Again, before we get started with the questions, I just wanted to remind everyone that we’re running a contest for a $50 NFL.com gift card, which you can win by simply picking the quarterback who will score the most fantasy points this week. The entries will be cut off soon, so get your pick in quickly!
Anyways, here are our final Ask the Geek questions for week nine. If you have any more questions, you can leave them as comments on the post and hopefully some of our excellent readers can help you out (if we’re not able to get to them.)
Shirley asks…
I have both Slaton & Moats in one league (non-PPR, start 2 RBs, one flex spot). Coach Kubiak announced that Moats would be the starter so should I start Moats and sit Slaton? My other RBs are Frank Gore, Ricky Williams and Beanie Wells.
Brandon’s take: How about you start Frank Gore and Ricky Williams instead? Moats and Slaton are not poised for a huge game against the Colts and it’s probably not worth the gamble on seeing who gets the most production. If I was going to start one of them though, I guess I would go with Moats and hope that the head coach isn’t playing mind games. Good luck!
Marcus asks…
I have 3 RB’s I can start two. I have Jonathan Stewart CAR, Ronnie Brown MIA, and Ladainian Tomlinson SD. Which two do I start?
Brandon’s take: Ronnie Brown and LT.
Jones asks…
Pick 2 from this group: S. Moss, Driver, Crabtree, S. Smith(NYG), Westbrook
Brandon’s take: Although he’s a risky play, I like Brian Westbrook. For the other guy, go with Donald Driver against Tampa Bay.
Masonic Light asks…
I have Larry Fitz., Chad 88, Derrick Mason and Steve Smith (NYG) which 3 should i start. also Portis or gamble with Moats?
Brandon’s take: Interesting name Mr. Freemason, but as for your receivers, go with Fitzgerald, Ochocinco, and Mason. At running back, go with Portis.
JoeMcK asks…
I think Miles Austin may be due to come back down to Earth with a solid Eagles secondary no afraid of Williams/Witten. Also liking Breaston if Boldin is a scratch? Should I start Austin or Breaston?
Brandon’s take: Start Austin. Let him prove if he’s the real deal or not and if he does, you don’t want him riding the pine.
Nick asks…
I need to start 2 WR, 2 RB and a Flex in a PPR league. I have Roddy White, Hines Ward and Houshmandzadeh. I’m starting Ray Rice but also have Jamaal Charles and Steve Slaton. Who do I start as my RB2 and Flex.
Brandon’s take: Start White, Ward, Housh, Rice and Charles. Slaton isn’t starting today and is a definite wildcard that might not be worth the risk.
Jonathan asks…
Hello, just found y’alls blog and thought it looked good. I’m trying to decide if I should start Calvin Johnson in his first week back from injury against a mediocre Seahawks defense, or Mike Wallace in a game that should see a lot of passing and good coverage on Santonio Holmes. Thanks a lot!
Brandon’s take: I just watched ESPN and it’s still not a given that Calvin Johnson will play (John Clayton seems to think that if it’s raining, he might not play.) Get Mike Wallace in there to be safe.
TJ asks…
Hey guys, hope you can help me out again. I’m in a 10-team, non-ppr, start 2 RB, 2 WR, Q, TE, K, D/ST.
RBs: I have S-Jax, Wells, J Charles, M Bell, & Maroney, and available FAs are: Buckhalter, F Jones & Choice, Fargas, Sproles, Cadillac, Harrison, Shonn Greene, Forsett. The two big questions are: Who to start this week (w/Charles, I assume..), who to get/hold on to going foprward, and who to drop…..
WR: I have Welker, Ochocinco, SimsWalker, M. Austin. I’m guessing Welker is a given, who would you choose between the others? (I think Ocho & MSW are probably the best bet, can’t decide…..) Also: Between Sidney Rice or Smith (NYG) on the roster, who would you choose?
TE: If Witten can’t make it happen this week, do you think I should start thinking about giving up on him? Have Shiancoe, Davis, Finley, Havner, Boss, Heap still available FAs for now. Thanks as always, you guys are great!!!
Brandon’s take: At RB, go with Charles and if possible, grab Felix Jones off free agency. You can drop Laurence Maroney for him if necessary. As for your WR, go with Welker, Ochocinco and Sims-Walker, as you mentioned. Finally, at TE, I don’t think you’re going to want to give up on Witten for any of those guys. He should have a big game today.

would you start jamal charles or steve slaton? non ppr
Squish 1:24 pm on 11/08/2009 Permalink |
Charles for sure. Slaton lost the starting job for this week.

Brandon, I’ve got the Pats DST vs MIA or 49ers vs Ten. Who do you like? Thanks!!
Shirley 1:01 pm on 11/08/2009 Permalink |
I think you’d have a better shot with the Niners defense. It’s possible Chris Johnson might run up a lot of yards on you (not quite as much as he did on JAX) but I don’t think Vince Young will be able to do all that much against the Niners. But Nate Clements is also out so it decreases the Niners D/ST value a bit.

Play the 49ers. The Patriots just named their top two run stoppers inactive against a run happy team. Look for Miami to have a big day on the ground.

Scratch that, I read it wrong, Miami is the one losing their two best run stoppers. I still like SF though since they make more big plays.

Brandon, I can start 2 RBs and a RB/WR in a flex spot. I was already going to start Gore and have Williams as a flex but I was wondering whether I should start Moats or Slaton in the other RB spot which you answered for me. My only other WR sitting on the bench (that’s not injured or on a bye) is Laveraneus Coles.

Moats is starting over Slaton this week so go with him.
Matt 1:56 pm on 11/08/2009 Permalink
Yep. I wouldn’t trust Slaton at all – he’s in the doghouse.
Squish 1:30 pm on 11/08/2009 Permalink |
Maroney becomes a new sleeper this week with Miami naming two of their best run stoppers inactive (LB Channing Chowder and DT Jason Ferguson). Get him in there if you still tossing up the idea of playing him or another second rate back/WR. He’ll be a great flex play this week.
Jones 1:40 pm on 11/08/2009 Permalink |
Westbrook is looking doubtful to play. How does that change your answer to me above? I also have Moats.
Squish 1:44 pm on 11/08/2009 Permalink |
I’m not one of the Geeks but given your time crunch I’d say take a chance on Santan Moss instead of Moats to replace Westbrook. Moats is a bit of a risk and Moss is playing in an offense that should have to pass a ton today.

Steve Smith is an even play too. NYG is struggling but he’ll be a reasonable play too. But definitely replace Westbrook. Who you replace him with is up to you but go with one of those two WRs. For reference, most have Steve Smith ahead in the projections.
