Here is our first round of Ask the Geek questions for week seven. Remember, you can ask the geeks here or simply leave your questions as comments on our posts and we’ll try our best to respond to them as soon as possible.
Greg asks…
I have a huge conflict here. I know this should be an easy choice. I have to choose between Sidney Rice & Micheal Crabtree? Rice had a couple great games lately….I would assume they are gonna work Crabtree alot. Who do I start?
Brandon’s take: Ummm, DEFINITELY start Sidney Rice. Did you see his numbers last game (six catches for 176 yards?!) Even against the Steelers, Rice will get more looks and playing time, along with better fantasy stats than an unproven, hold-out receiver who has only had a few weeks to learn the teams offense.
Shane asks…
I have Edwards, Manningham, and Miles Austin…I can start 2…Austin and Edwards? I am worried about Oakland’s DB’s…thoughts?
Brandon’s take: I’d go with Braylon Edwards and Mario Manningham. I need at least one more big game from Miles Austin before I believe he’s the real deal, especially if Roy Williams returns this week.
Greg asks…
Do I accept a Trade Marshawn Lynch for Ryan Grant? I have had Grant all season so far and he hasnt produced much. However, He is playing my Browns this week which I hate to admitt can be a great fantasy day for him. Lynch will prob split carries…What do I do?
Brandon’s take: Keep Grant. Lynch will split carries with Fred Jackson all year, while Ryan Grant shoulders the load for Green Bay. Neither will be a top-tier RB this year, but I think Grant has the most value long term.
Wolf asks…
Which TE do you think is going to perform better this week and why…
Brent Celek @Was
Shockey @Mia
Owen Daniels vs SFAnd who do you think has more value down the road come playoff time?
Brandon’s take: All of those guys make for good options, but I’d go with Owen Daniels, who has been on fire lately and is Matt Schaub’s second favorite target after Andre Johnson.
Matt asks…
Should I (start) Jeremy Maclin or Roy Williams over Steve Smith (CAR)? Also, Bradshaw or Barber? Thanks
Brandon’s take: Jeremy Maclin is intriguing, but he’s liable to put up another poor performance like last week. Go with Steve Smith and hope his complaining means more passes his way. As for your running back, I’d go with Marion Barber.
Mark asks…
I have two running back slots in a non-PPR league and I’m not sure which two to start: Ahmad Bradshaw, Carnell Williams, and/or Tashard Choice. I like Williams chances this week against New England, but I’m curious what you all would do.
Brandon’s take: I’d go with Bradshaw and Williams, since you probably won’t know if Choice is Dallas’ second or third running back until game time. However, I don’t think Cadillac will do all that much against the Patriots, as the Bucs will be down early and will be throwing the ball all day.
Edwin asks…
Hello, I have a question about my running backs. I have Frank Gore and I really want to start him but I also have Fed Jackson (Buf) and Steven Jackson (Stl.). Only 2 RB positions, who should I sit? On another team, I have Leon Washington, Reggie Bush, Correll Buckhalter and hoping I get Maroney and it is 2 RB positions with Flex.
Brandon’s take: In the first league, go with Frank Gore and Steven Jackson, as Marshawn Lynch will get the bulk of the carries this weekend. In the second league, go with Maroney (if you got him,) Bush and Washington, as Buckhalter is on a BYE anyways.
Anthony asks…
Hi, currently, I have Rivers, MJD, and Ronnie Brown as my main offense, and I need an elite WR. I have MSW, but even though he’s good, I don’t want to have two players on the same team, so I’m thinking about trading him. Do you know who has about the same value as him, or a player someone is willing to trade for him?
Brandon’s take: If I were you I would just keep Sims-Walker, as he’s been very consistent and there is really no reason to worry about having both a running back AND wide receiver from the same team. Both he and MJD have bee producing for your team and isn’t that what you want from them? If you still insist on trading him, receivers putting up similar numbers include: Brandon Marshall, Chad Ochocinco, and DeSean Jackson. Derrick Mason is close as well, but I don’t like him as much as the others listed.
Ken asks…
Hey guys–Let’s paint my Sunday picture…Saints are going for it on 4th down on their first drive from the 1-yard line…out goes the Cruiser, in comes Mike Bell for a score. “Mike **bleeping** Bell!”, I echoed. What’s the deal here? Here’s my roster. As you can see, I’m loaded with Saints, and I want another big-time WR. I’ve got Roddy White on my radar for a possible trade. I had Randy Moss but after today someone would be a moron to trade him. Is it time to shop Mike Bell and lose my insurance policy on PT? I feel like now (especially for some teams in my big money league who need RB’s) I can get something for either Jamal Lewis Appreciate the help. Thanks!
Drew Brees (QB)
Wes Welker (WR)
Derrick Mason (WR)
Lance Moore (WR)
Kevin Walter (WR)
Eddie Royal (WR)
Ronnie Brown (RB)
Pierre Thomas (RB)
Mike Bell (RB)
Jamal Lewis (RB)
Brandon Jacobs (RB)
Minnesota (DEF)
John Carslon (TE)
Lawrence Tynes (K)
Brandon’s take: I think the addition of Roddy White to your team would be great and much needed, but I can’t imagine you get a whole lot of value for Mike Bell. I don’t even know any managers who would trade White for Bell and Jamal Lewis combined. What kind of trade are you looking to put together for Roddy White?

mark 3:05 pm on 10/22/2009 Permalink |
Who to start, Terrell Owens or Michael Crabtree?
Brandon 3:31 pm on 10/22/2009 Permalink |
I can’t recommend anyone start Michael Crabtree until he’s at least played one game. While I don’t think T.O. will do all that great this week, he’ll get more looks than Crabtree and has a lot more potential this week.
KKK 1:22 pm on 10/23/2009 Permalink
Disagree, Houston’s run D is so bad that gore will be getting the hand offs but since the Texans’ off. is so high octane the niners will have to go to the air. Houston only has college video on this guy, he has something to prove, and SIngletary doesn’t just start you as the number 1 if you aren’t getting looks.
Brandon 8:48 am on 10/26/2009 Permalink
Looks like I was wrong…pretty sad moment for T.O., when he’s outperformed by a rookie who held out until mid-season and plays for the 49ers!
Javier 3:32 pm on 10/22/2009 Permalink |
Knox@Cir or Dwayne Bowe vs. SD? I also need a backup RB to cover a bye, should I keep Mike Bell@Mia or try to pick Don Brown from waivers (I am already starting Addai).
Brandon 2:41 pm on 10/23/2009 Permalink |
Even with Addai already starting, I think I’d go with Donal Brown against the Rams. As for your receiver, go with Dwayne Bowe.
B Cole 4:14 pm on 10/22/2009 Permalink |
I have Ray Rice and Chris Johnson on a bye this week, so my RB options are Matt Forte, Reggie Bush, and Jamal Lewis. I need to start two of them, I guess, so really it comes down to Bush or Lewis.
Down the stretch, which of the following are more likely to have a real impact: Jamaal Charles, Glen Coffee, or LeSean McCoy?
Brandon 2:46 pm on 10/23/2009 Permalink |
I like Forte and Bush, but with Reggie Bush you have to hope he can somehow find the endzone for him to have a lot of value. As for those running backs, McCoy has the most value in the long term for sure.
Jones 5:12 pm on 10/22/2009 Permalink |
RB/WR spot: Westbrook, Mendenhall or Driver? (Sidney Rice and Breaston are available on waiver.)
Brandon 2:44 pm on 10/23/2009 Permalink |
Even against a tough Vikings defense, I’d go with Mendenhall. However, I recommend you pick up Rice and Breaston if possible, as they are solid WR’s that you might want to play depending on the match-up.
Tyler 8:01 pm on 10/22/2009 Permalink |
Marshawn Lynch or Reggie Bush or Steve Slaton, i start 2 of 3
Brandon 2:42 pm on 10/23/2009 Permalink |
Lynch and Slaton.
David 10:55 pm on 10/22/2009 Permalink |
Hey Guys, I really appreciate all the work you do. I need to start two of the following RBs: Brandon Jacobs, Leon Washington or Donald Brown. (MJD and Buckhalter are on bye this week).
Brandon 2:38 pm on 10/23/2009 Permalink |
Go with Jacobs and Washington.
John 8:27 am on 10/23/2009 Permalink |
Hi, I’m in a 0.25 PPR league, I need one WR, and two W/R. I have
Laurence Maroney
Devin Hester
Santana Moss
Lance Moore
Tashard Choice
Chester Taylor
Mohamed Massaquoi
Cadillac Williams
Which three guys will help me win this week? Thanks!
Brandon 2:48 pm on 10/23/2009 Permalink |
Go with Maroney, Moore and Hester.
Stediberto 11:52 am on 10/23/2009 Permalink |
I was offered Calvin Johnson & Matt Shaub for Kerry Collins and Marshall. Do it?
Glory Hog 12:42 pm on 10/23/2009 Permalink |
Yes.
Brandon 2:36 pm on 10/23/2009 Permalink |
WHA?!! Hopefully you already accepted this trade, since it’s insanely favoring you! Schaub is about 500x better than Collins and when he’s not hurt, Calvin Johnson is equal to (if not better) than Marshall. GET MEGATRON AND SCHAUB ASAP!
Brian 11:53 am on 10/23/2009 Permalink |
Who do you like this and coming weeks
Shiancoe or Vernon Davis
Brandon 2:33 pm on 10/23/2009 Permalink |
I’m leaning towards Shiancoe, who has been on fire lately. The Texans are actually pretty good against the tight end position, which is why I have Vernon Davis on the “miss” list this week.
Brian 8:37 am on 10/26/2009 Permalink
You missed this one, no worries though
Brandon 8:45 am on 10/26/2009 Permalink
Yeah, I think the entire world underestimated the Alex Smith-to-Vernon Davis love affair! Looks like Smith may have the starting gig for the time being, so you’ll probably want to keep Davis in there next week. Did you end up winning anyways?
Adam 12:32 pm on 10/23/2009 Permalink |
I need to start 2 of these four flex options. Which should I use?
DeSean Jackson (against a tough Washington defense that plagued him last year)
Larry Johnson (coming off a good week against a so-so SD run defense)
Brent Celek (TE, so less upside)
Donald Brown (Good matchup @StL, but not the key RB)
Thanks!
Brandon 2:35 pm on 10/23/2009 Permalink |
I’d go with DeSean Jackson and Brent Celek, even if they’re competing for receptions from Donovan McNabb. Those guys have a lot more upside than the other two.
Jason 3:01 pm on 10/23/2009 Permalink |
Hey guys, love the site. I’m screwed at RB this week with MJD and CJ on byes. I’m torn between Tashard Choice and Mike Bell as my RB2. Any thoughts?
Brandon 11:49 am on 10/24/2009 Permalink |
I like Tashard Choice, as I think he’ll be given more chances to produce. Bell has basically been relegated to a goal-line back at this point, while Choice will still get carries between the 20′s. There is also a chance that Felix Jones is limited this week too, so Choice should see more action (plus Jerry Jones promised he would!)
Amir 4:06 pm on 10/23/2009 Permalink |
Donald Brown or Santana Moss — ugh have to sit Ray Rice MSW and Housh this week Yikes!
Brandon 11:17 am on 10/24/2009 Permalink |
Both are hit or miss plays, but I’m leaning towards Donald Brown against a Rams defense that is giving up a lot of points to running backs this week, while the Eagles have been pretty good against wide receivers. Brown will still split carries with Addai, but he should get a few carries in the redzone that lead to a touchdown.
Matt 5:32 pm on 10/23/2009 Permalink |
Okay guys, I have a problem but an awesome problem to have.
My WR Core:
Moss
Mario Manningham
Hakeen Nicks
Lance Moore
Miles Austin
Kevin Walter
My RB Core:
Pierre Thomas
LT
Felix Jones
Shonn Greene (wakka wakka)
I know I want an angry LT in there, Moss, but the rest??
Also Vernon Davis is on waivers; drop Walter for him?
Brandon 11:46 am on 10/24/2009 Permalink |
If you’re staring two running backs, go with PT and LT. At wide receiver, the three I like the most are Moss (Randy I assume), Manningham and Moore. Miles Austin was a close fourth, but I’m still not convinced that his last performance wasn’t a once in a lifetime game.
As for Vernon Davis, grab him if he’s an upgrade at the tight end position for your team. If you don’t plan on starting him though, I’d keep Walter.
Finally, you might want to think about trading Manningham or Nicks. With both players on the same team and putting up similar numbers, it’s going to be tough to decide which of the two to start from week to week. I chose Manningham because he’s the “starter” still, but it’s almost a coin flip as to who will get the better numbers each game.
benjamin 5:22 pm on 10/24/2009 Permalink
Thanks brandon! Yeah I was just thinking that about nicks. Great blog man! Two year reader!
Glory Hog 7:06 pm on 10/23/2009 Permalink |
I was offered (in a non-ppr league):
Mendenhall, Cassel, Mason for Andre Johnson, Michael Bush, Trent Edwards (he would take Moss instead of Johnson, but I love Moss)
my current RB’s are: Gore, Coffee, M. Bush, Harrison, Mike Bell, M. Moore
my current WR (no TEs) are: A. Johnson, R. Moss, Celek, Harvin
Should I do this? should I trade Moss instead of Johnson?
thanks
Brandon 11:39 am on 10/24/2009 Permalink |
Although it’s tough to trade away one of the top scoring wide receiver in the league, you have to consider what you’re getting/giving up at each position. Let’s take the quarterbacks out of this deal, since I assume they’d be your backup anyways and don’t add a lot to the deal. The real trade is Rashard Mendenhall and Derrick Mason for Andre Johnson. Mendenhall will start for your team alongside Frank Gore right away and makes a big improvement to the position on your team. At wide receiver, you’ll lose Johnson, but you’re getting a receiver in Derrick Mason that is only really a couple points per week worse. I’d go with the trade. Keep Randy Moss though, as I think he has the better chance to score touchdowns in bunches. Good luck!
Brandon 11:42 am on 10/24/2009 Permalink |
Can you do the trade AFTER this week though? When Derrick Mason isn’t on a bye?
Glory Hog 4:28 pm on 10/24/2009 Permalink
possibly. the guy is offering the trade because he is hurting with bye weeks. I passed on the trade for now, but if it’s there next week I may go for it. Thanks for the help
Kulprit 7:58 pm on 10/23/2009 Permalink |
Here is my scenario, my 3 main WR are 1) Fitzgerald 2) Steven Smith (NYG) and 3) Vincent Jackson. I have Kevin Walter on the bench and he hasn’t done much of anything even with the Texans scoring at on of points.
My question is should I take a chance and drop Walter for Miles Austin? He’s still available after his huge week and now that he’s starting it might be worth a shot. I already have Anthony Gonzalez on the bench who I picked up this week as I have the room and enough of a lead to take on a gamble like this.
I think Austin has a lot more upside then Walter does, and if I can catch a few good weeks with Austin I migh be able to spin him for a trade for an upgrade somewhere.
Kulprit 10:00 am on 10/24/2009 Permalink |
Well Miles Austin was picked up last night. So my same question then extends to Hakeem Nicks? Again I feel he has a large upside.
Brandon 11:31 am on 10/24/2009 Permalink
Grab Hakeem Nicks. He’s become one of Eli’s favorite targets in the endzone and has three touchdowns in three games already.
Jake 8:35 pm on 10/23/2009 Permalink |
Should I start Reggie bush or Donald driver as my flex play?
Brandon 11:29 am on 10/24/2009 Permalink |
Donald Driver.
Bribo 8:30 am on 10/24/2009 Permalink |
Steelers D or Colts D? H Miller or Witten at TE? Pick up Donald Brown or Leon Washington (better overall pick-up, not just this week)? Thanks dudes!
Brandon 11:28 am on 10/24/2009 Permalink |
Colts for your defense. As for your tight end, Miller has the better match-up against the Vikings, who are giving up the most points in the league to the tight end position, but the Falcons aren’t all that far behind them. Go with Witten and expect Romo to look his way often. As for the running back, grab Leon Washington, who makes a better start from week-to-week at this point.
apk 10:48 am on 10/24/2009 Permalink |
Do I start LeSean McCoy (@Wash monday night) or Leon Washington (@oakland) this week?
Who do you see as the best running backs during weeks 15 & 16? (fantasy playoffs)
Brandon 11:25 am on 10/24/2009 Permalink |
Go with Leon Washington, who will get more chances than McCoy. As for the best running backs during weeks 15 and 16, if you mean across the league, some of the guys I like include Adrian Peterson, Chris Johnson, Rashard Mendenhall and even Brandon Jacobs (who I think will have turned things around by then.)
Jason 5:20 pm on 10/24/2009 Permalink |

Hey Brandon, got this problem (non-ppr league)
For 2 WR slots: Wayne, Steve Smith (NYG), Andre Johnson…
For 2 RB slots: Bradshaw, PT, Ryan Grant, R. Williams
Guess Wayne & Johnson are obvious… but which RBs? And do I plug Smith into the Flex? Thanks…

should i start donald drvier or michale crabtree. driver is playing the vikings in week 8 and crabtree is playing th colts in week 8. who should i start
Brandon 6:35 pm on 10/27/2009 Permalink |
I’d go with Donald Driver. Last week I was wrong about picking Crabtree over T.O., but I honestly can’t put Crabtree in Driver’s league until he gets a few more games under his belt. Also, you’ll want to see what Alex Smith does in his return to the starting quarterback job.
Steve 7:56 pm on 10/27/2009 Permalink |
I’m not sure what to do during week 8 – M. Crabtree, S. Smith NYG, or S Smith Car. I only need to pick one to line up with V. Jackson and A. Gates (WR/TE). Any ideas at all??
Brandon 9:39 pm on 10/27/2009 Permalink |
Go with the New York variety of Steve Smith. He’s the most consistent and in the best passing offense at the moment.
jake 5:47 pm on 10/28/2009 Permalink |
should i start steven jackosn or ray rice. steven jackson is playing detroit and rice is playing broncos. jackson has not yet made it to the redzone and his team sucks. rice is a beast but playing a undefeatable team, who should i start
Brandon 1:36 pm on 10/29/2009 Permalink |
I prefer Steven Jackson (who made my “hit” list this week) over Ray Rice…even though both will most likely put up good numbers.
Cheryl 7:42 pm on 11/04/2009 Permalink |
Ok I am stacked with RB (Gore, R. Brown, Turner, Barber, T. Jones, K. Smith)….but not as strong in WR’s (A. Johnson, Boldin, B. Marshall). I was just offered a trade that would give me Crabtree for Marshall…..what is your advice?
Brandon 2:39 pm on 11/05/2009 Permalink |
Wha?! No, definitely do not do this trade. The hope is that Crabtree becomes as good as Brandon Marshall and all you’re doing is downgrading your WR position. With all that talent at running back, wouldn’t you want to trade an RB for help at WR instead?
