Backup quarterback "packages"?

Maybe I'm just having a memory lapse in my old age, but since when have these alternate quarterback "packages" we've seen this week become popular? Yesterday we saw Kurt Warner come in for a few series because it became apparent that the team needed to score fast. Apparently they have a quarterback that is good at scoring fast and one that takes it easy. Then, tonight I see Kerry Collins coming in for a "package" where the Titans have very little time to score. How are these old men the guys that can help the team score faster? Isn't that the idea of the game...score as fast as you can? I mean once you have a good lead you can take it easy and run, but you're still trying to score always. What's next? Matt Cassel comes in for a quick strike package because Brady is too slow? Peyton Manning takes a spot on the bench with 50 seconds left in the fourth quarter and the team down by 5 while Jim Sorgi cruises down the field for the lightning speed score? Maybe the Bears should feature the Brian Griese package 95% of the time and put in Rex Grossman when they need to throw an interception or fumble.

2007-08 NFL Bye Weeks

Well this weekends games are nearly over (and it looks like New Orleans is going to be 0-3 at this rate), so it's time to begin thinking about BYE weeks. You might have forgot about these during the draft, but now it's time to see how badly you've screwed yourself when you realize that you have both starting runningbacks out on the same week. Here are the weeks and the teams that have bye's. Hopefully your team survives till week 11 and is still in contention!

Good gravy, the Saints suck

Tonight's game has been my first opportunity to witness the 2007 edition of the New Orleans Saints, and it's quite a sight to behold. Drew Brees has led his team to a grand total of one first down so far. The defense might as well not even be on the field (OK, so as I'm typing this they just picked off Vince Young). I'm hearing some long "O" sounds from the crowd, and they're not saying "Deuce" this time. Just think about how bad the Saints have to be playing for New Orleans fans to boo them.

The injury bug strikes

While there were some great fantasy performances from players this past weekend, there were also quite a few injuries to key players that you should be aware of so you can start planning for next weekend. You can also see a summarized version of these on our Injury Report list:

Lee Evans: Nothing more than a spot start from here on out

I can't think of the last time a guy who was drafted as a #1 WR in most leagues has seen his fantasy value fall so far so fast (without injury). Against Denver, the Bills showed that when they can, they prefer to run the ball, which makes sense given Marshawn Lynch's power and speed. Against the Steelers and Pats, they showed that really good defenses can simply overwhelm them.

Fantasy OVERLOAD!

I arrived back in Puerto Rico tonight, after being in Connecticut for the weekend, and man was I in for a surprise when I logged into my fantasy leagues. I recommend that if you're in 4 fantasy leagues, you don't log in halfway through the 4:00 games without having a clue what took place earlier. Just a few of the names that are blowing my mind right now:

Struggling with a decision this morning, might go with Plan C and slit wrists

This literally kept me up last night. I may need therapy. My squad in the "League of Champions" has an important matchup today: my co-Geek Brandon. I've got four WRs on that team (a bit shallow, I know, and something that'll probably bite me down the road): Reggie Wayne, Chris Chambers, Jerricho Cotchery, and Jerry Porter. Wayne's the obvious start.

Ask the Geeks: Week 3 (Part 2)

Chris asks - I think the answer is Barber III but I'll ask anyways... Barber's up against the tough Chicago Def that limited L.T., so should I start Betts instead against NYG, even with his small number of carries? As a side note, J.P. is staring the end of his days here. I see Edwards starting in game 5.

Matt's take - I don't like Barber or Betts this week. Any RB isn't looking at a great day against the Bears, and that goes double for a RB in a committee. But to say that Betts is in a committee would be an understatement - he's really more of a backup who'll be lucky to get 10 carries this week. Portis will probably have a very nice game, but I don't expect Betts to get much of the action (unless it's a blowout).

To all you question-askers...

We got 'em. We're working on 'em. Hold tight, there were a lot of you in the last couple of days and there are only two of us, which is actually totally plenty of us, but we also drink beer.
