saints’ resurgence yet this season, but expect that to change in this shootout.

Vinny Testaverde, QB, CAR: The Panthers need this game to stay in contention with the Saints in the NFC South, and it’d be just like Vinny to rise to the occasion.
