Ask the Geeks: Week 16

For all of you that made your league's championship game this weekend, tonight begins your last match of the season, so good luck! Hopefully we can answer some last minute questions to get you that trophy.

Patrick asks: In week 16 do I start Marshawn Lynch (RB-BUF) versus the Giants or Kolby Smith (RB-KC) at Detroit?

Brandon's take: Patrick, I'd go with Kolby Smith for a few reasons: (a) Smith is not splitting carries, while Lynch is (with Fred Jackson), (b) the Lions run defense is not as good as the Giants run defense (by about 16 yards/game and 8 touchdowns), plus they just got torched by the Chargers for over 260 yards and 4 touchdowns on the ground, so they're looking mightly vulnerable at this point. And (c), the Lions field is indoors, so weather won't be an issue, while the same can't be said for Giants Stadium.

Matt's take: I have nothing to add. This one's a no-brainer.

Jeremy asks: I need soem help with my wrs, I can have 3. I have wes welker, larry fitzgerald, plaxico, roydell williams, and kevin curtis. Im only 50 points behind and can win if my recievers do their part, and at QB I have payton and anderson not sure on which one i should start any advise you could give me would be great thanks

Brandon's take: At the wide receiver position, I think Welker (against his old team and under-utilized last week) and Fitzgerald (Pro-Bowler) are must starts. As for your other spot, those three other guys all have favorable matchups. I'm going to go out on a limb though and recommend Kevin Curtis over Burress (in cold Buffalo) and Williams (just hasn't proven to be a consistent fantasy source quite yet).

As for your quarterback, I have to recommend Manning at home against the Texans. There's no telling what the weather will be like in Cinci this weekend, so Anderson could be risky. I wouldn't expect the Colts to sit Manning too early (even if they do, he should already have good stats) in this one after what happened to the team a few years ago after trying to "rest" their starters at the end of the year.

Sean asks: Should I play Derek Anderson in the cold and wind in Cincy or Romo with the bruised hand against Carolina? Pick one for a swing slot (in the order I have them now):

Anthony Gonzales vs. Hou
Chris Chambers vs. Den
Chris Brown vs. NYJ
Warrick Dunn vs. Ari
Roydell Williams vs. NYJ

Brandon's take: Romo fully participated in practice on Wednesday and coach Phillips says his thumb has "really progressed", so I have to recommend starting Romo here. T.O. has begun complaining a bit, so they'll make sure to get him the ball a lot and that should mean big passing numbers for Romo. Don't let the last time the Bengals and Browns played fool you (in what could be considered the Fantasy Football Pro Bowl of games)...this time both defenses should actually show up (in some shape or form), and the weather does not look all that great (cold, windy and rainy). Go with Romo and I'll pray with you that his thumb doesn't act up.

As for your swing/flex spot, Anthony Gonzalez definitely looks like the strongest play here against the Texans. Manning is looking to continue building chemistry with him to get ready for the playoffs, so you should see plenty of balls going his way. Good luck!

Matt's take: Romo's fine and he should have a decent day in Carolina, but keep an eye on the weather in Cincinnati. Anderson could have a monster day if the weather's relatively OK. You'll be able to wait until 8pm to make the call, and I recommend that you check the forecast Saturday evening and then decide. If it's going to be above 40 and they're just calling for showers and less wind than they're currently predicting (34 mph gusts), I'd go with Anderson, since Cincy's defense is a gift from the fantasy gods every week.

Jobez asks: During the NFL offseason will you be covering Fantasy Fishing?
fantasy-sports-have-gone-too-far.html

Brandon's take: Hell no.

Matt's take: Were there words in that blog post? All I can recall is the photo. That fish was so hot.
