  • Studs and Duds: Week 14

    Brandon 11:26 am on 12/05/2007 | 0 Permalink Reply

Going into week 14 of the NFL season, I’m assuming that this is the first round of the playoffs for most managers out there. Hopefully some of my suggestions last week were able to give you that final push to secure a playoff spot (and hopefully they didn’t cause you to miss the playoffs!) If you listened to my recommendations and started Justin Fargas or Derrick Ward, you were most likely pleased with your decision. Also performing well was the Colts passing game, especially the Manning to Wayne connection. Then, as expected, Kevin Jones played poorly…although I can’t take credit for just how terrible he’d actually be. Three carries for one (1) yard?!!! At least he got 16 receiving yards I guess.

Anyways, there were a few players who apparently didn’t read my post last week, like Larry Fitzgerald (didn’t even play!), Anquan Boldin (played, but poorly), as well as David Garrard, Laurence Maroney and Willis McGahee, all who had a chip on their shoulder and played much better than I gave them credit for. In my defense though, Maroney got most of his yards through the air…something I actually hope to see more of as a Patriots fan. He’s a beast once he starts moving vertically, so what better way to get him going that way then to send him out on a receiving pattern instead of letting him dance around behind the line of scrimmage.

    Studs

Fred Jackson / Marshawn Lynch (BUF): At this point, Lynch is considered day-to-day, so keep an eye on this situtation before making any decisions. However, once it has been decided who will start for the Bills, make sure to plug them into your lineup if you can. The Bills are playing a Dolphins team that is allowing nearly 150 rushing yards a game, plus over a score a game on the ground.

Kolby Smith (KC): Although Smith didn’t repeat his week 12 performance last week against the Chargers, he has a chance to return to those big stats this week against the Broncos, who are allowing the second most rushing yardage per game in the NFL.

  • Quick player notes: Travis Henry avoids suspension

    Brandon 9:43 am on 12/05/2007 | 2 Permalink Reply

In case you missed these, I just wanted to give you some updates on the following players…

Travis Henry (RB-DEN): Henry has won his appeal and no longer faces a one year suspension from the league. Apparently his passing of a lie detector test and a hair sample test were enough to convince the league that they screwed up on their own drug test (which seems a little odd, but I guess could happen). This is good news for fantasy managers with Henry on their rosters, as he should produce fairly well as a RB2 or flex player through out the fantasy playoffs with Denver still in the hunt for a playoff spot.

Roy Williams (WR-DET): Williams is expected to miss the rest of the season with a sprained knee. Owners looking to replace him in their lineup should look no further than the rest of the Detroit receiving corps, as Calvin Johnson and Mike Furrey move into the WR1 and WR2 spots on the team respectively, while Shaun McDonald will move in as the slot receiver. With Kitna completing around 23 passes a game, expect all three of those receivers to see plenty of balls going their way in the next few weeks, as the Lions fight for their lives to earn a playoff spot.

  • The Wire: Week 14

Wow, I’m glad I’m a Patriots fan and not a Ravens fan after last nights game. Imagine the feeling those players had when they thought they had the game won…then realized that one of their coaches had called a time out? Ouch! Alright, that’s enough rubbing it in. I was definitely on an emotional roller coaster watching that one though…let’s hope the rest of their undefeated season is a lot less exciting (as they return to blowing out teams!) Anyways, the playoffs start this week in most leagues, so hopefully you have earned a spot in your league’s tournament. In case you’re in search of some last minute players to snag off the waiver wire that could help your team advance, here you go…

Bryant Johnson (WR-ARI): At this point, both Fitzgerald and Boldin are banged up, which could set the stage for a big day for Johnson this weekend. Even if Fitz or Boldin play, as long as both of them don’t play, Johnson should put up some good numbers, similar to his 56 yard and one touchdown performance this past weekend.

Mike Furrey and Shaun McDonald (WR-DET): With Roy Williams expected to miss the rest of the season with a knee sprain, Furrey will join the starting lineup with Calvin Johnson, but both Furrey and McDonald should see an increase in workload.

  • Sunday Wrap-up: JaMarcus Russell sighting!

    Brandon 11:25 am on 12/03/2007 | 0 Permalink Reply

That’s right folks, yesterday we finally got a glimpse of the top overall pick in this years NFL draft…and a glimpse was all it really was. For some strange reason, coach Lane Kiffin decided the right time to give Russell some experience was early in the second quarter of the game. Russell led the team on two scoreless drives (going 4-for-7 for 56 yards) before being replaced by the games starter, Josh McCown. I guess maybe Kiffin wasn’t ready to start him, but he also didn’t want to bring him in with the game on the line in the second half…but it still seemed a little odd to me. Who knows how the Oakland quarterback situation will play out over the rest of the season though, with McCown, Culpepper and Russell in the mix, but I guess we’ll just wait and see what kind of tricks Kiffin has up his sleeves. Anyways, with the Patriots about to beat the Ravens and move to 12-0 tonight, here is a recap of the action that took place yesterday (including Thursday’s game as well)…

Tony Romo (QB-DAL): 309 passing yards, 4 TD, 1 INT
If Romo keeps playing this well, I don’t see any NFC team challenging the ‘Boys en route to the Superbowl

Peyton Manning (QB-IND): 288 passing yards, 4 TD, 1 INT
Seems like we haven’t seen many of these games this year huh?

  • Congratulations to Thomas Jones

It took 13 weeks and a matchup against a team that’s odds-on to go 0-16 this year, but Tommy finally scored his first touchdown of the season! Had he been able to spend an entire season as an NFL team’s starting tailback without scoring once, I’m fairly certain it would have been an accomplishment on par with the Dolphins’ 2007 destiny.

Good on ya, Thomas. Just think – score one more, and you’ll be tied with your brother Julius! If you’re able to accomplish that, make sure to drink enough while celebrating to forget that he splits time with Marion Barber, and isn’t the favored option at the goal line.

  • Ask the Geeks: Week 13 (Part 2)

A couple more questions from the past day or so…

Micael Jenkins asks: I’m in a must win week and here’s my roaster. I think it’s decent but i’m iffy about sitting andre johnson in favor of deion branch in light of what philly did to moss last week. what do you guys think?

    QB Tom Brady
    QB Drew Brees
    WR Larry Fitzgerald
    WR Wes Welker
    WR Deion Branch
    RB Derrick Ward
    RB Travis Henry
    TE Antonio Gates
    W/R Maurice Jones-Drew

    BN Andre Johnson
    BN Kevin Jones
    BN Torry Holt
    BN Chris Henry
    BN Benjamin Watson

Brandon’s take: Mr. Jenkins, are you (or are you related to) the Michael Jenkins that plays for the Falcons? We’re always looking for celebrities (or semi-celebrities) to hit our site. Anyways, I’m going to stray a bit from your question and first make the comment that you have the most STACKED team in terms of receivers I have ever seen. You really can’t go wrong here. However, if I were you, this is what I would do…

Bench Travis Henry, as he could be splitting time with Selvin Young or Andre Hall. Put MJD in Henry’s spot. Now you can start 4 of those receivers (one in the WR/RB spot). Go with Fitzgerald, Welker (especially if you’re in a PPR league), Johnson and Holt (even if Frerrote is behind center). Benching Branch is tough, but considering the matchups, I think you have to go that route.

If you just wanted a simple answer to your question though, I would play Andre Johnson over Deion Branch. Hope this helped!
