Before we get started with the questions, I just wanted to remind everyone that we’re running a contest for a $50 NFL.com gift card, which you can win by simply picking the quarterback who will score the most fantasy points this week. Make sure to head over and make your pick before the games start this weekend!
Anyways, here is our first round of Ask the Geek questions for week nine. Remember, you can ask the geeks here or simply leave your questions as comments on our posts and we’ll try our best to respond to them as soon as possible. Our first question focuses on a common topic of this week…what is the deal with Steve Slaton?
Will asks…
Like many I was victimized by the Steve Slaton benching (Thanks Gary Kubiak!). Should I stick with Slaton this week against the Colts or should I try Julius Jones against the Lions?
Brandon’s take: You might wait till closer to game time to see if the Texans shed any more light on the running back situation for Sunday, but I’m still leaning towards Slaton. Julius Jones just hasn’t done much of anything lately and Slaton has much more upside than him…as long as he can hold on to the ball. Stick with Slaton.
Adam asks…
Hey guys – I have a real good feeling about Jamaal Charles and his matchup this week, but I’d need to sit either Kevin Smith or Hightower. Who should I sit? Am I being dumb to sit either? Thanks!
Brandon’s take: I’d go with Tim Hightower. While he doesn’t rack up the rushing yards, he somehow finds a way to score a touchdown almost every week and catches a lot of passes out of the backfield. Charles may have a good match-up, but he still plays for the Chiefs, who do not have a rushing touchdown all year.
Grizz asks…
My RBs:
Pierre Thomas
Cedric Benson
Ronnie BrownWho’s the odd man out?
Brandon’s take: Tough one there, but I think I would bench Ronnie Brown. The PT Cruiser has a great match-up this week against the Panthers and Cedric Benson has been on fire all year long. As a Patriots fan, I’m hoping that they’ve learned to contain the Wildcat and can limit the damage Brown and Ricky Williams do this weekend.
Rob asks…
i am going to see if you can help me here. i am (in) a point per reception league and we use five offensive players. out of those five at least one must be a running back. so, are you ready for my choices? they are chris johnson, knowshon moreno, beanie wells, devin hester, chad ocho, de jackson, mike sims-walker. also, do i play hasselback or cutler? they both have good matchups. thanks rob
Brandon’s take: Start Chris Johnson as your running back, then Hester, Ochocinco, Jackson and Sims-Walker as the other four guys. At quarterback, I like Matt Hasselbeck, who made my “hit” list this week.
Joe asks…
Im in a 12-person league and have been holding onto a few players for quite some time for their “potential” worth. This is my first year doing fantasy football and I’m not too sure how this plays out during the playoffs (do backups gain worth when starters start to sit for example). My current roster questions concern:
WRs – S. Moss, Ochocinco, D. Mason, Crabtree, A. Bryant, A. Gonzalez, J. Shockey (it’s a WR/TE spot in the roster)
RBs – C. Johnson, S. Jackson, M. Bell, D. Brown, S. GreeneBrown, Bell, and Greene have potential but are taking up a large part of my bench for the third RB spot in the roster. I could probably also grab Moats or Fargas on the waiver this week. Bryant and Gonzalez were supposed to cure my crappy WR problems at the start of the season but have just taken roster spots. I have been hanging around .500 for the season and keep waiting for Addai to get injured, Pierre-Thomas to go down again, Gonzalez to come back, Bryant and his QB to stop sucking, etc. I figured hanging on to these guys would pay off later in the season and wondered if it is time to start dropping any of these players or if these backup types will pay off if I make the playoffs? So:
1. Is Gonzalez worth hanging on to?
2. Drop Bell, Brown, Greene (or any combination of the three)?
3. Replace any of the running backs with Moats or Fargas?
4. Grab P. Crayton or Garcon over Bryant or Gonzalez? Thanks
Brandon’s take: I think it’s probably safe to drop Donald Brown for Justin Fargas at this point. It’s not a huge upgrade, but at least Fargas gets a lot of carries on a regular basis. As for Ryan Moats, I wouldn’t bother. At wide receiver, unless your league awards points for return yards, Crayton has very little fantasy value. Anthony Gonzalez still has some upside if he can return in the next few weeks and is worth a roster spot if Crayton and Garcon are the best your free agent list has to offer. If there are other players available that you think might be up for consideration as a replacement for Gonzalez or Bryant, feel free to send them over and we’ll let you know what we think. Good luck!
E-Roc asks…
I wish I would have traded Steve Smith (CAR) for a WR who has a serviceable QB… that being said:
WR – Same question, diff week. S.Smith (CAR) v. SD or TJ Housh v. DET? Hard not to like any team playing the Lions.
RB – Kevin Smith (DET) @ SEA or McCoy (PHI) v. DAL? I don’t like either, but my options are limited with T.Jones on a Bye. The waiver-wire is empty, save, Ryan Moats & Jamaal Charles.
DEF – Colts (v. HOU) or Chargers (@ NYG)?Thanks!
Brandon’s take: At WR I like Houshmandzadeh. For your running back, go with LeSean McCoy, who has the most potential in a game that I think will end up with a lot of points on the scoreboard. Finally, for your defense, I’m not high on either this week, but the Colts at home is the safer bet.

Adam 11:41 am on 11/06/2009 Permalink |
Who should get the flex start: Steve Smith (Giants) or Kevin Smith? thanks!
Brandon 1:02 pm on 11/06/2009 Permalink |
Steve Smith. Kevin Smith is dealing with a shoulder injury right now and it’s unclear how much of the workload he’ll handle and how much will be pawned off to Maurice Morris.
Marcus 9:06 pm on 11/07/2009 Permalink
Which 2… Ronnie Brown, Jonathan Stewart, Ladainian Tomlinson?
Brandon 1:46 pm on 11/08/2009 Permalink
Ronnie Brown and LT.
Jason 1:48 pm on 11/06/2009 Permalink |
Hey guys, love the insights. I’ve saddled myself with several “meh” receivers. I’m obviously starting Ocho and VJax, but for my 3rd I’m stuck between Boldin (not happenin), Mike Wallace, Hakeem Nicks, or Malcolm Floyd (on waiver). What should I do?
Brandon 4:58 pm on 11/06/2009 Permalink |
I’d go with Hakeem Nicks for sure. He’s been one of Eli Manning’s go to guys over the past few weeks and it should continue this week against the Chargers.
Squish 6:05 am on 11/07/2009 Permalink
No question there. With Manningham likely still out, Hicks is the deep man on an offense that loves to throw deep.
e-roc 2:07 pm on 11/06/2009 Permalink |
LeSean is suffering from the flu and K.Smith has a bad shoulder… Sounds like a Sunday morning decision..? Maybe I’ll go pick up MoMorris who’s facing his former team…
Brandon 5:00 pm on 11/06/2009 Permalink |
Yeah, keep an eye on the situation. I still like McCoy and think he’ll have had enough time off to recover from the flu and put up better numbers than Smith or Morris.
Jonathan 2:12 pm on 11/06/2009 Permalink |
I have Laurence Maroney, Ricky Williams, Deangelo Williams, and Donald Brown. I am just wondering who I should start this week? Thanks guys.
Maroney is facing Dolphins
R. Williams is facing Patriots
D. Williams is facing New Orleans
Brown is facing Houston
Which two should I use this week?
Brandon 5:01 pm on 11/06/2009 Permalink |
DeAngelo Williams and Ricky Williams for sure.
Anthony 5:14 pm on 11/06/2009 Permalink |
Santana Moss or Devin Hester
Matt 3:05 am on 11/07/2009 Permalink |
Moss. By a mile. Hester is dependent on his speed and he’s coming back from an injury – not good. Moss is a major sleeper this week – potential for big things.
meany1413 5:57 pm on 11/06/2009 Permalink |
Hey guys
As of right now my running backs are Steven Jackson, Reggie Bush and Beanie Wells. All of them except for Jackson are splitting carries. There are a number of running backs that are still available in my league. Correll Buckhalter, LeSean McCoy and Marshawn Lynch are just three that are avaliable. Do you think I should go out and grab one of them while they are still available? If so, which ones?
Thanks
Matt 3:09 am on 11/07/2009 Permalink |
This is the kind of question that makes me wonder – how big is your league? 8 teams? How is Lynch on the waiver wire?
Anyway, the three backs you have are better than the options you named, so I’d stand pat.
Squish 6:25 am on 11/07/2009 Permalink
Lynch is unowned in several of my Fleaflicker leagues. I think people are scared of Fred Jackson’s role in the offense still plus the team as a whole sucks so there are plenty of reasons to holdout. McCoy is actually owned in almost as many of my leagues as Lynch.
Definitely grab Lynch though as he has a soft schedule in most of the playoffs.
Rob 2:07 am on 11/07/2009 Permalink |
moats, bush, bell, or maroney? i need three from that group…thanks!
Matt 3:11 am on 11/07/2009 Permalink |
Leave Bell on the sideline. The other three see regular action; Bell’s work is very hit or miss.
mikefraz 5:30 am on 11/07/2009 Permalink |
whats up guys , is it week 9 already?
I need some help with my lineup
We can start a 1 QB, 2 RB, 2 WR, 1 TE, 2 FLEX WR/RB WR/TE
QUARTERRBACKS: FLACCO, GARRARD
WIDE RECEIVERS: R MOSS, D JACKSON, MACLIN, BOLDIN, M AUSTIN, DRIVER
RUNNING BACKS: MJD, GORE, P THOMAS, MCCOY, WELLS, MENDENHAL
TIGHT ENDS: DANIELS(OUT), CELEK , BOSS
PLEASE HELP, WHO TO START????
Squish 6:12 am on 11/07/2009 Permalink |
Nice team! I’ll be really surprised if you don’t win this week!
At QB, Flacco and Garrard are a toss up but given Garrard’s inconsistencies of late, go with Flacoo at QB.
At WR, I’d go with Moss and DJax. They are just top tiered players that should always be started
At RB, MJD and Gore look good this week
For TE, Definitely go with Celek who has been a monster this year.
At WR/RB flex, definitely go with Pierre Thomas
At WR/TE definitely go with Miles Austin unless you really love Driver. Boldin is still injured and the GB passing offense as a whole won’t need to do much this week which will hurt Driver’s numbers. Austin is definitely the safe bet and even the favorite since he has a history of great games at Dallas.
Squish 6:20 am on 11/07/2009 Permalink |
Did anyone else get scared crapless by Sims-Walker last week? He only had 3 targets making him the 5th most targeted player on the team behind MJD, Holt, Thomas, and Wilford! I’m not sure I can trust him enough to start him this week especially since Jacksonville should barely have to pass at all.
Would you start him over Bowe, Housh, Burleson, S. Smith or S. Moss this week? I’m thinking no on all of those accounts and I might even start Nicks ahead of him this week. Any thoughts?
Squish 6:21 am on 11/07/2009 Permalink |
Either of the Steve Smith’s really.
Javier 10:10 am on 11/07/2009 Permalink
Considering that no other receiver (besdes MJD) did good against the Titans, I wouldn’t be surprised if they start targetting MSW again. I would use Bowe, Houh and Moss before him, tho.
Brandon 4:37 pm on 11/07/2009 Permalink |
I’m going to give Sims-Walker the benefit of the doubt and I would start him over almost all of those receivers, except maybe Housh and Smith. If he puts up another stinker though, then you have to rethink his “must start” status.
Squish 6:32 am on 11/07/2009 Permalink |
Houston’s offense this week gets a huge upgrade. The Colts put Safety Bob Sanders and will be missing two of their starting CBs this week. Play all your Houston WRs!
Javier 10:13 am on 11/07/2009 Permalink |
Jacoby Jones over Bowe, Randy Moss or either Steve Smith?
Javier 10:14 am on 11/07/2009 Permalink
Oh wait I have Addai on the flex spot… should I put Jacoby in there?
Brandon 4:36 pm on 11/07/2009 Permalink
No, keep Bowe, Moss, Smith and Addai in there.
Squish 6:33 pm on 11/07/2009 Permalink
When I said start your Houston receiver’s I meant the ones that are fantasy relevant lol. So basic AJ and Walters. Keep the lineup you had.
mikefraz 6:41 am on 11/07/2009 Permalink |
I’M IN A PPR LEAGUE
Javier 10:13 am on 11/07/2009 Permalink |
Me too
Brandon 4:35 pm on 11/07/2009 Permalink |
Woot woot! I prefer PPR leagues myself, but 0.5 points per reception is my favorite.
Rob 12:50 pm on 11/07/2009 Permalink |
Hey guys. I have 3 spots for Forte (v Arizona), Charles (v Jax), Ricky Williams (v Pats), Julius Jones (v Detroit) and Mendenhall (v Denver). I don’t like Forte’s production (last week he didn’t run well, even though he got the TDs), and it appears that teams are catching on to the wildcat (and I believe it will be a blowout and force the dolphins to pass), so my “top two” guys don’t look so good this week.
Brandon 4:34 pm on 11/07/2009 Permalink |
Although the match-ups aren’t great, I think you want to go with Forte, Williams and Mendenhall. Julius Jones hasn’t done much of anything lately and I don’t trust any Kansas City running back to help a fantasy team. Good luck though!
harry 1:56 pm on 11/07/2009 Permalink |
Defense…new england or denver?
Brandon 4:32 pm on 11/07/2009 Permalink |
New England. I don’t trust the Broncos against the high-flying Steelers after last weeks beat down by the Ravens.

Week 9
RB Justin Fargas
Ronnie Brown
Maurice Jones-Drew
Kevin Smith
WR Santana Moss
Santonio Holmes
Mike Sims-Walker
Steve Breaston
Week 9 PPR league 2 WR 2 RB 1 Flex who to start
Thanks
Brandon 4:33 pm on 11/07/2009 Permalink |
MJD and Brown at RB, Sims-Walker and Moss at WR, then Fargas at flex.
Helplease 4:44 pm on 11/07/2009 Permalink |
Woops Fargas has a bye leaves me with the line up I had RBs MJD Brown, WRs MSW Moss then flex I had Kevin Smith toss up with him and Breaston IMO who would you go with ?
Thanks
Brandon 10:21 am on 11/08/2009 Permalink |
Oops! I should have picked that up. Go with Kevin Smith over Breaston though.
Deano in Texas 11:10 pm on 11/07/2009 Permalink |
Hey guys. Thanks for the help. I have a DST question. The Pats are solid but I also have the 49ers who have a sweet matchup this week. Who would you pick?
Brandon 10:22 am on 11/08/2009 Permalink |
I like the Patriots. The Titans might be turning things around these days and their running game could give the 49ers a run for their money (pun intended.)
Deano 11:06 am on 11/08/2009 Permalink
Thanks Brandon. Here’s one more…Ronnie Brown or Laurence Maroney, or I could opt for another WR, I have Steve Smith NYG but he’s been kind of hit or miss. What do you think?
Brandon 1:46 pm on 11/08/2009 Permalink
Ronnie Brown
harry 11:29 am on 11/08/2009 Permalink |
ARGH…Moats starting over Slaton…Is it worth benching Slaton for J Stewart in my RB slot for today? Or is there a chance Slaton will be in the mix enough to leave him be? Thanks
Brandon 1:46 pm on 11/08/2009 Permalink |
I’m sure Slaton will still be in the mix, but I like Stewart more anyways today.
