Remember to follow us on Twitter (FFGeekBlog) if you’re not already. Also, if you’re just looking for some good, general NFL updates, I recommend following ESPN’s new golden-boy, Adam Schefter (Adam_Schefter). He’s one of the most Twitter-addicted people I’ve ever seen…which is good for you (possibly bad for his family) if you’re looking for football news.

Matt
Just thought this was interesting to note – so far this season, Randy Moss leads the NFL in receptions and is on pace to break his personal record for catches. That strikes me as a particularly good sign for both his and Tom Brady’s value once Wes Welker is finally healthy – the team’s biggest playmaker is still firing on all cylinders, so once this offense is back in one piece, fantasy owners who resisted the urge to trade Brady will probably be glad they did.

As usual, we will be putting up an Ask the Geeks post in the next day or so, so make sure to get your questions in here. You can also just leave questions as comments on our posts and we’ll try our best to respond to all of them as soon as possible.

Just a reminder, BYE weeks are starting this week, so keep an eye out for any waiver wire pick-ups you plan to make who play for these teams: Arizona, Atlanta, Carolina, Philadelphia, as they won’t be available for your team this weekend.

The Wire - Week 4: Time to wake up and smell the Coffee
Brandon
Here’s our waiver wire recommendations heading into week four, leading off with a guy who should have been a mandatory handcuff heading into the season, but apparently was not. As usual, The Wire is organized into four categories: Get ‘em in there, Pick up and hold, Stopgaps, and Pretenders. “Get ‘em in there” are the players worth of a start right away, while “Stopgaps” are the players who will get you through a short-term injury or bye week. “Pick up and hold” is just what is sounds like and “Pretenders” are those players who might have had one good week and immediately picked up in every Yahoo Public league out there…don’t waste a roster spot and waiver claim on them. In addition, you’ll find the Yahoo! ownership rank (in parenthesis) for each player so you know which guys have a better chance of being available in your league.
UPDATE! I’ve added Tashard Choice and Dante Rosario to this list after last night’s game, just to let you know.
Get ‘em in there
- Glen Coffee, RB, 49ers (48%) – It looks like Frank Gore will be out a week or two, so all of you who handcuffed Coffee to him in the draft are happy right now…the others, not so much. Glen didn’t play all that well, but he was going against a tough Vikings defense. He should put up decent numbers in Gore’s absense, as the team plays the Rams and Falcons in their next two games.
- Denver DEF (64%) – Who ever thought they’d be the top ranked defense after three weeks?! Seems that they’re the real deal.
- Correll Buckhalter, RB, Broncos (67%) – He had 108 yards on Sunday and while he splits carries with Knowshon Moreno, he makes for a decent injury fill-in RB2 or flex play from week-to-week.
- Mike Sims-Walker, WR, Jaguars (69%) – Sims-Walker is trying his hardest to wrestle the WR1 role away from Torry Holt and now has 12 receptions over his past two games. He makes a decent WR3 or flex play at this point.
- Brent Celek, TE, Eagles (79%) – This guy is one of the best tight ends in the league so far this season and is still only owned in 79% of the leagues out there. I assume he’ll be taken in at least 95% after Sunday’s 104 yard and a touchdown performance.

RotoInfo is stealing our content
Matt
UPDATE – Commenter nero noticed some malware coming from their site, so proceed with caution if you click on the link below.
Here’s my post from earlier today. And here’s RotoInfo’s post. Strikingly similar, eh?
This isn’t the first time I’ve seen another blog republish what we write without permission, but it’s the first time I’ve ever seen it happen on what appears to be a relatively large, established website. Generally speaking, “blog scrapers” don’t bother to set up a big complex website; they just quickly throw together a default-template Wordpress blog because they figure they’ll get caught sooner or later and then just move on to another web host and/or URL. RotoInfo seems to be in the content-stealing game for keeps, which is why I’m taking the time to call them out.
I just did a quick Google search and verified that they are indeed stealing all of our content, word for word, and it’s all coming up in Google right under our own listings.

Some more quick thoughts of my own…
- Is Brandon Marshall back?! He’s apparently happy about the teams 3-0 start and seems to be getting better each week. For all of those who took the risk on him on draft day, you have to be feeling a little better these days.
- ProFootballTalk is trying to start some crazy “Brett Favre wants Randy Moss to come to Minnesota to finish his career with him, so Moss is starting to take plays off for the Patriots so they’ll get sick of him” rumor…pretty far fetched to me.
- So much for the thoughts of Byron Leftwich being a suitable backup quarterback for your fantasy team. He’s not even the backup for his own team now.
-
Matt
A few quick thoughts on yesterday’s games from a fantasy perspective…
- Maybe the real QB controversy in Philly is Kolb-McNabb… but yeah, not really. Reid’s going to start McNabb as soon as he’s healthy, and the good news for his fantasy owners is the emergence of DeSean Jackson as a truly elite receiver. McNabb hasn’t had a target of this caliber since T.O. left town.
- I’m not usually one to say “I told you so,” but I’m feeling pretty good about my MJD pick.
- Joe Flacco looked good again, but I’ll wait to declare him an every-week fantasy starter until I see how he does in New England this Sunday.
- Matt Schaub and Co. are rounding into shape pretty nicely, wouldn’t you say? Slaton didn’t exactly have a breakout game fantasy-wise, but his owners should be relieved to see him look effective when he touched the ball (and to see his vulture Chris Brown fumble in the red zone). If you own him, hold onto him; if you don’t, see if his owner might be willing to trade him.

Matt
Can’t say I expected the Saints-Bills game to turn into a defensive battle with zero passing touchdowns on either side. Neither did Vegas – the over/under was 52.5. Drew Brees hasn’t looked like himself at all.
Maybe it’s the weather. It’s nasty up here in Western NY right now.

Matt
This season’s version of the Yahoo StatTracker is terrible. It takes forever to load, the chat feature is more or less useless because it covers up your stats if you have it open, and it’s randomly stopped pulling in new info so many times that I can’t trust it any more, making it essentially useless to me. Hey Yahoo guys – bring back the old yellow StatTracker. Please. It wasn’t as pretty, but it worked.

Ask the Geeks: Week 3 overflow!
Brandon
I would have gotten this Ask the Geeks post up yesterday, but I was attending a wedding, so be happy I woke up at 7:30 AM to get them up with plenty of time before the games today! Anyways, I’m assuming everyone is 2-0 so far, so this week we’ll help you keep that unbeaten streak alive (okay, maybe you’re not 2-0, but we’ll still help!) Remember to send any inquiries you may have to us here.
David asks…
I am having trouble deciding who to start between Chris Johnson and Steve Slaton. Who should I start?

Top Five at Five: Week 3
Matt
Kill me. Now. I was almost done with this post, and then an errant click on the back button wiped it out because I hadn’t thought to save it as a draft yet. Sigh.
The following are my top five picks for the week at the five positions I give a crap about – i.e., everything but the kicker.
Quarterback
- Drew Brees (@BUF) – He’s in a league of his own, and will occupy this position in the weekly rankings regardless of the matchup until I’m given a good reason to change my mind, which doesn’t seem likely to happen.
- Tony Romo (vs. CAR) – He’s the A-Rod of the NFL: He saves his biggest performances for the weakest opponents. (Oh, and he plays for the flashiest team in a shiny new stadium, has dalliances with pop singers, and is alternately exalted and skewered by both the local and national media.)
- Peyton Manning (@ARI) – Arizona’s been good against the pass so far, but their opponents (JAX and SF) don’t have aerial attacks anywhere close to the same class as Indy’s. This will almost surely be a shootout. Speaking of which…
- Kurt Warner (vs. IND) – If it’s a shootout you’re selling, Warner’s buying. If he wasn’t slightly bothered by a shoulder injury, I’d like him a little bit more than Manning this week.
- Tom Brady (vs. ATL) – Rust, the Jets, and Welker’s absence are all valid excuses. But one more off week and he won’t make this list again until he looks like the Brady we used to know. I’m guessing here that the recent Moss injury reports are just a Belichick game of some sort since he was fine all week.
-
Hits & Misses - Week 3: Bring out your Steve Smiths!
Brandon
Here are our “Hits” and “Misses” for week three, listing players who you want to make sure are in your lineup, as well as those who you might consider shelving for the week (or at least lowering your expectations!) As usual, I tried to keep the most obvious players off the list, such as Drew Brees against a Bills defense that is allowing over 330 yards per game through the air (make sure to have him in your lineup this week though.) Anyways, let’s get to the good stuff, starting with a pair of receivers who share a name… (More …)
-
Brandon
Maybe Michael Vick can return to being a starter in the NFL, but did he really think that he’d just waltz out of prison and into the starting quarterback job for some team without proving himself first? I actually think things are working out much better for him than expected. I guess he could have gone to play for the Raiders and started (if they wanted him)…but I still don’t see that as a “better” situation than the one he’s currently in.
-
Brandon
Too bad he’s getting fine, because Sheldon Brown wearing a Jason mask before last week’s game is pretty awesome!
-
Brandon
If anyone is really struggling to find a decent running back this week, you might keep an eye on Saints running back Lynell Hamilton, who could see a bulk of the carries of Mike Bell can’t play and Pierre Thomas is still limited. Any running back that gets a good share of the carries in New Orleans should do well, as opposing defenses focus all their energy stopping the aerial attack of Drew Brees and company.

Ask the Geeks: Week 3
Brandon
If I thought the mailbox was overflowing before, this week I’d have to say it exploded. I guess sometimes advertising works! Anyways, let’s get to the questions we’ve received so far this week and hopefully get your teams prepared for a big week three. As I did in one of last week’s posts, I broke up the questions into two categories: “Lineup Suggestions” and “Roster Moves.” Remember to send any inquiries you may have to us here.
Lineup Suggestions
Anthony asks…
Is Santana Moss ever going to put up some decent fantasy points? I was thinking he would in week 2 against St. Louis, but he didn’t. This week it’s Detroit, and I don’t know if he will do well. Should I start him for week 3 or another player: Devin Hester, Davone Bess, Mike Sims-Walker, Chansi Stuckey, or Laurent Robinson.

Just wanted to let our readers know that we’ll be putting up an Ask the Geeks post soon, so get in any questions you have about the upcoming games this week!
