Draft Analysis: The B-League

The PKT B-League represents some players with a wide range of experience; there are six or seven regulars who have been in the mix for four or more years, while the rest of the managers are pretty green. In other words, it's like a lot of leagues we've all been in. I think it's more worthwhile to analyze a draft like this than one of those "expert" drafts you see broken down all over the place. Just like watching the WSOP is a bad way to learn how to dominate your Thursday night poker game, studying an expert draft is going to give you an inflated level or respect for the other drafters in your league. In the real world, your friends will make mistakes, and you've got to be flexible enough in your draft strategy to take advantage of those mistakes.

Steelers passing game is just weird

I don't know what to make of it. Big Ben looked for all of last season like something was just wrong after the motorcycle accident; he suddenly decided he was Peyton Manning, started airing it out every other play, and wound up with 5 more INTs than TDs when all was said and done (also, nobody seems willing to admit that his surgically-repaired face makes babies cry. The baby's just hungry, their mothers say, while staring intently at the floor). Hines Ward is 31, had a barely passable 2006 fantasy season by his standards (1,005 yards, 6 TD), and probably has half the team pissed at him ever since he started busting on the team's rookies and bitching about the defense to the press for hitting too hard in training camp. Meanwhile, #3 WR (for now) Nate Washington is dropping passes left and right.

Third-year WRs that matter

Throughout my fantasy football career, I've always heard about this "magical third year" for WRs, when supposedly everything clicks for them and they become fantasy factors. Since this theory has held water pretty often in recent years (Steve Smith, Javon Walker, Lee Evans, Roy Williams, plenty more that I don't feel like linking to), here's a short list of the third year receivers going into the 2007 season that could take the next step this year:

Frank Gore < Shaun Alexander

I will pick Alexander over Gore if given the chance in a draft this year, and it seems like I'm one of the few who would (I'm somehow with Funston on this one). I think this is indicative of a mental flaw most fantasy players (and experts) have: Short memories. Yes, Gore's 2006 season was nothing short of friggin' stellar, while Alexander sat a big chunk of it out with a broken foot. But let's put last year aside and look at these two players' last five years.

2007 Fantasy Football Sleepers

Last updated: 8/21/07

Although it pains me to write this article, knowing that all of my opponents in my four fantasy football leagues could potentially read it, I felt it necessary to enlighten people as to my predicted sleepers of the season. However, I figure my superiority at watching the waiver wire will be enough to carry me past most of those amateurs, so here we go...

A committee rises in the Meadowlands?

Well, maybe not just yet, but Leon Washington sure is getting some friendly press lately, and it's making me reconsider Thomas Jones's spot on my cheat sheet. Sez Newsday:

Don't draft JaMarcus Russell

No shit, right? He plays (correction: MIGHT play) for the Oakland tap-dancing Raiders and his #1 option will be Jerry Porter, for chrissakes. Well, tell that to this guy and this guy and these guys, all of whom recommend you take a shot on him late in the draft even in non-keeper leagues. Let's ponder this for a moment.
