Here are the first few Ask the Geek questions for week six. Hopefully you guys continue to dominate your leagues, but if not, all the more reason to get questions in so we can help! Remember, you can ask the geeks here or simply leave them as comments on our posts and we’ll try our best to respond to them as soon as possible.
Matt asks…
Hey guys! I’m leading my league and I want to stay undefeated. I have both Mendenhall and Parker and I don’t know who is going to produce more in my lineup… little help? Also I have Ochocinco, Colston and Brandon Marshall…What two would you keep in your lineup consistently… please help!
Brandon’s take: Although Steelers coach Mike Tomlin has stated that he’s undecided on the division of labor between Willie Parker and Rashard Mendenhall, I don’t see a way that he keeps Mendenhall out of the line-up, as he’s been playing terrifically for the past two weeks. I’d definitely put Mendenhall in this week against the Browns though. As for your wide receivers, those are three great options you have there. While I think you’re going to want Marshall and Colston in there most of the time, you probably want to make your decision based on their match-ups. This week, with the Saints playing the Giants (the top team against the wide receiver position this year), go with Marshall and Ochocinco.
Matt’s take: As long as Mendenhall is healthy, I think he’s going to be the guy. This week’s going to be a monstrous opportunity for him. I’m with Brandon on your receivers – all three are top-notch, so play the matchups.
Asher asks…
Week six, do I start Eli Manning or Flacco?
Brandon’s take: Even with Manning playing a Saints team that has been surprisingly good against the pass this year, I can’t recommend benching him as he’s been on fire (even with a bum foot!) Keep Eli in there and hope his foot doesn’t get re-injured during the game. I guess if the foot injury scares you a lot though, Flacco makes a pretty safe play for 200-250 yards and a score or two.
Matt’s take: Neither. Check your waiver wire.
Anthony asks…
Someone has offered me Brent Celek for Mike Sims-Walker. Should I take it or no?
Brandon’s take: It all depends on your current wide receiver and tight end situation. Is Sims-Walker your 4th best wide receiver and you start Todd Heap at TE? If so, go for the trade. If Sims-Walker is one of your top guys and you have a serviceable option at the tight end position already, you might want to reject the proposal.
Matt’s take: No. Sims-Walker is the real deal and will prove it this week against the Rams. Actually, he proved it last week without stepping foot on the field. The Jags were unable to do a thing on offense without him. Seems crazy to make him miss a game for apparently missing a curfew.
Will asks…
Hey guys-Love your site and excellent advice. I am in a smallish (8) team league and we had to have an auto draft and mine was all messed up…so I’ve been a waiver wire nutcase to try to build my team back up…I am in 5th and would like to settle on a solid starting roster…
QB’s-Eli and Big Ben (Flacco third) fine here…
WR’s -Djax, Smith (NYG) Hines Ward, MS Walker, D. Bowe (could you pick 4 to settle on?) We start three each week…
RB’s…(I got a bunch!) Mendenhall, Grant, Bradshaw, Slaton, Portis, Barber. Same as WR’s-start three each week…who to keep or cut bait?
TE-V. Davis and H. Miller-Fine here…Thanks guys!!!
Brandon’s take: At wide receiver, I’d keep all of those guys if you can. However, my four favorite would be DeSean Jackson, Steve Smith (NYG), Hines Ward and Mike Sims-Walker. The Chiefs offense isn’t good enough for me to like Bowe as much as the other guys. This week though, I’d start Jackson, Smith and Sims-Walker. For running back, I would think you would be able to trade some of those guys instead of simply cutting them. As for the three to start this week, I’d go with Portis, Mendenhall and Grant. Hope this helps!
Matt’s take: Agreed on everything here. Was going to say that you should swap Grant out in favor of Slaton, but then I remembered Grant’s matchup.
Wolf asks…
I’ve got MJD up against the Rams in RB1, but who should I play in RB2…Ray Rice had a great game for me this week, but now he is up against the Vikings. I could put in Steve Slaton against Cin, or I could pick Ryan Grant back up against the Lions (but i’d most likely drop slaton for grant).
What do you guys think?
Brandon’s take: While I like Ryan Grant better this week than Steve Slaton, I can’t recommend dropping Slaton outright for him, as a lot of who to start between the two will be based on match-ups and I think Slaton has more upside. I’d keep Ray Rice in there anyways though, as I think he’ll have a solid game this weekend, even against the Vikings (who gave up 122 rushing yards to the Rams last week.) Plus, Rice is used a lot in the passing game, so if the running game is shut down, he should put up some numbers anyways.
Matt’s take: Why is Ryan Grant on your league’s waiver wire? Where can I find this planet that has fantasy football leagues where people seriously consider dropping Steve Slaton? Can I join you there? Are these money leagues?
Matt M asks…
Do you guys think Bradshaw (NYG) will have a good game against a legitimate opponent? I can pick up Cadillac Williams instead who will at least get a lot of touches.
Brandon’s take: Even though Cadillac should get carries, Tampa Bay’s passing game isn’t good enough at this point to make them a viable threat, so defenses can stack the box against their running game. This is not the case with the Giants and you can see how successful Bradshaw has been while splitting carries with Brandon Jacobs. Stick with Bradshaw.
Matt’s take: Yep, Bradshaw’s the better start. The Tampa Bay offense isn’t trustworthy in any way at this point.

Who should I start this week? Flacco against the Vikings or Ryan against the Bears?
Brandon 3:40 pm on 10/14/2009 Permalink |
After seeing what Matt Ryan did to San “best defense of week 4″ Francisco last week, I see no reason to bench him this week against a Bears defense that is more bark than bite these days.
ffgeekblogROCKS 4:22 pm on 10/14/2009 Permalink |
Need a bye week Flex, guys! LJ, Devery, DWard, Royal, or trade my Garcon for Burleson and Flex him? Thanks in advance!
Brandon 4:32 pm on 10/14/2009 Permalink |
I’d trade Garcon for Burleson if possible and use him as your Flex. Otherwise, Eddie Royal would probably work.
TeamWorseThanARectalDysfunction 4:35 pm on 10/14/2009 Permalink |
Should I drop Garcon and/or Derrick Ward to pick up Donnie Avery, Antonio Bryant, Jamal Charles, Hakeem Nicks, Chester Taylor, or Lance Moore? You guys are my main fantasy football advice source!
Brandon 9:22 am on 10/15/2009 Permalink |
It depends on how deep you are at RB for Ward. If you have 3 or 4 other solid RB’s, feel free to drop him for Bryant or Nicks. As for Garcon, I’d give him another week or so before making any moves, but it might turn out that Bryant and Nicks are also better plays at WR. Hope everything works out!
Javier 7:25 pm on 10/14/2009 Permalink |
I am concerned about McGahee not getting enough plays, like last week… my league is a 2RB 2WR 1RB/WR with only 4 bench spots:
QB Rodgers
RB MJD
RB McGahee
RB/WR Bowe
WR Steve Smith (NYG)
WR Randy Moss
TE Daniels
K Gostkowski
D/ST Jets
Bench: Addai, Brown (Byes), Buckhalter (inj), Orton (picked up to cover Rodgers last week)
Should I drop Orton right away for someone? Which of my starters should be replaced?
Brandon 9:18 am on 10/15/2009 Permalink |
I’d stick with what you have there unless there’s some pretty solid running backs on free agency/waivers. Orton has become a very startable quarterback and you may play him over Rodgers depending on the match-up.
Javier 10:17 am on 10/15/2009 Permalink
Some of the options from free agency are Maclin, Knox and LenDale White… also Sidney Rice and Miles Austin hmm…
sal 8:20 pm on 10/14/2009 Permalink |
hi guys – first time, long time – 2 RB, 2WR, and a flex: Tomlinson, Parker, Hightower, Jennings, Roddy White, & V. Jackson – who do you bench?
Brandon 9:15 am on 10/15/2009 Permalink |
Hey Sal, glad to hear from you! Anyways, of that group I’d start the following:
WR: Greg Jennings and Roddy White
RB: LaDainian Tomlinson and Willie Parker
Flex: Vincent Jackson
Bench: Tim Hightower
sal 11:06 pm on 10/15/2009 Permalink
thanks — for some reason I didn’t even consider benching hightower.. hoping my bye-week scrubs (kyle orton, jags def, jermichael finley) come through…
Steve 9:31 pm on 10/14/2009 Permalink |
Matt Hasselback Or Matt Ryan and Percy Havin Or TO at Flex?
Brandon 9:13 am on 10/15/2009 Permalink |
Hasselbeck has a decent match-up with the Cardinals this week, but I just don’t see him putting up the numbers he did last week twice in a row. Also, T.O. will have Jets cornerback Darrelle Revis on him all afternoon, so he’s not a strong play. I like Matt Ryan and Percy Harvin this week.
Brandon 9:45 am on 10/15/2009 Permalink |
The more I think about the Ryan vs Hasselbeck question, the more I’m leaning towards Hasselbeck. I don’t think you’ll be disappointed with either one, but I’m officially changing my opinion to recommending Matt Hasselbeck over Matt Ryan.
Mike 10:14 pm on 10/14/2009 Permalink |
Hey guys, thanks for everything you put into the site. It’s great! Need to pick 2 out of Rice, Grant, and Portis. I’m tempted to start Grant and Portis simply due to match-ups, but Rice has been so dependable this year, I’m having a hard time benching him. Any thoughts?
Brandon 9:10 am on 10/15/2009 Permalink |
I like Ray Rice’s potential for the rest of the year, but I have a hard time recommending you bench Grant and Portis, who play the 7th and 8th worst defenses against the run this year. Give Rice the week off and hope the other guys come through for you.
lou 10:51 pm on 10/14/2009 Permalink |
Hey guy, i have Chris Cooley and Jermichael FInley, who should be my guy this week considering what Cooley did last week and Finley’s matchup this week?
Brandon 9:08 am on 10/15/2009 Permalink |
Both guys have great match-ups and I heard rumors that Cooley was used more for blocking last week than usual. If you’re a gambling man, go with Finley and hope he has another huge game, but Cooley’s still the safer play if you’re satisfied with 6-10 points or something.
Wolf 11:14 pm on 10/14/2009 Permalink |
Do you think Sims-Walker vs Rams will outperform Steve Smith (NYG) vs NO this weekend?
Brandon 9:06 am on 10/15/2009 Permalink |
I believe he will, but not by a whole lot. Sims-Walker will be playing his heart out after missing last weeks game due to a curfew violation. You can’t start both of them?
LT 2:32 am on 10/15/2009 Permalink |
Great advice guys! I’m undefeated and I want to keep it like that. I got a close matchup, so it all comes down to choose from K. Winslow or H. Miller? Who do you think will put the numbers??? Who should I keep for the rest of the season?
Brandon 9:04 am on 10/15/2009 Permalink |
I like Kellen Winslow this week and think he has more upside over the course of the season. Miller doesn’t make a bad backup though if you have a roster spot to spare.
Shirley 6:28 am on 10/15/2009 Permalink |
Because of my horrible record thus far, I have been able to pick up great RBs Rashard Mendenhall and Cedric Benson, I also drafted Ryan Grant and Michael Turner. I’m strong at RB, solid at QB but relatively weak at WR. Roddy White is my only WR1 and all of the others are maybe WR3 at best. I’m looking to trade one of my RBs for a WR1 or a high WR2 (if necessary). Which of my 4 RBs should I try to shop around? I’m thinking Ryan Grant. He always gives decent numbers but after looking at his schedule, his seems to be overall tougher than the others? Please let me know what you think, thanks.
Brandon 9:00 am on 10/15/2009 Permalink |
You might want to shop Mendenhall, who’s value is pretty high at this point. With Willie Parker returning, they will undoubtedly split carries (not sure on the percentage at this point, but it’ll be some sort of time share.) I see Benson as another sell-high candidate, as I don’t see him getting any better than he is playing right now. The problem with Ryan Grant is that people will look at his numbers and not give him the value he deserves, meaning you won’t get that great of WR offers. Hope this helps!
Eric 8:00 am on 10/15/2009 Permalink |
Hey Fellas. Need your help. I’m in a 10 team money league. I’m set at QB, RB, and TE, but I’m not good at all when it comes to WR. Last week, I started Breaston, Sims Walker (Ouch), Bryant, and Mossaquoi (a bigger OUCH). In this league, it’s safe to say that I’m stuck with what I have. I’ve tried to shop Lynch, Gore, LT, Mgahee, and Ronnie – no one will buy because we start 4 WRs so they are clinging to what they have. Here’s my question. If I’m stuck with the following WR core – who are my best bets to hold on to, and who should I let go? I currently need to pickup a Kicker and DL for week 6 and have no slots to do so.
Antonio Bryant
Sims-Walker
Breaston
Mossquoi
Maclin
Nicks
Devery Henderson
Lance Moore
Earl Bennett
Thanks Fellas,
Eric
Brandon 8:56 am on 10/15/2009 Permalink |
If you need to drop a couple receivers, I’d start with your bottom two guys there…Bennett and Moore. I think Devery Henderson has overtaken Moore as the number two receiver in New Orleans this season and the Bears receivers haven’t been consistent enough this year to warrant starting in a fantasy league.
If you wanted my opinion on who to start this week, I’d go with Sims-Walker, Maclin, Nicks and Bryant, although Breaston could be decent if you wanted the 8-9 point safe route instead of the Maclin 2 or 20 point route.
Brian 8:03 am on 10/15/2009 Permalink |
RB dilema, who to start (pick 2):
Ray Rice (been getting better and better but goes against the Vikes this week)
Knowshon Moreno (keep waiting for him to explode – against the Chargers)
Ryan Grant (been a big let down so far – but against the Lions this week should help)
Kevin Smith (have a hard time starting this guy on a horrible team, against the Pack this week)
I think I am leaning towards two of the top 3 but I can’t make up my mind. I have a personal bias to Rice as I am a Rutgers guy but not sure if he has the best matchup this week.
Thanks for your help.
Brandon 8:52 am on 10/15/2009 Permalink |
Unfortunately I’d sit your Rutgers guy this week. Moreno plays the worst run defense in the NFL this week and Grant has a solid match-up with the Lions. I’m afraid this week that Willis McGahee might get a lot of carries for the Ravens (since the team has barely used him the past two weeks and the coach has said he’s still a part of the gameplan), which will cut into Rice’s workload…which was going to be hard enough anyways against the Vikings.
Reggie 10:23 am on 10/15/2009 Permalink |
Cutler or Garrard this week?
Josh from RI 1:35 pm on 10/15/2009 Permalink |
Hi Reggie,
I personally love Garrard, especially matching up against St. Louis. Forget about his performance last week. He’ll have Sims-Walker (barring another late night social engagement) and a completely forgettable Rams D.
Brandon 2:30 pm on 10/15/2009 Permalink |
I agree with Josh from RI…go with Garrard.
Mark 10:28 am on 10/15/2009 Permalink |
How will New Orleans D fare this week?
Josh from RI 1:31 pm on 10/15/2009 Permalink |
Hi Mark,
I had the same problem with the Saints D. In fact, I own both the Saints AND Giants D and have benched them in favor of Jacksonville being at home against St. Louis.
If you still can pick up Jacksonville off of waivers, you’ll probably be better off. The Saints have a very low projection being such a though matchup even with Eli hobbling around in practice.
Brandon 2:29 pm on 10/15/2009 Permalink |
I agree with Josh from RI if Jacksonville is available, but to answer your question, I think they’re going to let up three or four touchdowns to a pretty high powered Giants offense.
Mal 10:36 am on 10/15/2009 Permalink |
I ended up trading britt for Garcon purely for his wk7 matchup (as sims-walker, megatron and b marshall have bye for me that week). I will keep simswalker this week but after this week do you think if I have the oppurtunity to trade Sims-walker for santonio holmes I should do it??? Also if megatron is out this week who should I grab off the waiver. Some names available ATM are caldwell, royal, massaquoi, muhammad (CAR).
Also my starting backs are always Jacobs/Burner. What is with the bad omen around Jacobs, do I keep him starting? (Sproles + Bradshaw are on my bench) THANKS!
Brandon 2:26 pm on 10/15/2009 Permalink |
I wouldn’t trade Sims-Walker for Santonio Holmes, as I think Sims-Walker will be more consistent (when he’s not missing curfew!) than Holmes for the rest of the year. As for your receivers, I’d grab Massaquoi if you have a roster spot to spare, but he’ll be a gamble (was two weeks ago the norm? Or last week?) For your running back, I’m almost leaning towards recommending you start Bradshaw over Jacobs, as he seems to do more with his carries. Keep Jacobs in there this week and hope he can find the endzone.
Shane 12:30 pm on 10/15/2009 Permalink |
I have 5 Receivers and need to start 2
Donald Driver
Roddy White
Steve Smith (NYG)
Mario Manningham
Jeremy Maclin
Also, Brady or Hasselbeck?
Brandon 2:22 pm on 10/15/2009 Permalink |
Go with Roddy White and Steve Smith. At quarterback, I like Tom Brady a bit more than Hasselbeck, but they’re both great plays and both made my “Hits” list this week.
Josh from RI 12:58 pm on 10/15/2009 Permalink |
Hi guys! I have a WR quandary:
Pick 2 to start: (2 WR slots, 14 team league, no Flex)
Wes Welker
Mike Sims-Walker
Donald Driver
BTW: I have Garrard starting since Peyton is on a bye.
Thanks again!
Brandon 2:08 pm on 10/15/2009 Permalink |
I like Welker against a terrible Titans pass defense and Sims-Walker, who (along with the rest of the Jaguars) will be out to prove something after last week’s embarrassment.
Greg 2:57 pm on 10/15/2009 Permalink |
5 receivers, Playing 2
Driver
Maclin
Moore
Steve Smith (Car)
Burleson
Brandon 3:55 pm on 10/15/2009 Permalink |
Go with Steve Smith and Nate Burleson…although Driver has a great matchup as well.
Greg 11:59 pm on 10/16/2009 Permalink
Thanks for the help Brandon
Much appreciated
David 4:23 pm on 10/15/2009 Permalink |
Hey guys, love the site, thanks for all the work!
I have B. Jacobs, L. Washington, W. Parker and MJD. I’m starting MJD for sure, but am torn about B. Jacobs (rough start to the season, tough match-up against the Saints). Who should I start as my RB2?
Many thanks!
d
Brandon 4:37 pm on 10/15/2009 Permalink |
Considering your options, I’d stick with Brandon Jacobs. I’m not sure what kind of carries Parker will get with Mendenhall running so well these days and Washington still hasn’t proven to be a fantasy-worthy starter quite yet.
David 5:13 pm on 10/15/2009 Permalink
Thanks Brandon, I was leaning in that direction but I really needed a consultation. (Very close match-up this week…)
