Ask the Geeks: Week 5

Dan asks: Andre Davis (vs. Miami, should start with Andre Johnson and Jacoby Jones still out) or Darrell Jackson (vs. Baltimore)? Miami's D has been bad, but that's because of their run defense (ranked 32nd), not their pass defense (ranked 2nd). Jackson hasn't been great, and he's up against Baltimore with a new QB, so I'm leaning away from him.

Brandon's take: I would go with Andre Davis this week after the way he seemed to mesh with Matt Schaub last week (117 yards and a TD). It seems that Schaub only needs one "go to" guy each week, and due to injury troubles with Andre Johnson and Jacoby Jones, that guy is Davis. Jackson is on one of my teams and is yet to impress me. I see much more upside with Davis.

Matt's take: Miami's secondary is very, very bad. That swings the balance to Davis this week.

Dan asks: Jamal Lewis (vs. New England) or Ron Dayne (vs. Miami)? This is a much easier decision if Ahman Green starts this week, but for the sake of argument, assume that Dayne is starting. I'm thinking Lewis is up against a good D, and his team will probably be behind, which means they'll also be throwing a lot and that won't leave Lewis with many opportunities.

Brandon's take: This is not a very glamorous decision you have to make there Dan. Dayne started last week and still only rushed for 62 yards (and "disappointed" his coach on short yardage carries). It appears that Green will be day-to-day for this Sunday, so that always makes a fantasy manager squirm. I see very little chance of Lewis doing anything against the Patriots, as Derek Anderson will be forced to throw to Braylon Edwards and Kellen Winslow all game long, so go with Dayne against the worst rush defense in the NFL to this point (giving up about 200 yards rushing per game).

Matt's take: Here's the problem: Green's going to be a game-time decision. Dayne would still get some work if Green starts, but I'd rather go with a known commodity: Lewis will grind for 50-70 yards and maybe pick up a goal-line score.

Richard asks: thanks for your help and work put into this site. in my final flex position should go with Ron Dayne v. Miami or Lee Evans v. Dallas. The rest of my lineup seems set with Plaxico the TD machine and andre davis at wr and larry johnson and travis henry at rb (the anti-TD machines so far) and brandon marshall at first flex. i have selvin young to sub if henry doesn't play.

Brandon's take: As with Dan, you're choosing the lesser of two fantasy evils here. As Matt suggested in his fantasy "shockers" post, Evans could go off this week, so here's my suggestion...Dayne is almost assured to get you a solid 5-8 fantasy points, so if you feel that the game is going to be real close and you definitely need points from this position, you would want to start him. Evans is obviously the home run threat, so if you feel that your game will not be all that close (or you're undefeated and could stand to lose a game), you could put in Evans and hope for that 80 yard TD reception. Straight up though, I would put in Ron Dayne as the Miami rush defense is terrible.

Matt's take: Again, I'd be hesitant to start Dayne if the Texans wait until the last minute to announce whether Green will start. I do like Evans' potential this week, and I'd put him in there.
