Ask the Geeks: Week 6, Part 1

Matt's take: Of the available guys you list, the only one I might want on my bench is Norwood, because of the likelihood that Warrick Dunn will go down with an injury at some point, which would grant Norwood instant feature-back status (albeit on a team that can't run the ball very well... it's so weird to be saying that about the Falcons). Morris, Taylor and Morency are all iffy guys, but I'm not certain that any of them are more iffy than Norwood. Morris will spend the majority of his time on the bench when Maroney returns, Taylor's got a tweaked hammy and Jones-Drew nipping at his heels after a nice performance in KC, and Green Bay's running back situation is more of a brigade than a platoon, so who knows what kind of action Morency will get in the coming weeks. Personally, I tend to avoid confusing situations like the plague, so I'd drop Morency in favor of Norwood, but if Dunn stays healthy, Norwood's not going to have much value.
Brandon's take: If your league awards points for kick returns, then Leon Washington has some value (two 98 yard kick returns for TD's so far), otherwise though he has proven to be fairly worthless so far...trust me, I had him in multiple teams. While Norwood may have the greatest updside, he won't produce in the short term as long as Dunn stays healthy. Brown and Davenport are the most consistent running backs at this point. Brown has gotten over 10 carries a game so far this season, while Davenport has seemed to claim the goal-line back role in Pittsburgh. Davenport is averaging 7.5 yards a carry and has 3 touchdowns at this point, so I wouldn't be surprised to see him take a few more carries from Willie Parker each week. I don't like Morency at all, so I would ultimately recommend you drop him and pick up Davenport.
Matt's take: Before this weekend, I would have told you to pull the trigger, but seeing Davenport vulture two touchdowns from Parker should give you pause. You do not want the lightning in a lightning-and-thunder operation if you can help it. Alexander might have lost a step or two, but he still gets the call at the goal line, partially because his backup, Mo Morris, just plain sucks at life. Plus, check out Alexander's schedule the rest of the way: He's got a total of two tough matchups (Chicago and Baltimore), one so-so matchup (Philly), and will spend the rest of his time stomping on the likes of New Orleans, St. Louis (twice), Cleveland, San Fran, Arizona, and Carolina. Also, Seattle did make plans in the preseason to involve Alexander more in the passing game; those plans got sidelined for a while because of him bum hand, but as that heals, you can expect him to start catching more passes.
Brandon's take: Hmm...that trade is a tough one. First of all, I barely even consider Tatum Bell as part of the trade, as he's useless at this point. Dallas Clark is currently dominating Crumpler in the TE department, and if Harrison is hampered by injury for a while, it could stay that way. Also, the way I see it is that Pittsburgh is a run-first team (with no serious run stopping defenses on the schedule except maybe New England), and will continue to be even if Davenport takes some carries. I see Seattle as a pass-first team at this point (although against Pittsburgh they were a suck-always team), so I don't see Alexander really improving all that much. I'm worried that SA will pull a Rip Hamilton, and wear that hand cast all season as he gets use to it...which would limit his pass catching. My vote...pull the trigger!
Brandon's take: I dropped Bulger in one of my leagues, so there's my answer to that one. In terms of the receivers, are you asking whether to start them in week 6? Drop them? Pick them up? If it's to start them in week 6, Evans has a bye, so don't start him. Don't drop him either, as last week's performance gives me hope that he could be coming around. Pick him up if he's a free agent. Andre Davis is only valuable while Andre Johnson is out, but I'd start him over Crayton for week 6, as Crayton is playing the Patriots and only has one good game this whole season so far. Neither should be dropped at this point, unless there's something better on free agency/waiver wire. Maybe that answered your question regarding them, but if not, please write back to clarify.
Matt's take: Jesus Brandon, we don't agree on anything today. I don't think you drop Bulger. Come fantasy playoff time, his ribs may have healed enough to get him back in the lineup and effective again. But, this depends on your other options and how many bench spots you have available.
And yeah... I don't really know what you were getting at regarding the receivers.

I'm gonna start posting using Dan-o because there's just too many other Dan's out there. Anyways, I don't think you should be dropping Bulger at this point unless you're really desperate and need that bench spot for someone else. He'll be back at some point, and I think it would be crazy to get rid of him unless absolutely necessary, you should try to wait until you see what he can do when his ribs are healed.

Well the way I see it with Bulger is this...most likely you're in a one QB league, so you would generally have two quarterbacks (one for the bye week or matchups). If you're carrying Bulger at this point, it most likely means that you need three QB's. If your bench is small, then you most likely will have to drop him if you have a bad bye week with lots of conflicts. Otherwise though, do you really think the minuscule chance that Bulger will come back and perform a lot better than free agents such as Kurt Warner and Daunte Culpepper is worth the roster spot he'll be hogging all season? Also, when the Rams are 0-8, will they be in a rush to get their huge-contract QB back in the line-up?
