It always amazes me how quickly the fantasy football season flies by. Given that most leagues’ playoffs start in week 14, next week’s games will mark the midway point of the regular season.
If your fantasy team is at the bottom of the standings right now, you no longer have the luxury of waiting for high-ceiling players to pan out. Painful as it may be, it’s time to plug the holes in your lineup by trading your prized prospects for players you can start right away. From this point forward, treat every week like it’s your last – because realistically, if you lose, it probably is.
Here are a few examples of high-potential players you might be hoarding on your bench, along with some potential trades you could offer for less-exciting players who could help you right away.
| If you’ve got… | Try trading him for… |
| Beanie Wells | Ricky Williams or Tim Hightower |
| Sammy Morris | Jerome Harrison or Mike Bell |
| Anquan Boldin (assuming he’s going to miss a week or two) | Vincent Jackson or Hines Ward |
| Anthony Gonzalez | Torry Holt or Donald Driver |
| Michael Crabtree | Whatever you can get |

Oh I was 0-3 and clawed back to 2-3 thanks mainly to Brandon and I went down narrowly to go 2-4, I am devo’d! Megatron injury owned me! Jacobs continually hurts! I ended up going with Northcutt as my fill in WR which wasn’t bad but Breaston (who Brandon recommended) would have just about won me the game. As an Aussie Sunday 1o clock games are 3am and he was questionable so I needed a sure thing, I should have just stayed awake picked up Breaston and if he was injured quickly dropped him for Northcut! Nooooo!
This week, my waiver D? Pats, Bears, Panthers, Cowboys?
SO DESTROYED! Have to turn it around! Cheers guys

pats v tb in London
Josh from RI 2:40 pm on 10/21/2009 Permalink
As much as I love the Pats D/ST against TB, I totally agree with Matt on the Panthers. If you’re 2-4, make a splash and take a chance on a big return with little investment. They’re disposable after this week, so keep picking up a D/ST with the best matchup week-to-week. Save your top waiver wire claims for your most needy positions.
Matt 9:08 am on 10/21/2009 Permalink |
I hate to say it, but the Panthers could be in for a big week at home against the Bills, who will be starting either a concussed Trent Edwards or an unknown commodity in Ryan Fitzpatrick. Considering that the Panthers are second only to the Giants in stopping the pass and the Buffalo o-line is as green as they come, this seems like a situation ripe for QB turnovers and sacks.
Brandon 10:26 am on 10/21/2009 Permalink |
Go with either the Patriots or Panthers…both should do well.
Mal 8:39 pm on 10/20/2009 Permalink |
Also my 3 top WR are on bye this week (would you believe it!)
fill ins so far are
Roy Williams
Pierre Garcon
need to pick 1 (possibly 2 if you think the above aren’t gonna cut it) more up off the waivers, who do you suggest, names available are..
Mike Wallace
Earl Bennet
Ted Ginn
Massaquoi
Caldwell
Brandon 10:29 am on 10/21/2009 Permalink |
I like Massaquoi and Wallace, although I’m not sure I’d start either over Garcon this week against the Rams. Go for Massaquoi and hope Derek Anderson doesn’t have another 2 completion day!
Mal 8:32 pm on 10/21/2009 Permalink
Waivers went out before this I missed Wallace and Got Earl Bennet but Massaquoi still available, god Anderson better not dud it up again. I might be able to sneak a trade with house mate who has benched
Donnie Avery
Michael Crabtree
this week. Either a better option?
sal 10:50 pm on 10/20/2009 Permalink |
miles austin or chaz schilens available?
Mal 12:01 am on 10/21/2009 Permalink |
chaz is but with a don’t buy fantasy analysis?
Brad 11:52 pm on 10/20/2009 Permalink |
Another 2-4 team like me wants to trade a WR for an RB. In 9-deep bench/12-team league, I have DeAngelo Williams, Moreno, R Rice, J Stewart and K Smith at RB (my best WRs are Driver, Bowe and S Smith-Car); he has Ocho, Andre Johnson, Jennings, A Gates (only good RB Barber). Who can I get for Williams? Who can I get for Rice? We have a flex WR/RB slot so he’s okay with just Barber.
You guys rock! Thanks.
Matt 9:13 am on 10/21/2009 Permalink |
I wouldn’t trade DeAngelo Williams straight up for any of those WRs, even though I’m a big Andre Johnson fan; there would need to be some sort of package deal involved. As for Rice, you should be able to get Ochocinco or Jennings for him (I’d prefer Ocho).
Squish 6:59 pm on 10/21/2009 Permalink
Yeah, Jennings or the Ocho for rice is reasonable. Try trading Kevin Smith for one of the two and you’ll get a major upgrade to your team.
Ken 12:33 am on 10/21/2009 Permalink |
I’m 5 – 1 and 1 – 5 in my fantasy teams heh. For my crap team, would you suggest going for a big trade to try and salvage, or you think I can get by on my WR’s.
QB
Warner
Cutler
WR
Fitzgerald
Jennings
Sims-Walker
Breaston
Hester
Knox
Hakeem Nicks
RB
Leon Washington
Mike Bell
Sammy Morris (waiting for the word on wednesday to drop him)
Jamal Lewis
TE
Finley
K
Keading
DEf
NYJ
Im hoping Ive beefed up my Receiver set enough to stay competitive and start winning, but you think I should try and pitch a big guy like fitzgerald for a number 1 RB if possible? Or perhaps a sims-walker for a number 2 back?
Thanks!
Brandon 10:35 am on 10/21/2009 Permalink |
I would definitely try to upgrade at the running back position, as you’re in dire need of some help there, while you’re stacked at WR. Hakeem Nicks should be solid for the rest of the year. You might package Sims-Walker and Hester or something for a good running back.
Amir 4:30 pm on 10/21/2009 Permalink
I’m actually more of a fan of trading a Fitzgerald. He’s the biggest WR name you have out there and in many fantasy leagues the fact that hes Larry Fitzgerald and was drafted so early will get you the most value in terms of a trade
Haha just my train of thought
Ken 4:35 pm on 10/21/2009 Permalink
yea thats exactly what I was thinking. Either trade Fitzgerald 1 to 1 for a solid #1 back, or sims and hester or sims and knox for a decent back. Thanks guys
Ken 5:03 pm on 10/21/2009 Permalink
fitzgerald and hester for MJD sound good?
Amir 11:24 pm on 10/21/2009 Permalink
i would go for it
Ken 12:35 am on 10/21/2009 Permalink |
just to clarify, my league is a ppr and has 1 qb, 3 wr, 2 rb and 1 flex spot, plus k, te, def.
Mal 12:40 am on 10/21/2009 Permalink |
i’d rank those WR
Andre
Ocho
Gates
Jennings
However the first 3 are relatively effective where as Jennings is kind of stinking it up, so he should have the least trade value. Obviously you should try get what you can for williams in that order but with jennings being the most realistic. You probably already knew that though
Tom 1:19 am on 10/21/2009 Permalink |
Need a good WR, I’ve got C Johnson, Hester, Maclin, Gonzales, Cotchery, and Kenny Britt. Available are: Mike Wallce, Torry Holt, Steve Breaston, Mark Clayton, Jacoby Jones, and George Wilson..(of the upper stats anyway). What do you guys think? I’m 2-4 now and playing in a pretty evenly matched league. Around a 100 overall points difference between best and worst teams. I have Roethlisberger, Turner, Portis (regrettably), Hester, Maclin, T Gonzales, Packers, and Gostkowski as my starters… thanks in advance for any input..
Matt 9:25 am on 10/21/2009 Permalink |
Is Breaston still available?! Grab him, stat!
TeamWorseThanARectalDysfunction 2:52 am on 10/21/2009 Permalink |
which of these guys SHOULDN’T be dropped for a flier on Darren McFadden: choice, mccoy, bell, keller (TE2), DWard, LJ, Garcon?
peyton manning is to the colts as ffgeekblog is to my fantasy team.
Brandon 10:32 am on 10/21/2009 Permalink |
Honestly, I wouldn’t drop any of those guys except maybe Derrick Ward and Dustin Keller. However, why do you want a hurt running back that plays for the Raiders?
Ali 11:56 am on 10/21/2009 Permalink |
I am hurting on bye’s this week…. Mccoy has been sitting my bench the season. However, I have to play him this week b/c bye’s. Should I suck it up and play him or try and pick up: F. Jackson, M. Bell, J. Harrison, J. Fargas. K. Faulk and hope for more points?
Matt 4:37 pm on 10/21/2009 Permalink |
McCoy’s not a good pick this week and if you can plug someone else in, you should. Most of the guys you named have a better shot of doing something in their games. Jackson could be a sleeper – I like both Buffalo backs this week as the Bills will probably try and run the ball as much as they can, given Carolina’s excellent pass defense and their shaky QB situation. He’s the best bet of the guys you named.
John 12:04 pm on 10/21/2009 Permalink |
What is the outlook of Greg Jennings? especially with the influence of Donald Driver.
I have MJD and MSW, and since I don’t want a RB and WR from same team, I’m thinking about trading MSW for Jennings? Is that a good trade based on Jennings’s future production?
Matt 4:44 pm on 10/21/2009 Permalink |
MSW… MSW… took me forever to figure out that you meant Mike Sims-Walker. Shouldn’t a guy have to be on the scene longer than a few nanoseconds before he gets his own acronym?
Tough call on that trade – I’d probably hold on to the guy you’ve got; Jennings is a question mark right now and Sims-Walker is suddenly the focal point of his team’s offense. Why don’t you want a RB and WR on the same team? There’s nothing wrong with that, generally speaking.
Squish 12:01 pm on 10/22/2009 Permalink |
I’d stand pat. You may be able to get Jennings for cheaper within the next few weeks and there is definitely nothing wrong with owning players from the same team. In fact, it generally makes the team as a whole more consistent which is a good thing.
sal 12:18 pm on 10/21/2009 Permalink |
hey guys – steered me wrong last week
but I will forgive and give you another shot (I’m still in 2nd place) — need help once again this week: standard non-ppr league chris johnson is on a bye – so I’m left with ronnie brown, benson, and felix jones – and WR’s are moss and colston (def starting them) and backups are walter and massaquoi..who should get that flex spot (jones, massa, or walter)?
Matt 4:49 pm on 10/21/2009 Permalink |
Depends on Jones’ knee. If he looks OK by Friday, he’s the best option of those three.
Squish 12:02 pm on 10/22/2009 Permalink
I’d say Massaquoi is the safe play.
sal 12:19 pm on 10/21/2009 Permalink |
on my other team I’m struggling with who I should make my WR’s – miles austin, roddy white, greg jennings, or vincent jackson?? drop one…
sal 12:37 pm on 10/21/2009 Permalink |
also, jennings and parker are garbage and i have roddy white vincent jackson and now miles austin & deangelo williams, larry johnson, and tashard choice… should I hang on to greg and the player formerly known as fast willie or try to trade for someone or something..
Squish 12:03 pm on 10/22/2009 Permalink |
Get rid of Parker, he’s not even the starter in Pittsburgh anymore. Hang onto Jennings and drop Parker.
Glory Hog 12:51 pm on 10/21/2009 Permalink |
Should I trade (in a non-ppr league):
Randy Moss/Michael Bush for Rashard Mendenhall/Derrick Mason?
My other receivers are (no TEs): Brent Celek, Andre Johnson, Percy Harvin
My other running backs are: Gore, Coffee, Jerome Harrison, Mike Bell, Mewelde Moore
Amir 11:26 pm on 10/21/2009 Permalink |
I wouldnt do this trade — Brady and Moss seem to have found rhythm and if that continues Moss will be a top tier WR — I like mendenhall too but giving up Moss for him is just too much
Dan 1:32 pm on 10/21/2009 Permalink |
Given the match up that NE has i would not trade RM. And what do you all think? Breaston over Nicks for week 7? I don’t like the matchup that Breaston has. Going against NYG that is ranked number 1 in YPG or Nicks that is going against Arizon that is ranked 31 in passsing. i dont like that Nicks is in a time share with Manningham tho. What do you think?
Glory Hog 2:38 pm on 10/21/2009 Permalink |
Manningham is hurting a bit, so Nicks is a good start against AZ in my opinion.
If i’m going to trade Moss for a RB I have to do it this week because the guy offering Mendenhall is screwed with byes and is desperate. I agree Moss will be huge this week, but is it worth getting Mendenhall as my RB2 with Gore since I my WR should be good with A. Johnson, Celek, Mason?
Shane 5:22 pm on 10/21/2009 Permalink |
Hey guys,
I have a close matchup this week and my receivers are either going to make or break this matchup
I have Driver, Smith (Car), Crabtree, Moore
Which two make the most sense to start?
Is Crabtree in for a breakout first game?

Sadly I’m 1-5 in my fantasy football league and I do not know what to do.. lol
My team is:
QB:
Aaron Rodgers
Big Ben Roethlisberger
David Garrard
RB:
Matt Forte
Donald Brown
Kevin Smith
Glen Coffee (who i’m dropping for waiver, Steve Breaston)
WR:
Dwayne Bowe
Mario Manningham
Mohamed Massaquoi
Jeremey Maclin
Steve Breaston (#1 waiver)
TE:
Chris Cooley
K:
Stephen Gostkowski
DEF/ST:
Packers
Steelers
Help please! Thanks
Matt 8:29 am on 10/22/2009 Permalink |
I think there’s hope for this team. You might test the waters with Forte and see if you can package him into a deal for a RB who has been a more consistent performer – there may be an owner in your league willing to take a risk on him.
pete 12:21 am on 10/25/2009 Permalink
trade one of your QBs for good rb you don’t need three qbs
apk 10:10 pm on 10/21/2009 Permalink |
Is it too early to trade away matt forte?
Amir 11:27 pm on 10/21/2009 Permalink |
depends on what you get for him — his value is pretty low now to be honest — what are you thinking of getting for him?
Matt 8:31 am on 10/22/2009 Permalink |
Also depends how much risk you’re willing to take. See my response to CT above – Forte is a high-risk, high-potential player right now, with the risk being that the Bears might not figure out a way to run the ball effectively all season.
ffgeekblogROCKS 3:06 am on 10/22/2009 Permalink |
hey guys! should i trade my calvin and christopher johnson for wesley welker and raymell rice? am i getting ripped off? should i go for his sidney rice as well and throw in avery or royal? ahhhh, help!
Matt 8:35 am on 10/22/2009 Permalink |
I’d make that trade. Ray Rice is quickly turning into a stud, and Welker’s going to be a monster now that Brady’s throwing the ball well again.

Also, how is Deangelo Williams looking? Could I trade MSW for him?
