This week in our Ask the Geeks post we take a look at the first pick in a keeper league:
Adam asks: Quick question for your wisdom-ness: In a keeper league, 8 teams. Turner, Peterson, MJD, Forte, and Jackson are out at RB. Fitz, Calvin Johnson, and Greg Jennings are out. I have Randy Moss and Felix Jones on a 1 year contract. Question is – do I take Andre Johnson, DeAngelo Williams, or Tom Brady with the first pick. Second draft pick needs a QB, so I am guessing Brady will be gone (as Brees, Manning, Warner, Rodgers are all gone). Thanks!
Brandon’s take: Adam, it all depends on your league’s scoring, but I think your best pick here is to go with DeAngelo Williams. You already have Randy Moss at receiver, so there’s no need to reach for another top receiver with your first pick. If your league rewards heavily for quarterback play, then you might consider Tom Brady, but since you have no running back at this point besides Felix Jones, it makes sense to take one of the top tailbacks in the league. You can wait a bit in the draft for a quarterback, going for someone like Philip Rivers (although he’ll probably be gone), Matt Schaub or Tony Romo, but if you wait for a running back, you will see most of the “sure bets” go fast and you’ll be left with some risky plays. Due to his injury struggles this preseason, backup Jonathan Stewart will likely see less carries to start the season, meaning better production from Williams right out of the gate.
Matt’s take: Andre Johnson and Tom Brady are both pretty tempting and have ceilings as high as any other player at their respective positions, but given that you don’t have a reliable RB1 or RB2 on your roster yet, I think you’ve got to take him. There are just so few stud running backs in the league this year; any team lucky enough to grab one of them will be at a significant advantage week after week.

I am in a dynasty league that is H2H with typical scoring. It is not a PPR league. 6 pts for all TD’s (pass, run or catch), 1 pt for 25 yds passing, 1 pt for 10 yds rushing and receiving. We keep 10 Dynasty players. My keepers are Matt Schaub, Carson Palmer, Leon Washington, Justin Forsett, Knoshown Moreno, Darren McFadden, Hines Ward, Percy Harvin, Andre Caldwell and Derrick Mason. I have the # 1 and # 9 pick in this years draft. I am taking Ryan Matthews with my 1st pick. and looking at either Golden Tate or Arrelious Benn at # 9.
I was just offered a trade in a 3 team proposal. I would trade Schaub, my # 9 pick this year and my first round pick next year to Chris in return he will give me his # 4 pick in this years draft and then Chris will send Jamaal Charles to Ryan who will then send Michael Bush to Chris and his (Ryan’s) first round pick next year to me.
After doing some research and investigating, I am sure that I can get Dez Bryant with the # 4 pick this year so I would get the # 1 rated RB and # 1 rated WR from this years draft to build from.
My question is, is this a good trade for me or should I stand pat with the 1st and 9th pick of this years draft and go with Matthews and Golden Tate or Benn?
I am really torn with this trade offer. I would like it better if I could keep my # 9 pick this year and not get the 1st round pick next year from Chris (through Ryan) but this is the hanging point on the whole trade. Chris will not trade at all unless the # 9 pick is involved.
Please let me know what you think ASAP and thank you in advance for your advice.
