Ask the Geeks: Week 9 (Part 3)

Wow! This has been our biggest Ask the Geeks week yet, so let's keep it going...

Kyle asks: What two should I start out of these three RBs? LaMont Jordan, Laurence Maroney, Jamal Lewis.

Brandon's take: Sorry Kyle, but I'm not digging your RB options this week. However, if you have to go with two of those, I'd recommend Laurence Maroney and Jamal Lewis. After a solid start, LaMont Jordan has been terrible the past few weeks and it looks like Justin Fargas and Domanic Rhodes will be stealing carries all season long. While Maroney and Lewis aren't great plays on a week-to-week basis, they should do better than Jordan will.

Matt's take: Jordan posted an absolutely horrible yards-per-carry average last week (just barely over 1.0), so with so many options in the Oakland backfield, it's hard to see the coaching staff giving him a full load. This is a backfield to avoid completely until further notice.

Kev asks: We start 3 WRs. I have Housh, Jennings, Roddy White, Deion Branch, Chambers, and Reggie Brown. Housh is a given. I'm not sure which other two to start from the remainding five. From what I'm reading, White and Chambers have the best matchups.

Brandon's take: At this point, it's not a given that Deion Branch will even play this week, so cross him off your list. As you said, Houshmandzadeh is a must start at this point, so your decision is between Jennings, White, Chambers and Brown. Chambers has a great matchup against an anemic Minnesota pass defense, so start him. For your last spot, White, Jennings and Brown make pretty equal plays, but I'd play Jennings just because I have more confidence in his quarterback than the other two (White or Brown).

Matt's take: Don't ignore Deion Branch if he's starting! Keep an eye on his status and put him (along with Housh and Chambers) in if he gets the start. His matchup with Cleveland is a beautiful thing.

Ryan asks: Got a RB dilemma… I have LJ, Maurice Jones-Drew, LenDale White, and I just grabbed Chris Henry off waivers this week. I start 2 RBs, and I'm thinking about going with LJ and LenDale, and leaving MJD's inconsistency on the bench. Do you agree? Also, I start 2 WRs and am thinking about Wes Welker and Santonio Holmes, while benching Shaun McDonald and Derrick Mason. Any objections?

Brandon's take: In terms of running backs, I agree that you should start Larry Johnson and LenDale White. Chris Henry just got busted for some banned substance, but that won't prevent him from playing this week. However, you obviously wouldn't start a backup (Henry) over the starter (White). Jones-Drew has only really had 2 solid fantasy games this season, and I don't see this being his third. Keep him on the bench.

As for wide receivers, I also agree with your selections. Wes Welker should have a great game against Indy and Holmes should do alright. I don't see McDonald or Mason putting up great fantasy stats this week.

Matt's take: I'm with Brandon on the RBs - even though MJD would be a starter this week on most teams, LJ's a must-play and White's on a roll. And good call on your WRs.

JT asks: Quick Question... Favre or McNabb Sunday? Favre vs. KC or McNabb vs. Dal

Brandon's take: Kansas City has been good against the pass this year, only allowing 6 touchdowns through the air. Dallas on the other hand, has allowed 11 touchdowns. However, Favre has played well this year against some good defenses and I wouldn't be surprised to see that trend continue. Go with Favre.

Matt's take: It's a tough call for me given the defenses, but I like Favre here too.

Adam asks: Who would you start as a third WR in week 9: Derrick Mason @ Pit, Roddy White vs San Fran, or Kevin Walter @ Oakland?

Brandon's take: You could roll a dice here, as all three are pretty equal plays to get you 75 yards and a chance at a touchdown. If I was to pick one though, I'd go with Roddy White I guess, as he's playing the worst defense of the three.

Matt's take: Personally, I'd go with the guy with a reliable quarterback throwing him the ball, even against a tough Oakland pass defense. Walter's my pick.
